OrangeBaskets Hi. I hadn't checked the hand sanitizers but I looked up prices a few days ago, just regular prices, and then I checked how to MAKE your own Hand sanitizer and decided to make my own. It was a lot easier than I had thought. 91 percent alcohol, aloe Vera gel, and if one wants but it's not required, tea tree oil. I've used that oil and it is great as is oregano oil for sinus issues. The ratio is 3 parts to 1 alcohol to gel, plus 10 or 12 drops of the tea tree oil. Mix it together and put it into a cheap pump bottle (like they use for hand sanitizer) and it's as. good as store bought. Probably better, I would think because I REALLY font know if the hand sanitizer formula is actually followed. That sounds kind of paranoid but I know from experience that some manufacturers cheat here and there to make money. Here is a link to where I got the formula: www.azfamily.com/news/stores-out-of-hand-sanitizers-here-s-how-to-make/article_6257b43a-5a57-11ea-86e2-f357df7d78bd.amp.html. I checked it out with other sites formulas and it appears to be valid. Stat safe. God bless you. 🙏
Their day is coming......I found them for 18-22 dollars 2 weeks ago only to come back and see the same masks selling for hundreds of dollars for a box of 50! Come to find out the surgical mask 😷 are no good for protecting yourself anyways. I’ve heard the feds will crack down on the price gouging, not sure how tho 🤷🏾♂️🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽💯
Thank you for spending the time to help others here. If we can get celebrities to wear masks, it may change people's perception. Another promotion idea is to sell bumper stickers that can stuck on the masks, the sticker can be political (ask the 2020 presidential candidates to promote)
That's incorrect. A mask like that can't protect the person wearing it but the other people around them. You use it to prevent the virus from spreading if you happen to have it without realizing it.
Like this video, I’m not suggesting this works great but in an emergency you can also use feminine pads or diapers. When we fit test N95 masks at work (I’m a nurse) to see if the fit is correct, we put the mask on and secure it around the nose and chin, then we are exposed to a smell such as an orange or vanilla, anything really but have another person mist the smell towards your face without you knowing what it is. Otherwise our brains can “think” we smell it. If you cannot smell the mist your mask passes the fit test ! This is just meant to help people with making sure they have the best fit possible in case of emergency but is not full proof !! Stay safe everyone !!!
Thank you for spending the time to suggest your tips and help others. But there could be undesirable chemicals in the diapers, our lung may not like some of the chemicals. The kind of chemical to absorb absorbs moisture, chemicals to mask odors, preservative, bleach, (Tributyl-tin, Dioxins, fragrances etc) may not be good for a healthy lung.
Genius Asian .....I guess you would have to check to see what kind of diapers you use, I’ve never seen diapers with fragrance, silica is used for the moisture absorbers, medical N-95 masks can be white so I would assume they are bleached also and they have an expiration date which diapers and pads don’t, so does that mean masks have a preservative.....???? I don’t know, I guess in an emergency if I was going to be exposed and didn’t have protection for the short time I would need it, I guess I wouldn’t be worried. Everyone has to make up their own minds, it’s just a suggestion !

Just today i used a damp napkin as a mask while sanding joint compound in my kitchen. I the idea of the circular wire for more protection. Thanks for the video.
Yes, sanding dry joint compound can be very dusty, and breathing in smaller particles may cause lung cancer, so make sure you seal the edge well. Thank you for taking the time to share your usage situation.
I just want to thank you for this. I work at Walmart in the meat Dept. and am desperately looking for tips to stay safe, this is one of the best I've seen. Thank you so much. What is your opinion of people being told in the US to not even bother with masks? We are being told that masks do not offer us protection. This seems ludicrous and irresponsible to me.
totally agree, this is not the time to show everyone how brave we are. Surgeon General Jerome Adams is warning Americans to stop buying medical masks, because he wants to save the masks to the medical professionals, not because they are useless.

What do Singapore and China have in common? They use masks, temperature checks and the people naturally practice social distancing. What else do they have in common?Lower numbers of cases. They are beating this and we have just begun. If masks arent effective than why do health care workers need them?We have a critical shortage,we werent prepared so now we are being lied to about their effectiveness.Masks are common sense. If someone walks by and coughs you aren't getting droplets in your nose and mouth. The government needs to focus on producing more masks and giving them to everybody.locking us inside is doing Jack shit if we are exposed ,unmasked getting groceries.
Ncov is not airborne. Having mask and goggles increase the frequency of face touching and more risk to acquire the virus. Gloves, alcohol, hand soap, multivitamins should be out of stock not face mask
This is just great tips for people who want to avoid buying surgical masks, just like this video points out, surgical masks have limited protection. We need to leave what little stock is available now for the medical professionals, immuno-compromised, and the elderly. This good advice for an alternative for those who are in a lower risk category and yet want to get a better peace of mind. I know the USA is saying masks have a limited effect on it but I will never judge seeing a person on the street wearing one, at least they are trying something. At least they are taking this thing seriously, unlike a large majority of Americans currently are right now.
We appreciate your taking the time to chime in and helping others to protect against the coronavirus spread. We agree, the more people taking this thing seriously, the less likely is the transmission of the viruses.

Thank you. I have very few n95s and surgical masks for a family of 6. I want to save them for outside and DIY something for anyone coughing or sneezing at home.
Great video. Here are ideas for potentially improving the barrier quality. I used to own a t-shirt company which used industrial heat transfers. In the past year, I have been using wax-coated fabrics as a replacement for single-use plastic sandwich bags. Combining these experiences, I would try using wax paper. It could be used straight, as is, added as a layer to a paper DIY mask. Or iron it into either paper towel or cloth fabric to create an impenetrable waterproof barrier. (For ironing you'd need to prevent the wax from sticking to the iron with some kind of protective layer such as a silicone sheet.) Or one could try melting beeswax or paraffin and spreading the wax with a roller onto the fabric, or even soaking the fabric in liquid wax. Additionally, consider periodically applying a drop of an essential oil to the mask, such as a protective blend doTERRA On Guard (search PubMed for published studies of the antiviral properties of that blend as well as many other oils) which has the added benefit of providing support to the body's immune system functioning.
Thank you for taking the time to contribute and to help others. We are making another video to home test different materials, it will help you to verify your barrier quality. It will be published very soon.

@@GeniusAsian It's been two and a half months now since using your reinforcement wire method. I nor anyone else in my household have become ill. I have been asked about the wire and showed how my mask moves in and out as I breathe, that's how much vacuum is being produced by the mask having a good snug seal around my face. I have sent about half a dozen people to your channel. I have now seen about four people with the wire while food shopping. I also watched your other video testing mask material. Yesterday I had an idea which material could be suitable to build a respirator mask. Kitchen towels and napkins are certainly too coarse-pored and thin. But there is a device in many households that needs a filter material, which could also be suitable for respirators. I think of the vacuum cleaner. In my cellar I just found a package with four filters from swirl (PH84, for vacuum cleaners from Philips, Karstadt, Nilfisk and others). These filters are said to have a filter system (micropor), which filters out allergens like pollen, but also bacteria. A package with four filters costs about €7,- here in Germany and it should be possible to make at least 16 masks out of it, if you use the corners of the bags and sew on ribbons.
Thank you for taking the time to chime in to share your tips and to help others. You need to check three things of your own material: 1. does it filter very small particles? 2. does it prevent droplets from seeping through? 3. does it release any harmful chemical to your lung? The vacuum cleaner HEPA bag should be good with #1, but what about #3? Does the bag contain any chemicals to kill the bacteria but harmful to you?

This is why they are saying masks are not necessary unless you have heavy duty mask and you're a health worker. Best thing is to wash your hands well, keep your distance and best of all, don't go out unless absolutely necessary. This means having a stock of supplies and food at home. Danger is false sense of security with a flimsy mask.
agree with you we should take extra precaution not to go to events if not necessary. However if you can't avoid going out, then you should know how to wear your mask correctly, or how to seal the edges of a cheap mask, to reduce the probability of danger.

Thank you for posting this. On a related note, existing face masks can be treated with polyethelyneamine and or catechin, an African plant, to create an effective viral blocking mask; Here are some selected citations; "Studies published by Tiliket et al. and Catel-Ferreira et al. in 2015 demonstrated a cellulose based material for airborne virus filtration in which a low-cost non-woven cellulose material (Kimwipes) were chemically modified by coating them with polyethylenimine (PEI) or grafting in an antiviral agent; catechin." "The filtration efficiency of the modified filter media was first tested on aerosolized T4D viruses (Enterobacteria phage T4, Doermann’s strain T4D). Then the treated filter was inserted inside a commercial medical mask in place of its cellulose layer and the reconstructed mask was challenged with TD4 aerosols to evaluate its virus removal efficiency." "Both treatments significantly improved the virus capture factor (ratio of upstream to downstream PFU contents) of KW cellulose wipes and of reconstructed commercial masks when compared to original masks and to masks reconstructed with untreated wipes." Tiliket, Ghania & Ladam, Guy & Nguyen, Trong & Lebrun, Laurent. (2016) published "Polyethylenimine surface layer for enhanced virus immobilization on cellulose." Search for that article online. Polyethylenimine (PEI) is a polycation, which is readily adsorbed by the cellulose matrix from a 0.1% w/v solution in NaCl 0.2 M (ca. 100 ng cm−2). Further PEI adsorption steps at higher PEI concentrations induce a linear growth of the PEI films, suggesting that free adsorption sites still exist after the initial adsorption. The adsorbed PEI chains are resistant to variations of the ionic strength up to NaCl 1 M. "Promisingly, the adsorption of T4D bacteriophages are *15-fold more efficient* onto the PEI-treated fabric, compared to the native regenerated cellulose films, as measured by QCM-D. This confirms the strong affinity between the negatively charged viruses and PEI, even at low PEI concentration, probably governed by strong electrostatic attractive interactions. This result explains the remarkable improvement of the affinity of medical masks for virus droplets when one of their cellulose layers was changed by two-PEI-functionalized cellulose-based filters." Polyethylenimine is commercially available. This should be of interest to DIY mask makers.

Thank you for your video and ideas. Couple of thoughts. if you don't feel the mask draw in as you inhale, air is coming around the mask. And, a quicker work around it to reuse the disposable masks with wire frame at the top by cutting a hole in the center of the mask, double wrapping it in paper towel or napkin secured by tape. Replace the filter when damp and clean by gently microwaving and spraying with a microban cleaner. This is a last resort idea that MAY provide a little protection. Good Luck to us all.

If you make a wire frame then it may not be necessary to do any kind of fabrication of the mask itself. Just cut a piece of filter material larger than the wire frame, put it on your face and secure with the wire frame. After use throw the fabric away and cut a new piece. The wire frame then could be used over and over.
Thank you for taking the time to contribute and help others. I think double sided medical grade tape may be a potential valid idea. But we still need to scrutinize it more. Even for medical grade tape, for some people still it can cause irritation if you wear long period of time. And we value our face skin more important than the skin on our foot, so take precautions, if the tape is too strong what if it tears a piece of skin off?
As a surgical tech we would often reinforce the seal of our masks with surgical tape across the nose. I never used it on the sides, though. We focused mainly on trying to eliminate gaps where our breath could escape towards the patient. Across the nose there wasn't much impact on the skin.
An interesting question. There may be at least two consequences: 1. alcohol may kill germs at the time it was applied but then it evaporates. When coronavirus lands on the masks, you may not have any alcohol left at that time. 2. the alcohol may have some chemical interaction with the outside's coating which makes it waterproof. If the alcohol dissolves the waterproof material, then dirty droplets may seep through.

I had some dust masks that I started wearing but I've stopped now. I understand they don't really filter out covid-19 particles, and like you say, wearing it might lull me into a false sense of security and lead me to expose myself to situations I wouldn't if I wasn't wearing a mask.
We should avoid to expose yourself to situation regardless you wear or not wear a mask. It is likely someone would sneeze out droplets which is large. The only thing a less effective dust masks is ineffective at is the small aerosol. Aerosol is smaller than droplet. According to CDC, "In settings where facemasks are not available, HCP might use homemade masks (e.g., bandana, scarf) for care of patients with COVID-19 as a last resort. However, homemade masks are not considered PPE, since their capability to protect HCP is unknown. Caution should be exercised when considering this option. What about felt? Its thick, inexpensive and easy to find in craft stores. It repels water since it's so tightly woven Might that be good to place inside masks for further protection?I dont know how easy it would be to breathe in but it might be good for short grocery store trips..
Surgical masks is not waterproof but water resistance... I've tested medical graded masks from hospital.. for the first minute or so... it's able to hold water... but eventually it will sip thru. The filtering layer (mid) is more water-resistant compare to the first layer, most medical graded mask act alike. The first layer repels water but only short periods, the mid layer resist water on both sides, and that's the layer doing most of the work. If first layer is not heavily moist it is sufficient as first defence, but to hold water on the first layer, it will sip thru some in less than a minute. The mid layer may take up to 5mins before water sips thru forming a bridge between layers to transmit virus to wearer. The last layer absorb water immediately, so it is of no use as a barrier but just for wearer's comfort.
The mid layer is the filter (if it’s a standard 3 ply mask you’re talking about). Both outer and inner layers do not filter any virus. The filtration is done by the mid layer. The outer and innermost layers are both water resistant ruclips.net/video/IeRdFjc_TZk/видео.html
Genius Asian Yes, it's the 3 Ply medical surgical masks. First layer (blue, water-repel but not quite resistance enough), mid layer (filtration & water-resistance on both sides of the ply), lastly 3rd layer (comfort layer). There's several medical grades, so I'm only talking about those typically use by nurses or those given to visitors at hospitals. It's terrible to see retailers maybe selling non-standard ones. U really need to cut it open to test what's nonsense and what's acceptable.

it is possible when you have multiple layers, you have better filtering, may be better than 95%. However you may have larger gap on the side because surgical masks are not designed to seal tight. Thank you for taking the time to contribute to the topic.

From our description, I am not sure which one she thinks is the filter layer. There are three layers: 1. outside, colored layer, this is fluid-repelling layer 2. middle layer filters bacteria 3. inner layer is to absorb moisture Can you explain what is her reason to wear the inner layer outside?

Let it cool, and voila a good homemade COVID 19 mask. It’s not pretty, but it works. With a little supervision, older kids can do this. I came up with this at 2 am yesterday. Please pass it on.
I saw a video where they were making masks out of HEPA filters for air filtration devices (I have 3 HEPA air filters in my apartment, every room) Can that be done? Would it work?
HEPA is defined as removing at least 99.97% of airborne particles 0.3 micrometers, so it is a good choice. So you need to check three things of your own material: 1. does it filter very small particles? 2. does it prevent droplets from seeping through? 3. does it release any harmful chemical to your lung? By definition, your HEPA filter passed #1, you just need to check #2 and #3
@@kwillow12 If you have to wear the disposable masks everyday, then it could be more expensive when you have to change a new one daily since the sum of the cost of all the disposable masks will add up. So I bought a respirator like this one: ruclips.net/video/Wg-cwD4Edac/видео.html The refill filter is sold separately. The filter is not cheap but cheaper than the respirator itself. So I clean and re-use respirator, and use the HEPA filter material to replace the filter on the respirator, so overall is cheaper. But I agree with you that it does look kind of silly.

AND the US gov't is saying "masks don't work" while saying the medical personnel need masks.
@@kwillow12 Since the coronavirus started in China two months earlier than US, a lot of Chinese who live in US bought masks and shipped to their home for their friends and relatives. yes, hand washing is the most effective way. The coronavirus has three paths: 1. your mouth; 2. your nose; 3. your eyes. Hand washing can reduce all three of the paths. However if coronavirus spreads airborne to your nose directly, then washing hands does not solve this particular problem.

This is similar to the question of disposable masks (those commercial surgical mask or N95 masks), how long should we wear them? In theory, the "disposable " means just used once and then thrown away.
@@firejuggler31 good question. We should treat anything inside of a mask more careful than outside of the masks, i.e. never touch the inside of a mask with your dirty fingers, so you should throw away the mask if you touched the inside of your mask. @@newyorkguy158 yes, it could be expensive, plus if you require everyone wearing it, it will multiply the cost.

You need to check three things of your own material:

"The filtration efficiency of the modified filter media was first tested on aerosolized T4D viruses (Enterobacteria phage T4, Doermann’s strain T4D). Then the treated filter was inserted inside a commercial medical mask in place of its cellulose layer and the reconstructed mask was challenged with TD4 aerosols to evaluate its virus removal efficiency."
"Both treatments significantly improved the virus capture factor (ratio of upstream to downstream PFU contents) of KW cellulose wipes and of reconstructed commercial masks when compared to original masks and to masks reconstructed with untreated wipes."
Tiliket, Ghania & Ladam, Guy & Nguyen, Trong & Lebrun, Laurent.
This result explains the remarkable improvement of the affinity of medical masks for virus droplets when one of their cellulose layers was changed by two-PEI-functionalized cellulose-based filters."
Polyethylenimine is commercially available.

What about taping around the edge with a single or double side scotch tape?
Across the nose there wasn't much impact on the skin.

would it be safe to spray the face mask with strong liquor before putting it on
An interesting question. There may be at least two consequences:
1. alcohol may kill germs at the time it was applied but then it evaporates.

Homemade masks should ideally be used in combination with a face shield that covers the entire front (that extends to the chin or below) and sides of the face."

It shows that with N95 i can still smell the peppermint oil. But with three surgical masks i can barely smell the oil. Does it mean three surgical masks are stronger and more effective than only one N95 mask?
it is possible when you have multiple layers, you have better filtering, may be better than 95%. However you may have larger gap on the side because surgical masks are not designed to seal tight. Thank you for taking the time to contribute to the topic.
I think you have it backwards a friend of mine’s nurse if you were in surgery and you were using a mask to prevent your patient from being ill the color side would face out that’s the filter however if you’re trying to prevent viruses from coming into your mouth you need to flip it around so that your filter is on the outside she said oh for 80% of the people that she seen are wearing them wrong

2. middle layer filters bacteria
3. inner layer is to absorb moisture

How long would you use one of these DIY masks before replacing? One hour? One day? One week? Thanks in advance.
This is similar to the question of disposable masks (those commercial surgical mask or N95 masks), how long should we wear them? In theory, the "disposable " means just used once and then thrown away.
Do I also have to throw the rubber bands away? Or just the napkins?
@@firejuggler31 good question. We should treat anything inside of a mask more careful than outside of the masks, i.e. never touch the inside of a mask with your dirty fingers, so you should throw away the mask if you touched the inside of your mask. But if you touched the outside of your masks, it may still be OK. Now the rubber bands in the outside of your mask, but it is closer to your face, so you may treat similar either to your hat or the mask itself.
@@GeniusAsian At $10/mask, that's $300/month and if you are moving about all day in a densely populated area like nyc, you may need 2 masks/day. How many people can even afford one mask/day?
@@newyorkguy158 yes, it could be expensive, plus if you require everyone wearing it, it will multiply the cost. In theory, you only need one barrier to block the virus between the sick person and the healthy person. It makes sense to require the sick person to wear because there are many fewer sick people. However if you don't trust the sick people to wear masks, then you want to wear one, so you don't have to worry about it.
my question is can you wash a surgical mask if you have one to keep using it and also put a paper towel inside of it for more protection 🤔
instead of washing, you can put the mask under the sun and use ultraviolet light to kill the viruses. You can put a something in the mask, however it should not create gaps on the side because the gaps around the mask will be 0% filtered.
Genius Asian thanks for the helpful tip I did not know that about the sun light

Can you use a hankerchief, like in the old West?
You need to check the size of the holes because you need to check three things of your own material:
1. does it filter very small particles?
2. does it prevent droplets from seeping through?
3. does it release any harmful chemical to your lung?

I like this wire idea exposed or not👍
Brave man! certainly comparing those people in China who dare to wear bottles as face shield, it's not that outrageous.
So what’s the best material to use?
It depends on what you have. HEPA filter material at least can filter out very small particles.

Is it okay if it has a gap on the sides?
By definition, the fit test for a N95 would fail if it has a gap on the sides.
Great video. Now I want to see some origami designs :)

I wonder if water repellent spray would help?
A very good question. When we have this kind of question, we need to check three things of our own material:
1. does it filter very small particles?
2. does it prevent droplets from seeping through?
3. does it release any harmful chemical to your lung?
To apply your "water repellent spray," what is the chemical compound in the spray and does it release any harmful chemical to your lung?
@@GeniusAsian I would say, once it is completely dry that it would be fine. Especially since it would be applied to the outside. I'm sure there are low odor one's out there somewhere.

Ultimately if you don't have a mask, you can improve on your immune system to take care of the job for you.
That problem for coronavirus is that your immune system could be too strong, not attacking the lungs' healthy tissues but also your liver and kidney. We want a good immune system, that is selective only attack the virus.
By doing what??? Explain.

Vacuum cleaner bags as a mask material. A lot of them have a micron filter for people with allergies

@@GeniusAsian did you already think about using one of the plastic bottle diy gasmask designs on yt as a basis for a fullface corona mask? instead of activated charcoal you need a filter of course.
@@martinerhard5857 hmmm, good question. There are different problems in USA:
1. For the full face one, the bottle has to be large, you know the coke bottle is too small. In China, nobody drinks tap water, so there are many people having the large bottles. In US, only some businesses have the large bottled water delivered.
2. in US, some people even embarrassed to wear a regular mask in public, let alone a strange one.
3. If you can't seal the full-face-bottle tight, then having a clear plastic sheet over your head is just as good.
@@GeniusAsian 1. Its not a problem to buy 2l bottles. 2L coke bottles work just fine.
2. true...its so dumb
3. Honestly i built one myself and while its not 100% airtight its a lot better compared to every N95 / FFP2 mask i ever used. Some guys used the design and it was tight enough to endure a room full of teargas...the vid is on yt
@@martinerhard5857 yes, a 2-liter bottle can cover your mouth and nose. When you said "fullface", did you mean to cover the head as well?
