Makes me realise how truly lucky we were. We were out for a drive one summer evening and saw our perfect home . We weren’t even looking. We waited a year then it came on the market. It seems to be, in Britain, that that's not a first choice for many homeowners. they seem to look, with disdain, upon new builds, as they call them, and don't like newer properties. you would think that's a great option: to buy some lovely land and custom build a beautiful home on it. but they don't do that because it lacks "character" and "a feeling". 😐

They looked at huge homes compared to what they had with a couple with beautiful gardens and land. I felt bad because while they were so centred on mourning what they sold they were not centred on the months going by and their million pounds losing weight and thus losing its buying power. While mourning the brick and mortar they sold they were left joyless such a shame as every day is so precious as no one knows what tomorrow with bring so grab it and squeeze every bit of joy out of it. I felt really bad for Phil as he showed them some lovely big and beautiful homes but they had yet to bury the home they left behind. 😟

The couple who sold their "perfect" house because a child was born seems extreme, particularly if they hadn't found another house. At 33:05, we finally hear that the "perfect" house was 800 square feet. So, what we were shown at the beginning of this episode was misleading, because that house did NOT look like a one-bedroom house, but certainly sounds like it was. As for their "search", if you've been house hunting for 2 years with a million-pound budget, it's time to admit you do not want to find a house. Even 20 years ago, you could go to an agent, give them your budget and your "wants" and they would find you several possibilities within your parameters. I understand wanting to buy a house that has "that feeling", but if you spend 2 years and haven't found it, there's more to the story. The wife looks miserable, and they both have unrealistic ideas of "quiet". I can only imagine that it's gotten worse for them since 2009. At least the son would be well out of it now and at university, wherever he grew up!
For me, house #2 (the Georgian) would have been a "yes"; I cannot imagine what the price of that house is today (2023)!

Tbh nothing will make them happy, because they are hanging on To the dream of when they were happier in life. That is what they remember is happy memories. And nothing else can make you happy if you arent happy within.

Looking at that second million dollar house on 3/4 of an acre but looking like a huge plot all the way around the house, I wonder, are British acres bigger than American ones? Or is the plot size in addition to the 'peoprty' (house) area? Or are these camera people just amazing at making small yards look huge?

Watching it again, I was wrong. It was only 'a third of an acre', half the size of our place, yet it has that enormous house, looks to be at least twice the size of ours (32' x 40' footprint) and lawn and outbuildings, and plantings and all. I just don't see how they fit all that onto 1/3 of an acre! It's amazing! Having the house literally on the lot line helps some (we have to be at least 5' off here) but it's still amazing. Or, is just the garden, just the grassy area, subtracting, somehow, the footprint of each building, the one third acre?

People with a million dollars or pounds seem to think the whole world should crawl to them on its knees. They tend to be entitled and arrogant from what I've seen. After all - a million pounds doesn't go that far in the Home Counties, and 2 million is a joke in Central London. The period house I grew up in in the Midwestern U.S. would easily be worth over 1 million in England. The husband needs to get over himself and face the fact that 1 million isn't that much in the location he wants. However, millionaires are the hardest people to find property for because they're just using Phil and Kirsty as servants to check out the market for them.
