  • @garethedwardking5860
    @garethedwardking5860 3 года назад +2

    Crows (Corvidae) are not predators per se but rather opportunistic omnivores which are able to take advantage of a wide variety of prey and non-prey items. If they were predators they would enjoy more efficient attack strategies so as to avoid inefficient energy loss. This Magpie was taking advantage of a possible prey item struggling in front of it but it wasn't prepared at all to persue it. Additionally, the Mallard chick was in an inappropriate habitat (on land) and so much more vulnerable. Herons and gulls are more efficient and wily predators of ducks and there is a habitat overlapp.

I happened to come along as the crow was attempting to fly off w it in its beak, but the baby pigeon was too heavy and the crow dropped it. As I was picking the baby pigeon up the crow was sitting on top of a nearby street sign waiting to see what was going to happen.
