Some ways to defeat - or at least impede - the app and the other teams bench which are in fact pretty common at higher levels of baseball: 1) hidden inputs. The app assumes that the signs from the third base coach are the only inputs. An easy way to to confound that is to use other non-obvioius inputs. Commons ones include the number of outs, balls, strikes (watch for players checking the score board before getting the sign), the uniform number of the player, or the posture of a player in the dugout (often yesterdays starting pitcher ). These all typically change the indicator. "If Jim has his arms folded indicator is the left arm, if he is holding his hat it's the belt, with two strikes indicator is the left knee" This makes it harder to steal signs because you don't know the range of inputs to give to the AI. 2) Use a system that counting rather than location. Eg. after the indicator count the additional signs 1 = steal, 2 = hit and run, 3 = bunt, 0 = take. More advanced systems will have add and subtract signs eg "After the indicator any sign above the letters is +1 below the letter is -1." 3) have and use a wipe out sign. This is a sign that means ignore everything. (Lovingly know as the "Just hit the ball son" sign.) Ideally this should be used about 1/3 sets. The AI will get this pretty fast, but it protects the indicator from casual observation. In the late innings of a close game go with a no-indicator system (actual practice says the first sign is always dead because it is often missed. Many coaches always start with the same sign as a way of getting everyone's attention) In late innings the coach is more likely to repeatedly put on plays and this keeps the indicated from getting burnt out.
This. For those wondering a common one on the first point is "ABE", or "Ahead, Behind, Even." If the batter is ahead in the count, it's the first sign, if he's behind, it's the second, if the count is even, it's the third. An AI could potentially pick up on that but the order can easily be changed each inning and it would take a lot of data for the AI to catch one. Also if a team has any suspicion that their signs are being picked they will instantly change to a more complex system if their coach is worth any weight. This app is cool but honestly not that useful.
Id like to see it in highschool or college level to see what it did. Even in highschool we were using indicators (skin on skin) to know when signaling was 'real' and when it was just motions. In college it got even more complicated. It's a lot more involved than a sequence.
Yvng Future once you start your motion in baseball you cannot stop otherwise it is a balk. If there is a balk all runners advance one base. But I don’t think the rule applies in softball
Yvng Future when a righty lifts their leg up to begin their motion, they cannot stop, or else the batter gets a free base. With a lefty, they can stop their motion after lifting their leg UP, of they lift it across their body, it’s the same as the righty.
Fun fact, I never knew my coaches signs cause I just forgot them. So even if the other team knew our signs it didnt matter cause I sure didnt

More advanced systems will have add and subtract signs eg "After the indicator any sign above the letters is +1 below the letter is -1."
3) have and use a wipe out sign.
Best comment. #1 was particularly interesting.
Nice!

Could have used it agenst a mlb team
Id like to see it in highschool or college level to see what it did. Even in highschool we were using indicators (skin on skin) to know when signaling was 'real' and when it was just motions. In college it got even more complicated. It's a lot more involved than a sequence.

3:18 That is the hardest balk I’ve ever seen
What's a balk
Yvng Future once you start your motion in baseball you cannot stop otherwise it is a balk. If there is a balk all runners advance one base. But I don’t think the rule applies in softball
Yvng Future when a righty lifts their leg up to begin their motion, they cannot stop, or else the batter gets a free base. With a lefty, they can stop their motion after lifting their leg UP, of they lift it across their body, it’s the same as the righty.
Lol
