  • In Part 2 of my study on Hercules, I'm discussing how Meg and Hercules fit within Joseph Campbell's narrative structure of the Hero's Journey. Does Meg qualify as a hero? How is Hercules different from other films about mythical figures? Tune in to find out!
Find Part 1 to this video here: • Megara: Disney's Unsun...
    Sources:
    Disney's Hercules (1997)
Joseph Campbell's The Hero with a Thousand Faces, Third Edition (2008)
Christopher Vogler's The Writer's Journey: Mythic Structure for Writers, Second Edition (1998)
Last Campbell quote: "The hero is the champion of things becoming, not of things become. . . ." (page 209).

I love the observation that Hercules' journey is becoming and Meg's is overcoming, but their respective journeys are achieved in tandem. Very astute.

@@MediaMortician I really do look forward to what you have in store for the future. I stumbled onto your channel by accident, but I've really appreciated your insight. I've always really enjoyed Meg's character, but was never really able to put it into words, until I watched this 2-parter.

I found this video from a search on the sacrifice of Meg and Hercules and it perfectly encapsulates my feelings on the two characters. Hercules becomes the hero he wanted to be not because of his big deeds but the little deeds of making Meg aware that not everyone is evil (an inversion of Meg's outlook at the start). Hercules saves the day by sacrificing himself for the one, not just the many. And Meg becomes the hero because she embodies Zeus' proclamation of a hero's strength being measured by their heart (she sacrifices herself to save Herc and does it again when she leaves him to the Gods without thought of reward).
I'm just sad that you've not posted anything since then as you really are amazingly insightful. Maybe this comment might spur you to make more videos.

Whaaaaaaaaaaaat?! This video is amazing!!!!!! Why does this not have more views?! 🤦🏽‍♀️ this is beautiful & precisely executed 🙌🏽 this Has to be the first video I’ve found that has went into detail about the journey of the anti-heroin!!!! 👏🏽
Still with a heroes journey of their own but very different and darker from the typical archetype... together forming a balance of yin and yang ☯️
Also: i’ve been obsessed with the heroes journey since I’ve been using it to create my new album lol as I watched Hercules today one thing that caught my attention was the incorporation of the character scar from the lion King. I noticed as Hercules was becoming uninterested in fame, phil couldn’t understand why and when Hercules threw the “throw rug scar” on Phil... Disney captured a shot of him holding his scar with clown makeup 🤡 very clever 🧐 I found it very interesting especially because he was not a main character. All of the characters journeys were literally intertwined ... but bravo to you & Disney 🙌🏽👏🏽

This is an amazing analysis. I kept wondering why I watch Disney's "Hercules" over and over again, even though I know it's way different from the original Greek mythology and did not "seem" up to par with the Big 4. Now I see it's really due to the compelling and complex characters Hercules and Megara, and how they drive each others' hero journeys.
