I think Terry Bozio said, maybe in the drummers of Frank Zappa series, that he did read it off a sheet, in front of Zappa, first time around and nailed it by the third attempt! Great performance / reaction as usual.
I love that Dweezyl keeps this music (live) alive and he is very talented and does an awesome job. All I miss is Frank's unique voice and stage presence. But go on Dweezyl your doing good.
Vinnie Colaiuta played it from memory in his audition... but Zappa wasn't thrilled by that, because Zappa put SHEET MUSIC in front of Vinnie... and Vinnie was faking reading it because he knew it... so Zappa stopped him and put a DIFFERENT piece of music in front of him...(Vinnie said it was Pedro's Dowry, but he remembered incorrectly, because it was actually Moe and Herb's Vacation) and when Vinnie played that correctly Zappa stopped him and said "OKAY...so you CAN read music." and then... after trying out another bunch of drummers... he gave Vinnie the job.
Good reaction and astute observation. Being a life long Zappa fan, when he passed, I knew there was going to be misc. stuff from his vault, but I also suspected that if it were really excellent then Zappa would have put it out when he was alive. So, I thought, OK, it's over. But his son and the band put on incredible shows so to some extent he brought his father back to life. And oddly enough, he got nothing but crap from the Zappa estate for doing so.
Magnifique !

The whole Black Page first appears on "Zappa in New York" released 1978 recorded live in 1976.

I think Terry's rodeo is still busy getting all the gear in the truck.
Zappa University Alumni
Remember Dec 4 when he passed away
Steve Vai lol
That's why you had to be an incredible musician to be in Frank's band.
Dweezil sounds a lot like Frank did before he was thrown from the stage.
The joke used to be why are there no Zappa cover bands? because they can't! Not anymore..
