I was watching a commercial and Jennifer Anniston was doing a commercial for Emmerites Airlines. She never or I hardly ever see her do commercials. It was just one of those weird things that just didnt sit right. Isnt that airline owned by Saudi Arabia? It didnt sit right, weird.
My take away is that people are 90% the same but the rest of the 10% really start defining who we are, in a lot of ways. This is why all the contestants were equally picking off the answers throughout the game show and why, when it came to Final Black Jeopardy, Doug was clearly going to lose and the host and other contestants clearly took issue with it. Black people feel marginalized and the single white guy couldn't see it from this perspective. But, I definitely agree with you that this was hilarious and ballsy.
David Lor Let me ask you something. Since the installment (or election) of the countless black aldermen/women in the black neighborhoods, how much better have those neighborhoods fared economically, safety, and crime wise? Was there the improvement that was supposed to have been seen? I havent seen it. It just looks to me that the only blacks that had an improvement were those elected and their own inner circles. The rest stayed the same.
David Lor your comment just goes back to Berk's original point that people are actually separated by class and not by race.... If a black person feels marginalized it is largely because of some notion instilled into them from this idea of being part of a "black community" that is separate from the mainstream American culture at large. The political class both fosters and utilizes this exactly so that it can create the conditions where we believe ourselves, as a society, to be separated by race. So in a way we really are separated by race, at least apparently, but this separation is artificial and contrived having been created so that we don't become wise to the fact that it is only class that is separating us, naturally, in truth, in our so-called "classless society". This is why working class people of all races intuitively understand that the game is rigged and they are being conspired against. The real conspiracy is, of course, nothing like they imagine, but what they imagine has been fueled by the unconscious awareness of what is really happening to them.
Kenan Thompson's character blended perfectly with Tom Hanks' character. It was as if they met in the parking lot of a Lowes or Home Depot. 100% authentic, sincere and realistic, as each and every one of us have encountered a Doug.
I actually have an Uncle Doug that is exactly like this character, only he's from Jersey. Still flies a Confederate flag, though. He's a fan of losers.
Tom Hanks is the male Meryl Streep. Doesn't matter what the part is, he nails it every time! He just needs to do a lip sync battle to cement his legacy now.
I keep coming back to this, it's a top 10 SNL sketch. Tom Hanks gives it the gravitas, but Kenan is the star. Also "he got teeth don't he" is gold from Leslie Jones
Thank you, James! I'd like to bring you over a banana puddin' for that answer :-) If you listen to the news, you'd think the South is in a full on race war.
My favorite underrated part of this skit is that there are no real answers. As long as Darnell agrees, you win. Edit because the replies are driving me mad: In actual Jeopardy, you need to get the answer exactly correct, word-for-word. But in this skit, Darnell accepts any answer he personally agrees with, even if it is not the "correct", exact answer. Sorry I didn't explain myself well enough in the original comment, but these replies are driving me up the wall.
Brilliant sketch. Funny, caustic, insightful, and hard-hitting, all at once. Watching Doug clear the board every time was priceless. But the writers were wise to cut away at Final Jeopardy. Like Darnell says, "It was good while it lasted."
Besides the fact that this is very intelligently written, Keenan finding the timing and tone to be both the straight guy *and* the ridiculous one is amazing. He makes it look effortless when he perhaps only had a rehearsal or two. The precise look on his face and the way he agrees in surprise absolutely sells it, and he performs it live. I'm actually one of the few that isn't big on Keenan but I'm starting to realize it's because when he does everything he makes it look absolutely natural.
Absolutely! I was just thinking I think of this as a Tom Hanks skit but his character, while a caricature, is almost a straight man. It’s Keenan that completely sells it with timing and reactions.
I guess my "Cecil" is Bill, but he's an old farmer that fixes stray cats on the regular. Catches the males, sticks em in a boot head first, laces it up, whips out a pocket knife, and gives them the snip in about 30 seconds. Untie the boot, and off they run like a bullet.
@@Vinjoxx These days for sure, but that was just how life was out in the country. Farmers "fixed" their own livestock, and farm cats/dogs were no different.
Whoever wrote this sketch is a genius. They really highlighted some of the socioeconomic similarities between black and white folks in this country. For better and for worse.
Tom Hanks is great obviously, but can we acknowledge once again how Kenan Thompson is just the most consummate SNL workhorse? he can sell any line, make any skit work, makes every character better. he's just automatic. like Tracy Morgan. like Chris Farley.
Keenan is a comedic genius. His reactions to Doug were amazing, and I was dying when he said that he's "transported" when Tyler Perry puts on a muumuu. He might be the single best current SNL cast member, though Cecily Strong is also great.
Wikipedia: "As a child he was a fan of The Price Is Right which he referred to as "my first love" and "very joyful viewing", which had an effect on his future acting style."
I love how the host and Doug get friendlier and friendlier with one another as the skit goes on. Hanks and Kenan had such great chemistry in this skit. Honestly, Hanks is such an underappreciated comedic actor, I wish he would do more.
True. Alot of people forget pretty much for the first part of his career, until Philadelphia, he was pretty much known as a comedic actor, and a good one. IMO, he's just an excellent actor.
@cdrovdal08 because of the many layers of brilliance here. Not just an in your face comedy skit but one that makes you think. And obviously ahead of it's time. Oh my god he is freaking amazing. Been watching him since he was on All That when I was a kid! I do have to say I miss the days of Kenan and Kel together.
Any 90s kid who watched Nickelodeon back in the day can tell you this! I still remember when I'd watch Kenan and Kel, and All That, and I'd think to myself who would one day be an official SNL cast member. I was so happy when I found out Kenan was joining SNL, I felt like a proud parent!!
Patron not to mention he can do a great accent as well. Have you seen him in "The Terminal" I think that's the name of the movie where he has to live in an airport for a long time. I believe it was based on a true story if I'm not mistaken.
"What is 'Not a damn thing'" The timing between "Go Doug!"/"Doug, it has been a pleasure" and the final category is very underrated. This whole skit is gold.

This sketch perfectly illustrates that people are more separated by class than by race. Hilarious and ballsy.
HAH!! Exactly...United Arab Emirates: I know who they are in this soap opera but I had a blank spot the other day.
I see the same change in other communities as well. What do you suppose is the culprit to this lack of change? And how can we address it?
I love the astonishment in Darnell's face and voice when Doug gets his first couple of correct answers.

Easily overlooked on that new shit show
It’s prevalent in every version of this skit (they’ve done it multiple times) and it’s definitely my favorite part
No. Real answers. Some really are.
C'mon, they already decided who wins before it even happens!
What do you mean they are 100 percent real
He's very underrated when it comes to SNL comedians
Kenan has very strong improv chops. He stays in the moment and keeps it real.
