I like the alternate way to play guesswho where you have to ask abstract questions like "does your person look like they would enjoy tapas as a first date" - it's a genuinely funny way to play with friends.

"It's a random process but you do know the group will always look like that" - the teacher says this with such fresh and genuine fascination even though he's taught that perhaps tens of thousands of times. His unwaning passion for the subject he teaches is indeed super contagious, just like the one who made this video.

You must've been a nightmare student for most of your teachers! There's nothing more humbling than a student who is WAY smarter than you are. Unfortunately my son went through a school system that didn't believe in separating out gifted students. Consequently, he fell through the cracks because he was smarter than most of his teachers, wasn't challenged enough and lost interest in school. The public school system robs us of so many gifted students because they're more worried about stepping on toes. What a loss. So happy you made it through and I hope you work on making public schools a more nurturing atmosphere for those types of students. Thank you for all you do!

Wouldn’t it be inaccurate to use a bell curve to represent your strategy since it always guarantees a win within five or six guesses exclusively when done properly? In that case, the distribution between number of guesses to win wouldn’t resemble a normal curve, but instead be a single split probability between two outcomes.

    • @Septimus_ii
      @Septimus_ii Год назад +1

"Each question must have a 'yes' or a 'no' answer". The combination of test conditions with an OR parameter linking them will ultimately always result in a final yes or a no. The way the rule is written suggests that the final answer being singular is all that matters, and that it doesn't matter if you combine a series of tests in the question to get to that answer.
    Yes, Yes = Yes
    Yes, No = Yes
    No, No = No
    No, Yes = Yes
    ...

@@petermuller608 in my experience with programming logical functions, that's the definition of "or" when carrying out a series of tests.
If A, or B, or C, then PASS, means only one test needs to pass in order to proceed.
If A, and B, and C, then PASS, means ALL tests need to pass...
Rober is saying that the evaluation of A, B, C is one question with one answer rather than three questions,.

this is basically a very similar concept to database indexing. when you are searching a database for something, its much faster to find it if you can order all potential answers, and then the computer tries to figure out if its above or below a random guess. It requires less amount of checks to do it this way than to sequentially check each individual row if its accurate or not.

This strategy is basically the principle of binary search and is applicable for lots of problems. You want to repeatedly pick guess that narrow the pack into half. For instance, you can guess any English letter someone thinks of in 6 guesses or less using this strategy. First guess you ask if the letter is earlier than or equal to the 13th character. Regardless of the choice you pick the midpoint in the half they give you. This will result in the following state of how many choices before the guess:
    0: 26
    1: 13
    2: 7
    3: 4
    4: 2
    5: 1
    6: 0
The general formula is that for anything that can be sorted or divided like in the video, you can narrow down the answer to 1 choice in N + 1 guesses where 2^N is greater than or equal to the total number of possible choices.
For Guess Who there are 24 possible choices. As explained in the video the nearest power of 2 greater than or equal to 24 is 32 which means N is 5 and 5 + 1 = 6 as the maximum number of choices necessary to guess the correct choice.

Similarly if there are 3 answers to the question, then the best question is whose probability is 33% for all the 3 answers. These questions extract more information than any other ones.

You can also leave with does your person have facial hair other than eyebrows and eyelashes because if they say yes then you know that one it isn't a girl and two you get rid of all of the guys who don't have facial hair. :D

@@leighxx634 If you do that, you try to "improve" the efficiency, but you risk that if the answer is "NO", you almost lose a turn : because you'll have to eliminate all bearded men and similar, but you'll have to keep all females + the men with no bear/facial hairs, wich is worse than having eliminated half of the population with a male/female question.

When my son was 4 I think he came up with the best strategy. He memorized the boards, and I even had both set up different. Then he noticed usually the person he was playing would put their person down on their board right away, or with the first group they put down. He would figure it out almost every time after one question.

This is where you throw them off by randomly asking questions that sometimes are linked to your person but other times aren't ruining the strategy of "they'll ask questions linked to their card".
