    We often see the sarcastic moments of Ryan Reynolds, the actor of Deadpool, and in this video, we talk about how to use sarcasm without looking like a jerk. Sarcasm is one of the toughest types of humor to pull off. When executed improperly, it can leave people angry at you as often as it leaves them laughing. So in this video, we are going to take a look at the king of sarcasm, Ryan Reynolds, a.k.a. Deadpool.
    So how do you use sarcasm without leaving people angry or hurt? Well, if you're going to do it it cannot be a one-off potshot; otherwise, it feels like a pointed attack. So getting in the habit of joking all the time even in semi serious moments helps signal to others that your statements are usually to be taken in jest. We also talked about this at length in our video on Chris Pratt so check it out as well!

    Quick summary of the 4 types of sarcasm used by Ryan Reynolds (but not Deadpool):
    1. Joke "all the time" (daily and often), so people know that's part of your personality, and they won't have to guess when you're being sarcastic.
    2. Lower your brain filters to add specific (random or crazy) words or phrases to your humor.
    3. Make yourself the target of your joke.
    4. When you make others the target of your joke, make it so absurd that they can't possibly be offended!

      He means open your mind when you’re making sarcastic jokes. Like in the video when instead of Ryan saying “I looked like a girl” when he was talking about why he didn’t get girls in high school, he said “I looked like a Vietnamese girl”. That’s a small example but the specificity made the joke much funnier.

    • @ghhhghhh5507
      @ghhhghhh5507 6 лет назад +39

      Or when he was talking about his wife being I labor and he played a song that annoyed her, he said “steak knives were sticking out of her eyes” instead of “her eyes looked liked knives”. Seems like nothing significant but it actually makes the joke seem way funnier.

      sorting? do you mean screening? have you considered it's something others use to screen for people like yourself, as well? if you truly believe you will *never* be happy with someone who doesn't appreciate your humor, the belief will probably fulfill itself. you can take or leave this part: but how precious is your sarcasm, really? is it some kind of fundamental truth? or are you just indulging yourself at the expense of other people? if it's just stupid, meaningless jokes, maybe it can go, especially if it's for someone who sincerely cares about you - but you're free to make that choice. just my thoughts off the cuff

    I find myself using sarcasm often when I'm in a situation where I feel a bit threatened or isn't totally relaxed. It works quite good to ease the tension, both for myself and the group. But the downside is that when I do this in a new group of people, I also lock myself in to being that kind of person. I know it's all in my head, but I think I subconsciously feel inauthentic if I switch personality. It's like l paint myself into a corner, even though I hate being too sarcastic.
    I can also relate to this being-a-in- a-certain-way dilemma when it comes to hanging out with old friends. I often don't enjoy that as much as with new friends. I've changed so much lately, but it's my old me that runs the show when I'm in the context where old me are used to being.
    Thanks for all the great stuff,
    /Alex

      Just play with it to surprise people and delight them.
      We, as humans, don't have to always be like this and like that, we don't have to wear one mask, we can wear several (I don't use the word "mask" negatively here).
      I'm almost always joking and messing around even when the situation is not appropriate (this is what makes my sense of humor unique to others I guess, cause I throw jokes when they're not expecting one).
      But sometimes, I go into deep conversations and that surprises them cause they're not expecting me here.
      So just use how people see you at your advantage :)

      Hey Marius, I'm really trying to practice this way of being! But many times it's easier said than done. But being aware, and constantly reminding myself for how I should act for sure helps me gradualy move in the right direction!

    • @optimize.
      @optimize. 6 лет назад +2

      Understandable intuitive response. Still, sarcasm is probably not the ideal response to a threatening situation.
      Try to experiment with just being authentic and calling out the situation and/or the person saying something threatening. If you show that you just stay composed and are comfortable confronting the situation it will show that you're comfortable being authentic and show your strength.
      The best part is that you won't feel uncomfortable and prevent 'painting yourself into a corner'.
      Good luck

      It makes sense to me whey they aren't really making videos about that. They're not women so there will definitely be people who feel like they're telling women how to act or like they're saying something is unattractive because they mention another trait is seen as attractive. Both of those things were brought up in the comments for the video about Wonder Woman.
      It's actually really frustrating that so many people just want to be upset at something instead of taking what they can from breakdowns and advice videos instead of being critical of it existing but it would almost certainly happen, considering it happened before. Annnd despite all of that, I hope they make a video about it too because I bet it would be great.
      Since I gave you this weird, long reply I figure I'd add something about your question. Think about movies you've watched and women you found attractive in them. What traits did they have? Were they energetic, funny, serious, charismatic, goofy, easy going, friendly, caring...? That would pretty much help you narrow down the things that you find attractive.

    Interesting video, but I think it really showed up the difference between Canadian Sarcasm and U.K. Sarcasm. Ryan's humour is quite 'soft', i don't know how else to describe it, compared to sarcasm that you hear in the UK. The more offensive a person can be with sarcasm, normally the funnier it ends up being if you don't get offended and can retaliate back at them. Maybe you could do a video on English Saracsm as well? It'd be really cool to hear a side by side of the differences!

      Amanda Newson - my problem with the idea that the UK is more offensive in sarcasm is that when a country investigates mean posts and puts a man on trail for a joke video with a Nazi Pug . . . .I don't know if offensive is the right way to go for them. Maybe soft is what the UK requires.
      Aside from that real world stuff, I do understand what you're speaking about in sarcastic differences between Americans and those in the UK. If I am to think of what I thought of the UK in the past I would agree. The UK of now is not so good on the taking a joke.

    • @_banja
      @_banja 6 лет назад +28

      The Nazi pug video isn't much to do with sarcasm. The UK's governments actions are not a good representation of what the populations humour is like, as in social interactions between every day people. Do you think the current American government is a good think to base my opinion on the average American on? I do agree there is an increase of sensitivity online.

    It helps if you live a life where you have a choice of either joking about things, or crying about things, and having a preference toward laughing, and not having someone who gives a crap if you cry anyway. As harsh as that sounds, a lot of my own humor developed over that choice. In any case it really helped me and still does.

    Last time I checked Sarcasm is a form of irony. In this case, sarcasm is used by saying the exact opposite of what you mean in order to get a point across (or as an insult). Ryan Reynolds humor is funny, but it's not sarcastic. Not the way I know it anyways. You should do a video on Bill Murray, who is great at all things ironic, including sarcasm. He has some real charisma.

    I lost a friend for a few years due to a misunderstanding. I had just left a very abusive relationship, and my girlfriend and I were living together, saving money to buy a house. One day, we saw a news article about a man who had beaten a woman to death, and I made a sarcastic remark, saying, "Oh, he must have really loved her." I should have clarified that I was being sarcastic, but my friend took it seriously and gradually distanced herself from me, leading to us growing apart. About five years later, we bumped into each other, and she explained what had happened. We both felt deeply regretful about the miscommunication and wasted years, and we ended up in tears over it. So fair warning be careful, in my defense I was still raw over my abuse and him always saying he did things because he loved me..and that is NOT love.

      See, the problem is is that he isn't condoning offensive jokes in any situation. There are times when saying something offensive is simply... well, offensive, and not funny. You have to read the situation and the person. "Offensive" jokes can definitely be hilarious in the right context, but they can also be devastating to you. Take the whole twitter situation with that one chick who famously tweeted about how she would get AIDs from going to Africa, then clarifying she wouldn't because she was white. She was obviously joking, but it wasn't in the right context, and her entire life got destroyed because of it.

    My filter, for keeping things light and humorous when and where needed is to joke "often" - not all the time. People know that I have a sense of humor, but I also know when to "dial it in" and be serious too. That's the differential for me. As a 911 Operator, people know I do have a serious side, but I have a lighter side too. If people know that you joke around on a regular basis, but also know when its time to be serious - this has a two fold benefit. First, it lets people know that you do have a serious, "business side" to your personality. Second, it also lets people know that I have a sense of humor too. Its important to have both sides of that. But when you do let your humorous side out, follow steps 2-4 and you will have nothing to worry about.

    I can be a *very* sarcastic SOB- but the thing I like about sarcasm is that, in telling someone something in a sarcastic way, you're also telling them that you have a high enough opinion about their intelligence that you know they will understand that you're not being serious.
    It also helps to accompany the sarcasm with a little wry smile, just to remove all doubt about seriousness.
