Meg is different simply for one thing: She's older, and she has worldly experience. She's already experienced love and she's experienced heartbreak along with that so that's actually made her _jaded_ towards romance. You don't usually get that with Disney heroines. Someone who's afraid to love again because she doesn't want to get hurt. That's very relatable for an older audience, especially older women.
I think it is so notable to have these romance elements in a kids film and also fully acknowledging that she already has "experience" relationship-wise. I think disney and most children's media set many unrealistic standards about love and relationships, and going the "easy route" and depicting someones "first love" as "the one", literally the only relationship you will (or should) ever have adds also another kind of unhealthy pressure regarding this topic.
It's an interesting point that she doesn't have an unshakable moral core like the other disney 'princesses'. It could be suggested that her backstory alone mirrors the journey of other disney women: she gave up her soul to save her lover, a heroic and selfless act. The difference is, with Megara, that her story didn't end in happily ever after, she suffered the consequences of her deal and her man ran off with another woman. Megara is what happened when the story didn't have a happily ever after which makes her arc to find that heroism far more compelling, she changed who she was to become a better person. The other Disney princesses start off good people and finish their films still good people, though perhaps a little wiser.
In fact it's almost worse Hera causes Hercules to go bat shit insane and Hercules ends up killing her and her children by him. Don't hold it against Hercules though, his madness was caused by Hera who had been making the guy miserable his entire life, and directly made him do that.
@@dalaicavalcanti8106 it's a different story. Disney's version is totally different to the Greek stories. In the Greek stories Hercules isn't Hera's son, Zeus cheated when he pretended to be a woman's husband to sleep with her. Hero hated him because of that. In the Greek stories he did the trials to make up for killing his family but in Disney's version he did it to be a hero.

I'd argue Esmeralda and Tiana are on par. The former is a highly-skilled, strong-willed woman who outsmarts numerous guards by herself and is literally part of an underground movement fighting against genocide, and the latter is an intelligent, hard-working woman who does her best to help prince Naveen become more responsible.
Meg's lived a life believing everyone is selfish thus became the same way herself in order to survive. Hercules challenged her beliefs since he's a decent, kind hearted, selfless person.
3:48 You (correctly) mention the artistic choice to narrow her eyes, but I always loved that small moment when, after Hercules kisses her, her eyes, for a small moment, become as big as any other Disney princess. I always interpreted Meg as what would happen if a Disney princess got their happy ever after, then got cheated on, and we see them 5 years later not recovered. So in that eyes widening scene, I always viewed that as her recapturing that side of her, recapturing the ability to love again, it's temporary, because he reverting back to that person would be silly, she still holds those memories and they still define her, but is finally able to move on, and discard the more toxic consequences to her personality from her backstory. (Obviously at that point in the story she's still in denial about her love, but that was the moment that cracked the levee.)
While Cinderella is my favorite Disney princess for her kindness and resilience, Meg is my favorite female lead for her maturity and personality. I absolutely love her and this video!
I like how her character is dynamic and grows through the film.....the new wave of female characters for younger audiences have been static and inherently "perfect" missing out on growth and change that made characters like meg endearing in the first place.
I talked about the girls of Disney with a lot of people when I was younger and a lot of people I talked to used to just describe Meg as a “bitch”. I found that disappointing, bc I felt Meg was a great, interesting, strong yet vulnerable character, complex and brilliant. She’s easily one of the best characters Disney ever made.
Shame she isn't given the credibility or "fame" that other Disney Heroines get- the whole movie, in general, tends to get overlooked (when it comes to merchandise) and it's so sad to see. Also, can we just applaud the music choice in the background? Alan Menken did such a good job conducting the soundtrack.
Same as me!!!!!!!!!!! I LOVE Meg a lot even in Hercules there is a deleted song I know Meg is my favorite Disney character EVER She is a very different heroine like what you said And Meg was 20 years old when she met Herclues
Meg really reminds me of one older woman I have worked with, even down to the frizzy, uncontrollable dark curly hair. And because I looked up to her, I love Meg all the more.
At some point, I'd like to see a comparison of this adaptation of Megara vs. the Hades version of the character, as compared to the original Greek mythology. Incredibly, they have similar hair styles, similar voices, similar sarcastic (or sardonic) wit, and similar ways of dealing with their reluctant feelings towards the guy in their life (generally they start out being apathetic to them, doing a job for Hades that would put them in opposition of the main character, but not feeling personal feelings towards them until later). But a lot of that isn't necessarily laid out in the mythology. I wonder if Hades' Meg took a good look at Disney's Meg when designing her character?
Well, tbf they needed Meg to be deeper bcs Herc was quite... an airhead (to put it rudely). Herc's char development is linear to the story, much like a lot of Disney heroines main protagonist. So Meg's got the "partner that needs saving from themselves" part. (Edit: not exactly damsel in distress. But she is a damsel in distress, yes.) Meg is more comparable to Disney chars like Beast and Simba, both lost their way and shy away from life bcs of stuff.
You’re right, she is a very _specific_ type of woman. Inherently, I wager good looks/IQ HAVE to be present in order to form HER, aside from circumstances. Met a couple Megs in real life, rare to find. Fun to banter with as they are always optimistically pessimistic. Alas, with my sillier side, we just don’t mesh. But I’ve always liked interacting with Megs. I understand them. They’ll have your back too. You respect them, they respect you.
hercules is actually the one with the doe eyes in this movie and i love that dynamic, he’s the actual offspring of a higher being trying to find himself and his true potential and has a naive view of the world where meg is seasoned and experienced
This was the first time Disney made the female love interest the bad guy. There's been a lot of scoundrels and even monsters who turn good and fall in love with the female main character (the Beast and Flynn Rider come to mind, and I guess Phoebus from Hunchback and Dimitri from Anastasia could also count), but this is the only time I can recall the woman being on the bad side and turning good. Sure, she was technically working with Hades against her own will, but that doesn't change the fact that she was plotting against Hercules the whole time. In fact, until their first "date" (which happened the same day of the final battle), she never even experienced feelings for him. And after Hades revealed she was working for him, and Hercules was downtrodden and refused to understand her explanation, she herself had to take matters into her own hands and regain Hercules' trust by rescuing Pegasus, bringing Phil to motivate him, and risking her life to save him from the falling pillar. Definitely a good arc. Despite being a hilarious comedy with a light tone, the whole scene where Hades revealed Meg worked for him (even though it was against her will as she was his slave), was very emotional and arguably realistically done, as Hercules would be unlikely to forgive Meg even if she tried to explain her situation. I love that in the end, Hercules refused to join the Gods and went back to earth to be with Meg. Shows that true love is the most important thing in the world, more so than material comforts.
In most Disney movies women who are conventionally “pretty” are always the good people, unblemished skin, beautiful hair and skinny. Meg breaks that barrier Disney had portrayed til then.

Megara is my ultimate favorite Disney character too!!❤ that's why when Tinkerbell came out, I got an immediate girl crush on Vidia eventho I knew she wasn't the protagonist at first❤🤣
Meg is Eve from the bible. She represents the apogee of sweetness turned bad but not without a chance of redemption. She must've started out good until she ate of the forbidden fruit. Now tarnished, she coyly seeks acquittance and a second chance.
If she was as spoiled as you said, she'd never fall in love with Hercules. She'd rather hated him for his moral perfection, because it would remind her how corrupted she is. So if what you said was true she'd try to destroy Hercules, instead of saving him, just to get rid of this "mirror" of her imperfections. Remember how she commented that Hercules is "really perfect" after she tried to seduce him? This is what she always wanted - to find somebody genuinly virtuos. Because that who she trully is but afraid to show it, hiding her true self behind this cynical femme fatale's mask of hers. When she found out that Hercules is "for real" and doesn't afraid to show it, she fell in love with him. Because he was perfect. And she wasn't intimidated or infuriated by it, because that's how she is, though unwilling to reveal it. Her "sexual advances" on Hercules doesn't mean sexual experience (otherwise she'd barely had problems with that centaur early in the movie). She is just well aware of her sexual appeal and knows how attractive her body is for men and how to manipulate them weaponizing her beauty. Yet when Hercules rejected her advances she was actually happy about it. She valued his purity, which is only possible if she is pure herself. Otherwise she'd hated it and mocked him. So no, she is not antiheroine, neither she is corrupted in the slightest. She is virtuous but she is afraid of it, wearing a mask to hide what she cosiders her vulnarability. She once sacrificed herself out of one-sided love for (supposedly) Adonis who just used her. Thus she afraid that her virtuous nature could be used again or cause her another troubles. That's a pretty common problem. As C.S. Lewis puts it, a lot of virtuous people afraid to show it "because it might prevent their Being Like Folks; that people who would really wish to be and are offered the Grace which would enable them to be honest, chaste or temperate refuse it. To accept it might make them Different, might offend against the Way of Life, take them out of Togetherness, impair their Integratio with the Group. They might (horror of horrors!) become individuals". So what happened to her wasn't transformation, it was her gaining courage to be herself.
Congratulations on your video. It's amazing. Meg has always been my favourite disney character. I spent my teenage years in isolation because like Meg says, no one can hurt you and I felt so connected to her since my childhood. She's so relatable because she's not perfect and she knows it. Although I love and admire very much Esmeralda, she seems to do it everything perfect and life is not that way. That's why Megara will always be my heroin.
I would say I don't think the seperation of the 3 groups are done very fairly, like strong or fierce, what is that supposed to mean? physical strong? emotionally strong? But I do agree that there are some broad groups you can divide them into, I would probably focus more on the parts you can't change before it becomes another character, like: *The Kindful* - The trait of being kind towards others. Like Cinderella (staying kind, optimistic, etc towards everyone she meets), Snow white (same), Belle (she is never once mean or rude, but stays kind, at least also in her language, and stays with the prince because she wants to help him) *The Dutiful* - Give back/protect a close group - Mulan for trying to protect her family, Aurora for sacrificing her own potential happiness to perform and reciprocate the love she have been given (by performing the duty of a princess, she knows her parents sacrificed their time with her, so she want to reciprocate that). Kida, Pocahontas etc. Their drive often is derived from protecting something, or uphold some form of trust instilled in them by others. Though Pocahontas may be more the 3rd, but it can be hard to really classify them. *The Seekers/achievers* - Their character being about seeking someplace/something. - So like the little mermaid, who loves humans, and want to be part of them, seeking to become them. It doesn't have to be a romance-kinda-love-seeking, but it's important that it makes up one of the more fundamental parts of who they are, like tangled I would argue would belong in this group, same with Moana and Tiana. They want to achieve something, and that is their main drive. I would argue it's a better way of classifying them, as it takes a deeper look at what is making up their core, in terms of personality/drive. What is it that you can't change about the character, without destroying the character completely. That said, I really liked the video, and I do agree. I would probably, if I were to group her, I would probably place her in group 2, just that her story may have started out as dutiful, but lost the group/person she was protecting, and is left without any group/community/etc. to show that side of her to, instead having it replaced by the toxicly exquisit shade-relationship that is Hades and her.
That’s very true that it’s very hard for Meg to trust another person that would experience the same love that she has now because nobody but Jesus Christ from Heaven knows only all about her relationships.
Let's face it...given that the target audience for Disney animated films these days is primarily composed of girls between the ages of five and twelve (especially with the Disney Princess franchise), Megara is an extremely odd choice as a Disney heroine. I'm actually not surprised that "Hercules" was not a commercial success given that Megara is not someone that members of the typical target audience would (or frankly should) be able to relate to. This is not to say that I don't consider Megara to be well-written as a character, because this isn't true. Quite the opposite, in fact -- in my opinion, she's actually one of the most complex and interesting heroines Disney has ever created. Megara is much more sophisticated than the typical members of the Disney viewing audience, and I think this is what makes her problematic as a Disney heroine. Megara sacrificed herself for the man she loved who then abandoned her -- and she's (somewhat understandably) become bitter, cynical, defensive, and disillusioned as a result. This is not really the kind of mindset you'd expect (or want) to find in a pre-teen girl.
IM GONNA BE REAL HERE GUYS, I CLICKED ON THIS THINKING I WOULD GET SOMEONE TALKING OVER THE LYRICS INSTEAD OF SINGING IT BAHAHA (I watched it all the way through! Very interesting!)
Meg is unique in that she's the only Disney princess that was allowed to consciously make a mistake. Every other heroine's misstep was easily written off as being naive or scared, if they made one at all. The narrative didn't treat her with kid gloves. She's also a rare (and maybe the only) example of a major Disney character going though a redemption arc, rather than just character development. It's a shame that we didn't continue to get characters like her, and I'm sure it has something to do with Hercules' (relative!!!!) poor performance financially. After this film, we see Disney return to a traditional 'inexperienced young girl is the main character and narrative treats her every choice as acceptable and ultimately blames any flames on OTHER characters' formula. Meg, in a lot of ways, has more in common with Disney Princes than Princesses.
I'm really starting to love Meg as a character, that's why I'm hoping they don't make a live action version of Hercules. Note: Every live action remake has their main female character bland and pretty much the same. They look good, but have little to no character. They have little to no personality. I'm worried they'd ruin Meg if there was a live action Hercules. I've really grown to love Meg, she's one of my favorites even! That's why I'm hoping they don't make a live action version of this.

Ditto. Jaded & afraid of getting hurt again…
That's actually a lot of words for just "one thing".
If it's "one thing" to describe her it's gonne be "perfect"

Megara
Was my favorite character of movie Hercules 1997.
I would say I don't think the seperation of the 3 groups are done very fairly, like strong or fierce, what is that supposed to mean? physical strong? emotionally strong? But I do agree that there are some broad groups you can divide them into, I would probably focus more on the parts you can't change before it becomes another character, like:
*The Kindful* - The trait of being kind towards others. Like Cinderella (staying kind, optimistic, etc towards everyone she meets), Snow white (same), Belle (she is never once mean or rude, but stays kind, at least also in her language, and stays with the prince because she wants to help him)
*The Dutiful* - Give back/protect a close group - Mulan for trying to protect her family, Aurora for sacrificing her own potential happiness to perform and reciprocate the love she have been given (by performing the duty of a princess, she knows her parents sacrificed their time with her, so she want to reciprocate that).
That’s very true that it’s very hard for Meg to trust another person that would experience the same love that she has now because nobody but Jesus Christ from Heaven knows only all about her relationships.
megara desde que yo era niño es mi chica favorita de todo disney...aún hoy a mis 34 años de edad sigue siendo mi favorita.
Yooooo; you did such a great job making this video!
IM GONNA BE REAL HERE GUYS, I CLICKED ON THIS THINKING I WOULD GET SOMEONE TALKING OVER THE LYRICS INSTEAD OF SINGING IT BAHAHA
(I watched it all the way through! Very interesting!)
I think we can all agree, Meg is best girl
0:06 Goddamn it, now I gotta go listen to the whole thing again
Megara is different from other Disney princess, she is relatable.
We slytherins know why Meg is the best!😤🐍💅🏾
I freaking loved this!!!
We're both have a favorite character is megara
She's most experienced in love than Hercules, sassy as Tartarus, senxual, older. Its different and wonderful, I love her.
underrated review, keep going
Absolutely correct point(without knowing the purpose) you got it right. o what an analysis who are you Lady?! 🤩
Damn I need to rewatch this film
Meg is my spirit animal
I like how at the 5:00 mark you're saying that she wasn't looking for love...just as she backs onto Cupids arrow. Nice touch that
That last statement made me cry. Very nice video!
This is a brilliant essay
I haven't watched the video yet but Meg was such a queen she was my idol growing up honestly
i...have never been more intrigued *sips tea, subscribes
1:50 which one are you?.... I would be awkwardly charming if I had to choose.
I'm going to learn how to be all 3 hello! 👏 But right now I'm 2 as well
please make more videos. its soo good ,plus your voice is so calming
I have found a piece of gold again
She was always in the top tier.
Meg is my favorite animated character and need more of her
2 words is all you need to describe her personality:
Over it.
True. She's seen the worst and knows it's not going to change for her.
Mine is Kuzco
they just don't make em like they used to.
Mee too, ok I admit my favourite is Belle
Meg is a rolemodel!
That's why I'm hoping they don't make a live action version of this.
at first i hated her till we learned her back story and I won't say im in love
But Megara was in her situation because she self sacrified before. So her actions are understandable
Meg has always been my favorite as well.
you kinda sound like her :)
...and then HERK killed her and all their children. The end.
The most winsome heroine; always adored her
Meg wouldn't be the first or last I'd mention in my 💪 or fearless ♞ fems tier list
