I loved that she sang this song on an episode of Murder, she Wrote 40 years later. She and Hurd Hatfeld who played Dorian Gray, became lifetime friends after this film and he was on a few episodes of her show. She's so beautiful here.
Yes indeed and her voice was so beautiful. We shall miss this classy lady, she was the sunshine of Hollywood. May she Rest In Peace with all the angels.
In a TV interview decades later she said her favorite gift from a fan was anonymously left for her at a Broadway theater where she was performing: a gold canary in a cage music box, that played this song. That shows you how much this role meant to her.
No other actor or actress has accomplished what Angela Lansbury has. Plenty of performers have appeared in more than one medium; only Angie has scored megahits on screen, on stage, and on television. Five Tony awards on Broadway, three Oscar nominations (it's a sin that she didn't win for her portrayal of absolute evil in "The Manchurian Candidate"), and a twelve-year run on "Murder, She Wrote". And, in her personal life, a decades-long marriage to her greatest love, a successful intervention to save her son and daughter from drugs, and a sterling reputation among her many friends and professional colleagues. One could say to Angie what a cockney laborer called out to Queen Victoria as she drove by in her coach on her Diamond Jubilee in 1897: "GO IT, OLD GIRL; YOU'VE DONE IT WELL!"
@@Scottsteaux63 Absolutely; and Moreno, unlike Angie, had to face the idiocy of anti-Latino bigotry. When asked in an interview about her professional life after "West Side Story", Moreno -- appropriately steel-eyed -- replied "Nine out of ten roles I was offered could have been summed up in one sentence: 'Yankee peeg, you steal me people's money!' " Keeping in mind, of course, that this was the same era in which CBS was initially afraid to air "I Love Lucy", on the grounds that a marriage between Lucy and -- gasp! -- a Cuban qualified as "interracial". Apparently the audience never got the memo.
Miss Lansbury has a beautiful face that you never get tired of looking. Simply gorgeous! She sung this haunting song in one of the episodes of Murder She Wrote, which was set in London. A great dramatic actress who can sing and dance and do comedy with panache!
I forgot how beautiful her voice was when she was young. Don't get me wrong, I love her singing in other films, but this really shows what a sweet tone she has, and it's such a lovely performance too.

This song will always remind me of my mother, because it was a song she liked a lot and I played this song for her to listen to when she was passing away in the hospital due to her critical condition. May you rest well with Jesus, Mama.
I think that I am correct is saying that Angela's singing "Little Yellow Bird" is the only time in her films that her own voice was used when singing. Everything was dubbed for the other films. What a shame as time proved later on Broadway. It is wonderful that her light delightful soprano was recorded for this film.
+johnjohnson You are correct! That was after her proven success as a singer on Broadway. I meant that in her early films her voice was only used for 'Goodbye Little Yellow Bird". Pity!. Thanks for your comment.

I really loved Angela Lansbury in this movie and felt she was wonderfully cast as the tragic Sibyl. You really felt for Sibyl and hated Dorion for taking advantage of her purity and innocence.
I have been reading the unedited book and the character that I think did the most damage was not Dorian Gray but Sir Henry who corrupted him and encouraged him to be so heartless and especially influenced his behaviour towards Sybil and afterwards took no responsibility for his part ...
Believe it it or not I'm watching the episode with Angela Lansbury singing this song. I love Angela Lansbury and I love Murder She Wrote. There is something so special about her and even when I watch her show every time I a beautiful young Angela Lansbury.

Last night I had a dream of a little yellow bird who visited my window, and I got a little cage for her and named her Baby. I would leave the cage open and she would fly off as she pleased but always come back. It was one of those dreams that seemed so real, and I woke up crying my eyes out realising it wasn’t real. @David - Angela is Anglo-Irish, born in London, UK, and her mom was Irish. She worked mostly in America. I really love this tune, I like to play it when feeling low.
The snow was very plentiful, And crumbs were very few When a weather-beaten sparrow Through a mansion window flew. Her eye fell on a golden cage; A sweet love song she heard, Sung by a pet canary there, A handsome yellow bird. He said to her: "Miss Sparrow, I've been struck by Cupid's arrow. Would you share my cage with me?" She looked up at his castle, with its ribbon and its tassel, and in a plaintive tone said she: "Good-bye, little yellow bird. I'd rather brave the cold On a leafless tree Than a prisoner be In a cage of gold. The spoiled and petted yellow bird Could scarce believe it true That a common sparrow should refuse A bird with blood so blue. He told her the advantages Of riches and of gold. She answered that her liberties For gold could not be sold. She said "I must be going." But he cried "No, no, its snowing, And the wintry winds do blow. Stay with me, my little dearie, For without you 'twould be dreary." But she only sighed "Ah, no." "Good-bye, little yellow bird. I'd gladly mate with you - I love you, little yellow bird, But I love my freedom, too. So good-bye, little yellow bird. I'd rather brave the cold On a leafless tree Than a prisoner be In a cage of gold."
