My guess as to the reason why the "OFf" display in the climate control is the way it is, is that the last digit "f" is responsive to the temperature when the A/C is on, for example, "79f" or "26c" as in "Fahrenheit" and "Celsius". I guess Porsche thought it would look even weirder if the degree type was a capital letter, for example, "79F". I'm wondering what would display if the weather were over 100F (37C).

By the way, I was told this by a driving instructor at the Porsche Driving /Experience Center in Atlanta. It’s more of a track thing, if you’re tracking the car and come into a hairpin turn then you usually go into first to keep the power out of the turn. If I put the car in sport + mode it automatically slams it into first even if I’m just driving normal. I’ve had a a lot of people ask me about this but I think it’s people that don’t race the cars or have never driven a Porsche on the track.
dont forget reason 3, this car is made for european roads which are perfect, ofcourse u will feel more bumps in the US. corvettes are american and made for your roads, but they feel loose in EU roads because its not as stiff as the 718. so yea depends on the country
I have a 2015 Boxster GTS. It has pasm and the 18 way seats. I am 5’ 9” and it is comfortable. However i did swap out the 20” wheels for 19” wheels, sacrifice a bit on performance but enhance comfort. A three hour drive is fine, very comfortable.
1st gear clunk is not normal, mine doesn't have it. Yours has a bad manual syncro mesh plate that's damaged in 1st. Dealer's BS'ing you cause they don't wanna do a $25,000 warranty tranny swap.
just 3 mins. we listen you gonna will say what you hate 5 thing about your Porsche, yes i got my popcorn and i will sacrifice all my days to watch your beautiful video. thank you :) I'm just kidding.
Does the ride quality have anything to do with the large rims? I have a 718 Cayman with 20 inch rims and I have a feeling that is what is causing the issue with the ride quality. There is not enough tire cushion between the wheel and the road, because of the super low profile tires.
1) OFf is German ingenuity. 2) 718 should be manual transmission 3) Get H&R springs and 18" wheels 4) Replace the tach dial with aftermarket 5) Sport Plus seats are a must option (or aftermarket SPARCO)
As someone that drives a manual everyday for 15 years… you never down shift to 1st gear. Once you are completely stopped…. You start over in 1st gear. Rolling stop signs are always done in 2nd. Im guessing your shifting before you are completely stopped, kind of like when people go into “drive” as they are going backwards from “reverse” ….. both are terrible for the car. I have been to a porsche and bmw driving day on racetracks. Why buy an automatic and not utilize it…. The car is a better driver than you. It knows when to shift. The transmissions are amazing and can shift faster than I ever could shift my 6 speed. I just don’t understand the in between bullshit . I’m guessing it is for pro drivers that are actually smarter than the car. I just would never use paddles or an automatic shifter .
Really, you never downshift into 1st? ... Mmm, if you were driving a 718 GTS 4.0 and get to 45 in 1st gear, knowing the power comes above 4,000 rpm, wouldn't you want to drop it to first approaching a 25mph corner? ... or when you're trying to trickle into a steep driveway at an angle, wouldn't you find it advantageous then?
@@justinmaccreery2490 Dawg i’m driving to the grocery store and work….. so no haha 😂. I drive faster than most people during everyday driving. I’ve owned 3 series mainly(1 old e28 5 series). My uncle had the Porsche and was how I got invited to that track day lol.
Something to add to the list is the driver’s cup holder final position. Who thought it would be a good idea to place a cup with condensation over electronics?!? I can only use tumblers; that way it doesn’t form condensation and drip. Otherwise, I love my car. Thanks for the video.
Man, you really have zero issues with this well built sports car, probably the best in the world, when you compare $ to $. I have a Cayman Base and have driven from SC to Orlando a few times and the ride was good for me and my wife. You need to find another type of car, imo!
The difficulty in resetting the Maintenance light after oil change unless you have an expensive scan tool. Also there is no dipstick to check and look at the condition of the oil.
1) who cares 2) Get a manual 3) listen to the sound of the engine to shift 4) get coilovers which you can adjust stiffness from track to street 5) buy race seats that will fit you like a glove
Make sure you get some dampers on there to absorb the impact so your rear end doesn’t hurt as much when you lower the car even more. It’s a sports car. Yourgoing to end up experiencing some back pain. Buy some comforters that will help solve the problem!
@@zryhmer how’s the lumbar support with the 2-way Sport Plus seats. is there any at all? concerned about the lower back, without having any adjustability
@@zryhmer yes, of course. but I was wondering if the 2-way had any lumbar support at all. unfortunately the closest P dealer is 4 hours away, so can’t just pop in and try them out lol
The seats that have factory cooling are less comfortable. I think there is a plastic manifold of sorts in the seat. don't get the cooled seats unless you really need them.
PASM has a comfort setting that makes the ride quality much softer. But your right, you can also make the car stiffer in the sport setting with PASM. My car doesn’t have the option so it’s stiff all the time.
As far as im aware All duall clutch transmissions have a clunky first gear..ie-volkswagon/audi/vag,, nissan/gtr, porsche, The only way to too eliminate the lower gear clunk is by shifting with more load on the gears....(j have found if i want too have a clean shift down to first or second by downshifting at either a higher rpm or by braking harder(more load) and that tends too eliminate clunk 100%///or in the cars auto shift mode case it will slow down the gear change(release the clutch slower. (Try understanding that it is 100% just a manual that is automated.) if u shift fast in a manual at a low load its very clunky. But if u shift slow its much smoother
Sorry but you sound whiny. My PDK also clunks slightly (but only in first when downshifting- auto or manual) and it’s not a big deal. I have the standard manually adjustable seats and they are very comfortable. They’re also easier to get in and out of because I can slide it all the way back quickly to get out.
The first gear clunk is probably the speed protector so you can't put it in there by accident at high speed. I've noticed that on a few cars and my BMW 1200 GS motorcycle.
Yeah I’ve heard from other 981 owners that the gearbox does that even by itself. I think they refined the 718 PDK a bit more but it still happens. As long as it’s not broken then I’m happy, I’ll put up with a first gear clunk because the car is absolutely amazing.
These are all spot on. I have the same spec/color. The OFf is silly. The 2nd to 1st shift definitely has a "clunk". For me, the little cubbies behind the seats take near acrobatic like skills to get into. Also, my auto start/stop seems to always be disabled (which I like), but makes me wonder if a previous owner programed it out. Otherwise its a great car! Great videos!
Glad to hear I’m not the only one, happy you liked the video. I’m doing the APR tune next week and that has the auto start/stop disabling feature, I’m looking forward to that the most! 😂
@@DriveMore718 you said its when you downshift to first right? When I'm showing down and coasting to a stop I typically put the car in neutral. You can do this by pulling on both paddle shifters at the same time. I'm rarely in first more that a few seconds.
6:54 PASM doesn't have a softer setting than your car currently has. It has the same setting (but actually harder because the car is lower) and an even stiffer setting. American cars all seem to have squishy suspension compared to European cars, frankly. It's an actual sportscar, you're not meant to be comfortable. Go faster.
You’re totally right about PASM. I just wish the car had softer suspension setting. It’s too harsh on the roads in my region. Rented one and just couldn’t do it. On smooth roads, no problem.

I've driven manual vehicles for over 30 years and never thought to shift down to 1st gear while stopping or slowing down. Like why?
It’s more of a track thing, if you’re tracking the car and come into a hairpin turn then you usually go into first to keep the power out of the turn. If I put the car in sport + mode it automatically slams it into first even if I’m just driving normal. I’ve had a a lot of people ask me about this but I think it’s people that don’t race the cars or have never driven a Porsche on the track.
@@DriveMore718 gotcha! I'll have one soon enough. 😉
take a shot every time he says "seven eighteen cayman" and "PASM"
you can see when using the thermostat the second f is also used for Fahrenheit which is why it is permanently small
dont forget reason 3, this car is made for european roads which are perfect, ofcourse u will feel more bumps in the US. corvettes are american and made for your roads, but they feel loose in EU roads because its not as stiff as the 718. so yea depends on the country
Just felt that this guy is just trying to show off his car and Give stupid reasons that he don’t like about the car totally bullshit.
Its pronounced Por-shuh. TWO SYLABLES. Stopped watching after 2nd mispronunciation.
Por-shuh.
Por-shuh.
Go ask a German.
1st gear clunk is not normal, mine doesn't have it. Yours has a bad manual syncro mesh plate that's damaged in 1st. Dealer's BS'ing you cause they don't wanna do a $25,000 warranty tranny swap.
As far as the seats, I have the Sports Plus seats. They are very comfortable for short and long drives.
do you have the seat ventilation? heard they’re more stiff, than without.
The 2way adjustable seats are the most comfortable ones as I’ve seen it confirmed by another review
just 3 mins. we listen you gonna will say what you hate 5 thing about your Porsche, yes i got my popcorn and i will sacrifice all my days to watch your beautiful video. thank you :) I'm just kidding.
Does the ride quality have anything to do with the large rims? I have a 718 Cayman with 20 inch rims and I have a feeling that is what is causing the issue with the ride quality. There is not enough tire cushion between the wheel and the road, because of the super low profile tires.
Sure, if you want better confort you should to buy a small wheels and more tire cushion.
seats also have an impact. Sports plus seats provide more cushion than the standard two way/14 way seats.
@@jazu_tv big wheels look cool though
1) OFf is German ingenuity. 2) 718 should be manual transmission 3) Get H&R springs and 18" wheels 4) Replace the tach dial with aftermarket 5) Sport Plus seats are a must option (or aftermarket SPARCO)
no pdk better faster and more torque.........
The 20" tires are very noisy, especially on a long trip on concrete roads that are a little beat up.
Just give it a little rev and it will slip right into first. There's no synchro
2:51 - Well, I guess you have to throw this car straight in the trash can, haha!
Your comment actually made me laugh 😂 thanks for watching!
The difficulty in resetting the Maintenance light after oil change unless you have an expensive scan tool. Also there is no dipstick to check and look at the condition of the oil.
I’ve never downshifted into first in my life.
Hmm, and he’s not coming after you? He must have a thing about women understanding the concept of how a manual works;) lol
1) who cares 2) Get a manual 3) listen to the sound of the engine to shift 4) get coilovers which you can adjust stiffness from track to street 5) buy race seats that will fit you like a glove
Sorry about the phone, probably small "f" cus digital display for 2 numbers for temp, small number for half degrees maybe? ... like 98.5 degrees
Make sure you get some dampers on there to absorb the impact so your rear end doesn’t hurt as much when you lower the car even more. It’s a sports car. Yourgoing to end up experiencing some back pain. Buy some comforters that will help solve the problem!
The Super Sport Plus seats are fantastic. Way more comfortable than my S3.
I currently have an 8Y S3. nappa seats are amazing! do you have the 2-way or 18? and are they ventilated? staring the 718 ordering process soon!
@@stealthhtm23 I had the upgraded S3 seats with the quilted leather. They were good, but the two way Super Sport Plus seats are on another level.
@@zryhmer how’s the lumbar support with the 2-way Sport Plus seats. is there any at all? concerned about the lower back, without having any adjustability
@@stealthhtm23 for me, it’s good, but I sit more upright. The lumbar support in the 12 or 18 way is adjustable.
@@zryhmer yes, of course. but I was wondering if the 2-way had any lumbar support at all. unfortunately the closest P dealer is 4 hours away, so can’t just pop in and try them out lol
I love my 718S and I have NEVER had a problem with the seat! Wow.
The seats that have factory cooling are less comfortable. I think there is a plastic manifold of sorts in the seat. don't get the cooled seats unless you really need them.
Good video man !!
Thank you man, I appreciate it!
If the seats are completely leather then does that solve it. But all leather is expensive option
Why would you ever think it was okay to manually downshift to 1st?
PASM makes it even harder.
But if u shift slow its much smoother
great video! been between this an m2c and a supra for a while now, but leaning towards a 718! Although this new 400z is quite appealing loool
I can’t wait to buy one
Thanks for the honest review…seats being comfortable is very important to me…I wonder if this is the same
Issue for 911 owners?
Enjoy the car, but it doesn't sound you really do. Its' one criticism after another. It's frankly tedious watching you.
How much you pay for the 718s? Greetings from Peru! 🚀🚀🚀
Never had an issue with the first gear. I would go to have it checked to another dealership because I think they are full of it.
I talked to a few people on the forums and they all seem to have the same issue. What year is your car?
@@DriveMore718 2018.
Boxsters (at least), have always had the OFf display. Enjoy it.
The only thing I don’t like are the cup holders! 😂. I don’t notice anything wrong when down shift to 1st gear!
Porsche engineers hate cup holders. Its an American thing. They didn’t add cup holders to their cars until the early 2000s.
Great review. Even the 718 is just not an adequate GT car. Have you driven the Macan for an extended period?
The little “f” is for Fahrenheit. And the numbers are bigger than the display spot for the “f”.
This video feels similar to saying that your biggest weakness is that you work too much during an interview
The most annoying thing is the owner.
Did you not drive this before buying ?
Do you still own the 718 by any chance? If so I’d like to make a cash offer on it! Thank you for the consideration!
Just wanted to tell everyone he had a porsche hahahaha
Hihi I suggest you try out a m3/m5 if you think that's stiff. Greetings from germany.
Great video! But you never downshift to 1st buddy..
That poor transmission! Lol😩😜☝️
The first gear clunk is probably the speed protector so you can't put it in there by accident at high speed. I've noticed that on a few cars and my BMW 1200 GS motorcycle.
The AC display in my 981 has the small F also.
Weird... must be a heritage thing if Porsche does that on all the cars. I want to go see if the 992 has a small f too.
Porsche is two syllables not one.
Thank you for pointing out proper enunciation lol .. don’t get me started on the 1st gear thing hah
I got the transmission issue like you in first gear in my 2014 Cayman S. Though it does it even when the car shifts.
Yeah I’ve heard from other 981 owners that the gearbox does that even by itself. I think they refined the 718 PDK a bit more but it still happens. As long as it’s not broken then I’m happy, I’ll put up with a first gear clunk because the car is absolutely amazing.
ahhh i dont care im getting one 😂😂😂 nice video tho bro
These are all spot on. I have the same spec/color. The OFf is silly. The 2nd to 1st shift definitely has a "clunk". For me, the little cubbies behind the seats take near acrobatic like skills to get into. Also, my auto start/stop seems to always be disabled (which I like), but makes me wonder if a previous owner programed it out. Otherwise its a great car! Great videos!
Glad to hear I’m not the only one, happy you liked the video. I’m doing the APR tune next week and that has the auto start/stop disabling feature, I’m looking forward to that the most! 😂
i have the sports plus seats with sport tec seats, so comfy
its mkaes me feel better to know that im not the only one who drives with a pillow underneath his back
I'm going to have to see if mine clunks. I've never noticed that.
I'm starting to get a few people telling me that isn't normal, I might have another dealer check it out.
@@DriveMore718 you said its when you downshift to first right? When I'm showing down and coasting to a stop I typically put the car in neutral. You can do this by pulling on both paddle shifters at the same time. I'm rarely in first more that a few seconds.
What year? I found out it's an automatic tranny at minute 5. Then he asks for a "subscribe". Ya. No.
i changed my mind about thisbcar:)
How’s the manual transmission in this style car?????
your seats make you off your car every one hour and that is a good thing.
The first gear is for acceleration and NOT downshifting. You'll mess up the transmission.
