He got flat tires in 2 tires on a road trip. The tire store did not have those specific tires in stock. He waited 2 days in a 100$ a night hotel. Then the tires alone where like 500 each.
Then the hotel did not have a charging station- he literally has to have a diesel powered flat bed - tow him to a charging station. Another 100 bucks. At least.

@@RxPharmer the correct, manufacturer recommended tires are special tires with low rolling resistance, higher wear resistance and higher load ratings. Any one can put the wrong tires on their car. But your new, cheap tires will wear out faster than the specified tires due to the load and higher torque of the electric motor. In the end, it STILL costs you more. I paid 600 for 4 new tires, the correct ones, for my 30 year old truck and they last years. So tires for your compact car cost you $200 more than the huge tires for my old truck. lol Yup, you're saving up a storm.

My compact car does 0-60 in 3 seconds flat and your truck probably gets there in about 12 seconds, so yes, I need a tire than can handle that, but it doesn't have to be expensive. @bobroberts2371 No, not all of them. For example, I drive a practical pickup truck. It's a 1970s model, gets 32 mpg, weighing 2140lbs and having 90hp makes it just right for 99.99% the tasks at hand, an impressive payload of about it's own weight depending on what country it was sold in. It's little teeny 13-inch pizza cutter tires are a fraction of the size of most EV tires and last beyond warranteed miles often 65k miles. Its initial footprint was small, and it has lasted a lifetime, showing no signs of slowing down, it could be maintained indefinitely, just like we see old military aircraft, for example.
But a Ram TRX, f150 raptor, or anything with excessive plastics, size, hp, tq, weight, tire size, or luxury is a waste of resources, ev or ice.
A practical Ford Ranger sized ev truck with standardized, easily swappable, and maintainable battery banks is completely within our technological abilities and manufacturing capabilities. For some reason, they'd rather sink untold dollars into manufacturing 1000 HP gigantic SUV's and trucks we don't have the grid capacity for. In my opinion, just like this whole reply, for electric vehicles to be successful, they need to downsize dramatically and abandon luxury performance electric vehicles.

Need to have a backup car as it will be in the shop for Months due to Severe lack of mechanics. Severe lack of charging stations where you can't charge them. This is NOT overheating. These are lithium ion batteries, the new ones are... you guessed it, lithium ion batteries. The ones in the standard range since 2019 are LFP lithium ion batteries which have 30-50% LESS energy density and inaccurate charge level indication, so they are actually much worse than these 2012 batteries. But this is done in order to remove cobalt dependency which is linked to exploitation of children.
If you take Lithium Ion batteries and keep them properly stored and topped up to 50% for 10 years, you will see them start to degrade and fail, even if there was no overheating. That's just the nature of Lithium Ion. Try taking out that old phone that hasn't been used in 10 years and see it in action. It may work, but you try making a call and watch it switch off with 50% charge remaining. This is worse in cars that are often kept outside for months/years exposed to the elements.
Every few years they come out and say "we've solved it, it was X", this time it's overheating. But no, until we can find something other than Lithium Ion (and there's nothing on the horizon), energy storage is going to remain the biggest challenge for EVs. Renewable biofuels may just be the best option but that's a good decade away too.

Everyone who actually keeps their cell phone for a long time knows this. Over time the phone looses capacity on a charge. Eventually the whole phone, which was not cheap in the first place, has to be replaced because the batteries are not removable. How did people think EV cars would not end up like cell phones?

I’m not sure people would purchase an EV, if they fully understood where, and how, cobalt is mined. Cobalt is a critical component used in all rechargeable batteries, phones, pads, PC’s and so on. Cobalt has been used in this manner for some time, but since the move to EV’s, beginning in 2012, demand for cobalt has increased exponentially. The Katanga region in the Democratic Republic of the Congo is the richest source of cobalt in the world. If one is familiar with the Belgian colonization under King Leopold ll, it’s not a leap to imagine the same brutal exploitation of the Congolese repeating. First the Ivory, then then the rubber, then the palm oil was, and now the cobalt will be taken from them. The Japanese seem to be finding a solution to carbon emissions by utilizing hydrogen. I don’t know..the jury is still out on the true cost of these vehicles.

    • @jimmurphy5355

Cobalt is being phased out of lithium ion batteries that used to use it, and was never used at all in lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries. LFP batteries are safer, cheaper and longer lasting than the more energy dense lithium ion type. So they are becoming the main type used in mid-range EVs. No cobalt…

The problem is that the wealthy, powerful, influential, and narcissistic control everything. That's why electric vehicles were pushed in the first place. Let someone else incur all of that risk with their hard-earned money, then wait until the kinks are ironed out to get an EV for yourself. Generally speaking, the last few years of an old technology are almost always better than the first few years of a new technology.

The lithium mining is making African children rich, and the batteries are making Elon Musk and China rich, and the batteries can’t be recycled, making recycling companies rich. And let’s not forget about towing companies getting rich in the winter towing EVs to charging stations. It’s hard to believe that global warming hasn’t completely stopped with all this incredible technology we have.

Your Comment is rare and most positive. When an EV battery Pack begins to fail, the battery is modular. The problem may just be a single Cell (in Series) that greatly affects the battery Life. A Qualified Technician can identify a particular faulty Cell - and replace it! We need more Technicians around the world that can do this work, and this will alleviate the issues and high costs associated with Full battery Pack Replacement. There are many small companies who specialize in renovating EV battery Packs already. I am not a believer in super-charging any LiFe Po Battery Pack, and it is much kinder for the EV battery to slow charge overnight.

If you had listened to the other 65 minutes of what I said, you would have heard a completely different story. I have not commented on this so far because the result of the interview painted a negative perspective. I only allowed them to come here if it was not anti-EV or anti-Elon. I am not Pro EV. However, I am saving money driving a Model Y every day. I have saved $600 plus dollars a month after I parked my F150. No regrets. The only EV I would buy would be a Tesla. They are light years ahead in technology, and most importantly, Tesla has parts for the original 2008 Roadster to now. Yes we have 57 of the 2450 here in multiple buildings. We buy, sell, rebuild, restore them and rebuild the batteries. None of the other manufacturers have parts. We have multiples of every EV made from 2008 to 2017 here. We cannot get parts. The part about throwaway cars was about Mercedes, Fiat, and Toyota EV Rav 4. Somehow, that was edited out. Are EVs for everyone? No. But for city dwellers and commuters who go less than 300 miles daily? Absolutely a great choice. I plug in at home every night and have a full battery every morning. I love my Model Y and do not drive anything else unless necessary.
I am an old-school muscle car guy who has owned many first-gen Camaros with big cams, headers, and loud exhausts. It's in my blood, but my Model Y is where I am today. I bought the extended warranty and will pay for almost nothing for the next 10-12 years. Want an EV? Buy a Tesla. Just look at how quickly Ford abandoned the lighting trucks after sales dipped. Where will those people get parts and services? Ford and others dipped into EVs in the past and left as fast as they came. Look up the Rav4EV. Toyota won't fix them; they come here. Smart EVs is the same. The Fiat 500 E is the same. They all come here. Buy a Tesla

I don't think the EPA factors in the environmental cost of the manufacturing of these vehicles or any vehicles with the EGR type systems that destroy the engine. Causing the vehicle to be scrapped way earlier than it should be. They dropped the life of a diesel from a million miles down to 250k
And with electric vehicles. It's worst because the batteries are very hazardous to the environment
And as far as Americans, it's $1,000 a month payment to ultimately have nothing owned and just have to go back to the company to spend another $1,000 a month at least with the gas vehicle. There's a couple of years with correct maintenance where you don't have to pay anything so you can save for that next big purchase. It's a lease for life

So all in all I don't think lithium batteries is the way to go. At least not here in the USA. Perhaps in a developing country where they could do their initial Network setup with we where you should be pushing EV technology but keep the US cost low because if you bankrupt the USA, you can't help anybody anyway if that's truly your cause, but I don't think that's the politician's cause I think it's corruption and greed
