How can you say Richard Harris is not a singer? This is a craft a master singer, the voice, the feeling, the heart. Dare any of the contemporary stars to sing with such passion and excellence!
It's truly refreshing to see that people ARE recognising Harris for the actor/singer that he was. You really only have to listen to his album "Slides" to appreciate his true quality
Some are good actors with no talent to sing. Some are singers with no talent to act. And some are the chosen ones with many talents to share with us. And whatever these people do - they do it from thier heart!
All his albums are magnificent. More than just a voice, he is all feelings. I love all his albums, specially his two productions with Jimmy Webb: McArthurs Park and The Yard Went On Forever. Exquisite.
I've always loved that voice. And I think it was Jimmy Webb (correct me if I'm wrong!) who said that he loved the way Mr Harris made his way up or down to a note, rather then just hit it (after all most of us can probably do the latter!). As you imply Phil, STACKS of passion - love it.
The more one experiences life the more that same soul feels words like these. Well done Richard. You seem to feel the words you sing as one who's lived long and deep enough to be an acquaintance to them, closely. Those of us who've been around the block a few times recognize this.
Why when a song that Elvis recorded do Elvis fans (and i'm a huge Elvis fan and a ETA) always have to knock the other version i've never heard this before and its fantastic! Richard Harris sure had an amazing way of putting over a song with true emotion. Great actor and a dam fine singer too
He sang it beautifully..... I felt the emotion and the passion........ans they say he can't sing when he belted McArthur's Oark.... my hats off for this record. Thanks for the upload sir Phil.
Still love you still miss you but your voice will never be silenced. I picture you and dad having your sing along together when just hanging out even still.
Thank you - I agree! I loved the man's career from the movie Camelot onwards and have great memories of seeing him re-create the role on stage in London. My big regret is that I never got to work with him, though I did meet him at The Savoy once and we chatted for a couple of hours. A true great.
wonderful voice,i recall meeting richard harris in the berkley court, where his father in law worked, the nice jack donnelly. jack introduced me to richard, and we had a lovely conversation, then i said i knew his brother,he asked which one ,and for the life of me i could not remember,he just laughed. regards Tony sadar
@vanesselen Translation: What wonderful is the technology. I "discovered" to Richard Harris to ends of ´ 90, when I saw for accident The Field in the television. Without these records he could never have seen a video of his as singer! He was an artist full of talent and passion.
Thank you, it was exactly this version I was looking for. I heard it many years ago and the other day I came to think of the intensity which which it was delivered. I had forgotten who presented it with so much understanding. Richard Harris, of course, thank you again. I enjoyed it.
your comment popped up in my e-mail this morning so i am listening to this BEAUTIFUL rendition of My Boy....off to see the monks in White Salmon....great to wake to this song, thank you! Big Metta!
That sounds beautiful! I just looked them up at hermitage.abhayagiri.org/Support/meal-dana as I knew nothing about them. Have you heard the whole "My Boy" album? It tells a heartbreaking story of the start of a relationship through to its eventual demise.
@BaronVonPenguin Many thanks for thank info, i had only heard the Elvis version up till approx a week ago, i've loved Elvis's version since it's 1974 release.
joder hostia no tenia ni idea de que Richard Harris cantara!!! uffffffffff lo que me faltaba por ver, con lo buenisimo que esta, a mi este hombre me canta y me acaba de rematar MADRE MIAAAAA!!!!!
I prefer this version. Harris had the ability not only to sing these songs, but live it. Same with Watermark. Garfunkels Version is lovely, but Harris has the feelings.
Elvis did do a great job of this song, but having heard it sung all weekend at an Elvis convention; I truly believe Richard Harris put more soul and sincerety into the melody and words.
Je ne connaissais pas le talent de chanteur de Richard Harris et c'est dommage. Je le découvre au hasard de l'émission radio de Marc Danval, "La troisième Oreille". Quelle émotion !
Aside from Elvis this is the second best version of the song I've ever heard. Thanks for the post. Richard was never the best singer in the world but he outdid himself on this one. Rolland B. Heiss
Yes, I think this was the first song I heard on famous Radio Luxembourg [those who lived in Central & East Europe in the 1970s and 1980s know what I mean :)] and I memorised the words being unable to understand any of them. That must have been the first mile stone in my life = I decided that English language would be my only true love. :)
My Boy" is the title of a popular song from the early 1970s. The music was composed by Jean-Pierre Bourtayre and Claude François, and the lyrics were translated from the original version "Parce que je t'aime, mon enfant" (Because I Love You My Child) into English by Phil Coulter and Bill Martin.
@fab70smusic Elvis loved this version believe it or not. He recorded it after hearing Harris singing it.. The original is a French song called "Parce que je t'aime, mon enfant"
Lovely as always, Mr. Harris. Now that I'm a fan of Mad Men, I can't help but think about Jared when I hear this; I didn't know until recently that he's Richard's son.
Yes Judacia. And Jared is so like his dear Dad in his younger tears - just look at him in "This Sporting Life" and "Camelot." Harris was so under-rated as a singer. There are a lot of examples from his album "Slides" on RUclips - hunt them out and listen to the story they tell.
+Phil Cole Check out 'I, In The Membership of My Days' Jared along with brothers Damian & Jamie perform Richard's poetry playing the part of their Dad as a young boy growing up in Limerick. It's a powerful and moving album
+Paul Welch Thanks Paul - I have an original pristine vinyl copy of the album. My local Co-op record store always got Richard's albums in stock on release date. A treasured item in my collection. As is "The Prophet"
+Phil Cole delighted to hear you have it. I picked up all the albums on vinyl during the 80's and have various other bits & pieces. I must dig out a radio interview (possibly the last one he did) and post it. Richard is in terrific form but he he gets really emotional reciting On The One Day Dead Face of My Father and is reduced to tears. I can't think of any actor whose recording career is as interesting as his.
I've made the same decision and stayed for my boys and she turned them against me, now they see me as a loser...she has manipulated ther minds but I hope deep inside their hearts they understand the huge sacrifice I made to see them happy, though I built their happiness out of my own unhappiness...
@Startreknot, Richard Harris had done a great justice to his own version... though not a top caliber singer and under rated yet he has showed how to become an instant topnotch singer...
Phil, I have not but would love to hear the album. I had an amazing time at the Hermitage with the senior visiting monks Luang Por Passano and Luang Por Sona and last Thursday with the eldest, Luagn Por Sumadho who will be turning 80 and studied under Ajahn Chah. It was a gorgeous day and an AMAZING time. Great that you looked them up :) Google "Pacific Hermitage, White Salmon, WA" and you will see where I was. They live fifteen minutes from me.
Cheryl, that is entirely my point! People argue over who is technically the best singer. It's not about that, it's about the heart behind the delivery. And we all know how Elvis looked after his heart!
I was so entranced by Richard's singing, eyes closed, steeping my senses in all his sincerity and emotion when BAM!! Vid cuts off at 3:06... FUCKING TORTURE!!!!!!
Written by J. Claude François e Jean-Pierre Boutavre. In 1971 this French song of memorable Quality was written for Richard Harris by Excellent Derry songwriter Phil Coulter and Bill Martin.
Never heard it. I love his voice. They really need to release these on CD or a box set. I have the two Jimmy Webb albums on one CD that came out on Half Moon in 1997. I have 'Trampo' on Dunhill LP too. I must get Slides.
2 stunning albums in one set - www.amazon.co.uk/My-Boy-Slides-Richard-Harris/dp/B000B5KR5M/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1471856192&sr=8-1&keywords=slides+richard+harris
Elvis is my number 2 after The Beatles, I have never heard this version before, & even thought that Elvis's was the original, but I never thought I would say that a song Elvis has done as good as he did this, that there was a version better, but I agree this is better than Elvis, please dont anyone remind me of Elvis's version of "Hey Jude" because I rate that 0.5 out of 10, and Elvis's version of "My Boy " 9 out of ten and this version 10 out of 10
You're sleeping, son, I know But really this can't wait I wanted to explain before it gets too late For your mother and me, love has finally died This is no happy home, but God knows how I've tried Because you're all I have, my boy You are my life, my pride, my joy And if I stay, I stay because of you, my boy I know it's hard to understand Why did we ever stop We're more like strangers now Each acting out a part I have laughed, I have cried I have lost every game Taking all that I can take But I'll stay just the same Because you're all I have, my boy You are my life, my pride, my joy And if I stay, I stay because of you, my boy Sleep on, you haven't heard a word Perhaps it's just as well Why spoil your little dreams Why put you through that hell Life is no fairy tale as one day you will know But now you're just a child I'll stay here and watch you grow Because you're all I have, my boy You are my life, my pride, my joy And if I stay, I stay because of you, my boy (Repeat to fade...)
Elvis gave it a different kind of feeling, but no less intense, Richard once told me, though he hated the fact that the song's composer apparently said Presley had finally given the song a definitive reading. He also hated the arrangement of Presley's song but remembered, fondly the time Elvis, in Las Vagas backstage, asking "Would you mind if I record My Boy?"
Well i have to say this is the very first time i've EVER heard someone other than Elvis sing this this tune.....though sorry i disagree, the Elvis version is far better......But i have to say Harris does a fine job. Many thanks for posting it.
i can't understand why people insist to say Harris was not a singer, as he was not able to sing. Of course he had not a consistent career, but he had a great voice, in fact a huge almost operatic one. He sang in tune, had vibrato, sense of phrasing, great sustain, ornaments....What more is needed to be a singer? Call himself a singer? Who is a singer then? Justin Timberlake? People half talented as him were considered great ones....
Jessy, this song is for you and your boy who's coming home from furlough this holidays... This is Richard harris..He is long dead but the song , his voice lives with the lyrics..
I'm glad to see so many agree - and have removed the insulting comments from those You-tubers who want to make personal insults a feature on this thread.
@Startreknot To Startreknot: you have posted so much Richard Harris material that I have not seen before. Thank you Did you post a trck from Little Tramp a while back ? Heartbreaking. I love Richard Harris. He was a powerful presence. x

A great actor and singer!. I've watched Camelot several times and still will ..

I love this song, and I have his album my boy, he was a very good singer and very under rated, and he will never be forgotten
Stunning performance x
Not only was he one of the greatest actors and most good looking, but he was a great singer. His son Jared Is awesome too!
The more one experiences life the more that same soul feels words like these. Well done Richard. You seem to feel the words you sing as one who's lived long and deep enough to be an acquaintance to them, closely. Those of us who've been around the block a few times recognize this.
Everytime i heard this song, still tears always flow
Absolutely beautiful song.👍👍👍👍👍👍
Best arrangements. Moving interpretation. Merci Richard, merci Monsieur.
I believe him. I feel it. The only thing that really matter. He delivers, and that makes him a singer in my book. It's all about that feeling.
I have this album and two others of his...I absolutely love his voice and many songs by Jimmy Webb are just amazing! Richard's voice was beautiful!
Thank you, PhilThis magical gift of music that can transport us to the stars. Anjali, Natasha

Great song. Feel all the same.. There's no love with my wife.. But I'll never leave my 1 year old baby boy..
as an actor his work has impressed me for decades, what an amazing talent

Ya lo demostró en Camelot...un excelete cantante y un magnífico actor.
Fabulous !!!!!!
Orca and this are Richard Harris" greatest achievements.

The reason why Richard Harris sang it with more soul is because the song is about his own son.
What a voice!
Lovely
Agreed!

I used an online translator for adnangold's comment. It reads thus:
A magnificent interpretation from a human.
does a fine job of it!!
Written by J. Claude François e Jean-Pierre Boutavre. In 1971 this French song of memorable Quality was written for Richard Harris by Excellent Derry songwriter Phil Coulter and Bill Martin.
Everytime when I watched the new Harry Potter movie without him in it, I really missed him a lot, a whole lot.

You're sleeping, son, I know
But really this can't wait
I wanted to explain before it gets too late
For your mother and me, love has finally died
This is no happy home, but God knows how I've tried
Because you're all I have, my boy
You are my life, my pride, my joy
And if I stay, I stay because of you, my boy
I know it's hard to understand
Why did we ever stop
We're more like strangers now
Each acting out a part
I have laughed, I have cried
I have lost every game
Taking all that I can take
But I'll stay just the same
Because you're all I have, my boy
You are my life, my pride, my joy
And if I stay, I stay because of you, my boy
Sleep on, you haven't heard a word
Perhaps it's just as well
Why spoil your little dreams
Why put you through that hell
Life is no fairy tale as one day you will know
But now you're just a child
I'll stay here and watch you grow
Because you're all I have, my boy
You are my life, my pride, my joy
And if I stay, I stay because of you, my boy
(Repeat to fade...)
@georgegleek Try this is where I came in, that end note is a killer. I'm a singer and boy , even I can't get that !!
good nice
Another Turkish singer also sang this song : Tanju Okan - Seni Hayatimca Sevdim
Elvis gave it a different kind of feeling, but no less intense, Richard once told me, though he hated the fact that the song's composer apparently said Presley had finally given the song a definitive reading. @JoeElvis2009 great comment.Elvis' version is awesome. His vocals toward the end are amazing.Elvis respected everyone.
Well i have to say this is the very first time i've EVER heard someone other than Elvis sing this this tune.....though sorry i disagree, the Elvis version is far better......But i have to say Harris does a fine job.
Many thanks for posting it.
Claude François a crée cette musique magnifique dont Comme d'habitude repris en Anglais par Paul Anka pour Frank Sinatra
the better version of the song, second to none. he can do both acting and singing and nobody does it better
i can't understand why people insist to say Harris was not a singer, as he was not able to sing. He's great in Man of the Wilderness and Juggernaut. x
"[Elvis] never gave it the feeling that Harris did."
Don't think that's true, I think Presley's voice in his cover conveys emotions beautifully.
Jessy, this song is for you and your boy who's coming home from furlough this holidays... This is Richard harris..He is long dead but the song , his voice lives with the lyrics..
@GJNCA Well i get you never heard the live version that Elvis done of that song, and i do love but version, cos both version are pretty good....
I am Richard Harris and like your song😅
a really lovely version - who said he's not a singer?
thank you for your reply, phil!!! with metta! natasha
He is one of my favourite singers - not the perfect voice, but the perfect delivery.... With much metta!
I'm glad to see so many agree - and have removed the insulting comments from those You-tubers who want to make personal insults a feature on this thread.
Well, he couldn´t be a singer, but he was better than the crap we had nowadays.
