    This is a simple project, made on the wood lathe. I wanted to recreate a vintage plumb bob.
    And I wanted to do it for a practical reason, I am renovating part of my house and I can't seem to find two bubble levels to show me the same vertical, so I thought this ancient technology could be used to calibrate the levels.

    • @TheSmallWorkshop

      You can mark straight vertical lines. Most bubble levels are not very accurate and you can use gravity to check if they are good or not. Of course a rock tied to a string could do the same thing, but I wanted to have a fancy one.

    Beautiful work! That winder is really something; there's a curve for every eye. But I need to ask: Why the epoxy?? The bob would have stayed together perfectly well without it and without the epoxy the bob would be repairable!! That makes the tool sustainable....

    • @TheSmallWorkshop
      @TheSmallWorkshop  Год назад

      I wanted the rod to be glued to the wood so I can easely remove the round nut and replace the string, which I expect to wear out quite fast. I must admit I did not thought about replacing the wooden part in the future.

      When suspended, it marks both a specific point directly below it, while also establishing a perfect vertical.
      Ever seen road crews setting up yellow tripods near roads or intersections, and looking through camera-like devices? Those are surveyor crews, and they used to use tools like plum-bobs before GPS became cheaper and more accurate.

    And all made from recycled materials! Great work! If you don't have the proper tool. Make it!
