Why GMK keycaps?

- How does keycap material alter the sound of your keyboard?
There are many factors but the general answer to that question is one that most keyboard builders tend to overlook, when they aren't achieving a certain sound they wanted.
ABS keycaps (such as GMK) have the tendency to mask case resonance and whether you like that sound or not, that usually means the sound improves.
PBT can "sometimes" sound a bit too deep and too thick in some cases but in others, can sound perfectly in line with "better" quality caps made from ABS.
I have a few boards with PBT and they sound really good, but for some reason my Mode Sonnet's unique sound profile changes to a less desirable one when using PBT. Mostly the space bar and mods suffer. Alphas are just thockier?

I love the higher-pitched light clack sound profile like you'd hear in a Unikorn with mx blacks and ABS works so well for it
I think mx blacks would be great on this too! If you are curious about how to shape sound using other combinations as well, give some of my other vids a watch. QK80 was a good one for clack : )
I do like the feel of PBT more than ABS but depending on the switch I really like the sound profile of ABS more. I think the profile of the keycaps is what makes the biggest sound difference though.
Nice, yeah i'm not saying to only go ABS here in the video but rather specifically with this config. I agree tho for feel and i've found PBT to sound good on many other boards as well
While you will probably see my post as well I finally bit the bullet and bought some GMK sets, got one in today and liked them so much I ordered another. When I got into this about a year ago I was like, I'm never paying those prices. But during that time I've gone from wanting every board to sound "thocky" and muted to every keyboard needs to sound different. I had a Keychron Q2 I picked up cheap, rebuilt multiple times, I like how it types but couldn't get the sound I wanted. I pulled a Mode DCX set (ABS) off another board and it was close so I ordered some GMKs and they are perfect. The sound is exactly what I wanted and I realized I have another board that needs them as well. As you note it all depends on the board, I'm a big Osume fan, love the different looks and they sound super deep due to thickness but I don't want that sound or aesthetic on every board. Sadly I'm now worried I'm going to end up wanting MORE GMK sets and I'm just not sure my wallet can handle it :)
Nice! My best advice I could give anyone in the hobby whether new or seasoned is pace yourself. There's a lot and nothing is "going away" so no point in going wild over keycaps, switches etc and hell you mod a "single" keeb (nowadays) to have many different flavors of sound and look so.. yea. enjoy the journey but be kind to your wallet as well : )
GMK for the win
This is the sole reason why I purchased a WOB from GMK. Tho till this day I still use PBT on my other boards because GMK keycaps are just too expensive.
Nice! Yeah, I think mostly I could go either way too but the biggest reason for me is the space bar.. when it doesnt ship with a warped one : (

GMK is the best
Agreed. Sonnet case has a very particular internal acoustics design, I tried the Key Kobos in there very briefly and it just wasnt the same as GMK

Agreed. Except lately i've been receiving warped 7U space bars. smoge. but yeah, I always came back to GMK on this build.
i like the feel of pbt more than abs but after hearing your sonnet with the abs caps, im kinda leaning towards abs now. im currently using pbts on my fnk v81plus (new keeb!) with akko cream blue pros and they clacc like hell (which i love), but wondering if the sound will get cleaner if i get abs keycaps
It depends, are you talking about mostly the switch? I think I associate cleaner with spring swapping from its stock springs and possibly filming the switch if theres noticable housing wobbly. Akko switches stock are usually already pretty good but the spring is noisy on the pro variants. If you're talking you want to clean up the overall sound of the board, then yes I would try to Abs
hmm I prefer the PBT cap in some cases. I use the keyboard I built and I dont want to change keycaps when I make them shine. Im not in the hobby of collecting so I'll pic them staying looking good over a sound every time. Although, all PBT aren't the same sounding.
I believe that ABS is worth it, but I agree GMK is not the most durable and so I generally use pbt keycaps when I need something to last a bit longer. I do collect but every build I do, I try to make as diff as I can from the last and ABS seems to help with that since sound is my preference. In regards to looks, I also have prefs but just depends. PBT sounds a little too thick for me sometimes but on some of my boards, they surprise me and sound just as good if not better than GMK

Hahaha, yeah even with more and more use, that's usually a non-issue for me as well! Regardless, that still remains one of the benefits of PBT.
Since I prefer a more thocky sound profile I have grown to like PBT a little more! ABS feels better but sound wise I like PBT!

I love the sound of abs I just wish it had the durability of pbt. I guess you can't have the best of both worlds.
Maybe you can! I haven't tried them for myself but I believe Mode keycaps are a mix of PBT and ABS. I haven't purchased because I have mixed feelings about larger legending on them

I definitely prefer PBT over ABS, but I really haven’t ever seen THAT much difference between the real deal and clones 🤷🏻♂️

In this config, there is no pe foam but there was in my original video using durock lavenders

A little cheaper but I tried key kobo recently, and whoa.. really really good for the price

I love the sound of abs but for me atleast all my gmk spacebars are warped
Yeah I really hope they fix that. So many recent kits have them. Luckily, It is an easy fix but just annoying

@@ripmyleg5120 Watch my QK60 video towards the end. GMK bento had a warped space bar. Some recommend a hair dryer or heat gun but honestly theres more risk for damage.. If you are careful, it's possible to twist it back using a hard flat edge.
