The edit with the details about the bike was good. Better than having to try and remember when on the side of the tyre around a spanish twisty. Worked well.

Funny but you summed up my experience with my own BMW S1000r. Stupid fast and capable bike but could not for the life of me bond with it. Never felt like I was the one in control? So sold it and went old school XJR1300. No rider aids at all, heavy, slow (compared to the S1000r) but love it because I felt part of the bike. Go figure.

#1 Thank you guys so much for keeping the spirit of motorbikes alive! You are hands down the best channel out there for motorcycles (aside from our Lord Michael Neeves obviously). You convey the exciting nature of bikes, a great example is your review of the Suzuki 8R. Everyone else’s review was so boring I ended up watching yours twice!!! 😁 I watch your reviews and want to go out and buy them all!! Motorcycles are exciting! Despite manufacturers move towards pensioner friendly parallel twins and the move away from sports bikes there are still loads of us out here who love the POWER!!!!
#2 So bravo to BMW for making a pensioner friendly/comfortable missile!! Yes it’s too fast for the road but on the once or twice a ride you can open the taps there’s nothing more exciting and uplifting. Screaming in your helmet and boring the pants off your mates afterwards regaling stories of mind warping performance. If we don’t have bikes like the BMW, Hayabusa and the Panigale v4s what are we left with!?
I’m 56 yers old and I’m still not ready to give up my sports bikes, just can’t bring myself to buy an Adventure bike, regardless of how practical, comfortable they are. But with bikes like this BMW I could be swayed and make that big step towards comfort, practicality and old age. Never thought I’d say that.
Please keep it up the excellent work, reminding us why we liked bikes in the first place! 😁👍🏻

What you’ve said reminds me of my old S1000XR with full system. It came into its own at licence losing speeds, and I actually feared for my licence every time I rode it, as it just encouraged silliness. This bike does look fantastic, bar that hideous cat. I’ll stick to my V4 Pikes Peak for now.

I've been waiting for the bike like this! Max non-detuned power with easily available race exhaust and tune options, max electronic gizmos with ability to switch off wheelie control, minimum weight, "Ducati like" carbon and milled parts and all that in a comfortable package that can be used for say 4 day ~1000-mile trips with minimum luggage aimed at moving at descent pace through some incredible twisty roads without having to stop for gas all the time, not feeling beat up by the wind or aggressive riding position, or having to put on and shed merino wool layers incessantly due to large ambient temperature swings between mountains and the coast. Carbon wheels from the manufacturer is just icing on the cake. Only with all that I am ready to buy "the boring sounding inline 4" again after multiple V4s and V-twins.

As a very long time BMW rider. My favorite BMW of all time is my HP2 Sport. I have owned S1000RRs and now the M1000RR. Tested Ducs and KTms but they feel aggressive when nothing is really happening. A short "easy" stint and I was fatigued like I spent all day at the track. The BMWs are easy and smooth and then when you want to go bananas, they are bananas! To each thier own but I prefer a bike that always has more to offer.

BVG, what a legend, I'd really value your opinion!
I've got an M1000XR on order and it looks like it comes on RS11.
I won't be taking it on track at all so I assume the RS11s will be wasted on me.
I do mainly very spirited weekend backlane scratching and one or two long tours around Europe each year.
Can you recommend a good all-rounder that will suit both applications when the time comes to replace the RS11?
I prefer Michelins but also don't mind Bridgestones.
Doesn't look like Road 6 or T32 are available in a 200 rear so I guess I'm looking at either Power 6 or S23?
How do they compare when it comes to dry grip, wet grip, and mileage? Which would you recommend overall?
    Many thanks!

Chris, if you get the chance, see if you can get your hands on a Honda Transalp 750, I'm curious to see what you think. I'm pretty sure that bike is what the new 750 flat tracker is based off of. These bikes just remind me of what Jay Leno always says about both cars and bikes.. "It's FAR more fun to ride something slow at 10/10ths than it is to ride something stupidly fast at 3/10 or maybe 6/10ths." I've experienced this myself ripping a 1966 Toyota FJ40 with a 3 on the tree around the block.. It honestly was the most fun I've ever had in a car, the glasspack that all the internals were ate out by rats, the big 6 banger with the progressive Webber carb, the sound and those 31X11.50 tires on 12 inch wide rims that just gripped.. lap after lap ripping it up to red line and just barely being able to break the speed limit was absolutely hysterical and I was laughing my ass off to the point that I had to stop and dry my eyes before continuing..
I think the same can be said about riding older slower motorcycles like a classic Bonneville from the 60's/70's.. The sound and the feel of the bike make up for anything it lacks in utter speed.. not that it isn't still able to do the ton. :D

Each of these bikes have their application where they all are best at. Which one is best is determined by one;s intended use. I for one absolutely love naked bike category for street riding, but for track use I prefer supersports, and let me tell you from lots of experience traveling at pace for a week or even for a couple of long days on a naked bike is not as pleasant as on something like this. If you don’t plan on doing much “touring” I would definitely just get a naked, but if you are this is a much better option

I had the '15 XR and the '22 model. I liked the '22 but it felt like they were trying to make a road exclusive version of the GS (I'm very aware that 99.9% of GS owners never go offroad, mind); in contrast the '15 felt like they were making a slightly more comfortable RR. The '22 felt slow, much slower than I remember the '15 being, there was almost no power in the low RPM where the old model would pretty much power wheelie any time you flicked the throttle. Love that they put the shift cam in the M1000XR, hopefully it makes it to the base model.
I'd be interested in a review of the base M1000XR (non competition spec), I wonder if maybe the extra weigh of the non-carbon accesories might make the bike a bit liveable.

No that is applying a whole new layer of emotive language onto someone else's perspective.
It takes time for someone to grow into a bike, which is why long term reviews matter more.

I really hope the existence of this bike encourage other brands to also make very high performance crossovers/adventures. Imagine a 1390 SA with the 190 hp SDR engine, a Versys H2 or a Tracer 10. Or even a Transalp 1000 with the Fireblade engine. Stuff like that would be rather nonsensical of course, but still very fun nonetheless. And as a bonus, it would also help in keeping the 1000 cc super sports alive.

@@aligntrex700e I rented XR several times usually for a few days trips. I would say I liked it, but it lacked power for me. I much prefer either very torque LC8 motor on SuperDuke or anything in 200+ hp club. Was bummed about hard luggage initially as i do like the top case option mostly, but later i made my piece with soft luggage, at least for starters, and i am certain there will be options aftermarket or direct retrofit perhaps with standard xr parts. But agreed this was very controversial decision by bmw on this category bike and will cost them customers potentially.

After many sports and naked ICEs, I currently ride a Livewire One, 0-60mph in three seconds. But the truth is the biggest, most powerful bikes are not the ones we ride fastest. I found over the years that the best-handling 600-700cc bikes are the sweet spot for me (Triumph triples, CBR 600rr; etc.). Current HP figures only make sense on the track in most countries. Certainly in the Paris region, there would be no where for miles I could exploit more than 30% of that beast.
