I was born in 1983. I grew up with these movies. I got into martial arts, Shotokan specifically, and for me this was odd for me as a kid because of the cultural differences. Over the years I grew to understand Japanese culture. I would not say I am an expert but I do understand more now than I did. I believe there could be a transitional movie between 1 and 2 and I believe people would like it more. Also, it helps to know some history of Japan. I believe as a sequel this film raised the bar in many aspects for the characters and the story.

Sato (Danny Kamekona) was a long time family friend. Back in the mid 90's, a couple years before he passed away, we'd frequently go to Hawaii Football and Baseball games. Danny was good friends with Pat (Mr. Miyagi) and would drive his vehicle to the games. He was super cool and low key, never had his nose in the air.

This is my favorite of the first three. I loved getting a deeper look at Miyagi's past and his roots. Plus, this story took everything Daniel learned in the first movie and put it into a real life conflict situation. This was not a tournament match, but a fight to the death.
Upon my first time seeing this I was a pre-teen. Kumiko has always been my favorite of the first three leading ladies. This story also strengthened the idea even further for me that Daniel had become the son that Miyagi had lost.

Just a few points to clarify:
The reason Chozen was so mad on that earlier scene was b/c Daniel found a weight Chozen was using to cheat the scales for the produce he was selling, so he could get away with charging more money; which was why the customers became angry at Chozen. Chozen was going so hard at Daniel b/c he was Mayagi's student, and he hated Myagi b/c of his uncle...so, it's understandable within the context of the story...
When Sato was telling Myagi the village would be destroyed, he wasn't saying that was the condition if Myagi lost the fight; he was saying that's what he'd do if Myagi didn't show up to the fight; he was just trying to ensure Myagi would show.
And when Sato was stuck under the beam and was talking trash to Myagi when Myagi's hand was raised in the chopping position, he thought Myagi was going to kill him; he didn't know Myagi was going to chop the beam and help him, so that's why he was mad; b/c with his mentality, he assumed that's what a person would do. lol.
Also, no Johnny in part 3...and I think if you had watched the Karate Kid before watching Cobra Kai, you would likely deem Johnny as a meaner villain; he's not as bad as Chozen, but remember he pushed Daniel down a cliff while Daniel was on his bike; and remember how brutally he beat him up at that halloween dance until Myagi saved him...
Johnny didn't seem as bad b/c Myagi made a deal with Cobra Kai not to attack Daniel while training for the tournament; if not for that, Johnny would have been terrorizing Daniel probably as bad as Chozen. Karate Kid came out 30 years before Cobra Kai and everyone thought Johnny was a complete dick; but then Cobra Kai came out and altered the public's perception, and we invested in Johnny's redemption story. Which is why people who watched Cobra Kai BEFORE the Karate Kid movie don't think Johnny was all that bad. But...he WAS. lol. he was actually on my short list of best villains. he was the perfect villain you want to see defeated...
But he does have a really good redemption story in Cobra Kai, so I see why you and many others like him. Chozen has a good redemption story in Cobra Kai, as well.
You probably should watch Karate Kid 3 before Cobra Kai seasons 4 & 5. KK3 is not nearly as good as the first two; the screenwriting took a major decline. But Terry Silver is another excellent villain; but the way they wrote him he was a bit over-the-top; had the writing been better, they would have toned him down a bit and he'd have been even more memorable. Mike Barnes is a good villain, as well. You should definitely watch even if you don't do a reaction video.
Good to see you listen to the comments and watch this one; I was really curious to see your opinion since you liked the first one so much.

The difference is that Chosen gets worse as the movie goes on, whereas Johnny by the time of the tournament is questioning the way Kreese is treating both Daniel and the Cobra Kai fighters. Also, in the first movie Daniel can be kind of obnoxious and so you can understand why Johnny goes after him, whereas in Part 2 Daniel is pretty much flawlessly heroic.

Actually it was the villagers who were selling their crops, not the other way around.
Remember Miyagi said they went from being a fishing village to farmers.

Chozen was actually unknowingly ripping himself off as he would be getting less vegetables for his money with lighter weights. It was a plot hole which they address in Cobra Kai season 5, episode 9 when Carmen asks:
"Wait, if the weight was fake, wouldn’t that mean you were scamming yourself out of money and not the villagers?"

I believe you two didn't fully grasp with the movie is that Japanese culture has respect for honor in the warrior lifestyle ingrained in it's national history. Even today family honor is highly upheld still. Sato's grudge was not really exaggerate as you would think, especially even more 40 years ago! Sato wasn't gonna destroy the village if he won, only if Mr Miyagi still didn't show up at 12am! Sato still couldn't wait any longer for his honor! Great reaction you 2! I believe while it may have been written for part 1, it was still filmed during part 2. The reason why, is because, if you pay close attention to Dutch (Chad McQueen) leaning against the car. He's wearing a blonde wig, under his cap. It is well known that Chad McQueen (a brunette) dyed his hair blonde for KK1.
So by the time they started filming KK2 (two years later), he was brunette, so they tried not to put the camera close on him. And put a baseball cap on his head to further cover the ridiculous blonde wig.

Both one and two have strong points for each of them, and it's hard to choose which is better. I love the "Mr Miyagi" back story in this along with Daniel's growth as a character. A lot of heart. The way the movie opens up right at the end of the first movie was a nice touch. By the way, the weights Chosen was using on his scales were bad, and meant to skew in his favor. Daniel exposed him as a cheater, which is why Chosen hated him so much. I loved Chosen in Cobra Kai, especially season 5, to see his turn around as a character is cool. Getting to see Daniel stand side by side with Johnny and Chosen in the show as friends, is great.
You are both right. Daniel's girlfriend in this movie does make an appearance in the series, along with the girl Daniel saved. 3 is my least favorite of the movies, but it's where Terry Silver comes in, so there is that.

Speculation: When Miyagi brought in the condition that the village be saved no matter who wins the fight with Sato, I believe Miyagi would've just let Sato kill him. After all, he already got what he wanted out of it, & he'd been trying to resolve the matter peacefully. When it became clear Sato wouldn't entertain an amicable resolution, Miyagi decided his life was a small price to pay for the village.

Both Chozen and Kumiko appear in Cobra Kai season 3, and the little girl Daniel saves is the one that saves his business in season 3.
You really should have watched The Karate Kid III before watching Cobra Kai seasons 4-5, as they are both tied very closely to that film.

I liked it better because I liked Miyagi more than Johnny, the Japanese girlfriend more than 1st one. Daniel telling Miyàgi about his Dad dying was better than him giving Daniel the car. And him breaking the ice with big money bet, pressure..Was better than the tournament, and his last fight was better than final vs Johnny. Plus the music was better too, PeterCetera, Glory of Love!

Chozen was cheating in the market place with counterfeit weights. Back in the days of using scales, you would need weights of known mass to figure out the weight of the products. He was cheating with those to get a better deal for his money. Those weights were made from metal, and when Daniel was able to break them with ease, it proved they were not real.

The thing about the orients is that especially at that time the woman has really no say so if she was patroved to Soto and she did not marry him then the repercussions was that she was probably disowned by her family. Also with honor there honor is a serious thing and it can last up until the day you die. To Soto everything he was doing he was trying to get back his honor and by giving yaki 3 days to mourn was his sign of respect for his teacher because he didn't have respect for his teacher he will have killed or tried to kill miyagi right then and there. She was basically the ruler of the village because of how rich he was in a sense he owned the village it's about the same way as you look at the head of like a mafia or a big time gang that runs that area you talk back to them you pay the consequences.

In the third part of Karate Kid, you'll meet the villain Terry Silver, who also appears in Cobra Kai, so it wouldn't be a bad idea to watch that one as well and complete the trilogy before going all the way to Cobra Kai.

I basically agree with y'alls rankings. Great movie, but not quite as good as the first. But the first one is so good the sequel really never had a chance to top it, there weren't any flaws in it to correct so how do you make something better?

  • @boomzer10
    @boomzer10 Год назад +2

Karate Kid 3 is probably the weakest out of the first 3 Karate Kid movies but received praise for the actor who played Terry Silver (one of villains in the movie). Even though the movie might be a little weak compared to the first 2 you should probably watch it before watching the 4th and 5th seasons of Cobra Kai. A lot of the plot from seasons 4 and 5 mainly evolves around Karate Kid 3.

I have always thought Karate Kid 2 was a little bit better than the first one, but thinking about it now, I think there are both equally as good. Just to let you know, Karate Kid 3 is not very good at all, but you will want to watch it anyway as it will be important to follow Cobra Kai.

I like them both equally. 5 stars for both. The difference between the two for me was that KK1 was more of a realistic true story type of thing, whereas KK2 was way more of a ‘80s over the top fantasy film. I didn’t get to see karate kid 1 in the theater, but I did for the 2nd. KK2 came out in the summer of ‘86, so I would’ve been 10 going on 11 and I loved it. I had some of the toys and everything. I still remember some of the trailers and tv spots for the film. One of them if I’m not mistaken was of Pat Morita in the lobby of a theater eating popcorn and talking about KK2 and advertising the film. I been trying to find it on RUclips to no avail. Have you guys seen Gremlins yet? If you haven’t, BOY ARE YOU GIRLS IN FOR A TREAT! What can I say, another excellent reaction from you fine girls. 🍿🎥🎞🎬📽👍
