I love Heart Gold. On my first play through I decided to catch a Zubat and evolve it into Golbat to fight Morty, as it was fast, knew bite, and was immune to poison. Leveling it up wasn't easy. It fainted a lot at first and I felt bad for the little pixel bat so I would let it follow me and give it haircuts to make it happy. When it evolved into Golbat I figured I would give it a few more levels to be safe, but when it gained another level it evolved into Crobat. Made me really happy 😊
Crobat is probably one of my favourite flying/poison types Iｔｉｓ ｓｏ ｃｏｏｌｌｌ
Honestly, who needs most of the regional birds when Crobat is a very solid story mode Pokémon?
I got gastly so had no need for zubat but if you don't get gastly then zubat is another way to get mean look to catch abra for teleport.
I was using a Zubat in Legends Arceus and it died soooooo much it was so annoying but when it evolved it was overpowered since it was a level 22 Crobat

Slugma has a Base speed of 20 and Magnemite has a base speed of 40, plus I ran the calcs the Thunderbolt had a 6.3 chance to OHKO Fast, Also Slugma has really low Special Defense and Magnemite has base 95 Special Attack Should have used Quagsire

I can only speak for myself but I liked level grinding, and I'm not saying they should remove the New EXP. Share because I find it useful for evolving Pokémon solely for their dex entries; but if they brought back the on/off option I would be very happy.
I liked giving my team one on one attention so I knew exactly what they could do and how much they could withstand.
Yeah,The X/Y and SM/USUM exp.share was the best
I'd specifically say it's better in SM/USUM since they reintroduced the "higher levels get less exp from lower levels" mechanic. XY's Exp. Share felt kinda excessive without that detail balancing it out.

You know, with all of the trouble Slugma caused, it might've been a good idea to just use Quagsire. Yes, it has a doubled up type weakness to Grass with Feraligatr... But that's literally their only overlapping type. And thanks to the fact that about half of the Grass types in this game are also Poison type, he has two counters for most Grass types to switch to in Fearow and Espeon.

He could use also Cyndaquil as starter :/ this video needs a remake
@@LordRemiem I did a similar run, with wild battles disabled - so no catching and no grinding. Typhlosion was a monster the first half of the game, Ampharos got me through the league, and Quagsire and Dragonite did the deed against Red (at levels 43 and 58), with all the X SpDef items and exploiting Venusaur's bad IA to setup 6 Dragon Dances.

He should have used Quagsire anyways as the water/ground typing makes it quite powerful except against grass, particularly as its attack is higher than its special attack so ground attacks are especially damaging. Having 2 water pokemon (one of which has an electric immunity) would not be a bad thing in Gen 2.
I still would choose Typhlosion for this sort of playthrough. Feraligatr may be pretty good itself, but Magcargo honestly weighs it down so much more than Quagsire would do for Typhlosion. 8+2 is less than 6+5, you know.
Could also use Vaporeon.
That too, but I think I'd like to get a different Eeveelution because Water/Ground is too good to pass up on.
@@gengarzilla1685 that combo is great but Quagsire itself has some issues, namely underwhelming stats and Ice Punch onky being available through the Battle Frontier after you’re already champion. If anything you could always use them both but in different roles. Plus Eevee is capable of breeding with both the Typhlosion and Ampharos lines so you could still go with another Eeveelution if you so desired.

Bayleaf is really good for Whitney! It has reflect, poison powder, synthesis, and razor leaf help to hard block. Setting up reflect and then poisoning it twice allows for you to synthesis and potion until the poison timer runs out. Bayleaf is also really bulky, so it can absorb several hits from Whitney.
But to get there you need to go through dollar store Lance the Bird Keeper and a sexy Bug catcher and we know how Meganium cannot stand against them.

THANK YOU!!! I’m tired of people saying the new exp share makes it too easy, I only play nuzlockes and them removing the grinding makes it much more enjoyable
As a person whos first Pokemon game was Pokemon Sun, I can say it was hell to level up without it
Weird that Mikey needed that much grinding tho. I don't usually need it except for the first gym, because I wipe every single trainer I see... and I saw Michael skipping some of them in this video.
You should try playing normal Pokemon.
Yup, as egoraptor stated. More time does not equal more difficult.
It makes it more enjoyable just playing the normal game too. Why do so many people think that level grinding for hours makes a game more difficult. No, it does not, it just makes it boring. If you want to make your game harder, just turn off the exp share and avoid battling wild Pokemon so you won't level up any time fast.
I had a similar experience with Morty in my recent HeartGold playthrough. In my case, I switched in the level 1 Togepi that hatched from the egg to buy turns to heal one of my other Pokémon, then realized Gengar couldn't do anything against Togepi unless I attacked it. Eventually the Gengar ran out of PP and struggled itself to death.
I had a HootHoot and it was amazing against Gengar.
It had the ability Insomnia so the Hypnosis couldn't do anything.
It's hella disappointing how hard Morty got cucked over in the remake. Swapping that Gengar's Dream Eater for Sucker Punch turned his ace Pokémon from an actual menace to an exploitable joke.
Yeah, the fact they removed dream eater for some reason is so stupid, especially since sucker punch runs off its bad attack anyways. Like, at least give it dark pulse or something.@@gengarzilla1685

The most important lesson here; Slugma is worse than you think.
Also, I'm pretty sure that the Johto games are the worst for that grinding due to the awkward level curve. Playing an enhanced (hack) version of the game such as Sacred Gold or Storm Silver is so much better in this regard. You know it's bad when a so-called "difficultly" actually means less grinding.
as someone who used a slugma in oras in my swampert run i Agree alot, Hate that Snail, My manetric was a better fire type than him
Slugma/Magcargo are such early gen Pokémon. Slugma has a pathetic 250 BST and for some reason evolves at a stupid level 38. You'd think having to carry such a weak pokémon for so long would reward you with a good pokémon. But no. its BST is 410 (pre-gen 7). That BST is around a second-stage starter. The other fully-evolved Pokémon around that BST mostly evolve at levels under 20.
Magcargo should've been an evo in the early 20s at the latest. This pokémon, instead of being a fire slug that randomly shows up on grassy routes in Kanto, should've been a capture in the burned tower's basement when the pokémon are levels 14-16 or something, so you'd have to carry it for like, 10-ish levels at most.
The worst part is that out of the 160 BST boost, 80 went into a completely useless Defense stat since 3 of its weaknesses are rock, fighting and 4x ground, probably the 3 most ubiquitous physical attacking types. That also meant that 80 BST had to be spread over 5 stats, so aside from Special Defense, every stat only rises by *10.* The 40 in Spdef ofc are also wasted cuz it has a 4x weakness to water, another common type.
Please gamefreak, for the love of god give Magcargo another Evo that puts it at like 530 BST with like, a fire/steel typing or something so its defenses actually mean something.
You should have named it Hitmontage. Such a missed opportunity.

I started this challenge today! Just got to Goldenrod, picked up Kenya the Spearow and evolved her into Fearow, picked up an Abra from the Game Corner and evolved that into Alakazam. I also went with your strategy picked Totodile as my starter and the 3 eggs from Primo.
So far hating Slugma just like you! Thinking about grinding out some cash to get myself and early Dratini from the Game Corner and swapping Slugma out for it.
Should have gotten Cyndaquill, that way you could have avoided Slugma altogether. That may be my Quagsire bias talking though.

I remember doing the miltank battle on my first heartgold play through with a level 23croconaw, a level 3 gastly, a level 7 mareep, and a level 4 pidgey. It took me 127 tries. It was incredibly annoying (when I finally beat miltank, croconaw was level 31 and it evolved
The funny thing is that Croconaw probably would actually be the best equipped to deal with Miltank simply because it gets rage which you can charge with the Clefairy's pathetic double-slaps beforehand.

Miltank wasn’t a problem for me because of a trick I saw on a Soul Silver Speedrun. Quilava + Fire Blast + Charcoal (from the Farfetch’d house)
That's exactly what I use. Whitney can be tricky in Gen 2 without easy access to OP moves and with everything having max bulk but she's a borderline pushover in Gen 4.
