    YES! Tesseract is easily one of my favorite bands. "Musically thoughtful" is the perfect way to describe them.
    One of my favorite songs (how do you even pick one, really...) is Concealing Fate Part 2- Deception. Cool time signatures and really showcases Daniel's voice range/techniques. Have a listen!
    Also, PLEASE check out his guest vocal work for Earthside - "A Dream in Static". It is so so good and I think you would really appreciate it.

      It's one thing to break things down in terms of musical theory. It is a whole different ball game though when you manage to do so explaining musical theory without falling into the pitfall of terminology spaghetti so that even lay people can follow it. That is to me the the sign of an outstanding teacher.

    OH MAN! This is the quintessential melodic, proggy, djenty band! Keep listening, you're in for a treat!
    That groovy, funky, syncopated, single chord, chuggy sound on the guitars and drums is the core aspect of what is called djent. These guys take it to the next level by adding atmosphere, ambience, melody and emotion.
    Daniel Tompkins, the singer, is incredible. All of their music is along these lines: somewhat unusual time signatures, signature and key changes, syncopations, grooves, ghost notes on the drums, bass and guitars, atmosphere etc.

    Great reactions and comments! TesseracT is probably my favorite band at the moment. I always like to tell people that the guitar/bass riff you heard in the first verse is the same exact riff being played later in the piece, where the only difference is the drum feel. Super intricate writing!

  • @ReXtion88
    @ReXtion88 4 года назад +1

    As others have mentioned, TesseracT are one of the most distinctive prog metal bands out there. Their approach to rhythm fascinates and bamboozles me equally - with most Djenty polyrhythmic stuff I can find a beat to ride (generally through the cymbals, as it happens), but they are absolutely Expert Mode with that stuff. But, because they are all consummate musicians, they find ways to write songs that are compelling and enjoyable despite seeming to break a lot of songwriting rules. They also make excellent use of atmospheric and/or electronic effects to heighten their sound, which I always appreciate. I wouldn't say Juno is one of my favourite songs of theirs, but there's no denying its quality. If I were to recommend another one to check out it would probably be Hexes, Seven Names, or Beneath My Skin. Thank you for the reaction as always bro, it's never less than brilliant to hear you experience new music I love and unpack what makes it so great. Have a damn. Good. DAY!

    • @sugoruyo
      @sugoruyo 4 года назад

      The amazing thing about Tesseract is that, through a combination of an interesting, not super-brutal sound, lack of growls and Daniel's smooth voice and poppy tone, they are somehow accesssible to non-metalheads. I've played this to pop listeners and they got down with it. They don't appreciate the music theory behind (neither can I frankly) but, they got down.

    Chase going down the prog metal rabbit hole? this 'bout to get even better! One thing I love about the "prog groove" is how the kick drums are often used to highlight the syncopation and emphasize the rhythm being played on the guitars, and I just love how well it bridges the rhythmic and harmonic elements together. To me that's where the fun is in prog music in general. I'm gonna have to suggest The Contortionist - Language (Reimagined) next, it's another great prog band with a _lot_ to unpack.

    I was a regular at the Pitz in Milton Keynes around 2007 when TesseracT were putting out their first demo. Sometimes it felt like they were the house band as they appeared on that stage quite regularly, headlining the local band nights. They were a bit heavier then and the vocalist at that time was more suited to more aggressive tracks. There was a lot of pressure for bands to be heavier, louder, faster and 'more brutal' back then and TesseracT kinda bucked the trend and went in a different direction. Delighted they 'made it'. The drums always stuck out for me - their drummer spent a lot of time waving his hands in the air hitting cymbals with a really slow tempo on the snare (a lot of the ghost notes went unnoticed in those early days). In contrast, most of the other local bands at the time were punk-based and were pretty relentless battering away on the snare. It made TesseracT a very welcome change and actually contributed to them sounding heavy.
    MK was pretty vibrant for live music back then with a good range of local bands and plenty of signed and unsigned touring acts passing through the Pitz. I even caught a South African band there called Dorp (formerly The Fauves).
    "Hexes" would be a good track to go next. If you like the vocalist here there are several other projects worth checking out. White Moth Black Butterfly is very atmospheric and really showcases his vocals but if you want a complete change of direction the 80s-inspired synthpop of ZETA shows his versatility.
    Good work with the reaction, as always.

    I'm one of those annoying people who have been requesting Tesseract! I've been a fan of them since their debut album, so I'm really happy you enjoyed them :) I requested Hexes, but honestly, all their songs are amazing. Daniel is an amazing vocalist (he's a vocal coach as well) and he also does harsh vocals, so you might want to check those out. Also, Tesseract had another singer for their second album. He was great too, but just be aware of that ;) PS. Yes, this is prog metal, but it fits more into the type of prog metal called djent.

    Earthside - Contemplation of the beautiful (feat. Eric Zirlinger)
    You won't hear another song like this one. A tragic jam filled with so much pain and sorrow. Eric Zirlinger's vocals on this track simply blows it out of the window.
    Earthside are a small prog metal band from the US which love to expirement with a lot of different instruments and musical spects (opera style, arabic, etc.). But they made it work. They also worked with Daniel Tompkins (Vocals for Tesseract) on one song. But for me personally this might be one of the most enjoyable track which has ever been written. I would love to see you react to that. 😇

    Hoped you would react to them and very happy you liked them. They are an awesome and very unique band. Funnily enough i first found out about them on a concert, where they were the headlining act and jinjer were their supporting act. It was an amazing evening, but there was a little problem...after jinjer left the stage nearly two third of the people there left with them and TesseracT played only in front of a few people, although their gig was sold out. It was really sad to withness how more and more people where going away during their set. The vocalist was pretty pissed at the end.

    As much as I love Daniel Tompkins as a vocalist, I feel like Ashe O'Hara on "Altered State" really sent it over the edge for a band like Tesseract with such subdued technicality and expansive/reverbed soundscapes. Altered State is less of a traditional album and more like a concept album split into 4 chapters. The album literally changed my life. If you could react to either of the songs from the Second Chapter of the album, "Of Mind -," either "Nocturne (pretty much most popular on the album)" or "Exile (arguably most technical track on the album, and the longest) I would bust a nut, literally.

    Oh wow, really nice cymbal work and upholding interesting tension, avoiding ordinary ways. As someone who is often having a hard time coping with vocalists, especially soft/high pitched juvenile male voices (they remind me of high school punk rock, which is fine, but not exactly what I enjoy on a daily basis), I can surely cope with his voice. Love me a thicc chord wall and they still manage to deliver it light-footed. Having said that, Vitalism - Pagan Part II official music video ist still waiting for you (:

    You know, I wasn't sure I liked the color of his voice at first but it's growing on me. The music is brilliant tho. Right up my alley. Thanks for bringing them onto my radar.
    I wonder if you've checked out Katatonia before. Maybe try Untrodden from their newest album, or Behind the Blood, or, you know, someone else might have a better suggestion.

    Really love your videos, it's nice to see such thoughtful and in depth reviews on these tracks, would love to see you check out Tesseract's track Smile, it's off the same album as this song, make sure you check out the album version though, the single version was released early and was somewhat unfinished, they really honed it in to it's full potential in the final product. Keep up the great content man!

    Sub for sure.
    Edit: also, the singer from tesseract features on a song called a dream in static by earthside. His vocals in that song are AMAZING.

    At the first mention of progressive metal I got really excited because my first thought was "Symphony X"-like. This wasn't anywhere near that!...but great nonetheless. Yes as people have pointed out this is a rather unique sounding band...usually this type of music goes for a completely different vocal style but this works well with their 'structure' I guess would be the best word for it. Thumbs up!

    As it seems like you are enjoying the prog stuff recently, I'd recommend something by Allegaeon. 'Apoptosis' or 'Proponent for Sentience III' would be my suggestions. 'Animate' is also a great one, particularly if you would like a 'friendlier' introduction to the band.
