      there's this scene in the comics from when Spawn was stuck in hell so he took over, where he's blasting necrofire into the foreground and yelling "NOW BOW DOWN" and in the panel below Violator is all 'never!', that works well as imagery. I've seen the page online before but I haven't found it yet.

      party are forced to their knees and the cobblestone beneath their knees cracks and breaks from the sheer force of the impact
      There that's better

    I like the idea and execution of the graviturgy wizard a lot. The level 2 weight control feature is unlimited and have a wide array of uses. It seems to be a wonderful suite of spell like effects that can be great at any level, but especially at lower levels when you have so few slots. The average str based PC will be able to jump about 34 ft horizontally while under this effect, dashing for the 10ft start. Will be able to reach about 20ft high under the same circumstances.
    Gravity well doesn’t have a limit on uses so it can effect many creatures at once, and potentially multiple times a round as creatures enter ongoing spell effects. Can enhance spells that already incorporate forced movement, or enhance spells that wouldn’t normally have it such as scorching ray to have a hanger chance of movement if that’s a priority. Gust of wind could move even more creatures in the right circumstances.
    It also doesn’t specify it has to be a creature that isn’t the caster, so you can move yourself too.
    The sleet storm spell would be more powerful for crowd control and hindering movement. Creatures that fail the first save could be pulled 5ft toward the center, standing up and difficult terrain may make this one more round for creatures to get free.
    The reaction to increase weapon damage or fall damage may seem niche but if you wait for other party members to crit or force fall damage on your own spells it can add up. You might not be able to rely on one teammate to crit, but with the table full someone will.

      Ooph, as a dm, that Gravity Well Sleet Storm combo hurts my soul.

    • @binolombardi
      @binolombardi 4 года назад +1

      AoAD yea it can be really add up. The lack of combat value rating seems to be based on what the features do by themselves. They can amplify the power of any party that has another caster. Having options to force multiple creatures into ongoing spell effects is ridiculous and this class seems to be the best at it. Seems like amazing options unless you have a lot of strength melee fighters.

    While Graviturgy seems underwhelming at first glance, when coupled with the new gravity based spells (as well as similiar spells of old) its features make it one of the best (if not the best) battlefield controllers in 5e.
    For example, using ray of frost with gravity well reduces most creatures to essentially half their movement until the start of your next turn. Alternatively for more fun let's go with a 2nd level magic missile and combine it with gravity well and violent attraction. With four darts you can push a target 20 feet up in the air, deal 4d4+4 force damage plus 2d6 bludgeoning fall damage and an additional 2d10 on top. And if you go into eldritch blast territory with repelling blast and lance of lethargy, it gets even crazier.
    And mind you there are no saves for all of this forced movement. So if you're next to a cliff or on an airship or rooftop, it's game over for the enemies and a mere 5 feet forced movement becomes a combat ender.

      Magic Missile doesn't actually interact with Gravity Well since there is no attack roll or saving throw involved in Magic Missile

    • @TheLordofMetroids
      @TheLordofMetroids 4 года назад +2

      Gravity well says "hits with an attack," not "hits with an attack ROLL," that means you don't need an attack roll to activate it's effect. Magic missile totally works.

    This subclass feels very combat focused, although it doesn't really appeal to me. Some of the abilities are too complex or just underwhelming (5ft, really) and there's nothing that enhances the graviturgy wizard as a person in the campaign. I definitely agree with the point about the force damage, that feels more thematic and flexible. One thing that confuses me is the restriction on new spells and if they're more powerful than the other 5e spells, are these subclasses less powerful just to make them balanced?
    Also, no reactions? Have you heard of the ready action with fireball? It's a classic!
    My main thought when I saw the description was how similar this is to a NPC/subclass I have for my campaign. The working name is the astronomer and while it does include some gravity based spells, it more space stuff in general, so there's fire from suns, bludgeoning from meteors and acid/cold from that creepy void of space. I'm also going to include some roleplay things like navigating using stars and being able to tell when in the day/night it is (overlapping with the keen mind feat). The graviturgy subclass comes across as too specific and somewhat restrictive. We'll have to see what the new spells are and until then I'll try to keep an open mind.

    I think you guys kinda missed some of the fun of gravity well. Placing down ongoing spells that damage creatures when they enter or start their turn in them. Then moving creatures back into them while your frontline combatants make it hard for them to move too far away from it.

    • @URGE
      @URGE  4 года назад +1

      We did record this ASAP when the book came out and the wording says “when you target...” which was a bit of a weird way to say it. Jeremy Crawford clarifying it makes it better for sure. It definitely makes AOE concentration spells a bit stronger, but it is only 5 feet which is great but not ridiculous or anything (great with difficult terrain). With this in mind, there could potentially be an argument for a slightly higher score (maybe + 0.5 to combat and synergy), but it is only one of the abilities gained and isn’t crazy broken I don’t think.... thanks for watching!

  • @AoAD
    @AoAD 4 года назад +6

    Well, there definitely some fun combos with gravity sinkhole or other spells where you could yank folks up. All in all, it definitely feels like this is a wizard for very creative players, or players who have a certain type synergy with other party members.
    Definitely not a wizard for every party, but still, the idea of making a 4th level gravity sinkhole deal 7d10 on multiple enemies that fails seems like an fun prospect.

    Just had a dirty thought on that increase side/weight ability. Work with a partner to doc its strength. Use the new armorer infusion for the helmet for the jolt to the brain to Keep Constration! And make said creature so heavy and doc of str it cant support it's own weight.
    Just a idea. Cause if you have one going mad. To large. Next round make it go large to huge and zap yourself and not lose conintrasion on the first. Next rould drop the med to large and maintain the leg. 2 huge.
    Dm call be seems legit to me.

    I'm just gonna say, the only thing you talked about in context to the roleplay value, you only talked about checks. Imagine this, you can affect the density on any object within your range. This means that you can affect how heavy something is at will (Assuming your dm lets you). Imagine, you could create full sword in the stone type scenarios that only you, or someone you let, can win. You could set a gold bar in the middle of a village, declare whoever can lift it can keep it, then sit back and watch someone try and lift something you would need a belt of giant strength or equivalent try and lift. Get in an arm wrestling match with someone and make their arm denser and win easily. There are so many good things you can do with this in roleplay. Checks aren't everything.
