Eating kitchari (also called khichdi or kitchree) is an important part of Ayurvedic cleansing. This simple dish of rice and dal is easy for our bodies to digest, and helps give our agni (digestive fire) a break from digesting difficult foods. Sneha Raichada, Dean of the Ayurvedic Institute and Wellness & Health Coach, discusses more reasons why Ayurveda recommends eating kitchari during a cleanse.

Why is frozen food not recommended as per Ayurveda? Especially there is lot of published evidence of frozen fruits and vegetables retain most of their nutrients when frozen but all Ayurveda experts still do not recommend using them. Can I know in detail why is it not recommended? And what kind of ailments can it cause?

I have been recommended to eat high protein diets and the Ayurvedic diet recommendations with lots of white rice are really confusing for me. I guess I could just eat during the cleanse and then quit it. Thank you. I love Khichari, your channel and all the content, products you offer.

Hi there! According to Ayurveda, diets are going to look different for everyone based off what their specific constitution is. A great way to find out your constitution would be through taking our Dosha Quiz www.banyanbotanicals.com/info/dosha-quiz/ It's very helpful to know your Doshas to see what foods will help support balance and what foods are aggravating for you. Kitchari is unique in that it is balancing for all doshas. 😊💚

I am a very fit and active person naturally I have a pretty slim physique but a good amount of muscle I work hard for, i find when I do the cleanse it’s not enough protein for my body even when I double the amount of mung daal. I think maybe my portion may be a bit to small as I’ve watched all their videos on the cleanse and the bowls look huge but as I do the cleanse I really try to give my body a good break, meditatively eat and stop when I’m full, i also fallow the guru I likes advice of only eating about the size of what I could fit in both my hands, held together. I do a small bowl but I’ve found even filling it to the top which is more then enough to fill me as well as adding plant based yogurt, tahini into the equation and even just plenty of coconut oil I still felt off and noticed significant effects, I’d be very cold which I know as a sign for me is I’m not getting enough calories in gen (burning it all up) as well as my muscles gets much smaller so again still not enough protein. I thought it might be not enough fluids but I drink plenty! I even one time tried to add in protein oats as the breakfast and that helped but did not work in the end. I also wonder if the simple carb of white basmati rice is a shock to my system on the account of me trying to always keep my carbs complex and if I have a simple carbs it’s once in a while or grouped with complex ones and lots of health protein. I know the simple carbs are good for a cleanse because it’s supposed to give you the energy you need but I know there is such thing as oat kitchari (and well any grain really, but I love oats) but I believe they mentioned in another video that being for a specific dosha and I can’t remember I’m going to try it but my suggestion for you I guess would be try a grain that has some protein too if it’s okay for your dosha, like farro or couscous (don’t have if gluten free), or quinoa(gluten free). I do have lots of the later that I’ve yet to use since I never know what to do with it lol so i will try it with quinoa as well since this time of year I tend to do kitchari cleanses out of cravings pretty regularly. My other suggestion would be maybe look into a protein that would help digestion rather then make it work. Perhaps a cultured milk/yogurt. I’m going to attempt to make my own soy for one of the next ones as it’s high protein with lots of vitamins and minerals plus kitchari is so much better with some (plant based) yogurt, cilantro, and lime (I will sprinkle some extra seasoned fennel seeds on top too the perfectiooooon 😍).
I hope you are able to try something that works for you

Thank you for tuning in! Yes, this can definitely still be supportive as all dal is easier to digest.

When you are cleansing, the goal is to eat kitchari for all three meals 😊

How long is the cleansing process?

Hi Stacey! It depends. If you are new to cleansing, we highly recommend choosing a shorter, simpler approach in order to get a feel for how you do with the discipline of a cleanse. You can always graduate to a more in-depth cleanse the next time. Here is an informational article on cleansing 😊

Great question! It depends on your personal preference. The overall structure, length, and depth of a cleanse can all be adapted to support what you are looking for.
