I have a question about your new stove. Is the big door on the right the oven and the two on the left, are they both for wood?? Your old one had that part on the top, was that a warming tray?

So sorry for your loss. I have to say & maybe you’ll get a chuckle outbid it, but my husband has only been good at hiring someone to fix or repair since we’ve been married. Soooo, to save money, guess who has learned about DIY (installing, painting, & repairing)? Yes, me. My 3 daughters have always said “mom, we know you’ll be ok when Dad is gone.” True. Been at it since I was 40, now 71 & just installed a new dining room light fixture by myself. I’ll be fine. (as a matter of fact maybe better off. lol)

You are very wise my friend. I care for an elderly couple who are 87 and 86, they still live in their home. It's a little cottage style house like yours, two bedrooms, one bath. 10 yrs ago Alphie got Parkinson's disease, before that he and Jacqueline had a garden every year, he did mostly all the home repairs and maintenance. Jacqueline tells me that her son Ross was planning to rewire their home for them, and do some more difficult repairs like rebuilding the front porch. He passed away from a heart attack 4 years ago at 56 yrs old. They can't garden anymore, and the house is becoming more and run down for lack of repairs. This past spring the well went dry, so it's been a struggle for me to help them stay in their home together. The neighbors help out by piling their winter wood, clearing the snow for them in the winter. I planted tomatoes and cucumbers up by the house for her and potted flowers so she can still do some light gardening. I take Alphie to his Dr appointments, his Parkinson's is in late stage now so he can't do even the smallest chores. Any family they have call from time to time, but I feel like they have given up on them. I am trying to help them stay in their home, trying to keep it as clean and comfortable and safe as I can for them. But because of the electrical problems, the water and numerous other repairs being needed this might be their last winter in their home. Always thinking ahead is a good idea, setting yourself up for a comfortable golden age. In the world we live in today families are so busy it's hard for them to take time out to help. Not everyone has a community to step up when the family doesn't. It's a good investment in your future, at the rate your going you will outlive us all ... 😊❤❤ I have been following you since the beginning when you only had us handful of subscribers, you have been my safe place to land over the years, when things in my world got tough. I miss Jack, and recently I had to say goodbye to my Stanley, we used to watch your channel together, perhaps he and Jack are running and playing together in some ethereal meadow , waiting for us to join them one day. ❤ I will always be GREAT-FULL for your lessons and gentle guidance. Through all the ups and downs. You are a light 🕯️🪽✨

You are an inspiration in so many ways! You look fantastic and healthy. You remind me of my Bohemian SoDak Grandma who was also a big gardener and looked young and healthy. I am turning 67 this month! It's scary as I am not sure I know where the time has gone. I seem to have arrived here in the blink of any eye. I am in much the same position as you as I have to do most things myself. It's hard work without a doubt, but it keeps me young and I value my independence above everything else. However, where wiring is concerned you are very wise to hand it over to the professionals. Better safe than incinerated! Love the kichen it is looking very good and as always Bealtaine is such an inspirational place to spend some me time with a cup of coffee enjoying your creativity. Blessings to you and the wee girl , Patsy.

First off I love your hair cut. You are so right we need to prepare for the years ahead while doing all we can on our own as money is precious in this day and age. I live alone at 76 and have always been a can do woman and done all I can to save money and care for my home. There are some things we can not usually do like plumbing and wiring. I recently had plumbing done and its increased in price by 3 times in the USA after covid. Keep up the good work and realize you are doing so well. The chairs are wonderful. You did good my friend!

We lost our air conditioning yesterday. We live in Florida. One cannot live comfortably in Florida in the summer without air conditioning. We are getting quotes, but it is horribly expensive to buy an air conditioner now. Sigh. Everything is so expensive since Covid hit. So, Colette, I can empathize with you. As we age, (I'm 5 years older than you) it becomes apparent that we need to be more kind to ourselves. Making time in each day to just relax and appreciate all that we have done is important. I'm an outdoor kind of person. So even though it is miserably hot and humid at this time of year, I'm still outside doing what needs done. I just need that outdoor time. So, in the mornings or evenings, most days you will find me outside. I wish that I had your beautiful garden. But I'm still trying to figure out what will grow well here since I am a transplant from the north. Your apples look scrumptious. Thank you for sharing your lovely photos.

I find that as I age, (65 currently), that whenever I can afford to have someone else do a job for me, I think how lucky we are that there are a few people left who are highly skilled to do such work, and I feel good that I am helping that person make their living (even tho it is $$$). Yes, the prices of EVERYTHING have soared, but until more wake up and see why this is happening, we are all stuck trying to make ends meet. You see, They do this so we will become more dependent on Them. I long for the days when we bartered for goods and services- yes! in my lifetime in the 70's and even the 80's, we bartered. Sadly, everyday skills are becoming a thing of the past.
And I do agree that we have to give ourselves a break-especially you Colette! I come to watch your videos, and leave in awe at how much you do, and how much you have accomplished!! It keeps me motivated and inspired! ✨

I think we women have a harder time being kind to ourselves. Collette let someone do the tiles. I'm 76 and lost my husband last year after taking care of him for four years. Two years ago I had lung cancer, never smoked, and the surgery was awful. Then in January I lost my little companion, a 14 year old Shih Tzu. Then a few months ago I realized I was very depressed. I had tried to do everything myself and be strong and not worry my children. I have realized it's okay to be kind to ourselves just like we are kind and loving to others. Some days now if I don't get everything done I know that's okay. I have learned to say no and not feel guilty. Your posts give me a sense of calm and I admire you so much and the life you have made for yourself. Love and kindness to you. 👍🌻💙

Dear Colette, Your color sense is so great. My Dad, an artist, used to say “Don’t ever be Color-fraud “ I have followed his lead. We are having an insurance crisis here in California and home policies are getting out of the state. We got a notice about “moss on our roof’. We disputed it and got reinstated. In the meantime we need to upgrade our old bungalow. Our knob and tube wiring has to be elimated. Electrician came this week, as well. Still waiting for the estimate. Eeks! We can commiserate.

After many years as a teacher, I look forward to having the long days of fall to properly get the garden in order and enjoy the turning of the year . You are so right about future proofing. After a three year long health crisis that is now resolved (thank the goddess!) I am so very grateful to be able to build and dig and harvest and paint and all the things. Doing all you can, and recognizing when you need help, is not an easy balance. You are graceful with that balance. I have found very good, lovely, competent people who do things and see things much the same way I do that can take over those jobs. I don't mind paying for quality work. I too did everything myself. I told my daughter a long time back that I would live my life as if she wasn't here ( living in the house with me). This way, when she left, my life would not change very much ( other than to miss her company).

This video landed just when I needed it so thankyou for the window into this wonderful oasis of sanity you have created. Although I'm 74 and now living in a welsh mining village to be near my daughter I was brought up in the country where I have lived most of my life . Your reference to the gathering swallows reminded me that life is better measured in the old way; the arrival of certain plants and birds; their leaving to herald a new season. Nature is the most wonderful thing is you take notice of it. I love the new stove and refreshed kitchen and enjoyed hearing your glee at having bedroom lights at last. Being without certainly teaches us the joy such a small gift ( small to others that is) can give us. For me back in the 70's it was to have running water in my cottage and an inside loo!

Absolutely BEAUTIFUL, Colette!!! The closing pictures are magically meditative. I’m “imagining” one of a potted pine tree - twinkling with a string of battery operated faerie lights - some late afternoon in December in “the Secret Garden” 🎄 Heaven knows what you’ll be up to between now and then 😂😉😊. -V

I truly enjoy walking your land vicariously through your gorgeous videos/photography! They provide such a calming balm when "things fall apart, the center cannot hold"; yes, hope can endure, though darkness threatens. Your land, your lifestyle, and your depictions of them show us what is possible.

    Your garden is a dream,
I hope you will get at least 3 estimates for the rewiring.
Had a roof leak and was told “10,000”, $7,000 and found an old fashioned roofer and got it repaired for $700😊
    Life goes on.
Okay I will take the time to relax…

Hello Colette, your kitchen is looking wonderful. You will soon have the tile completed and the chairs. It's good to have safe electricity in your cottage even though the cost is hard to swallow. It's good to be safe. Your garden is inspiring. I just love the sounds of your windchimes when the wind rushes through. It is so peaceful and meditative. Blessings to you. ❤

Isn't it exciting when something is fixed after years of working around it?! Last year the HVAC had to be replaced and my old baby dog developed heart problems. The expenses put a lot of things on hold. But it had to be done. Just lost my old baby last week. The expense and work it took to get him thru was worth every penny and minute. His name was Jack and he used to come to your voice when you called your baby.

Your cottage looks absolutely lovely! I feel for you needing wiring redone. What an overwhelming reality. When I was a single mother of 4 my plumbing needed to completely redone as I had copper pipes that were starting to get pin holes and leaking. But similarly to your wiring, as you basically said, then it would be done and will no longer be something to worry about. As we get older, we do need more light at times and you will have it. I agree with you 110% regarding the importance of rest. Resting and being lazy are two different things. At our age we don't bounce back as quickly as we did when we were younger. I believe we all have a tendency to forget that and tend to over do. Easy to do if you feel younger. Continue to take care of yourself without guilt.❤

Colette, I think you are wise to have a professional electrician re-wire your house. It is very important to have the electrical stuff done well as bad wiring can be a fire hazard!
For the tiles surrounding the stove, may I recommend classic blue and white tiles. They are never out of style and would look so good with your lovely colour scheme. All the best!

Our home was built in 1953 and it was pieced together with found windows, doors, etc. when we purchased it we replaced the windows and doors, and put in a kitchen and made it very comfortable. We’ve been unable to afford a bath replacement nor new wiring. Things work okay but cannot load up one circuit with too much. We do what we can. I love your little cottage and what you’ve done is amazing to me. Hope things will continue to work for you and not give you any problems as I’m 69 and cannot do the work much longer either nor afford large expenses.

Good morning Collette , one thing I have learned in this old life is that it is all about goals and projects , Set a goal , work at it , complete it and then set another . My husband and I are replacing stuff now because it's been 35 years since our last reno and things are falling apart ...the wall oven is shot , the countertop stove works when it feels like it , the fridge is old and matches nothing ,,,flooring is worn , you know ,,,,it's time but at 65 and chronically ill the energy level is not what it was soooooo i do what I can do and that's it ! I am grateful to be able to wrap myself in my home and enjoy it , as you do yours ! Good luck and the kitchen is looking lovely , invite me over for a cup of tea please.........Cherryl from Canada

Happy day to you Colette. I am so glad that you are getting things in your home fixed up. There is such a feeling of relief when we can check the boxes off on the seemingly endless list of home maintenance items. It just makes life easier and allows us a little less worry. I am excited to see what you have chosen for your tile. Love the new photo feature you are adding to your vlogs. I too wish I could paint but alas, not a talent I was blessed with, so I turned to a camara and LOVE photographing nature and the light. Have a lovely evening, snuggled up with Miss Patsy and enjoying a hot cup of tea. 💚

Absolutely charming kitchen, that stove! I bet you will live in the kitchen when winter comes around. The heat from that thing must be wonderful. 😍 You are a very young 69! But I do understand. I'm 56 and I have 1 acre of land, and I have admired your woodland garden, but it doesnt come by itself does it? 😉 I don't have the energy, (working outside of the home) so I am just keeping a quarter or so of the land, and the rest is completely wild. Every year it is different parts of the garden that I enjoy especially. And yes! I built a greenhouse this summer. I totally agree. you are the encyclopedia of knowledge and creativity. I am a copycat of so many things. I have planted and mother nature has planted trees - not excactly where I want them to grow, but I love them. I have not planted a hedge on my garden. There is wild shrubs that i cut like hedges. I have a lot of birch, and some, I cut the top off, so they are just pretty tiny trees. I moved into my house in 2019, like you, it was a wasteland, nothing here. I can't compare to your garden, but I enjoy it.

Yes, you do need your "me' time Collette. I was 70 back in July . I left home young and just turned to repairing things or making things to make life a bit more comfortable for myself. I'm still at it, on a smaller scale and not out of necessity anymore. Hate having tradespeople in but sometimes it has to be done. Your chair looks fab. I did one about three years ago. You are a resourceful lady. 😊
