I work in an escape room haha. For those of you who get frustrated about the red herrings, the thing is, they might not actually be red herrings. We are trained to make you escape the room so that you are proud of your achievement so sometimes when players take too long to solve some enigmas, we unblock others so that you move along to the end faster so that you are able to finish on time. In the escape room I work at, the rooms are designed not to have any red herrings but if players are not going fast enough, we can skip steps in the game so that they get the satisfaction of having escaped :)
I think red herrings are often unintentional and in the mind of the player. I've done about 20 rooms, and I've often found myself stuck on a prop that had nothing to do with the puzzle. That said, the prop clearly wasn't designed to be part of the puzzle, so I just read too much into things.
The one i work at, we dont let every group escape because we keep true to our escape rates. But our rules for us GM's is to get them 50% through the game and if there is some free time after their game has ended, we give them 15-30 extra minutes to try to escape the room. If they dont, we help explain things for them.
I went to an escape room. Found a key and it broke inside the lock. I sat there for 10 minutes before the staff came in and asked me why I wasn't doing anything. They had to get a lock cutter for me to get through to the next part. It was fun
As someone who works at an escape room, I can confirm that all of these tips are valid and EXTREMELY helpful! I already tell customers some of these, but I'll definitely be telling them the rest now! Another tip I use is to not be afraid to ask for hints. At my job, we give unlimited, so people are usually more willing to ask for help. But even if you're limited and you're really stuck, some times one clue is all you need to continue the room.
@@cccooper472 it depends on the room. Most of the ones I've done were with 4 or 5 people and it was perfect, but I know about one were you need to have between 8 and 10 participants (that is way less common). Also, in all of the ones I've been to you only see the person working there at the beginning to explain the story and at the end when you escape and they offer you a picture

As an escape room enthusiast, I can say that most of these tips will keep you in the room forever. They are only suitable for very basic rooms for beginners. In normal escape rooms, the puzzles can be much more difficult. Keys, codes, passwords, hints can be found in lamps, in sockets, and in the most unpleasant places. Sometimes locks need to be picked using master keys found.

Yes! I was the only person who had ever done an escape room in my group of 6 last week. They were all obsessed with going suuuuuper deep doing math and periodic table things (it was biohazard theme). I had to keep telling them they would never make puzzles that hard requiring writing out math or remberjng a 20 digit code 😂
1. Think simple, a well designed escape room won’t be that complicated 2. Search once you enter the room, but search carefully so you don’t mess things up 3. Organize your stuff, make sure you aren’t redoing clues 4. Focus on stops, you can do this, don’t think otherwise (work backwards and pull back your thinking) 5. Team roles, project manager, and certain people for certain clues 6. Lock types, know which lock is which and which codes they need 7. Code types, make sure you know short and long lines are braille 8. Written clues, look for abnormal patterns in writing 9. Look for patterns, this literally explains itself 10. Your guide is your friend, listen to instructions so you don’t royally mess something up
I went to an escape room where they went through the rules, one of which was “don’t anything in holes in the wall and don’t pull anything out” One of the puzzles literally involved putting your hand in a hole in the wall and pulling out a wooden plank, which we were stuck on for like 15 mins because we were told not to.
i hate this! this happened to me on my first escape room that i ever did and the first thing we had to try and solve was literally a lock behind the book shelf when we were specifically told to "not mess up the place badly and move any objects out of their original place unless its an actual clue". we were stuck on it for 15 minutes and we were all newbies to this but i was the railing compartment thingy for sliding doors connected to the book shelf but nobody allowed me to move it in fear from the instructions but once we call in for a clue, the staff went "have you seen the book shelf?" so annoying!
That is the clue. It's just one of the ways to give it to players without saying it out directly (well, they did tell you the clue outright, just worded it as if it's forbidden). They are watching you anyway so if you are doing somethings that you're not suppose to do or will mess up their system, they will tell you.
@@neyrrad277 that's just a poor excuse. Dont give "rules" that are meant to be clues and expect people to not just break more rules because you just told them that the rest of the rules are possible clues
@@ace-kz9id Maybe, but we don't know how the clue was given (I meant when in the induction, and in what tone did the keeper deliver them). If it's mixed in the middle of all other real rules, I'd say I agree with you and that's the stupidest clue ever. But if it's given at the very end just before the game started, and was quite out-of-the-blue, then it should ring the bell as it might not be what it seems.
A tip for finding things an “average” person would know instead of going down rabbit holes: If the knowledge you have had to do with your profession, or is something that only certain groups of people would know, then it’s probably not the answer.
That makes sense, I did one that had to do with coding ( it was for business retreats) and I was like this doesn't seem like a thing, but all the coding people we're excited because it was. So if it's not for coding, it's probably not.
Exactly. I was in a escape room the other day and there was a rubix cube with numbers on certain boxes, when solved it revealed nothing even when put in color order or other kinds of combinations, while other puzzles that could be solved with no experience and with only clues and information found did eventually became a code that had to be translated into numbers which opened a briefcase.
This is usually true. The only exceptions I've found are when you could solve a puzzle without the knowledge, but special knowledge might get you there faster. For example, I went into an Egypt themed room where one of the puzzles was based on the heart weighing ceremony. Not common knowledge, but it helped me know which two things to put on the scales.
My wife and I did an escape room for our anniversary. I showed her this video before we went in. All these tips came in handy and we escaped with 2 seconds to spare. The room even had a few red herrings. Huge fan of all your videos. Keep up the great work 👍
When I did one, they had a clock on the wall that was stopped at 6:10, we later found a watch in a safe, also stopped at that exact time.. we had no idea what it meant and it turns out it didn't mean anything. soo annoying lol
I don't think you are telling the truth. You can't have a phone in a escape room it says that. Maybe you are being grounded and you locked in your room.
4:09 🔐 Hey, I work at an Escape Room and I have to say, it’s actually kinda frustrating when people put all the locks in a pile, because when we have to reset the room we now have to match the locks with where they go. If some locks look similar we have to pray that they didn’t scramble the lock afterwards otherwise it’s really easy to mix them up and put the wrong lock somewhere. Grouping other items you’ve used is fine but with locks you’re better off just leaving the lock in the hasp after you unlatch it.
thats what i just experienced. the person was continuing to say. “youll only use each clue once” it wasnt for their sake it was for my peace of mind knowing a clue or lock didnt pop up out of nowhere!
A tip I found very important (loosely related to tip 10) - if you suspect something's broken, make sure to ask the guide. For example, if a flashlight gives very little light don't assume that's part of the challenge and instead ask if it's right and if they could replace the batteries. As Mark said, the point is for you to enjoy, so if there's a problem like that - don't hesitate to ask!
Speed My first room had some problems, but we all were new, so we just went with it. That's where the flashlight example is from - we couldn't see anything and the guide had to tell us where to look, we then threw our glowsticks (which were there only so you can find the flashlight and batteries) there thinking it's supposed to be like that. Wasted our time there.
The first room I ever did had this problem. There was a blacklight we found and the batteries were on their last leg , giving us next to no power with it. Since it was our first time, we didn't think to ask about it. Slowed us down substantially.
Also, two of the people were veterans with escape rooms so I don't think I really did much. In essence, it was a bad match of people for me with a poorly designed room.
I am a guide for an escape room company and at the beginning I always say to the people, that they can talk with me all the time, if they are not sure if they are allowed to do something. Sometimes a keypad gets stuck, most of them are not intended to open and close 200 times a day, so we have to replace them quite often and usually a group finds a malfunction before we do 😅
I was doing an escape room and we were trying to find the key for something but then after 20 mins we realised that my dad was holding the key the whole time i was so mad lol 😂
One time we were in the Escape Room and we needed to unlock a door through some sort of codes using colours. Someone (could be even me) closed that door after making that code correctly and we were stuck in the first room for....30 minutes?
The keep it simple one is true af. I did an escape room and a newspaper had a phrase on it that said “A murder in the hills! Neighbors say they heard TWO shots in the dead of night!” At this point I had a toy revolver and I was like “Surely it can’t be that simple” I pulled the trigger twice on the revolver and the coffin sitting in the corner of the room with a lock on it swung wide open to reveal a skeleton and three more clues lol.
Hi! I'm interviewing for a job as a Guide, having never done an Escape Room myself. Training is provided, of course, but we are given immediate raises based on how quickly we learn the rooms. This is an awesome guide, thank you!! I feel much more prepared going in.
3:17 actually one time I went to an escape room the staff were explaining the rules and said a rule which was "the pinky rule" if you could move something with your pinky it was a clue and they mentioned that one time people disassembled the air conditioner thinking it was a clue.
I just wanted to say, if you have any Disabilities, do not be afraid to let the attendant know. There are a few escape rooms I have been to that had a tunnel to crawl through into a second room. In every case ive just let them know and they have let me walk into the second room via the door, once we discovered it.
"No matter what the package says, you'll have a better time at half capacity" but what if the package says that the tent is intended for one person? Sounds painful.
Final solve for an escape room I did was a number lock. To get the number, we had to solve a math equation, which we found by turning off the lights to the room and shining two different laser pointers at specific angles from two different spots in the room, and the various mirrors create the said math equation. Finding the laser pointers, where to put them, what angle to put them at, all required separate series of puzzles on their own.
I was in a room once, that had a home trainer bike in it. Me and my group were convinced something would happen if we would use it, like a light starting to shine or a curtain going up (revealing something). I literally biked for about 15 minutes, but nothing happened. It was just there as a red herring. We did eventually escape the room tho
"dont dissect a lamp searching for a clue" flashbacks to when one of my teammates dissected the radiator resulting in a flooding of the room and the entire room being shut down for weeks YEET
We definitely won, the staff were so ashamed that it had happened so we didn't even have to pay for the room and we got to do any other room for free lmao
@@alexrife2799 Why? What's wrong with that, just don't make any of the ports live. - If you're going to design a proper escape room, everything you don't want anyone to mess with should be indestructible to a hammer etc - Use Rivets etc
I have done a few escape rooms and went to one with a couple friends. They decided to take it easy because there was just one room, surely there can't have that many puzzles, right? Well, as I suggested early on, turns out the bookshelf was hiding a second room. We only had 15 minutes left when it opened
I'm not even sure I've done an escape room without there being multiple rooms in some way. Hidden in a wardrobe, through a second door, and players starting in separate rooms and work into a center one are ones I remember.
@@ARSaVaGE2626 The one I work in doesn't lock the people in at all, but if the people just leave, they obviously wont get what they paied for and they won't get on the leaderboard, because they didn't complete the objective (which can't be done by picking a lock, with the exception of one of our older games).
I’m surprised you didn’t mention what in my opinion is the biggest piece of advice: don’t go opening random things for no reason or pulling random things off shelves. It gets messy and hard to keep track of what you really need to do. Instead start by focusing on things you can easily see around the room. Most of the time the first clue will be written on a wall, or there will be an open book or a newspaper, or a stopped clock, something that can give you an idea of what you’re looking for.
I used to watch Scott Nicholson's board game show back in the day. Certainly did not expect to see him pop up here. He seems like a very knowledgable, kind-hearted and soft-spoken guy. Great to know he's still around and doing what he loves!
I did an escape room one time. It was me and my parents, with some other random families. We failed. Because no one communicated anything. We'd be working on a puzzle for a good while before someone finally told us they solved it. We almost made it, too. But the last puzzle required one person to read instructions to another, on how to unlock a box that had multiple locks that had to be unlocked in a certain order. My dad was trying to give the instructions but the other people kept telling instructions over him, confusing the person trying to unlock the box. Like, guys. Shut up. Only ONE person needs to read the instructions. Let him do it. Needless to say, it was a more frustrating experience than it needed to be. Definitely do an escape room with people you know.
I had the opposit happening to me and my team from work. We were used to work together and escaped the room with the 2nd best time ever recorded. We all had no clue or experience with escape rooms, but worked to gether for almost 4 years. So it brakes down to your group and how well they can work together without "big" emotional outbreaks ;)
being a canadian, I love it when he includes a travel montage to Canada. I loved seeing, gretzky something and time hortons the most Canadian thing ever. Seriously!
1 slight amendment if ur gonna go do an escape room. For #2 when he said start searching immediately, beware, yes do search, but carefully and without messing things up as best as possible. We failed our room because there was a dart board and the first thing someone did was pull out the darts to look at them, and behind the board. Turned out the whole room revolved around knowing which initial positions those darts were in! So we lost! The point is, SEARCH CAREFULLY!
I work in an escape room and I've got to say, that's a very badly designed clue. Never put in a clue that relies on people to look before messing with it. And if you do, always include a way to put it back in the correct order. For instance, we have a radio that turns on to a morse code station, but the radio itself doesn't turn on until you do something else. The FIRST thing people will do with the radio is turn all the knobs. So usually all they get when they actually activate it is incoherent static. We have another clue close by that gives them the correct station to tune back to.
Thanks to these tips, me and my friends were able to do far better than the majority of beginners in their first escape rooms… By finishing 1 minute over the time limit! We’re definitely going to pass the next escape room! Thanks for your advice dude! EDIT: Also, it was just three of us, and the owner was very impressed!
I hated people who dissambled anything especially when i told them not to do so or when there were labels stating not to touch it, those who did that I haven t helped them properly so they would not make it in time
So I've done multiple escape rooms, sometimes getting out sometimes not, but after watching this video and applying the tips we did an escape room on NYE 2023 and did better than we ever have!! I made everyone in our group watch this b/c we were doing a harder escape room than last year (NYE tradition) and we made it out with like a minute last time, this room was rated harder and we got out with 15 minutes to spare only using 1 clue. So further proof these are great tips!
I did an escape room once. It was weird though. I didn't know they put live guards in rooms... The money in the vault was actually real though, and the police chase afterwards was so realistic. They even made it look like my buddy actually got shot! It was awesome
I did one where we were in a plane wreckage and it started off with the plane crashing and you are basically trying to get out of the plane alive and then send for help.
I did a horror escape room. These tips helped so much. Especially organizing the stuff. I was mostly making sure we were only using the items once and kept everything we used in one pile and items we didn't use yet in another pile - both organized. We made it out of the escape room with 13:50 to spare.
I’m commenting this late but I just wanted to say, this was actually very helpful because one time, I went to my friend’s birthday and we did the escape room and when I told them the tips we tried it and we made it in 39 mins!
This advice seemed really obvious to me, right up until I remembered the fact that I've worked at an escape room for two years. Yeah, these are pretty good tips.
I dunno, they seem pretty obvious anyway. There was nothing in this video that I wouldn't expect a normal group to do. Other than designate a team leader, which doesn't sound fun, ruining the point of an escape room: to have fun.
Rodin Gaming they might seem obvious but by design they have to be. They are general tips meant to apply to escape rooms in general, not a specific one or type. What did you expect to find?? And some people have fun out of competitiveness, so if designating a leader makes you faster then some people would have more fun doing that since their source of fun is achieving the fastest time they can. Thanks for listening to my ted talk.
I brute force the last digits of locks regularly in escape rooms, it's usually the smartest choice. I recently was in a room where you had to find numbers by weaving a string among some nails. We got three numbers, so I just forced the last one to move on. Game master later told me we were the first team to try that method. I was frankly surprised.
My boyfriend and I watched this video this morning before we did a 30 minute escape room this afternoon. We made it out with 8 minutes to spare! These tips really helped us divide and conquer
Me and my friends once did an escape room in about 5 seconds. We haven't even started searching, when one of them stood in the open door and shouted "I did it"... One of my friends was from Poland and just picked the lock 😂
This is one of the best list and breakdowns I have ever seen. My wife and I have done >300 rooms around the world (83 countries) and we pretty much use the same rules. You are awesome Mark. Keep up the great content.
I wouldn't say mostly, but math (or visual logic) is a significant portion of it. I've done a few escape rooms in China (they're crazy popular here) without speaking hardly any Chinese, and I'm only useful in about half the puzzles.
I would say that everyone working working on one puzzle can be counter intuitive at times. For example, there may be two different puzzles that have clues scattered around. So if you immediately hone in on one, you may miss clues for the second. In addition, its better to have everyone working on different ones instead of one singular, since then you can come up with solutions for all three in that time instead of one.
I have completed over 20 escape rooms (I’m a little obsessed) Smaller groups are better....I usually don’t do rooms if there are more than 6 people. I usually just do them with one other person. I have only failed 2 rooms....one was with a group of 12 people so communication was horrible. And the other failed room was because they didn’t set the room up correctly. I agree with all the hints especially with organizing the room! People will try to use keys over and over again. Also there are two types of rooms...linear meaning one puzzle opens at a time so it works in a specific order and then non linear so you can solve multiple puzzles at the same time!
In any good escape room there should be a translator in the room, so while it will of course be an advantage to know it you only really need to recognise it, which IMO is basic knowledge.
Another tip: Don't be like the boys I was grouped with on a middle school field trip to an escape room. If you get a sword, don't derail the entire rest of the group by attacking them with it for the final 20 minutes of the allotted time :/
I went to an escape room that looked like a prison, and I was so convinced that behind the toilet there was a secret room so I spent 20 minutes unscrewing the screws using my hands. Eventually it worked, and after we escaped we realised we skipped the actual puzzle to open the secret door. Long story short, if brain power doesn’t work, use brawn 😂💪🏼
Holy smokes, this video was accurate. I've done a few escape rooms before with blah results. But this time, our group studied this video and crushed our difficult room - 2nd-fastest time on record this year! We felt so darn pleased with ourselves :)
one time i was doing an escape room and i was messing around with a lock and i cracked the code by just playing with it and the person said that we weren't supposed to find that yet
Oh, just yesterday, we just took on a "Difficult" room that was intended for 4-8 players...using a lot of these techniques. Just me and my wife. It was a BLAST. Thanks for the insights Mark!
The number of puzzles for 4-8 players will be reduced to 2 players if you're only having 2 players at my country. Unless you told the gamemaster you'd prefer it to be so.
I've done a fair bit of escape rooms and some of them back these up while others disprove these For instance, most escape rooms I've done have had a discard draw for used keys and locks, both to further enforce you don't need them anymore and so that the people who reset the room have all the pieces in a convenient location Other rooms I've done though have had pretty obtuse solutions. One involved knowledge of Cthulhu and how to pronounce the words they offer, one involved requiring knowledge of paintings, and one involved having to do long addition Oh and one required looking under a mannquins skirt. That's really neither here nor there but I thought it was funny
At the one that I work at we have some dolls and an employee wrote "pervert" under all their skirts (before I worked there), yeah he quit shortly after and the manager didn't find it until after he quit. I had to rub it off with my coworker lol
EbonyUmbreon same! We were the only group to escape in the 8 rooms! We couldn’t turn the key in the door and we had 23 seconds to spare. We escaped with 8 seconds to spare! Soooo stressful!
I actually read a Reddit post about someone doing an Escape Room where the guide said "you don't need to take anything apart to find any clues." ...And then they failed because one of the clues required them to open up (ie, take apart) a flashlight in the room.
Yeah, the first escape room I did they said "don't mess around with stuff, it should be obvious if it doesn't come apart easily it's not supposed to." Also "one of our guests once spent ages digging a brick out of a wall - you can still see it, just don't go and do stuff like that". The FIRST thing in the room was a solid looking wooden block that needed to be taken apart... Later on we literally had to take a brick out of a wall to get a key... *facepalm*.
"Don't look anywhere where it isn't logical to search" Me, in a prisonstyle escape room: Looks in the toilet, and in the back of it to find an important book.
A friend and I did a cool Escape Room which was 3 separate rooms and Sci-Fi themed. One of the clues involved a star chart, the other was arranging weapons a certain way on a weapons rack and so fourth. You had time limit to get to the final room which was set up like a bridge of a space ship and you had stop it ship from crashing into a planet.

My family lost an escape room yesterday because we got stuck on a combination lock that the answer to a riddle was the lock code and even clues weren't helping us. Turns out we technically had the correct answer the very first time to the riddle but where we are from a different spelling of the word is used. So we lost all that time trying to figure out that code.

I mean in the one I work at I tell every group not to force anything open; if it needs to open, there is a method that isn't brute force, you just need to find it. Also any escape room that doesn't explicitly say "DON'T BREAK ANYTHING" is doing it wrong haha.

Guiness world record prepare to break
1. Think simple, a well designed escape room won’t be that complicated
2. Search once you enter the room, but search carefully so you don’t mess things up
3. Organize your stuff, make sure you aren’t redoing clues
4. Focus on stops, you can do this, don’t think otherwise (work backwards and pull back your thinking)
5. Team roles, project manager, and certain people for certain clues
6. Lock types, know which lock is which and which codes they need
7. Code types, make sure you know short and long lines are braille
8. Written clues, look for abnormal patterns in writing
9. Look for patterns, this literally explains itself
10. Your guide is your friend, listen to instructions so you don’t royally mess something up
Thanks for saving me 10 minutes

@@ll77l BRUH you missed a bunch of details
I went to an escape room where they went through the rules, one of which was “don’t anything in holes in the wall and don’t pull anything out”
One of the puzzles literally involved putting your hand in a hole in the wall and pulling out a wooden plank, which we were stuck on for like 15 mins because we were told not to.
i hate this! this happened to me on my first escape room that i ever did and the first thing we had to try and solve was literally a lock behind the book shelf when we were specifically told to "not mess up the place badly and move any objects out of their original place unless its an actual clue". we were stuck on it for 15 minutes and we were all newbies to this but i was the railing compartment thingy for sliding doors connected to the book shelf but nobody allowed me to move it in fear from the instructions but once we call in for a clue, the staff went "have you seen the book shelf?" so annoying!

Don’t send people to escape rooms then, it’s a tedious task for a corporate group to deal with. And I want to win!
thats what i just experienced. the person was continuing to say.
Yeah, the only escape room I ever did was messed up to start with. Kinda annoyed.
Escape rooms can get people in fights. Believe me
One time we were in the Escape Room and we needed to unlock a door through some sort of codes using colours. Someone (could be even me) closed that door after making that code correctly and we were stuck in the first room for....30 minutes?

@RobinGillmore It happens all the time. Communication is the most important 'key' for escaping.

Yeah that's a poorly designed room if you can destroy the clues.
They should make it so that the darts are glued to the board
Bad design
Sounds like that wouldn't be a fun room even for experts. If the primary clue was that poorly done, I can only imagine how bad the rest of it was.

Mars Rover Team.. Mark Rober Team...
I wouldn't say mostly, but math (or visual logic) is a significant portion of it. I've done a few escape rooms in China (they're crazy popular here) without speaking hardly any Chinese, and I'm only useful in about half the puzzles.
"Work the problem!"
I have completed over 20 escape rooms (I’m a little obsessed)
Smaller groups are better....I usually don’t do rooms if there are more than 6 people.

Is a rubric cube that dissolves when you solve it and it gives you a key to a door because your cousin trapped you in the basement?
Yep
I know right now do you even find escape rooms?
Sameee
I went to an escape room that looked like a prison, and I was so convinced that behind the toilet there was a secret room so I spent 20 minutes unscrewing the screws using my hands. Eventually it worked, and after we escaped we realised we skipped the actual puzzle to open the secret door. Long story short, if brain power doesn’t work, use brawn 😂💪🏼
JESUS! Did you just HAPPEN to have a screwdriver with you?!?
Edit: Oh, you used your bare hands. Somehow, that's 10 times worse.
Zahra Onsori I went to a prison that looked like an escape room because I brought 2 glocks to the room and told the guide to tell me. He’s dead now
Zahra Onsori bruh
Why would they make it that hard?? 🤦🏻♀️😂
Holy smokes, this video was accurate. I've done a few escape rooms before with blah results. But this time, our group studied this video and crushed our difficult room - 2nd-fastest time on record this year! We felt so darn pleased with ourselves :)

I've done a fair bit of escape rooms and some of them back these up while others disprove these
For instance, most escape rooms I've done have had a discard draw for used keys and locks, both to further enforce you don't need them anymore and so that the people who reset the room have all the pieces in a convenient location
Other rooms I've done though have had pretty obtuse solutions. One involved knowledge of Cthulhu and how to pronounce the words they offer, one involved requiring knowledge of paintings, and one involved having to do long addition
Oh and one required looking under a mannquins skirt. That's really neither here nor there but I thought it was funny
At the one that I work at we have some dolls and an employee wrote "pervert" under all their skirts (before I worked there), yeah he quit shortly after and the manager didn't find it until after he quit. I had to rub it off with my coworker lol
My family did an escape room and won with 40 seconds to spare. The lady said it was the most intense one she’s seen in her time at that job.
EbonyUmbreon same! We were the only group to escape in the 8 rooms! We couldn’t turn the key in the door and we had 23 seconds to spare. We escaped with 8 seconds to spare! Soooo stressful!

*Remembers me disassembling an innocent table lamp*
I actually read a Reddit post about someone doing an Escape Room where the guide said "you don't need to take anything apart to find any clues."
...And then they failed because one of the clues required them to open up (ie, take apart) a flashlight in the room.
I took apart an innocent lamp too! My friends and I still laugh about that lol.
Yeah, the first escape room I did they said "don't mess around with stuff, it should be obvious if it doesn't come apart easily it's not supposed to."
Also "one of our guests once spent ages digging a brick out of a wall - you can still see it, just don't go and do stuff like that".
The FIRST thing in the room was a solid looking wooden block that needed to be taken apart...
Later on we literally had to take a brick out of a wall to get a key... *facepalm*.
That lamp had a family ...... ( T T )

"Don't look anywhere where it isn't logical to search"
Me, in a prisonstyle escape room:
Looks in the toilet, and in the back of it to find an important book.
It's logical to search there. Just not for a book
I know which escape room you're talking about!
Prisonstyle makes it logical, imo

Lol wouldn't the book be wet? Or are you talking opening the tank and finding a book inside?
A friend and I did a cool Escape Room which was 3 separate rooms and Sci-Fi themed.
One of the clues involved a star chart, the other was arranging weapons a certain way on a weapons rack and so fourth. You had time limit to get to the final room which was set up like a bridge of a space ship and you had stop it ship from crashing into a planet.
“Hello everyone, this is the LockPickingLawyer”

One time we went to an escape room with my sister when she was 7 and she brought in her stuffed cow with doll clothes on. We didn't know she had a magnet in between the cow and the clothes. She was dragging the cow across the walls and the wall opened up leading to another room. She didn't plan that or anything, it was completely random that she had a magnet with her. 😂😂😂

The only escape room I've done banned me... It's not like the rules said anything about kicking the door open. What kind of cheapo cell door can't take a single sparta kick?
I mean in the one I work at I tell every group not to force anything open; if it needs to open, there is a method that isn't brute force, you just need to find it. Also any escape room that doesn't explicitly say "DON'T BREAK ANYTHING" is doing it wrong haha.

I've worked at an escape room for 4 years now and I say all these tips for my groups and we even go further to simplify and prevent distractions by labeling decorations with a sticker but it doesn't matter cause 90% of the time they don't listen to you.
But I don't mind, I was awful at escape rooms before I started helping make them.

Thanks for these tips Mark. It is really important to take a set back from a puzzle sometimes and have someone else look at it especially if you are over complicating things. Yesterday I escaped operation casino at breakout games with just 32 seconds to spare. So fun!
