The elements taken from a lot of old school Hong Kong magical phantasy kung-fu movies are great. You can tell the creators are fans of the genre, both celebrating it and making fun of it at the same time. But they manage to make a movie that is highly entertaining even if you've never seen any. Kurt Russell and John Carpenter are magical together. They are very good friends privately and some of their DVD commentary tracks are the funniest I've heard. They may start talking about the movie, but it just turns into them catching up, telling old stories and gossiping. You feel like you're listening in on a private conversation. Another great movie with Russell directed by Carpenter is Escape from New York (1981). Here Russell is more of a real action hero than a comedic sidekick like in this one. Still over the top though with his confidence and cockiness. :D
The problem with movies these days is they are only interested in money. When they find something that works and makes money, they keep doing the same thing over and over. As long as people keep paying to see the same movie over and over, they will not change and we will not see anything new. Back in the 80s they were all new and unique movies every year.
@@kevinerose For a while I've said that the movie industry (and TV) seems to want to create what the music industry has created. A formula to roll out a constant money making machine. In music they started this years ago and have a few song writers and producers that create the majority of bland garbage music over and over and over and they make money from it. Hollywood seems to want to do the same thing but people aren't putting up with it and they are rejecting so much of the new crap that comes out. We have heard of many directors saying that they are offered movies but told the action scenes are already worked out in advance so they don't get to work on those. We see a lot of new movies and shows being given to first time directors with almost zero experience. Even the laughable Rings Of Power, the most expensive TV show ever made, was given to two guys with almost zero experience. None of that makes any sense until you factor in that they do not want the producers and directors to create their vision for the movie. The companies just want someone to manage the project and push out the vision the studio wants. In other words they removed the talented people from the movie making process. Every now and then you get something good that slips through the cracks but so much ends up just being garbage.
Honestly, I feel like audience's say they want "fun" movies, but then complain about it because I feel people these days would rather come across as some wannabe film critic intellect, than actually enjoy entertainment. You have some movies where you'll get this sleeper hit, fun movie that audiences enjoyed, but it's almost like if unless the fun movie is like some outrageous comedy, like The Hangover or something, it's looked down upon...
@@kevinerose you have to remember there were remakes in the 80s the Blob and The Thing. At least those examples went far beyond to make a creative yet fresh takes. Today's remakes and reboots are soulless cashgrabs with no sense of originality and respect for the source materials. Lately they're USING nostalgia to hook and unapologetically saturate the audiences for views and their cash.
“This really pisses me off to no end!” always makes me laugh, coming from an ancient sorcerer. I’ve loved this movie so much, and been disappointed that nobody else I know likes it or has even seen it. Two of my old friends only recently discovered it and they think it’s great. One of them bought t-shirts for all three of us.
An absolute classic action-fantasy-comedy. I wish Carpenter had did more like this. I have a movie poster on my wall for it among others. So many memorable lines.
This movie is still holds up as a classic 80's action movie with tons of creativity woven into it. Reflecting on the film now, I can say it's a bit campy, but Big Trouble is still one my all time fav action flicks!

When he asked John Carpenter about it, he told Kurt that it didn't matter to him - he just wanted to make the movie with him. John Carpenter and Kurt Russell explain on the audio commentary that the test screening was so overwhelmingly positive, that both of them expected it to be a big hit. In addition, the film was released in the midst of the hype for Aliens (1986), which was released sixteen days afterwards. However, it went on to be a huge cult hit through home video. The best way to watch this movie, is to watch it three times back to back, with the last time starting at 2 AM. That last time, you will swear this movie is the greatest thing ever.
Movie upends the norm. Kurt Russell (doing John Wayne after having done Clint Eastwood in Escape from NY) is actually the sidekick. Its Wang who is the real action hero. Role reversal. Saw it in theaters and the audience erupted in applause at the end. The Bluray has been viewed a lot for neophytes...and myself.

When I was a kid our local HBO alternative was "Prism" out of Philadelphia. "Big Trouble in Little China" was shown every day I think, for an entire summer. As kids we watched it over and over again, and it just kept getting funnier. It's that type of movie.
All John carpenter movie must be watched! Particularly starman, assault on precinct 13, escape from New York, the Thing, and others. He is also the master of minimalist creepy theme music!
A fantastically bonkers movie that is written better than most films in the last decade. A great mash-up of a comedy, action, sci-fy, fantasy film. I love how they make a joke about a situation instead of trying to make sense of it with exposition. "How did you get up there?.... It wasn't easy!!" Great reaction, lovely ladies. 👍👍
I hope Natalie is feeling better and that you have been immune to whatever she had. 😆 Also, if Natalie sees this, I hope her birthday wasn't just a big cough attack. 👍
One of my favorite movies.. grew up on it.. and Kurt is just a beautiful beautiful man! I did get to meet James Hong (lo pan) and he's just the sweetest man! Love him! Also met John Carrpenter and made him laugh.
This is my favorite movie. It is always only 2 clicks away on my phone or computer. I saw it in the theater. Anytime I catch something I state..... It's all in the reflexes.
I discovered this at 21 and for 14 years its Still one of my fav movies of all time hehe. The movies sense of self awareness only adds to the comedy. Always keep apart of that inner child alive.
I don’t know if it’s been said or not but one thing a lot of people overlook about this movie is that the character of Jack Burton is the side kick almost comic relief of the movie. This is important because it makes Wang the hero which was unusual for Hollywood. They were just starting to look at a hero being a none white person in a movie. A little side note, according to interviews the fight scene at the end used about 2/3s of the films budget to create.
This was originally meant to be a sequel to The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai (1984), another cult classic "gonzo" comedy starring Peter Weller, Jeff Goldblum, and John Lithgow . but it didnt do well, so the script got repurposed. Banzai's villain was supposed to be "Hanoi Xan", a chinese mastermind villain not unlike Lo Pan in this.
If you enjoyed this movie, I recommend the "Last Dragon"... Fairly similar style, and made about the same time... A little more similar to this, the "Golden Child", with Eddie Murphy, also made about the same time. I, personally, would place "Big Trouble in Little China" as a slightly better overall package, but I grew up on all three of these movies, and have seen them all over and over.
I was 16 when this came out and absolutely loved it!!! My brother and I watched it over and over and knew the lines of the movie, word for word. Great review!!!

This is one of my favorite movies. I used to have this on rotation in my mini movie library as a kid. It was "The Golden Child", "Mannequin" and "Big Trouble in Little China". Seen it tons of times. Hilarious and action packed.
My movie rotation as a kid was this movie, Harry and the Hendersons, Masters of the Universe, Raising Arizona, and The Princess Bride. Come to think of it, I guess it hasn’t changed too much in the last 37+ years.

One of the funniest Action Comedy Martial Arts Fantasy movies ever made! Originally Jack Nicholson and Clint Eastwood were considered for the role of Jack Burton and that the film was going to be a western taking place in 1900 San Francisco. Burton was going to be a gunslinger meeting up with an old friend Wang Chi, an expert in Martial Arts and ancient Chinese mysticism where he tries to help him fight off Lo Pan, an evil centuries old sorcerer who plans to destroy San Francisco with an earthquake. There were going to be a sequel and reboot to the movie with Dwayne The Rock Johnson and Kurt Russell playing Burton and a skeptical trucker where they must fight off Lo Pan once more Both of these films would be cancelled due to Fox Disney merger.
@10:20 Moments like Kurt Russell's character in this movie, WAS the reason guys got mullets in the first place! They looked funny later on but at the moment guys like him made it look like it good.
I enjoyed watching this movie in the theater when my parents took me. I remember my parents laughing throughout the movie. A couple of other action/comedy 80's movies I recommend are Running Scared w/Billy Crystal and Gregory Hines and Midnight Run w/Robert De Niro and Charles Grodin. Good stuff ladies!
"Feels like Star Wars..." John Carpenter was inspired by a Hong Kong movie called "Zu: Warriors from the Magic Mountain" which is, without hyperbole, one of the most bonkers crazypants movies ever. Often called the Steven Spielberg of Hong Kong for his string of popular, visually striking hits, film-maker Tsui Hark made Zu after seeing Star Wars, inspiring him to make a classic Chinese fantasy with Hollywood visual effects, hiring some of the Star Wars FX crew to work on it. The end result is... dizzying to say the least... The script for "Big Trouble" was originally a Western. Jack was a cowboy trying to get back his horse, not his truck. It was inspired by the Tong Wars, real-life gang violence between Chinese criminal factions in San Francisco in the 1860's. Carpenter and the studio decided it would work better if they started in the more familiar present day to represent "reality" before they descended into the bizarre subterranean madness.
@@pitmatix1457 It's a bit much for newbies. I'd start them off on wuxia everyone knows about like "Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon" and "Hero" and then some more accessible stuff like "Storm Riders" and "Tai Chi Zero" and then they might be ready for the zaniness of Zu and Mr Vampire. Drinkable or smokable mood enhancers might be a good idea too.
Great movie, loved it as a kid when we saw it in the drive-in, still love it now. As has been stated, if Escape from New York saw Kurt Russell channeling his inner Clint Eastwood, Big Trouble sees him incorporating his John Wayne. Loved him and Dennis Dun (Wang Chi) in this, they play off each other really well.
there were urban legends that chinatowns had portals. love this movie. james hong who plays lo pan, was the voice of po's adopted goose father in all kung fu panda movies. that beast was a bigfoot, a chinese breed called a yeren.
I was an 80's kid and I can't even count how many times I've watched this movie. And FYI a lot of the lore from the Mortal Kombat video games were influenced from this movie.
oh you are spot on Michelle about Kurt R being one of the actors who did auditions fo HAN SOLD. There are a couple of short interviews in Y tube where he discusses it. He really is one of the best all around actors.
Another gem of the 80s, good job girls 😁 I remember back then in 1987, had been seeing Christine, Escape from NY and Starman before that one, I wasn't even sure what I was really watching - it was so different that those three and everything else Carpenter directed up until that point. I had great fun nevertheless in the cinema, and went to see it again immediately a few days later. My admiration for that movie only rose since.
One of my favorites--because of its commitment to the world it builds and its own wacky logic---and the line: "May the wings of liberty never loose a feather""
Ladies, glad you enjoyed Big Trouble in Little China. It's a great flick. I saw it when it came out and watched it so many times since. So many 80's movies were fun and creative without all the CGI overdone. Practical effects may date the movie a bit, but really does goes give it a grounding that just can't be overlooked. If you want to check out another fun 80's movie, may I recommend : The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across The Eight Dimension Staring the likes of Peter Weller, John Lithgow , Jeff Goldblum, Ellen Barkin and so many more. You may want to read the synopsis on it first - it moves pretty quick, so it could help. Love your review. Cheers Darren
@@davestang5454 - well not like they do today - but yeah they existed. They were in their infancy. I take it you have a different opinion. Technically 1973 Westworld is credited with the use of CGI. ( it got better ) . I take it you were born after that point - right? Oh - and replying to such a old comment - bit of a surprise. Best wishes.
Lopan is one of the greatest film villains of all time. James Hong is amazing in this role. Glad you liked him & this fantastic film as well. @@ForceOfLightEntertainment Great, now you are ready for "Puss In Boots: The Last Wish". I know it sounds funny, but that film is nearly perfect. Even if you haven't seen Shrek 2 or Puss in Boots 1, the film is surprisingly deep and wonderful. Know you'll both love it ✌️
actually there is a long running theory that this movie would've never happened with out Kurt attached to the film. Its written as a Chinese action film. his character is a side kick. Wang is the main hero. Without Kurt, he was the money maker to get people to go see it.
I originally saw it in theater. I used to buy the magazine star log and it was featured in the new section of movies coming out in the next couple of months. If get a chance buy a back issue. Back then there was no RUclips. Internet. People talked to each other.
There's a movie series with Kurt Russell as a teenager one of them is called the computer wore tennis shoes great movies. Edit: Just Googled them there were three movies in the "Dexter Riley" movies, a trilogy of three high-concept Disney fantasy-comedies starring Kurt Russell as Dexter, with Joe Flynn and Cesar Romero. Kurt Russell begin the trilogy when he was 18.
That is correct, Kurt Russell did audition for the role of Han Solo in Star Wars back in 1975, along with John Travolta and Sylvester Stallone. I believe George Lucas finally decided that Kurt was a bit too young to play Han Solo at the time, as he was the same age as Mark Hamill, who played Luke Skywalker.
I have a crush on Kurt Russell! He's funny, charismatic and gorgeous! He has that range. He can play any role. I recently rewatched this. It's so good, I'll watch it over and over again!
Such a great movie. John Carpenter in his golden era. Kurt Russell is a hoot in this. I worked with James Hong, the actor playing Lo Pan, on a short-lived sit com in L.A.. He thought he knew me from somewhere, but I assured him he had not, because I would have remembered that.
I love this movie so much. It’s such a fun ride. And there was this thing John Carpenter and Kurt Russell were doing in each of the films they did together where Kurt would be aping a different actor of westerns. Escape from New York Snake was Clint Eastwood. Big Trouble in Little China Jack Burton was John Wayne. Not sure who McCreary was in The Thing though.
I loved this movie since I was kid.I was 8 when this came out. Watching it asan adult I realized that Jack isn’t actually the hero, Wang is. Jack the sidekick who thinks he’s the hero. He talks a big game but is more of a buffoon. But you can’t help but like him. In the end he says they day with great reflexes. What a guy.
Kurt starred in 4 carpenter movies. But one of the funniest movies of all time start Kurt, it's called Used Cars! And the producers writers directors of that movie, are a who's who, of Hollywood!

There were going to be a sequel and reboot to the movie with Dwayne The Rock Johnson and Kurt Russell playing Burton and a skeptical trucker where they must fight off Lo Pan once more
Both of these films would be cancelled due to Fox Disney merger.
If they remake this movie the actors in it would not Do it justice cause they can't find actors like them any more
There had been talk of a remake with Dwayne Johnson.
@@davestang5454 Anything for a buck! Bloody Hollyweird and their remakes!
Thanks for watching!
And, I first saw this on 📀 back in 2007.
Gorgeous redhead
I love this movie! Its represents what was best with the 80s!
"Feels like Star Wars..."
John Carpenter was inspired by a Hong Kong movie called "Zu: Warriors from the Magic Mountain" which is, without hyperbole, one of the most bonkers crazypants movies ever.
Zu Warriors is great. Loved it and Mr Vampire, great Hong Kong fantasy movies
Great film for Chinese New Year 🧧
Great movie, loved it as a kid when we saw it in the drive-in, still love it now.
We really shook the pillars of heaven.
I was an 80's kid and I can't even count how many times I've watched this movie. And FYI a lot of the lore from the Mortal Kombat video games were influenced from this movie.
23:15 😂 23:54 Wang flips the floor.
For some genuine cosmic horror, try reacting to John Carpenter's "Prince of Darkness."
Love, love, love this movie. Huge John Carpenter fan and this was one of his best films.
This movie is where the creators of Mortal Kombat got their idea for the game 🐉
i like how the big baddie doesnt have to be defeated or tricked, he just blows himself up by getting huffy and puffy
This reaction will appease my Emperor indeed!
Wang is the hero of the story Jack is the sidekick lol.
💯😂😂
It was fun in the early eighties.
This is my favorite movie of all time! I always pop for the fight between Wang Chi and Rain!
oh you are spot on Michelle about Kurt R being one of the actors who did auditions fo HAN SOLD. There are a couple of short interviews in Y tube where he discusses it. He really is one of the best all around actors.
Movie is pretty good. I took my kid to the fancy movie theater event that the dinner theater does every year. My kid loved the audience participation.
Another gem of the 80s, good job girls 😁
I remember back then in 1987, had been seeing Christine, Escape from NY and Starman before that one, I wasn't even sure what I was really watching - it was so different that those three and everything else Carpenter directed up until that point.
I had great fun nevertheless in the cinema, and went to see it again immediately a few days later. My admiration for that movie only rose since.
A good double feature with this one would be THE GOLDEN CHILD starring Eddie Murphy.
If you want to check out another fun 80's movie, may I recommend :
The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across The Eight Dimension
Staring the likes of Peter Weller, John Lithgow , Jeff Goldblum, Ellen Barkin and so many more. You may want to read the synopsis on it first - it moves pretty quick, so it could help.
Love your review.
Cheers
Darren
Yes.... great call Buckaroo Banzai !!!!!!
Its pronounced BOO TAY!!!!!
@@jefmay3053.... No matter where you go, there you are.
They were not using CGI in the 1980s. Computers did not have that capability.
Enjoying both your genuine energy & looking forward to watching more. Have you seen "Mask of Zorro" with Antonio Banderas and Anthony Hopkins yet? Highly recommend 👍
Thank you!! Love Mask of Zorro!
Know you'll both love it ✌️
Jack Burton is the coolest guy! Or at least he thinks he is.
back in the days it was placed as a comedy at local video shops. and we loved it
Another classic 80's movie that I haven't watched since High School. Love the trip down nostalgia lane. Thanks Michelle and Natalie!
actually there is a long running theory that this movie would've never happened with out Kurt attached to the film. Its written as a Chinese action film. his character is a side kick. Wang is the main hero. Without Kurt, he was the money maker to get people to go see it.
The movie really doesn’t work without him!
There's a drinking game where you watch the movie and have to take a drink every time Jack asks a question.
That might be dangerous haha
Don't do that, you'll be dead 15 minutes into the film!
I originally saw it in theater. I used to buy the magazine star log and it was featured in the new section of movies coming out in the next couple of months. If get a chance buy a back issue. Back then there was no RUclips. Internet. People talked to each other.
Great selection. A fun classic movie!!!
There’s a lot of movies like this, the last star fighter, zapp, twighlight zone. The monster in this film is like chubacca.
It goes back even further than that. Kurt Russell sings and dances in a musical with Buddy Epson.
Saw this movie on home video when I wast kid with my family. That was back when they had video stores, lol.
Egg Shen says, "It will come out of there no more." Jack says, "What will come out of there no more?!?"😆😆
That is correct, Kurt Russell did audition for the role of Han Solo in Star Wars back in 1975, along with John Travolta and Sylvester Stallone. I believe George Lucas finally decided that Kurt was a bit too young to play Han Solo at the time, as he was the same age as Mark Hamill, who played Luke Skywalker.
John Travolta was still a teenager in 1975. Stallone was not yet the "ripped" version of Rocky in 1975.
It's one of my favorite movies ❤️ thank you
You both should react to streets of fire movie it's good.
Might as well have been called "Jack and Wang's Excellent Adventure." So fun.
What a guy.
Jack is awesome 😂🤩
Wang is cooler
Kurt starred in 4 carpenter movies. But one of the funniest movies of all time start Kurt, it's called Used Cars! And the producers writers directors of that movie, are a who's who, of Hollywood!
