Idk man he’s always been the most attractive Disney prince to me. Yes, that shot does look a little off, but I wouldn’t go so far as to call it creepy or ugly. He’s so beautiful, straight up the only Disney prince I had a crush on. 🥺
The beast and Prince Adam is the most judged character in Disney for physical appearance even though he represents a character that teaches people not to judge people’s appearance. Even his live version beast is hated. People are shallow af or they’re all secretly furry.
@@ft.jackjimmy7282 The live action of Beauty and The Beast was over the place, the cast was bad for each character, imo Adam is beautiful and angelic, the live action actor just...didnt meet the standarts.
Also fun fact... There was a dispute between Glen Keane and another animator on who was responsible for the model sheet for Bell. So there was two sheets people were going off of. So every once in a while Bell's face gets a bit more round and kind of pudgy and that's why. And once you know this, it sticks out like a sore thumb
It’s interesting how there’s a split in who finds him attractive in this scene, and who doesn’t. This will get across my thoughts: this is my fav scene from all the Disney animated films since becoming an adult. IMO, it’s the most human expression they’ve achieved on a male face in the last 30 years, but he also feels like a classic sculpture made alive through animation.
Dude I've always thought he was gorgeous. he looks like a renaissance sculpture. I mean he looks kind of startled in that shot and his nose is weirdly drawn yes. But if you look at the other shots he looks just fine. It's always been a bit weird to me when people say "CHANGE BACK" it's like...are you a furry? It's weird for me for starters that Belle fell in love with him looking like a full on animal. I understand it's about his personality not his looks but he doesn't look like a "monstruous" human, just some type of animal. That's the part I'm weirded about.
Saying "change back" also completely misses the point of the entire movie. Breaking the curse turned him back into a human, not make him look "handsome."
This video is ironic because that reveal with the prince’s piercing gaze and almost holy appearance was particularly awe-inspiring to me as a child and always stuck with me.
I would go back further than Michaelangelo.... It makes me think of a Byzantine Icon. His face is perfectly symmetrical in the reveal, which was considered the Ideal of beauty. The transformation scene (especially how he radiates light) invokes the Transfiguration. And as another comment pointed out: he's not looking at Belle, but staring directly into the eyes of the viewer (us). There's actually quite a lot going on if you look at it through the eyes of Christian/European iconography/art history
@@DigiDestined13 I think back in the day royal families married within, well, the family, to preserve royal blood or whatever? Don’t quote me on that though.
He’s beautiful like a marble statue, and tuning a Prince that looks more like that into a beast looking creature makes more dramatic effect then just a hot guy like Prince Eric turning into the beast.
Lol I thought I was the only one lol. Well, I never thought he looked bad. You see the basics of glen keanes sketches in there! But the shading is rushed. And YES, the crowd shots with less detailed figures are clearly rushed. You know...IF they wanted a remake... why not a remaster where the best of the best get to adjust the shots that a lacking a tad.
That’s such an amazing idea for remakes. Belle’s and Ariel’s changing faces bother me. I would love to see the classics “fixed” into what they originally intended but couldn’t because of time constraints.
@@BbGun-lw5vi And incorporate more songs from the broadway musical! I would kill to hear Me or Home and see it come to life through animation (like they did Human Again)
Ahhh!! This was a good explanation. I definitely thought he looked weird and not that attractive as human there. The final reveal was a big disappointment for me as a kid. I was like “ugghhh!! He’s not as cute as Eric”😂😂😂
The thing I thought was weird about the Prince was that he seemed to look a little different in every shot. I just wished they had drawn him more consistently as he moved. I do like the way he looked in this shot but it does look better with the shadows.
Probably because they didn't have a design to be a guideline for the animators. The even had sculpted Beast and Belle's busts in order to have an uniform character design
i keep rewatching 2:56, its so... im always in awe of glen's rough animations!! the flow, the timing, adam's weight and mass despite being weightless--its a beautiful scene! and maybe it's just me, but i think i'm seeing a bit of tarzan's angular jaw and nose in adam too?
The Prince has character. He's not simply a Generic design like so many Disney Characters. I always really liked it, especially from an artist's perspective.
You thought you were the npc~ Explaining nothin' just a being~ But than you realized~ The whole thing was a lie~ Your voices crack me~ The creepy faces hurt me~ Talkin' back at me~ Acting like your the good one there~ Acting like you don't hurt me~ Acting like you know everything when you don't~ Say you think he is pretty when you talk about him at the back of his head talking about him like he is dead~
I remember watching this with my friends at a sleepover, and when he turns around for that shot, we couldn't help but laugh, and I rewound the tape like 4 times so we could watch it over and over and fall all over ourselves and how he was supposed to be handsome but was just weird. Good memories.
My cousin and I did the same thing with the ocean storm scene in "Anastasia" when Dimitri slams into the ship's corridor wall, and again when he shouts out to the sleepwalking Anya from the crow's nest. 🤣
Literally the best animation transformation scene in animation history. Look at many recent Disney movies today, DOES NOT COMPARE to this!! he’s straight up hot to me
Honestly, me too. I also found him the most natural looking, contrary to the overly princely looks of other disney men. So yes, I found him pretty handsome
WOW, glen’s pencil test of the transformation is stunning. I’d never see it before. Also, it’s wild to think that SO much work went into 2D animation less than 30 years ago. It doesn’t seem like that long ago, but the difference is incredible.
i think it's because his eyes are soo far apart. So it makes him look kind of strange. edit: i finished watching the rest of the video, and realized he said that.
Loved this video! My sister and I used to laugh hysterically whenever we saw this scene because we thought he looked so ridiculous. But I loved hearing the technical reasons as to why it looks off. Very informative and engaging!
He actually looks STUNNING, he’s one of the hottest princes 😭 as a kid i was so attracted to him. His leonine face is beautiful, he reminds me to a Viking prince
The beast real name is Prince Adam, it’s said in the CD-ROM games of Beauty and the Beast. And it’s been confirmed by Disney, they for some reason just never use it.
Aside from the awkward lighting/shading mentioned in the video, I kind of always assumed that the prince looks odd in that reveal shot because he's probably experiencing a hurricane of emotions due to the intensity of the situation. Think about it, he had pretty much lost the will to live when Gaston and the mob stormed the castle, then he lights up when he sees Belle has returned to him, THEN he is stabbed by Gaston and dies in Belle's arms.... and when he wakes up he's suddenly a human again. How does one even process such a crazy sequence of events? I have made much uglier facial expressions in much less dramatic situations, I can't even imagine the shock, disbelief, relief, confusion, happiness that the prince must be feeling in those first couple of moments when he realizes what has happened. Just my headcanon though.
We don't exactly get ample time to grow used to his human design. Honestly, it doesn't look bad just oddly too detailed and realistic compared to the rest of the human characters (I'd say it's just like Aurora when she wakes up and blinks and she has a realistic face and her tiara is gemstone incrusted, only that scene was prettier). I still find the heavy browbones to look off on a Disney Prince, cause it looks like already enough detail to have that specific feature on a delicate face with prominent lips. I think they thought they were drawing from aspects of his Beast design, but it just ended up looking funny. I'd prefer if they animated him with a face that looks less detailed but still handsome more like John Smith or John Rolfe from Pocahontas level of detailed faces.
You make good points except Aurora waking up is one of the most gorgeous drawings I’ve seen. I was so mad as a kid that she didn’t look like that in all of the movie.
This video started and I was immediately like "...actually, Belle looks weird too" when you played the clips of her. I tried to point it out to my friend but she doesn't see it.
My guess would be that his face adapted to being animal for such a long time that when he was human again, his facial muscles were still beast-like. It would take a while to have a more human expression, I think.
Thank you! As a kid I just couldn’t like that scene... he looked too realistic and I felt like their efforts to make him look extremely handsome put him in some uncanny valley.
What's even weirder is the fact that Disney reanimated a few scenes in the lion king that hardly anybody would notice... But they won't fix this scene with the beast.
He's French. His character has traits in this shot that are common to alot of French people, and in fact the final animators were more inspired by Frenchman Christopher Lambert and Italian model Fabio.
His human form always freaked me out as a kid. Especially his eyes. We had just spent a whole movie getting used to Beasts' form - I never understood why he had to change 🤷🏼♀️
My sister and I were mildly traumatized watching the Prince's disappointing transformation. We'd always conclude watching the movie with a remark that he would be better off in the beast form. So glad to find out we weren't the only ones.
They went too hard on his beast form. How could they top that 😆 I do like his human form a lot though, and the processes detailed in the video was very interesting too! Keep it up~
For me, the problem is that the FIRST and most specially frame of the scene it's the weirdest of them all. If you look carefully in other moments, the prince is a handsome character. The major problem is that they messed up in the most important frame to show his beauty . Also, I feel so glad for this video showing me the first drawn of the same scene. Now I can see what was the firstly version of that moment, I remember I was so frustrated as child because the prince wasn't what I expected to be lmao
Beauty and the beast is my favorite disney movie. I was underwhelmed by the human reveal when I first saw it(now I know why). As a kid I will watch it everyday untill the cd was broken.
Funny, personally I always thought the reveal image was the most handsome of his image that was never again recaptured. It gives off ethereal vibes and reminds me of greek and roman classical art with pronounced but soft features.
Glad someone finally talked about this. My siblings and I have been fast-forwarding this scene for years.🤣🤣🤣🤣 Probably the worst crime is that they didn't do any touch ups in the re-releases.
So much thought on the conceptualization of the transformation inspired from Michaelangelo’s masterpieces. Prince Adam’s human transformation is a great homage to the master of the High Renaissance Art period.
I love that you took all the time and effort to make a video about something THIS SPECIFIC. And even more, I love that there are at least 10 THOUSAND people out there who've had the exact same thought lol!
I remember when I was about 4 years old and determinedly told my mom "I want to marry the beast and NOT the Prince". 😂 I always thought that the beast was so cute. There isn't really anything wrong about the prince. It just feels like they took a cute French guy and enhanced some facial features a bit too much, but somehow it matches the structure of the beast's face.
Someone here compared human beast to handsome squidward which I think beat encapsulates where they went wrong. They should have just aimed for a handsome guy and not gone too over the top.
Well as we know he does have a name. It’s Prince Adam. But they name was leaked at some point so Disney will always deny it - Paige o‘ Hara the voice of Belle said so herself. Also as in your Face the first glance at him is, I always thought he was really handsome in all the other scenes... but yeah it’s my favorite movie so of course i say that
Always thought Adam was such a bad name for him. It just wasn’t a common name in 17th century France, especially for someone from the nobility. You got people going around called like Maurice and Gaston and then ... “Adam”. It should have been Louis or Philippe or something.
I’ve asked a lot of people who all majorly agrees that either Prince Eric and Prince Aladdin to be the most attractive princes. But if you lay the sketches of both their face together, you’d get the same looking face.

He honestly looks fine, I just liked to throw humor in at his expense and talk about some of the behind the scenes processes!

Honest to god I thought he was beautiful. He looked very angelic, like a marble statue.
The beast and Prince Adam is the most judged character in Disney for physical appearance even though he represents a character that teaches people not to judge people’s appearance. Even his live version beast is hated. People are shallow af or they’re all secretly furry.
I thought he looked like Tarzan 😭😭
@@ft.jackjimmy7282 just wondering… Do you know where that name comes from? Because many key artists who worked on the film are confused LOL

Also fun fact... There was a dispute between Glen Keane and another animator on who was responsible for the model sheet for Bell. So there was two sheets people were going off of. So every once in a while Bell's face gets a bit more round and kind of pudgy and that's why. And once you know this, it sticks out like a sore thumb
noooo ruined forever lol
I’m going to look for this next time I watch it
It’s interesting how there’s a split in who finds him attractive in this scene, and who doesn’t.
Gotta appreciate a significant other who has multiple forms. Too bad he can't change on the fly!
Saying "change back" also completely misses the point of the entire movie.
Breaking the curse turned him back into a human, not make him look "handsome."
"Are you a furry?"
*sweats*
@@FridayNightSleepover frieza’s girlfriend thinks so too
You can love someone without being attracted to them physically. I believe Belle is the most mature disney princess because she understood that.
I couldn’t stop laughing at the, “Holy sh*t! What happened to this guy!” 😂
This video is ironic because that reveal with the prince’s piercing gaze and almost holy appearance was particularly awe-inspiring to me as a child and always stuck with me.
Same!
Same. LOL IDK what are they talking about.
the holy appearance with the music in the background makes the scene so powerful

His face reminds me of Michaelangelo's David sculpture. He looks fine.
You're right, he does look fine! I just like to use some light humor as a gateway to some interesting animation processes.
@@FridayNightSleepover Cool.
Please stay safe from Her. She crawIs. Do not let Her be forgotten. She saw you. Her arms are still alive.
Amandaishere.jpg
this, totally. he absolutely had a michelangelo look. just look at the angels on the ceiling of the sistine chapel.
I'm glad it wasn't just me that thought this as a kid...
Belle literally SAW his transformation, but was still all "Izat u?"
You see a beast turn human who was literally dying and you're NOT a little surprised?
He never looked weird to me. He just looked like a normal European.

But he's nobility, wouldn't that make him the byproduct of incest?

Good source. Seems legit.
Yes! And give those talented artists enough time to make their magic!

Saaaame !
Ahhh!! This was a good explanation. I definitely thought he looked weird and not that attractive as human there. The final reveal was a big disappointment for me as a kid. I was like “ugghhh!! He’s not as cute as Eric”😂😂😂
I wanted the prince to have facial hair in his human form, just so he looked a little closer to his beast face and not so jarringly unfamiliar.
A beard would have been nice
Yes! If he had had a beard and a deeper voice (and maybe darker hair) I think everyone would have been on board.
yeah I mean it's hard to picture this guy scarfing porridge straight from the bowl but that's literally what he was doing a few weeks ago
Was just about to say. Better with a beard dot com.
But he is also a product of his time. Facial hair at least in the 90s wasn’t very popular.
Along with Naveen and Li-Shang, he's literally one of the hottest Disney princes.
as a beast, definitely
And Eugene!
@@o.m.g7277 he's not a prince but he is pretty attractive.
Amen, Li-Shang was the start of my particular appreciation of Asian men.
yES PRINCE NAVEEN
My momma told me i would cry uncontrollably when the beast revealed his unbeastly face.
The thing I thought was weird about the Prince was that he seemed to look a little different in every shot. I just wished they had drawn him more consistently as he moved. I do like the way he looked in this shot but it does look better with the shadows.
I think there was one animator animating the prince and he basically was designing the character while he animated him.
Never thought he looked weird. He looked otherworldly, like an angel.. But that's to be expected after breaking a curse like that.
The Prince has character. He's not simply a Generic design like so many Disney Characters. I always really liked it, especially from an artist's perspective.
Me too
Belle when she finally sees his human form:
"go back, go back!"
I 100% thought this hahahahah!!

"Belle...it's me... ....Michael Bolton."
(I'll never forget my ex adding the Michael Bolton part after I tortured him making him watch this lmfao 🤣)
Literally the best animation transformation scene in animation history. Look at many recent Disney movies today, DOES NOT COMPARE to this!! he’s straight up hot to me
I've always thought he was one of the more attractive Disney men.
Ariel's husband looked better.
Hell, John Smith....looked better
Honestly, me too. I also found him the most natural looking, contrary to the overly princely looks of other disney men. So yes, I found him pretty handsome
WOW, glen’s pencil test of the transformation is stunning. I’d never see it before. Also, it’s wild to think that SO much work went into 2D animation less than 30 years ago. It doesn’t seem like that long ago, but the difference is incredible.
i think it's because his eyes are soo far apart. So it makes him look kind of strange.
edit: i finished watching the rest of the video, and realized he said that.
The lips
Loved this video! My sister and I used to laugh hysterically whenever we saw this scene because we thought he looked so ridiculous. But I loved hearing the technical reasons as to why it looks off. Very informative and engaging!
He actually looks STUNNING, he’s one of the hottest princes 😭 as a kid i was so attracted to him. His leonine face is beautiful, he reminds me to a Viking prince
Right ppl are just haters😭
He traumatized me as a kid, but go off
Vikings looked nothing like this...
IKR!!!! I LOVE HIM AS WELL!!!!!!!!! 😍😍
The beast real name is Prince Adam, it’s said in the CD-ROM games of Beauty and the Beast. And it’s been confirmed by Disney, they for some reason just never use it.
The sketch looks so good, better than the final image
Wtf he is the hottest prince with that luscious head of hair and those pillow lips
Always thought there was something off about his face in that scene. Glad I wasn’t the only one 👍🏻
As a kid I cried when he changed to his human form. I was so heartbroken that the beast was gone.
I feel so validated for liking him in his human form. It felt like no one felt the same way. Glad I’m not the only one.
@@BbGun-lw5vi I agree with you about that, she looked beautiful in that scene.
You're talking like this happened for real 😆
I love this explanation. Thank you!
1:18 I was like, “haha good wish reference” but then I saw it was made 3 years ago
His human form always freaked me out as a kid. Especially his eyes. We had just spent a whole movie getting used to Beasts' form - I never understood why he had to change 🤷🏼♀️
Think Disney couldn’t legally romanticise beastiality in the 90s
Because the prince himself (and his staff) all wanted to become human again?
This is called Stockholm syndrome.
To be honest his beast form also looks handsome
@@tinaloye2014 there was no way parents could explain how you could be in love a different species of a human and beast.

Yup. Her face and eyes change so much from frame to frame that I wish it was fixed cause I love the movie so much.
When I was young, this was my favorite movie EVER but I still thought the human prince looked weird.
My sister and I were mildly traumatized watching the Prince's disappointing transformation. We'd always conclude watching the movie with a remark that he would be better off in the beast form. So glad to find out we weren't the only ones.
Yes, you are not the only one. Maybe he is not unattractive, but not what you might expect from his beast form.
And Belle has always been my favorite Disney Princess and I felt bad for not liking her prince 😅
I wish he kept some beastly qualities lol at the very least they could have given him a scraggly beard that he could shave later 😂
He is supposed to turn into a handsome prince very different looking from his beast form.

This was hilarious 😂 and very informative. I never could put my finger on why the prince looked so weird. Great video!
Thanks so much! There will be more videos on animation, film, and more!
Funny, personally I always thought the reveal image was the most handsome of his image that was never again recaptured. It gives off ethereal vibes and reminds me of greek and roman classical art with pronounced but soft features.
He's literally a beautiful man.
Glad someone finally talked about this. My siblings and I have been fast-forwarding this scene for years.🤣🤣🤣🤣
Probably the worst crime is that they didn't do any touch ups in the re-releases.
Same here! 🤣
Glad I'm not the only one who was underwhelmed at the sight of prince Adam's visage
1:00 Can we just take a second to appreciate that one of the animators who worked on the Beast was named "Geefwee Boedoe?"
also, "broose" johnson lol
I always found him to be one of the most handsome prince of all the Disney princes. I just assumed his look is because he was in shock for his change.
I wanted him to have dark hair.
After seeing Beast in prince form Belle is like “ooooooo....is it possible you can turn BACK into the Beast?”
@@thelouisfanclub It would be funny if his name was Philippe since that's also the name of Belle's horse.

I was seven yrs old when I saw the movie with my mom at the theater. I clearly remember telling her "he was prettier as a beast"
I thought he was cute but Prince Eric is the most handsome Disney prince IMO lol
Nah man that title goes to Prince Naveen😤😤

I’ve asked a lot of people who all majorly agrees that either Prince Eric and Prince Aladdin to be the most attractive princes. But if you lay the sketches of both their face together, you’d get the same looking face.
