Amazing insight. I can’t believe how human nature and our struggles stay the same. I always saw the Romans as obscure and mythical, but they are just like you and me. Stoicism is what our young people, particularly boys, need today and new parents. Thank you. I’m so glad I found your channel.
A timely (and terrific) exhortation to the spectrum of benefits inherent in self-observation and reflection followed by effort. It brings to mind the words of a more contemporary sage (Bill W): "These are the sort of fundamental inquiries that can disclose... whether I may be able to alter my own conduct and so adjust myself serenely to self-discipline." Thank you Donald.
Do you realize that Vice here is Heaven? A land that is GIVEN, not Earned - endless days of pleasure, sitting about doing nothing. Sleep because one is bored - yep, exactly Prodicus was asking us to choose life, REAL LIFE, as we know it and not chase after Fools Gold called Heaven Hinduism with the teaching of Reincarnation is doing the same - choose Real Life We can safely say that both Prodicus and Hinduism have failed spectacularly Greed trumps all good values & teachings
Do you realize that Vice was describing Heaven? Endless days of joy, with nothing to do - Heaven is GIVEN, not Earned! You sleep because there is nothing to do - exactly! Virtue of course is asking Hercules to choose Life, REAL LIFE - a life where nothing is handed to us, we have to work hard and EARN what we want Hinduism also preaches the same thing with the concept of Reincarnation - REAL LIFE Prodicus was asking us to not chase after Fools Gold Heaven but to choose Real Life Same with Hinduism We can safely say that both have failed spectacularly
liked the pace of the video. the length was good too. I would like to have been able to read text along with your narrative to ensure I fully understood it, but that may just be my preference. overall a thumbs up.
I like the way you present and read this Donald. The intention behind the exhortation seems very right, i.e. virtue & excellence over pleasure & vice, but I'd like more of these texts updated in parts. Would a contemporary Stoic want their exhortations to be addressed to men only, and for them to encourage men to learn the arts of war? Even 'industriousness in times of peace' makes me wonder whether our environment can cope with more of that. Perhaps I'm being overly politically correct, but I'd like Stoicism to address these issues by considering updating key texts or presenting them with caveats/provisos, and by being less gender specific. As I said, the main intention is great, and you bring it out very well: pursue something worthwhile even if it takes some effort.
Do you realize the Vice here is Heaven? It is GIVEN, because we kiss the right butt, prayed to the "right" God. Endless days of pleasure, nothing to do, sleep because of boredom A "God" who enjoys being a Sugar Daddy - happy to cater to billions of lazy bums sitting about doing nothing Virtue is asking us to choose Life, REAL LIFE - here nothing is given, if we want something we must work for it, sacrifice for it Hinduism with the concept of Reincarnation is teaching the same Both Prodicus and Hinduism is asking us to not chase after Fools Gold Heaven, to choose Life, Real Life over a fantasy We can say safely that both have failed spectacularly
Life in part consist of choices followed by consequences. The easy path may not be the best path. At this time there is a referendum in BC Canada to choose between two electoral systems, First past the post and Proportional Representation. the main selling point for first past the post is that it is simpler, easy to understand and results in clear cut victories for one party or another, no negotiation is needed and many votes are wasted. Proportional Representation is more representative of the vote and results in a broader range of opinions often resulting in more negotiation and consultation and can result in greater participation but requires more involvement by the voter and elected official to understand and implement the system. I think I know which system Hercules would have chosen.

Absolutely fantastic Donald! My youngest son turned 21 yesterday. If he will allow me to, I will share it with him.

Virtue of course is asking Hercules to choose Life, REAL LIFE - a life where nothing is handed to us, we have to work hard and EARN what we want
Hinduism also preaches the same thing with the concept of Reincarnation - REAL LIFE
Prodicus was asking us to not chase after Fools Gold Heaven but to choose Real Life
Same with Hinduism
We can safely say that both have failed spectacularly

Yes, you are being too PC.
It reminds me of the choice between Wisdom and Folly in Proverbs 7,8, and 9.
Thanks for mentioning this. I will look it up in Proverbs later. Thanks, Rick
