  • Welcome to Friday Night Sleepover!
Beauty and the Beast (1991) showcases some of the most beautiful animation in the Disney Renaissance, especially in the beast transformation scene. But, when the prince turns around we were all shocked to see a prince that just didn't look how we imagined. Who's the blame for this horrible offense? Let's look at the animation process, from animator Glen Keane's pencil tests, to the color application, and see if we can solve this mystery.

It’s also clear in Glen Keane’s original version, that the prince’s eyes are looking above “camera” at Belle. In the final, he’s drawn to look directly into the camera. He’s not looking at Belle, he’s looking at us. It’s an uncanny fourth wall break the artist didn’t envision.

I always thought the jump-scare intro to the prince's faces was over-dramatizing the eyes. Eyes that had been a key hints to his human side. Thankfully the artist redeemed themselves in other shots (except for the nose. Thought it was funny that in perspective, his human nose was bigger than the beast nose).

I would go back further than Michaelangelo.... It makes me think of a Byzantine Icon. His face is perfectly symmetrical in the reveal, which was considered the Ideal of beauty. The transformation scene (especially how he radiates light) invokes the Transfiguration. And as another comment pointed out: he's not looking at Belle, but staring directly into the eyes of the viewer (us). There's actually quite a lot going on if you look at it through the eyes of Christian/European iconography/art history

We don't exactly get ample time to grow used to his human design. Honestly, it doesn't look bad just oddly too detailed and realistic compared to the rest of the human characters (I'd say it's just like Aurora when she wakes up and blinks and she has a realistic face and her tiara is gemstone incrusted, only that scene was prettier). I still find the heavy browbones to look off on a Disney Prince, cause it looks like already enough detail to have that specific feature on a delicate face with prominent lips. I think they thought they were drawing from aspects of his Beast design, but it just ended up looking funny. I'd prefer if they animated him with a face that looks less detailed but still handsome more like John Smith or John Rolfe from Pocahontas level of detailed faces.

Aside from the awkward lighting/shading mentioned in the video, I kind of always assumed that the prince looks odd in that reveal shot because he's probably experiencing a hurricane of emotions due to the intensity of the situation. Think about it, he had pretty much lost the will to live when Gaston and the mob stormed the castle, then he lights up when he sees Belle has returned to him, THEN he is stabbed by Gaston and dies in Belle's arms.... and when he wakes up he's suddenly a human again. How does one even process such a crazy sequence of events? I have made much uglier facial expressions in much less dramatic situations, I can't even imagine the shock, disbelief, relief, confusion, happiness that the prince must be feeling in those first couple of moments when he realizes what has happened. Just my headcanon though.

Wow... I never noticed Belle has a lost eye for almost half of the frames of the movie!

Yup. Her face and eyes change so much from frame to frame that I wish it was fixed cause I love the movie so much.

As a kid, Beauty and the Beast was like my fav movie. But when I saw the face of the prince, it felt anticlimactic tbh.

They went too hard on his beast form. How could they top that 😆 I do like his human form a lot though, and the processes detailed in the video was very interesting too! Keep it up~

@@patrickmulopo7957 it's fine if you like him, but it's not a "fad"; I literally saw this movie as a young teenager when it came out, when the internet was barely a thing, let alone something that a 13 year old would have access to to be caught in a fad, and I have a vivid memory of being disappointed by the transformation into this prince. Not everyone dislikes it, but this has been a thing for literally thirty years, it's not an internet fad, people just didn't like the animation of the prince post transformation 🤷🏻

This was so interesting! I didn’t know any of this until now, thank you. I always thought the prince looked “off” because he seemed styled after renaissance paintings with the way his face looked and how he was posed after turning around to look at Belle. Idk if that makes sense?? But I’ve always thought that. Awesome video!

1:00 Can we just take a second to appreciate that one of the animators who worked on the Beast was named "Geefwee Boedoe?"

Loved this video! My sister and I used to laugh hysterically whenever we saw this scene because we thought he looked so ridiculous. But I loved hearing the technical reasons as to why it looks off. Very informative and engaging!

Thank you! As a kid I just couldn’t like that scene... he looked too realistic and I felt like their efforts to make him look extremely handsome put him in some uncanny valley.

I wasn’t sure what to expect from the video, and was pleasantly surprised! From the opening, I totally agreed with the fact that the prince looked a little off. And from the first time I saw the film I thought this. But I love the exclamation of where the change happened.
Perhaps that’s the reason that I love rough or pencil drawings versus the final cel set up when purchasing art.
