I've been in the avian field for nearly 30yrs now. Having "hands on" experience with everything from Warblers to Birds of Prey and Budgies to Macaws. So i've seen my fair share of bird encounters. This one isn't shocking your typical take down from an Accipiter which is a family of Hawks that prey pretty much exclusively on birds. And i must say this Cuckoo put up a valiant fight for it's life. They have extremely sharp beaks and the right jab can inflict serious damage. This is why when birds of prey make there kills they often lean back to prevent there heads & eyes from being struck by there prey. In most cases other birds. I kid you not folks when i say i once witnessed a male Sharp-Shinned Hawk again in the Accipiter family. Try and take down an adult American Crow. The end result was certainly NOT in the Hawk's favor. As the Crow believe it or not ended up jabbing the much smaller Hawk in the eye and the blood was flowing. Instead of escaping the Crow finished the job with a few "death blows" to the Hawks head. And before i knew it the smaller Hawk was DEAD...!!! So some of these larger Corvids should be respected because they are every bit as much a predator as birds of prey are.

I've been in the avian field for nearly 30yrs now. Having "hands on" experience with everything from Warblers to Birds of Prey and Budgies to Macaws. So i've seen my fair share of bird encounters. This one isn't shocking your typical take down from an Accipiter which is a family of Hawks that prey pretty much exclusively on birds. And i must say this Cuckoo put up a valiant fight for it's life. They have extremely sharp beaks and the right jab can inflict serious damage. This is why when birds of prey make there kills they often lean back to prevent there heads & eyes from being struck by there prey. In most cases other birds. I kid you not folks when i say i once witnessed a male Sharp-Shinned Hawk again in the Accipiter family. Try and take down an adult American Crow. The end result was certainly NOT in the Hawk's favor. As the Crow believe it or not ended up jabbing the much smaller Hawk in the eye and the blood was flowing. Instead of escaping the Crow finished the job with a few "death blows" to the Hawks head. And before i knew it the smaller Hawk was DEAD...!!! So some of these larger Corvids should be respected because they are every bit as much a predator as birds of prey are.
