Why Is Madison Beer Still Not A Main Pop Girlie?

The question of what exactly makes a pop star successful is a really interesting one. We can all point to certain characteristics that it seems like popstars need. Catchy songs, a unique aesthetic, a strong likeable personality, connection with fans, stage presence, vocal prowess, song-writing abilities, and being good-looking. Except we all know plenty of popstars who don't possess all of these qualities. There are many major popstars who have little to no song-writing ability, some have very little stage presence, some don't have particularly strong voices, but they are still successful in the music industry. So I think we can agree that you don't need All of these qualities. Just some are enough. But then you get really peculiar examples like Madison Beer, where it seems like she ticks a lot of these boxes, but she still hasn't achieved mainstream success. Her most recent album, Silence Between Songs, debuted with only just over 3 million Spotify streams in its first day. By comparison, some other first-day streaming figures are 60 million for Guts, 43 million for Renaissance and 16 million for Portals. Despite seemingly having everything it takes; she still hasn't made it as a main-pop girlie. Today, I wanna break down why that is.

I will tell you why: she keeps doing random things that make her relatable and normal, which is not a quality of a traditional popstar. she hangs out with random youtubers and tiktokers, shes on twitch, she's basically overexposing her brand. its not bad per se, because she's still doing numbers and still gets to live a relateably normal lifestyle.

i don’t think it’s some sort of conspiracy. there have always been pop stars who just aren’t as popular as the biggest ones. not everyone is going to become a massive global star that can sell out stadiums, and it doesn’t make them a failure if they don’t. when Britney and Christina were the main pop girls, Mandy Moore and Willa Ford were the less successful ones even if they got a couple hits and had niche fanbases. Madison seems to be making the type of music she wants to make, so that is a win for her.

Her look has held her back. Obviously she is stunning but not in that approachable, relatable way that many pop girls are when they start out. Madison has always looked like the girl they cast as the beautiful mean girl in teen movies, whereas you could cast Britney, Dua, Olivia, Taylor, Selena, Demi, Miley, Billie, Ariana as the relatable character who you root for (especially when they debuted), even though they are all gorgeous as well. This matters when you are trying to appeal at first to pre-teen and teen girls. It also didn't help Madison with being linked to Justin Beiber, the Magcon guys, David Dobrik which just made those peoples fans view her as competition.

It’s okay to not be a main pop girlie. But I feel like she has a lack of branding that makes her distinct. Same with her sound. The main pop girls have their marketing down to a T. With Taylor swift, you expect nostalgia, relatability, girlhood, very honest but easy to understand lyrics, girl next door. Her writing style is what separates her. she visually has a look to her and although it changes throughout the years it’s still the same. She manages to get that coming of age girlhood experience into a catchy song
Beyoncé you expect perfection, glamour, maturity, mystique, strong vocals. Strong performances that are both vocal heavy and choreography heavy. Her voice is distinct, she has this growl to her voice that she does often, couple that with her southern accent. She blends many different sounds but she takes a lot of inspiration from Africa, southern black aesthetics and sounds. Her blackness is apart of her brand. So is her sex appeal and feminist ideas. And mature subjects like marriage. She has the whole queen bey so now people associate her with bees. Yellow is always associated with her.
Ariana grande again has a very distinct voice, her lack of enunciation, high pitch, lots of runs etc. Her sound is rnb pop adjacent. She has a more girlier aesthetic to her. Cute yet sexy. Over the years she would have a signature look. The ponytail, the half up half down, the cat ears, the crew neck and thigh high boots combo. Now she has a very old money but more cuter and modern.
Madison lacks a lot of descriptive words to her brand she’s kinda all over the place. No look, no sound, her voice isn’t bad but it’s not as distinct as others. Even if you have a strong image and core brand sometimes that doesn’t mean you’ll be a main pop girly but it can almost always guarantee a strong fanbase.
If you can associate topics, aesthetics, genres, even down to colors with an artist they are doing everything right.

i have to disagree. if you really follow her, listen to her music, the lyrics, the production... madison beer is heavy ballads, deliriousness, trauma healing, rick and morty, fight club, alice in wonderland, white, brown & baby pink, frilly socks & bows. she's a song writer, a blend of 60s crooners' dreaminess, lana del rey's sad girl meloncholy, ariana grande's strong but light and airy head voice, sometimes she is tame impala. madison seems to be very intellectual and serious about her music but because of her looks aswell misogyny (ie: men are very much less likely to be discredited because they are attractive, if a man is attractive and talented it's seen as a plus) and the lack of marketing. a lot of people write her off as an "instagram influencer" when she is so much more. as mentioned in the video, i definitely believe if her label made a better job at promoting her finding descriptive words would be a whole lot easier for the general public. not much people care to watch her interviews

@glove3694 Ehile I do agree that misogyny is definitely a part of why she's not as successful as she could be i think lacking strong aesthetic inclination/presence or distinctive style are what make most onlookers write her off as an IG influencer who does music on the side.
She has that LA instagram influencer circa 2016 david dobrik crew style of dressing. Which is to say she looks put together but very casual at the same time.
Even influencers who started off on youtube who want to be taken seriously have evolved in their style, Emma Chamberlain, Hila Klein, Brettman Rock, even the Jenner sisters.

I would like to add that Olivia began her journey to fame with a relatively clean slate. While she had a presence on a Disney Channel series, she was otherwise not widely known. On the other hand, Madison entered the scene during a time when many influencers were venturing into music, resulting in a sound that was somewhat generic. Her relationship with Jack Gilinsky and her association with other Vine and RUclips influencers of the era somewhat confined her to a particular image. Consequently, when it came time for Madison to express herself authentically through her music, a significant portion of the audience had already lost interest in her as a singer, recognizing her primarily as a prominent influencer. Moreover, the unjustified criticism she faced at the start of her career also played a role in this decline, with many people choosing to join the Madison Beer hate bandwagon when it was at its peak.

She seems like a super sweet girl, and very talented as well, but I think her lack of status as a singer isn’t due to her being “too pretty” (which she seems to insinuate and that’s also something that turns people off), it’s due to how she has marketed herself.

I have caught “reckless” floating in my head a few times and she has a good voice but there’s something about what she puts off in her music and her vibe in general (at least from my extremely small pool of knowledge about the topic) that just feels like there’s a lack of deep passion. Also that from what i know of her that she’s always apart of some weird drama either about her appearance or some minuscule thing that’s not that deep. i honestly think Madison’s start in the music industry is what’s holding her back. she first got famous because Justin posted her on his twitter and she responded to it acting like he had just discovered her out of the blue. later on we found out that Madison’s mom is longtime friends with Scooter Braun and that’s why Justin posted her. as soon as we found out she was an industry plant i think that ruined the intrigue for a lot of people. of course that’s not the sole reason, i know a lot of people aren’t even aware of her start but i think she could’ve been a lot more successful if her rise to fame was more authentic and less calculated. if you compare that to how Olivia got famous it’s night and day. people fell in love with her music because it felt raw and genuine. Olivia’s rise to fame is probably just as calculated as Madison’s but the difference is that it wasn’t as obvious.

I've been listening to her music for years but still waiting for her to release an actual "bop" song so she can take off. Her biggest "bop" was when she did K/DA- POP/STARS and that was a huge song in the gaming community when it came out. And that song wasn't even a true "bop" song but it's the closest she's gotten. Since then, she's just released melancholic ballads. Boring, slow/medium-tempo songs.
She makes music that caters to her tastes, which is fine. But she will never reach superstar levels of fame releasing these same type of ballads. She has the beauty just not yet does she have a sound that caters to the general public. Again, her choice to make music that makes her happy and that's perfectly fine. I'm happy if she's happy.
But specifically to answer the question of why she hasn't reached mainstream popularity, it's simply because she doesn't make mainstream music. Not one of her songs are fun, up-tempo, make-you-wanna-move music.

I think the main reason is that she just isn't unique enough. She looks like Ariana Grande, her music has very obvious influences and I don't think she has a single song that couldn't be sung by some other pop girl. Also, she's not under a major label.

Could you make an analysis on Ariana Grande? Like how she went from an ordinary pop star to superstardom? I've always wondered how she escaped that zone... because people didn't really take her seriously in the past. I theorised that it was the Thank U, Next album, specifically the 7 Rings song that boost her career and made her look luxurious? idk how to explain it, but ppl kept referring her as the "biggest pop star on the planet, she can have anyone, etc etc" when the Ethan Slater scandal was happening, and a lot of ppl were saying how The Voice couldn't afford to keep her as a judge anymore too.
Her songs are impactful or great to begin with. Diving into this would be really interesting.

Dangerous Woman, Into You, Side to Side, Greedy. She was pretty much everywhere as people liked her music + multiple hits until the Manchester b*mbing happened
She grief with the victims and helps raise funds to compensate the victims with One Love Manchester. People admires her for that and even at her lowest, she managed to comeback with the Sweetener album
Sweetener alone has No Tears Left To Cry, God is a Woman, R.E.M, Breathin. She produced multiple hits again, and people are astonished
Only by Thank You, Next, she finally solidified herself the stardom status.
Even before Dangerous Woman, she already catapult multiple hits in My Everything album like Love Me Harder, Break Free, One Last Time, Problem. Its just that people finally take her seriously by Dangerous Woman

it's a pity she can't be an "it girl" popstar. seh has everything it takes to be one: her music is original and quality-like, her voice is powerful with an impressive vocal range and impeccable agility, her looks are awesome, her overall aesthetic is gorgeous. some people just can't realise how amazing she is, and that's such a shame. i guess having a problematic career has been the answer to her not being mainstream, but she can't be blamed for that, since it has been about her label and random shit people exaggerate. i love her truly and am happy she gets to be a musician and have fans that support her no matter what.

I think Madison is just so open, self aware and down to earth, that she will always kinda stay humble. That‘s one of the reasons I like her sm. Also - a lot of other GREAT artist aren‘t „main pop“. Look at Marina Diamandis, or James Blake - who even sings in one of his songs „at least I can see the faces of the smaller crowds“. They‘re not mainstream and will openly never strive to be because they‘d rather reach less people with their true creative selves.

She just doesn’t have interesting branding, doesn’t get into any high profile scandals and is just very low key in general. Olivia for example had a huge drama at the same time her music was being releasing. Beyoncé as a young artist also had lots of issues with her girl group and was all over tabloids + her genre was also kinda a unique twist of R&B and pop. Melanie Martinez is one of the most recognisable faces because she makes herself look that way. Ariana Grande had the little girl act going + unique voice, Taylor Swift writes super personal songs and is really nice to people, Harry Styles wears nail polish and skirts + drama from group split… Not to mention some huge pop icons like MJ, Madonna, Britney and Gaga who are super recognisable in every way possible. Justin Bieber became famous for being a really talented kid, Doja Cat was taking the p*ss in her songs, Katy Perry had a cartoony vibe and lots of publicised drama, Disney girls had a whole generation of growing up Disney fans to support them after they ventured out…
Madison is doing great compared to how every one of these huge pop stars is right now, so the low key act might be what’s best for her 🤷🏻‍♀️

Right now pop music is basically dead, however, I will admit that her newer stuff is very catchy and pop-worthy. However, she's been a controversial figure for years, so that may deter people from taking her seriously as an artist/singer.
I really think people need to give her another chance. The releases she made recently and the music route she's taking kind of reminds me of the aesthetic of a young Lana Del Rey, sonically at least, IMO. I like quite a few of Madison's songs and I really like how she's been taking a page out of Lana Del Ray's book recently by shifting to a more nostalgic and ethereal sound. As far as the beginning of her career, after Justin "discovered" her she was picked up by a record label to fill an Ariana Grande market for her record label, which is why I think she's still plagued with Ariana Grande comparisons. We've seen this happen before where a pop artist blows up and then other record labels rush to find artist who can fill that demographic and market demand (ex. all the Britney Spears copycat acts in the 90s). However I don't think Madison wants to or is even capable of replicating the Ariana Grande success she was supposed to fill for her label. Not being able to explore her own sound early on is probably why her debut album took so long to release.
I think the problem with her not being heavily pushed by her team though is because she's not the most gifted live singer. This really isn't hate she sounds good on her albums, but after discovering her through the internet and finding her music I wanted to see how she sounded live with no track, and she really doesn't sound great. Most of her "live" performances are prerecorded or clearly backed with a heavy track and in the videos I've seen where you can hear her sing, her vocal trills are clunky and she sounds very nasally. I think she's found a solid following for her music and she's amassed a huge following for her appearance and social media presence, however that does not seem to translate to mainstream global success with her music. And I think that's fine, she's successful enough as is. 🤷‍♀
Also please be kind in replies. I only wrote that out because I enjoy her music and that's just my opinion on her as an artist.

I feel branding is important, Taylor Swift is always Taylor Swift, so is Adele, Beyonce, Ariana like all of them have this thing that you just know whatever era they go into its always that same brand they had from the start, but it branches to different styles of it but they're still in the same form, Katy was once good at this, since she changed her brand, her songs plummeted, badly at that. She tries to rebrand herself into something unlike the personality we once knew. You shouldn't stray too much from your own brand that built you up, it becomes ground zero from there. I see it currently happening closely to Doja Cat, when she rebrands herself you can feel the old listeners are trying hard to listen to her again, as they have to retrain themselves cos now she's a different brand/person/vibe. Many people who rebrand themselves had to start from the beginning. I felt charli xcx was also that way, she was this cool edgy classic voice then she changed & rebrand herself as a futuristic sound, people don't hear her as much anymore cos people who listened to hear was accustomed to the song they liked about her & the brand she built, now they're all have to find new listeners who'll like the new sound/brand.
Edit: to add Lorde is also a great example, when you stray so much from your brand everything just falls down, cos you need to convince people that this new version/brand is better than before, it's not like they're a new clean slate artist who nobody knew, we grew to listen to their aesthetics then suddenly it changes.

She also associated herself with tiktokers even going as far as being in their music videos hahahaha it’s crazy she even had monster high on her back she was so set to be an Icon main pop girlie / girl is really about tons of success as a pop star and she doesn’t have it she has her own color and vibe she’s good looking and skinny but I feel the public is confused and tired with her but it’s taking too much effort to allow her in ??? Idk
