This was recorded around the time of One Size Fits All (early 1975), along with The Adventures of Greggary Peccary.
Zappa had someone transcribe his guitar solo and then had horn players double it.

The record company wouldn't pay for the multi player ensemble that Zappa envisaged so hence 'Low Budget'.

His guitar solo is so melodic that he can transcribe and orchestrate it as composition in itself, as if he pre-knew he was going to do it. Genius. Great album.

I bought this album back in 1979 and loved it then as a 13-year-old. The trombone solo was just bliss.
Frank's music runs the gambit in style and quality, from masterful to "he probably shouldn't have recorded it," but in the early goings, he wrote a TON of great instrumental music. Some of my favorite Zappa albums are from that time period: Weasels Ripped My Flesh, Uncle Meat (a virtual Cornucopia of styles and wonderfully crafted tunes), Burnt Weeny Sandwich, Roxy and Elsewhere. From more traditional composed music to jazz, rock, musique concrete, electronic, on and on.
It’s gamut, not gambit
I don't know if anyone has brought this up before, if so please forgive me. One of the things I like about about your FZ videos is that old guys like me remember when FM radio, specifically the non-commercial/college stations usually on the left hand side of the dial were the main source of music media. It was FM before formatting that gave FZ the exposure to enable his tours. At that time it wasn't uncommon to set aside time to just listen to whatever that dj wanted to play. We would spend hours almost daily with the radio because in that time it was the most portable device of the day . Sometimes the djs would have the time to play one of his cuts and discuss it on the phone. That is what I think you guys are providing. We get to catch the tune, get your take on it, and add the internet's comment section where it seems civility, and knowledge are respected.

~update~ 8 hours later and I snuck back here and gave it another listen. Well worn path,
and all that. I don't remember giving it 2 listens in one day. I think I picked up some details
that I might not have in the 1st listen. I've listened to this tune maybe 30 times in my life.

If anyone remembers the old Dick Van Patton show 8 is Enough, in one episode you see their shelf of records. The only cover you can see is this one. Or it's Sleep Dirt. I could never subject myself to watch that show again to remember which one. Some prop person had a wicked sense of humor. Thanks for this.

It's almost as if this is a soundtrack to some kind of weird cartoon that we can't see but have to visualize. I never find myself not being totally immersed in his instrumentals. I thought I was a Zappa head sitting in the 1969 Bluebird bus listening to Lumpy Gravy/We're Only In It For The Money and Joe's Garage with Frank completely freaking us out. "How did you get your water so black"

The bus had cut up beer cans hanging from fishing line, cut into fan blades turning from the heat of the candle 🕯 casting huge rotating cogs on the ceiling while headless ponies hung as well with Crash Test Dummies hanging as tool...sick good times with that gleam in the eye.

Ah, you too huh, I thought I was alone. I always love the intro to RDNZL after Revised music for electric guitar and low budget orchestra ends.
Agreed, and I was bummed when the CD separated the two tracks with "Lemme Take You To The Beach." Lather did rectify this later and added little extra snippets.
This is clearly a piece do be listened to over and over again to get all the ingredients, and I love it for the past forty odd years

This piece flows into another masterpiece called RDNZL, which was a concert staple... This piece was written also for Violin and Low Budget Orchestra and was recorded by Jean Luc Ponty...

Isn't this a beautiful palette? FZ was an amazing expressionist painter. It's a chamber orchestra, hence the low budget
A rock chamber orchestra is a perfect description. Incredible how the melody transitions so smoothly to all of these instruments. All of the fantastic rhythms perfectly in unison. It is virtually impossible. But there it is!

Frank could do anything and he did. There was no one like him.
What I like about it is that it is not made to be beautiful, to please someone, to become famous or to make money with it, but only made because he can and wants to compose it.
I also like it because it creates this certain mood and surprises.

Been a while since I listened to this, but it definitely has a Zappa sound.
I would't recommend this to someone new to Zappa, but I think you guys are ready for it!

Funnily enough, a friend of mine introduced me to Zappa when Zoot Allure was released, and I really didn't like it, I thought it was just silly, then he bought Studio Tan, and who knows why, I liked Greggary Peckary, recorded it on tape, then went in England for one year with this cassette. When I came back, I was a Zappa-head ! And yes, I feel this is incomplete without RDNZL !

This is always best when followed by RDNZL. But the definitive version is performed by Jean-Luc Ponty, Ian Underwood, and George Duke on Ponty’s King King album, titled “Music for Electric Violin & Low Budget Orchestra.”
Hi guys. Great reaction again. You are correct: The guitar he’s playing is a Ovation nylon-string acoustic-electric, DI into recording console. Part of the solo was transcribed by Bruce Fowler (trombone) and quadtupled overdubbed by him at variuos speeds. Glad you liked it, even it’s not his best effort. I find it a bit fragmentated, and thought you might not dig it too much. As the other guy mentioned, FZ wanted a 97-piece orchestra for the 1970 violin version. A 11-piece orchestra was okayed, so there you go.

Hopefully somebody will request the original or anything else from the record "Jean Luc Ponty plays the Music of FZ" recorded for Blue Note in 1969. Most folks dont realize it's actually a Zappa album, just under Ponty's name. Some beautiful arrangements on there

And his "Low Budget" adjective refers sarcastically to the price to commission a real orchestra to play his music... And I do believe that was an Ovation acoustic guitar with a pickup played through a DI into the recording console... and yes, with nylon strings! Good catch!... Zappa played the solo and then had his good buddy Bruce Fowler play the harmony parts transcribed for the trombone...
No, it wasn't a matter of pulling out a cassette,all the parts are within on music paper or manuscript if you will, for musicians to read which Frank was able to do since he was 14 by going to the library studying books on orchestral notation for every instrument, no conservatory university training just creative genius for modern classical composition 20th century and beyond.
The low budget orchestra was a dig at the record company I believe who wouldn’t pay for a full orchestra
There has already been a mention of the Jean Luc Ponty album King Kong. The second side is mostly Music for Electric Violin and Low Budget Orchestra. I don’t know which came first but I think I prefer that although they are both great pieces. There’s some great melodies in there and some amazing rhythm and tempo changes. Talking of King Kong you guys need to do that if you haven’t already. The version recorded at the BBC is IMO the best if you ignore the bizarre camera work

I'm very happy that you are getting into the classical side of Zappa. It's going to take you a while to warm up to this stuff. It's not what most people are used to. The "low budget" refers to the amount of money spent on musicians... Bruce Fowler is playing all the horns and there is only a quartet and a piano besides that... not really an orchestra. Origanally the song was for a small chamber orchestra of about 17 peices and Jean Luc Ponty on violin and it was named "Music for electric violin and low budget orchestra" here he changed it to guitar therefore it was "revised". In an interview Frank stated that almost everything that Bruce does on the guitar /horn unison part near the end of the song should not be possible. In the interview Frank says that Bruce played notes that are way way WAYYYYYYYYY too high for a trumpet and trombone... and he bends note on the trumpet (wtf???) AND he does sextuplets on the trombone.... folks... I guarantee you... that's not normal.

Title-wise, I wondered whether the revisions(if there were indeed any) were precipitated by budgetary constraints or artistic choices.
Early on, some of those choices found my head wandering a stereotypical urban German tourist destination nabe, (never been there, my son spent several years in Koln/Cologne)diverse, fun, possibly dangerous if you took a wrong turn; luckily, our guide is an Italian(?)-American mad genius, between whose ears I spent the rest of the piece in relative safety(lol) and relaxed comfort
One of my favorite pieces , Jean Luc Ponty , Ruth Underwood , and so many more great musicians. I think that Terry Bozzio is on drumset in this song too. What a masterpiece. This is one of the albums Warner Brothers released without Frank's permission. This album , Orchestral Favorites and Sleep Dirt is why Zappa sued Warner Brothers. Not Frank's album titles or Approved artwork. The song names are Franks

Studio Tan was released without Frank's permission in an attempt by the studio to get some bucks during the falling out of Herb Cohen with Frank. While it's all definitely compelling and fascinating music, when Frank learned about the released albums for the first time in an interview, he was angry and asked that fans not purchase that album. It's all a mix of music from the previous years and some from the late 60's.
Frank was very proud of The Adventures of Greggery Peccary too, I heard him talking about it in an interview. Despite all the controversy, glad Studio Tan was released, as a kid this was (and still is) some of the best music ever!
Actually Frank was pissed off that they wouldn't release 3 record set, Lather, so he said fine, and dropped off the 3 single albums to fulfill his contract and get released from Warner Bros. clutches..
@@DWHarper62 Lather was supposed to be a 4 record set, thats 8 sides he had his nerves.
Originally, Zappa was tired of his deal with his current label but he was told he couldn't end the contract before he delivered 4 albums. In response to that, he made Lather, which was gonna be a 4 disc album. The record label refused to sell it like this citing a couple of reasons and the work went split into separate albums.

I always took the title as referring to the orchestra as budget, was a humorous way to say it didn’t cost much to hire a very small orchestra with only a few members.
I always thought that Greggery Peccary was a special gem on this album - highly recommend

Great stuff. As with some other instrumental pieces this one felt like a soundtrack to an old Warner bros cartoon. Maybe some cowboy critters skulking about the wilds of Utah or something. Ironic given Zappa's antipathy to the record producing arm of that company

okay, I think from your eclectic backlog that you will appreciate:
Band: "Sons Of Champlin" - Album: 'Loosen Up Naturally' 1969 - Song: 'Get High'; after that pick any song on the album.
"The Sons of Champlin are an American rock band, from Marin County in the San Francisco-Bay area, formed in 1965. They are one of the 1960s San Francisco bands, along with Jefferson Airplane, the Grateful Dead and Moby Grape."
If you are interested in another case of underappreciated 'san francisco sound' greatness, may I point you to the band/album "It's a Beautiful Day" 1969 and the songs 'Hot Summer Day', 'Wasted Union Blues'...then you'll be ready for 'Time Is'. (they had a hit with "White Bird" but you can wait on that)
Guitarist Terry Haggerty was great on "Loosen Up.." especially the solos on "Things Are Gettin' Better" and "Freedom".

So many thoughts here. First you mentioned you might not have that many Zappa reactions. I’m pretty sure you’ve done more than anyone else by more than a little. Regarding this piece of music, I submitted a paid request to another reactor for this song and the reactor disliked it so much he didn’t even put the response on YT. But that was my fault because it was only his 2nd Zappa reaction. My request was a bit too zealous. But you guys are well seasoned in Zappa now, so in terms of timing for this reaction, it’s appropriate. All that said in my opinion, this is piece of music draws the line between a casual Zappa listener and a real fan. For me, it’s essential. Like almost all Zappa you have to listen to the piece numerous times to understand it. In this case, about a third of the way in you’ll start to hear Frank setting up the drop where the sax mirrors Frank through the lead. It’s subtle. That’s the beauty of it, at least for me. If I ever see another reaction to this song on YT I’ll be shocked. Great reaction to an amazing deep track!

Yeah there's another song where they do some nylon guitar and it's just two guitars and the guy playing with Zappa he says some really funny at the end I will give it away but it's pretty cool yeah I'm guessing redondel is the next song right after this one I could be wrong I have to research it but it has this really cool riff right at the start and it just keeps getting faster and faster and there goes into this more mellow thing and oh man yeah you'll have to react to that one for sure I used to listen to this music when I was no I just got out of high school and I Got This Record her actually I was probably in high school and I brought this with my collection and had a whole box of vinyl and when I drove back see my dad in the Midwest I would play This Record and it was like the Autumn and I just remember it's just it felt right listening to this music in the fall and it's ironic that that's what you guys are doing yeah I got so much enjoyment out of sleep dirt and Studio tan they were supposed to make another record which they did later on Frank made the album but Warner Brothers wouldn't release it all together it was they just released the single records and Frank got into a dispute over that okay brooklynites if I ever get to Nueva York I will definitely want to come see you guys perform

I hate this album.I LOVE Frank Zappa.I think he amused himself by putting out music that any "normal"person would think is awful. He knew it..and he would think your a kiss ass to like it or a musical genius to understand it

I always liked it. No need to understand it. Lots of beautiful parts here and other songs on Studio Tan. Greggery Peccary on the other hand I always had a hard time with. But others like it. I don't at all think Frank thought the way you say.
