People that say there's no science in art are so wrong, anatomy is freaking complicated and even more when you start making animals and made up beings.
One piece of advice I've gotten from an industry professional that helped a lot was when it comes to turnarounds, sometimes looking good is more important than looking accurate. If Mickey only had a single ear on his side profile, he'd look weird as hell.
That’s some solid advice! I’d say though that it’s even more important for the character to look like themselves from every angle! Thanks for sharing! ✨🙏🏾✨
Dude, I NEEDED to hear you say work towards likeness instead of geometric perfection- I thought I SUCKED at character turnarounds because of how I couldn’t get the individual facial features or individual fingers to lineup with the features and fingers on a different view
hm, maybe you can just draw the first half on one side, and then you fold the paper and press down to make an imprint. then all youll have to do is trace the light imprint and make any edits, hope this helps :]
I'm animating a character turnaround at the moment too and here are some things i noticed as well 1. torso is biggest in front view and thinnest in side view.. so 3 quater will be bigger than side but smaller than front 2. head is thinnest in front view and biggest in side 3.feet in side view will be centered as compared to the front view and hands as well
You’re exactly right! There’s a reason she’s got a score to settle! You’ll definitely see her in more of my videos. I might even animate her! ✨.@@joshuaadeoye
It's funny that my process is sort of the opposite--- I sculpt my characters in 3D using Blender and then use that model for my drawing reference when I'm creating comic boards. Uploading the 3D models to Mixamo to get my characters in a specific pose also really helps. But I've also run into having to alter features slightly for better likeness, so my technique definitely isn't perfect.

I'd like to add, another example of drawing side profiles to their likeness and not to geometric perfection is the 3D animated Peanuts movie! Pretty much every character's facial features move around depending on what limited angle they're in to capture the same likeness of them from the comics and shows. Just thought that was neat :))
