    The cuckoo is either a very late hatcher or it has been deliberately placed in the nest in some kind of "experiment". Normally the egg is laid by the Cuckoo's mother in the unsuspecting host bird's nest and it is timed to hatch out 2 days earlier than the genuine chicks do. They also develop more quickly and are already twice the size of the host bird's chicks, that's if the host eggs get chance to hatch out. That's only if the cuckoo chick hasn't already heaved the eggs out of the nest, using its specially developed back. It is believed that the featherless baby cuckoo has a highly sensitive area on its back which when it comes into contact with anything, it gives it the urge to push it away and out of the nest with its muscular back.When its feathers grow they cover this activation spot and it doesn't have the same eviction urge. Some breeds of cuckoo are happy to grow up with the host chicks, provided they are being fed. But normally they will eject the eggs first or if they are behind their schedule they throw the hatchlings out of the nest with their superior physique. They then have the ability to mimic the sound of the host's brood, which triggers the foster parents instincts to feed the cuckoo. The experts also believe that the cuckoo chick can develop a similar design to its inner throat as the target host chick in order to fool the parents into feeding it.
    The cuckoo chick in this nest has a totally different colour inside its open beak and this might explain why the host bird isn't feeding it.

      You say this brood was messed with by someone adding a cuckoo chick, but i've seen cuckoo with other hatchlings and the cuckoo is always easy to indentify and had a red color inside the beak that other hatchlings do not have. Also if as you say cuckoo would be so efficient at killing the host bird hatchlings they would push their host specie to extinction. So sometimes they loose in their parasiting plot, this video might be such a case. And who says the mother isn't feeding the cuckoo, maybe she makes sure all get fed.

Best guess is that the mother does not feel stimulated to feed the strange chick because she has the right stimuli in her nest (her own chicks) and they have a different color inside their mouth. Cuckoo Chick: "Picking up?!"

    The fact that the cuckoo chick has grown that much shows that it is being fed. I think the reason we see the parent birds feed their chicks and not the cuckoo chick is because they are calling for food at the right pitch that indicates they are hungry. Whereas the cuckoo chick is calling for food at a different pitch than the parent bird is used to. In other videos where we see parent birds feeding the cuckoo chick that’s cuz the really chicks were already starved or thrown out.

      Unfortunately this is one of those made up videos. Someone put the chick in that nest long after it hatched, so it's not a surprise the mother is ignoring this giant hatchling it's not strong enough to get rid of.

    • @Phoenixesper1
      @Phoenixesper1 Год назад +4

      Actually cukoo chicks are twice the size of the hosts birds chicks at birth, but due to instinct the mother can't discern the difference until its birds develop that bright yellow throat and at the point the mother will cease all feedings to the cukoo.

      That chick, however, is designed to kill the rest of the chicks in the nest. I am secure in saying that that is a particularly evil animal. It's just so intimately cruel. I mean, too bad so sad? As long as both species populations are sustainable then I'll tolerate it.

      That's not how it works sadly. The clips where the mother feeds the cuckoo are edited out, that's one healthy cuckoo if I ever saw one. The mistake this cuckoo did was not getting rid of the eggs(ie the competition). That's normally what they do. The mother can't tell the difference, they all smell the same. That's why cuckoos have been so successful. In some cases the cuckoo can become enormous compared to the bird feeding it. I had a book with cuckoos long ago and there was this funny picture of the mother bird sitting on the cuckoo and feeding it. The cuckoo was like 4-5 times the size of the "mother".
