Bro, I srsly gotta commend you, because for someone who’s only just recently delving into the world of hiphop, you’re completely throwing yourself in the deep end, a few of the albums you’ve reacted to seriously demand an acquired taste from someone who’s already familiar with the ins and outs of the genre and you somehow still just understand a lot of these songs appeal regardless of whether or not they’re even to your liking. There were parts of this album that were a challenge. I think there are a few times when I mention that I have to actively shut off the part of my mind that follows lyrics and just listen to everything as sound. It's very different from what I'm accustomed to, but I do enjoy what's going on. There are a lot of interesting layers, and I can see why people can throw this on repeat for several listens in a row. Hip Hop is one of the most diverse genres in the world imo. There’s so many different subgenres in it. We have backpack, punk, melodic, emo, alternative, and grunge to name a few. WLR is extremely experimental and a modern classic if you have the ear for it, modern mainstream punk. Got friends who play in punk bands and they wouldn’t dare stray this far from the herd
I love punk, and wlr since it came out, I noticed it was something I automatically loved. It is a true punk album
The metamorphosis is carti's maturity and his tendency to completely change his music sonically. He would never have done this kind of album 4 years ago if he hadn't gone through this metamorphosis and straying off finding new sounds. He foreshadowed all of this slowly in his album Die Lit with Flatbed Freestyle and R.I.P, but went full throttle in this album. Personally I would have recommended listening to his discography chronologically as it would have highlighted the "metamorphosis" strongly
Let’s be real, both selftitled and die lit are very boring in comparison. I think wlr is enough of carti for bob, atleast until carti drops another project.

Super dope seeing you attempt to understand stuff like carti instead of immediately writing it off.
30:05 the “metamorphosis” carti is talking about is the style of music he is making now opposed to just a couple years ago. his last project “Die Lit” has a completely different sound to it, more of a mesmerizing melodic sound. with wlr, it’s more dependent on hard-hitting drums, loud and raspy vocals, almost a blend of punk and rap. also, his clothing style has changed drastically from just a couple years ago, as in he used to dress more basic in aesthetics and would wear streetwear like supreme, off white and jordan’s. now he dresses as some have dubbed like “a bisexual vampire”, focused more on high fashion designer, mainly black clothing.

i've had this video recommended for like that past couple days and i put off watching this but i definitely shouldn't have. with you just getting into hip hop/ rap it's super cool to see your reaction. 110% subscribing!
Something I never realized about Carti’s music until watching this reaction is how vital pop culture context is to hip hop. I mean, I knew it was important of course when discussing songs that are about social issues, but there are actually so many little cultural artifacts in this album that you (by not fault of your own) couldn’t have picked up on without being invested in Carti’s music for years. Your association with “Vamp” as Red for Bloods the gang is very cool, but I’m not even sure carti meant anything that deep. He literally has been dressing like a vampire for two years and posting on Instagram strange photos of himself that were a total departure from his earlier image (hence DJ Akademics reference to these posts on the intro of ‘Control’: many hip hop fans thought these photos were “gay”). Beyond that: in metamorphosis, Carti sings about using “hieroglyphics” because people can’t understand him, which is a meta and tongue-in-cheek reference to the whole industry telling him his lyrics were garbage. Whole Lotta Red is Carti being the best at being the worst. Embracing punk rock aesthetics to say the least in the coolest way possible and get out before the track gets boring. It is honestly an incredible artistic statement and (unfortunately for your rap discovery journey) is actually kind of an end marker for the “trap” genre, the final stage before a, well, Metamorphosis. I could go on about other little moments: Vamp anthem sampling a classic Vampire movie theme while Carti calls his legion of “vamps” fans to ride with him and the rest of the industry to “get ready” (imagine this track at a concert) or the usually not-concerned-with-subject-matter Carti screaming his heart out over his love for his dead brother (Die4Guy) its and explosive, emotional and exhilarating album that deserves to be heard as loud as possible with as many people as possible. To me, it’s a masterpiece that can only truly be appreciated with enough cultural context. The thing is though, you HAD to hear this record at some point, And I’m really impressed you gave it this much careful consideration and thought. You’re a gem on this platform, man - enjoy the ride!
Typo: not Carti’s dead brother - his willingness to die for his brother. My bad!
I’ve been listening to rap since as long as I can remember (like most millennials) and even I had to start adjusting my ears in the 2010s when trap took over. I can’t imagine how jarring it might be for someone going from the funk/soul inspired old school hip hop into the electronic inspired Southern style of trap. Jumping from something like College Dropout into this would make you wonder where exactly the appeal is coming from.
There are so many times when I'm trying to digest something in a song and I know I have a massive knowledge gap regarding the immediate topic. It makes it very tough, so I'm glad you picked up on this. It's also why I try to focus on my own interpretation and hear what the song is telling me rather than trying to read all the side notes on Genius.com. Those notes can help me understand more, but I like letting the art speak to me however it can, even if it means I'm wildly incorrect haha
But I think that makes it fun for you guys, too. A different perspective. Different mindset. Thanks for commenting on this specifically. Lack of context/knowledge has made song albums a real challenge.
Bob the Poppop It’s really cool to hear the raw/initial thoughts you have without knowing much about the artist. Love the videos and your interpretations
this album is deeper about gangs than people realize
Your immediate reaction to New Neon and liking that sound the most means you neeed to listen to his past albums Die Lit and Self Titled dude, those albums are mostly that type of sound and that’s what he’s been known for, before WLR which was actually his first try at a “punk” sounding album
IDK how people weren’t ready for his punk style because to me RIP was so weird in die lit until WLR came along and i was ohhhhhhh
my exact thoughts
Carti as always had the punk style. That’s been his vibe the whole time. That ain’t nothing new. He just starting screaming and adding more bass
I legit watched this whole video to see your reaction to this work of art. Keep it up.
thank you, someone who's genuinely listening to all the details and synergy between beat & vocals
With Playboi Carti being in my top 5 favorite rappers list. I can say, you hit this entire album on the Fucking Nose👏🏾 respect my g. This is my first time seeing any of your videos by the way🔥.
I think you would be kinda interested in his 2021 Rolling Loud NYC performance
@@DLR_937 Yeah hope he reacts to his recent Rolling Loud concert. It has some mix transitions of punk metal

I REALLY wanna do more Kendrick Lamar. Section 80 impressed the shit out of me, and I've heard he gets pretty deep with lyrics. My kind of jam, for sure. Don't be surprised if the next album is one from Kendrick.
@@bobthepoppop Good Kid MAAD city is my personal favorite from Kendrick, I see the appeal to TPAB, I'm personally a big story telling fan and GKMC is an amazing story put together as an album. BTW keep up the great vids!
@@bobthepoppop Yeah, I noticed you really like to analyse the lyrics, I think you'd love the album To Pimp a Butterfly, really deep lyrics and alot of jazz samples. It blew my head when I finished listening to it
To understand the “metamorphosis” and understand the grand context of that word relating to the album, you would have to listen to Carti’s earlier work. This album WLR was the most different, experimental piece of work he’s ever done. Before WLR, you can see on his previous album Die Lit how the transition started with flirtations of rock and different beats. Before DIE lit his notable work was Self-Titled Playboi Carti, which is and sounds completely different from WLR but it sounds similar to Die Lit. From the start of his career and up to WLR he’s evolving, and I believe after watching your video that he still is evolving.
On top of that, I will admit I love the album. But I believe most of these songs were made more to perform than to listen thru headphones. Mosh pit music

Very often cartis, travis’ lyrics are just images of things (‘lamborghini parked outside its purple like lean’) and should be digested as such. Even if they dont neccessarily have the depth they still can be appreciated and enjoyed

True rockstar stuff. Give it a shot

Man. I’ve listened to hip hop as my main genre for years and I had a much harder time getting into and appreciating WLR than you, someone much less experienced with the genre and the more extreme sides of it. I hope that at some point in life I can learn to appreciate music as easily as you. Truly inspiring.
Lmao it’s not that deep
It’s just a difference in culture
You listen to too much rap music. Listen to more genres, like late 70s punk and in the 80s when metal really started. That is what this album songs like to me from an energy/vibe stand point
@@cheeseballs9579 I listen to everything, including punk from multiple decades, but for me the really abrasive distorted synths aren’t at all akin to a distorted guitar for example, and although I was a playboi carti fan before WLR it was a bit overwhelming.

New age has everything not one thing and you showed that very well!!! Thank you sir!!!
Loved your reaction Bob! If only more people had that same mindset going into different genres. Keep it up

hearing you compare m3tamorphosis and forty six & 2 is honestly great i love both the songs and honestly your entire way you listen to this album is so wonderful
Congrats on 1 million
Even as a Carti fan, i was so quick to throw negative judgement when I heard this album for the first time. I think it’s so great how open minded you are even as a person fairly new to hip hop. Also think it’s cool how you really took people’s advice from the Rodeo album review. Great review and a truly different perspective from other reviews 🤘
faxx im a carti fan too but i just hated the album at the first listen but it ended up growing on me. especially tracks like stop breathing, jump out the house, teen x.
@@mybloodyvalentine2316 I swear I’m the only one who liked it on their first listen but I wasn’t really a carti fan at the time despite liking what I had heard. Kinda interesting
You’re not a carti fan stop, real carti fans rode from the first listen
@@JhonyandBeamer being a fan doesn’t mean you have to “ride” with an artist’s album upon first listen. Just because an artist releases something does not mean you as a fan have to automatically like it. It can take time. Objectivity is what separates fans from straight up stans who will literally do anything for their artist.
The way people first felt about this album is how people first felt about Michael Jackson’s invincible album in 2001
This is hands down one of the best album reactions/reviews I have ever watched. I already enjoyed this album but the comments you made make me appreciate it even more. I love how you stayed so optimistic throughout the whole listen even though this music is completely different than what you are used to. Others would have dismissed such a foreign sound but you made an effort to understand this album from both a musical and lyrical standpoint. Subscribed.
I got it in my recommended again. This guy is the best. WLR still bangs to this day.
On Punk Monks, at least how i interpreted it, was that he wasn’t specifically saying he dislikes people who are friendly, more that he dislikes people who are fake. Or people who are just using him to advance themselves. This ties back into the verse where he’s talking about all these rappers he was close with before they were popular, wanting to sign them and help them grow, and basically getting screwed over or they turned his back on him. And no because of this he’s basically just cynical and wants nothing to do with anybody. Exemplified with the ‘don’t talk to me’ line.
period
I’m surprised at how positive this review was, considering how hard it is for someone new to Carti to get into his music and understand it. If you need another album where another musician uses his voice as an instrument, Trippie Redd’s Life’s a Trip is another album looking into. Looking forward to seeing you venture into the world of hiphop more!
Around the 30:00 minute mark on the song M3tamorphosis, i think the evolution he's talking about, is his own artistic evolution. Cartis initial entrance on to the rap scene, was as a fairly average uninspiring artist (in my opinion of course), but now that he has spent time working on 3 albums (that have all become more and more experimental), he is morphing into someone i regard as one of the most forward thinking, new and experimental rappers out there. I get his lyrics are far from deep or layered, but as most people have pointed out, thats not the reason we are listening, i suspect most of us are listening because he's a one of a kind artist in the landscape today.
lmao he has always been in the forefront of experimentation when he was cash carti
He wasn’t uninspiring at the early stages because everyone was copying him even back then. I think this is a big reason why he keeps changing up his sound
His lyrics aren’t deep but they definitely are layered
Yea a huge context this guy didnt realize is that Whole Lotta Red is a giant step outside Carti's previous boundaries
Metamorphosis like butterflies 🦋 he is very first person that I know use this emoji before it’s famous with all tiktok thot and wokeuplikethis* everybody tryna be carti so bad (all them ad-lips talk about what, huh he also got a song called WHAT it’s was amazing) so he had to Metamorphosis change his swag on some other shit /he got song called OTHER SHIT too and I love it
slang in Opium is his music record reference to hope it’s feel good without actually fixing things and make it’s even worse
I gotta respect this man for listening to this and like actually absorbing it. Even learning how to listen to the track as a whole, not just focusing on the lyrics
.whole lotta read 1 year reaction ruclips.net/video/loYwGe129U0/видео.html
You’ll be chillin around the house one day then one of the choruses will jump in your head and just keep repeating then you go back n go “why tf do I like this song” or you look at another song n go “let me give it another try, it’s only a minute”. Then you start to find yourself growing to like nearly all 24 songs.
I would recommend starting at the back his discography to give more context to how listen to his n this type music. Pay attention to his adlibs, he’s been perfecting how to use it like instrument in the background to help feel gaps in song but keep energy going. Urban dictionary will be your friend looking to slang for some, but if you don’t find it first off, then you probably weren’t meant to know, but it’s still very fun to research and look into (referring all hiphop)
If you want to understand auto tune voices as instruments, listen to Future’s albums: Future, HNDRXX, n Save Me. He’s a was a man person that help pioneer that weird style. Kanye recently said he was a big influence in his opinion
And brooo, punk monk went over your head because you don’t know his background in the music industry. Basically he rapping about all his relations in the rap politics and how he’s usually caught in the middle of someone’s bs when he just wants to worry bout himself. And they get mad when you shut them out to focus on yourself. Think about any bad falling outs you’ve had throughout life and you felt like they maybe try to frame in a bad light when in reality you just had more important things to focus on.
I think a lot of the lines in this album went over my head 😂😂
But I do appreciate the explanation on Punk Monk. That makes sense and makes the track even better
I can feel your love for music and not just one genre respect not many know how to stop analyzing the song instead of enjoying it and vibing
I really appreciate your openness and willingness to completely dive into a genre you no nothing about and find the value in it. Your enthusiasm about finding new music inspires me to listen to all the stuff you recommend! Keep going I love your content!
Im laughing at how much i enjoyed this reaction to an album i like so much. From your breakdown of the sounds/lyrics to your inferences about his life and what it would be like in his shoes. Even made me realize that people listen to music differently. Like how i almost strictly listen for sound/production without a care for lyrics (prob the producer in me) and how people like my friend who listens mostly for lyrics (prob the singer in her).
