  • Bach 6.5AL, 5GS, 5G, 5G large bore trombone mouthpieces.
    Not a 6.5AL with a 5G rim.
    The rim on the 5GS is the same width as a 5G.
    The rim shape is more like a 6.5AL in comfort.
    Cup contour and shoulder are the same as a 5G but not as deep, yet deeper than a 6.5AL. Depth from the rim to the shoulder is between the 5G and the 6.5AL.
    Drill size and taper are the same as a 6.5AL.
    Brighter than a 5G and darker than a 6.5AL

    Helpful 👍🏼
    Been playing a Doug Elliot gold played LT100 rim with F cup and F8 shank for decades. Love the feel of the gold plating, but have never really loved the sound, clarity of articulation.
    Just tried a 5GS and I like the sound better. I’m a little worried that the slightly sharper inner edge of the rim/cup will negatively impact my endurance, but we shall see…

    My all around go to MP in my small bore King is a Bach 7C ( my best sounding MP is an Alliance 6s but it comes with response limitations , I am not a profession trombonist like you 😕) what I want to try is a DW Heritage series in a 7Cs I’ve hear that there’s more vibration because there’s less material in the cup. I think I’d like their flat rim but I’ve hear that response and articulation could be challenging, that said I sure see a lot of them around. With the pandemic in full flight not every retailer will let you demonstrate their inventory . MP’s are so expensive it’s kind of hit and miss if yyou’ll even like it. I’m wondering if you have or any of your channel followers have had experience with the heritage Dennis Wick...btw: great content for us gear heads, you’re so informative and easy to listen to like a nice fm station 😀🎤

      I have a 10CS DW Heritage. I used it for about ten years and liked it a lot. I got a good strong buzz and I liked the flat rim. I did find that the mouthpiece was very demanding of my attention for keeping my articulation together. That is on of the reasons I went back to my old Bach 70's era 11C. When I was playing a lot of big horn ( bass, and Bach 42 or CONN 8-H) it seemed to fit me better but as I went back to primarily playing small tenor with 30's style Society Bands, the fit was no longer as good. I do use it on the alto from time to time. I get a cleaner, less fuzzy sound. I have not tried the 7CS. Let me know how that goes.

    So i have been using a yamah 48 for 10 months or so, i have a yamaha 446g . 525 bore. I have tried the 5g off and on but it is much darker and definately challenging in the high register. I just dont feel like the yamaha 48 is right for me. I recently got a 5gs. How long do you think it will take to adapt from the yamaha 48 to the 5gs. I notice that it is just a little bit darker then the yamaha, but not as dark as the 5g. I also tried the 6 1/2 al but felt it was too small for me. I also feel the 48 is too small, but the 5g too big. I bought the 5gs because it is like you said in the middle of 6 1/2 al and 5g. I am looking for endurance and clarity of notes mainly, plus stability of holding those notes, if you understand what i mean. Thanks for the informative video. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Haha. Another video which adds to the mystic and mystery of the crazy mouthpiece variations. Not sure the trombonists Mozart was writing for would have dreamed of the type of trombone or mouthpiece you suggest is best for that music. Certainly wasn’t a sound Mozart would have heard from a trombone of his era. 😁

    Hey Bryant, I have had a bit of quandary for years with mouthpieces and just moved to the 5G from the 4G and would like to hear your thoughts if possible.
    I play Lead Trombone in an English Champiionship Section Brass Band. This chair is a pig of a seat to fill as you have to be an orchestral symphony player, sometimes a jazz player, and also play all night at the top of the chord and the instrument is never off your face. Overall the tenor seats in an top class English Brass Band require wide bore instruments and I play a 40 year old Elkhart 88H and the 5G helps with the high stuff a little bit with very little detriment to the sound.
    I would still like a little more help upstairs though and wondered about the 5GS. Do you think that the 5GS with the smaller throat would help playing high for long periods - and what about the possibility of switching from the 5G to the 5GS for different programs? As they are the same rim size would that be fairly easy to do or could you foresee any problems with that? - I would appreciate your reply - and anybody else reading this - ALL ideas are good - some just more good than others! 🙂

      The 5G certainly would make things easier than playing on a four and a 5GS would brighten things up even more. My issue with the 5G S is that it can be a bit splashy. I find that I lose weight of sound and breadth of tone on the 5G. S. Sometimes if I get a little excited, it can become splotchy and very bright. It takes a lot of self-control after moving so much air through larger Mouthpieces to be able to play on the GS without getting overly bright, thin, toned and splattery. It would be worth looking into if you feel that you can keep yourself from getting too rambunctious while playing. I find that if I back off and just let the mouthpiece do the heavy lifting things work out much better. when I’m playing in a group I don’t notice the shortcomings of my sound as much as when I try to practice at home. It can be so frustrating to hear myself sounding so thin that I actually will stop playing that mouthpiece and go back to my regular mouthpiece. The danger is that if you do not practice on the 5G S it is hard to stay in control without getting barkish and thin sounding.
      When I do practice up on the GS and back off on my air and let the mouthpiece cut through the sound. I find that I can play softer than I think I is necessary while still being heard very well in front of the ensemble.

      I use a 5G Artisan as my regular mouthpiece in my Bach 47. It projects well and feels centered with more brilliance on the sound than the standard 5G.

      @@mrbtadashi Thanks for your thoughts again Bryant. I have just ordered an Artisan 5GS so I will definitely let you know how I go on.. I am still wondering about the Artisan 5GL and wonder if that might be the 1/2 way point between the 5G aand 5GS (but it wasn't in stock) - Anyway thanks again for comunicating and I'll post back when I have tried the Artisan 5GS - Should be interesting to compare anyway, 👍 Russ

      Hi again, I played on the 5gs artisan for a couple of weeks and it's too lightweight.. if you put any decent amount of air through it it breaks up.. probably ok if you're blowing straight into a microphone but not any good for a live brass band or orchestra. In the meantime I have been getting stuck into the standard 5G and that seems to improve week on week so I think I'm going to stick with that one. It really does make a superb sound on my Conn 88h. Thanks very much for the input, Russ 👍

      Trevor Sikorski I play a 5G on my classical set up. Both the Bach 36 and my Bach 47. It is a difficult mistress. The flat rim and medium bite make it a very immovable set on the embouchure. The 5G is the standard by which all others are judged. It is an icon but if you have trouble with it, there are many variants that you can look at. For me, I stick with the classic even with her faults. I do use the 5G Artisan in my 47 as I feel it has better focus especially when I’m playing loud, centered and bright. The 5G doesn’t work for me on any horn smaller than my Bach 36.

    • @mrbtadashi
      @mrbtadashi  4 года назад +1

      Trevor Sikorski the 5 is an odd duck for me. I don’t own one but I tried a few over the years. It has better focus than the G size but seemed a bit too bright for modern legit but might work well in quintet where that isn’t as much of an issue. Still didn’t work in a “jazz” horn (.503 and smaller).

    Hi Bryant,
    I'm an intermediate high school trombone player and I wanted to ask for some advice on mouthpieces. I haven't really thought about the effect my mouthpiece had on my playing until this year and I wanted to know what I should go to next. I have been using my beginner Bach 12C for the past 7 years and I don't really know which size/shape would be the best and most appropriate upgrade.

    • @mrbtadashi
      @mrbtadashi  7 лет назад +2

      Cybernoid200 it all depends on what kind of music you're going to play, and the kind of horn you're going to use. I'm glad to give you some advice so let me know a little more about what you'll be playing like orchestra or wind ensemble, jazz band or marching band and what kind of horn you'll be playing like large bore or small bore trombone.

      Bryant Byers I'm in the exact same situation as this guy, and I just have one question. Is the diameter of the shank the same on the 5GS the same as on a 12C?

    • @mrbtadashi
      @mrbtadashi  7 лет назад

      Jake 3752 yes, the 5GS can be purchased with the same shank to fit a small bore trombone that uses a 12C but it is a going to sound funny and play flat if the horn is smaller than .525. When you order or go to buy a 5GS you will need to specify a small shank if that's what you want.

      5G is hard to play in a .500 bore horn. 12C is a drastic change from a 6 1/2 al. I’d say no larger than a 7C and no smaller than an 11c. The direction of bigger or smaller depends on your comfort and what style of playing you want to do. If you’re doing well on the 61/2, you may just want to stick with it until you have a better idea of what style you want to play. Sorry for the long reply.

      I just purchased for a low price a used King 606 horn to be used as a secondary instrument. I found that an old Yamaha 48 small bore mouthpiece that I had kicking around works good with it (I also have a 5g, but that's for my usual large bore horn). ..hope this helps...George, Canada
