Good stuff, Brian. Context is about more than geographical location. It's also about experience level, goals for your beekeeping endeavor, time of the year, available resources( in equipment, money, space, time, etc). A critically thinking beekeeper would take ideas they value and run them through these filters to determine how the information applies to their full context. A critically thinking teacher may do the same with their audience to determine what to share(and not share).
Hi Brian, thanks for tagging me in your video. :) Since this is a wooden barrel, and you'll have the honey in it for many months, what will you do if it crystalizes? I'm thinking a wooden barrel may be a challenge if you need to reliquify that honey :) I hope it all goes well for you.
My plan is to use my bee blanket warmer at intervals to wram it. If needed, I'll go to plan B, which i haven't figured out just yet. I'm hoping that there isn't too much that crystallizes. We'll see come Jan 31st. .
Started my beekeeping journey beginning of 2020 theres definitely 1,001 ways to do it. Everyone does it a little different. If it works for them thats all that matters. Happy Holidays Friend 🍯🐝
I'd love to see you hit 5k subs by the time we get to the conference in Jan. So awesome to see your success. I know I started watching you when you had maybe 500 subs. Great content Brian, as always.
Man, that'd be great but I don't think i'll hit that mark by January. Appreciate all the support Thomas. . . And you know if my wife and I make it the Key West, we're looking you up.
Thanks for sharing the bourbon barrel trick. Haven't seen that before. Good points on the "rant". I am one of those new content providers and I really strive to educate what I have learned from most of the channels/beekeepers you mentioned. Without you guys, I would have never made it this far. Thanks for your sharing!!!
Have to take the hood with the bad. Pick and choose what will work for you from each one. Some people can’t sort through the riff raff. Great video Brian. Hard to figure out this weather 70 in November, wish it would just get cold and stay there.
You and me both, just get cold and stay there. I was counting today and I'm at 7 buckets of 2:1 that i've used already. 15 colonies and 35 gallons taken. I guess they'll all be heavy. Appreciate you watching.
Bourbon Barrel Honey? Wow. Oh, btw, I have told you Brian that you are my favorite RUclipsr, right? Yes sir, my very favorite. In fact I'd love to come visit you, say in January?😁
When you added the explosion at 10:22 you need to do a video and mention “nucing a nuc” and have that explosion!!🤷🏻 “when in doubt, nuc em out!!!!” Good stuff Brian!!
I've seen a few newer beekeepers lately, with 2 and 3 years experience, putting out loads of "How to" and also teaching. At 2-3 years, it gets scary you know.

Brian, I also recently had an abscond.😢. Why do you think they did it so late ? I was really surprised. Food present and mite treatments all the same. I went to put on my Hive Alive fondants and found an empty hive (1 of 17) just in the beginning stages of being robbed and no home bee. So strange…. Thank you for your vids and honesty! ❤🐝🐝 in Northern IL (JMom)
JMom, no idea. The hive has weight, mite treatments the same as others. Last wash I had 9, so wasn't that high. Makes me step back and think you know. . Appreciate you watching. I'll toss on my fondant in probably 2 weeks. I'm feeding 2:1 until the weather consistently stays below freezing.
You are getting a work out with the syrup buckets.😁Beautiful bee-yard on a wonderful Fall day my friend. Bob Bennie.👍 🤭I'd watch ya get stung.🤣Blessed Days buddy.😂 I'm sorry as the video went on I became confused, is someone bugging ya about telling people how to keep bees? I figured you just loved being a beekeeper and wanted to share it. I have always gotten the feeling of you sharing your time and experiences with your bees, your way.
@@CastleHives Ya wish I could still be feeding syrup, I packed mine up with sugar bricks yeasterday. I had to combine 1 of the 2 Russians so just 1 of those left. Sitting at 14 atm. Next few months will tell if they should be good or not. I liked your idea of using the 2 fondant types 1st going into Winter and then 2nd Spring. Seems like a good idea to me.
@@CastleHives Well ya end up using them for specific reasons and not just "food." The 2 types of fondant work a little different just like different types of patties do. So may as well capitalize on the differing designs.
Brian, you need a bottling bucket with a drip less value from John Hill. It would have made filling that barrel much easier. Voting day. I was getting paid to sit 15 hours saying hi, what's your name and address.
@@CastleHivestwo many great RUclips beekeepers to mention. Some with lots of content over the last 8 years but they don’t know how to use the algorithms!
I got a barrel from the same supplier and filled it with honey in September. You know honey is hygroscopic. Samples show the honey moisture content is rising. The honey pulled moisture out of the staves and it started leaking multiple places. So now I am trying to save the process by letting the honey drip out the cracks into a container and see what I end up with. It has been in the barrel for 2+ months and I am not optimistic.
There have been bees on/in the wall of my 100yr old house for I don’t know how long.. I wish I could get them into a hive!! Almost half way on the bourbon honey now! I am curious, did the barrel come new or has it had bourbon aged in it??
It was a once used, recently poured. The smell was amazing, if you like bourbon. I'm excited to try it out, once Jan 31st gets here. Appreciate you watching.
Hey Brian, cant wait to see how the honey turns out for you. Also well said about learning from more experienced keepers. I have a channel but say all the time im not to be learnt from as i dont feel i have enough experiences to confidently teach others. Great vid take care.
"It's all I can do to wait the 9 months" ROFL!!! Do you think the reason some of the hives blew through their feed is the insulation on the hives, I know you mentioned the Apimaye hives? What's a guy need to do to reserve 2 bottles of the barrel honey? I'm gonna make cannabis honey next year. :) I enjoyed and total agree with what you said about some of the new video creators. Love the plane, that was awesome, I know that was real! lol
I'll write your name on 2 jars. . And that is hilarious. Maybe a small bourbon cannibus batch, LOL. . You have no idea the strings i had to pull for that fly over. I owe folks 2k pounds of honey now. 😆 🤣 😂
I bottled it up back in April. It turned out fantastic. I would suggest, get a barrel 4 or 5 times the size of what you want. My next run for 5 gallons, i'll get a 20 gallon barrel. More area exposed to the wood, faster turn around.
@aCanadianBeekeepersBlog Appreciate that Ian. Next year will be a challenge if everything falls into place. I want to go single brood and sell a few NUCs. Quite the change from just a few years back.
