Dang, seeing Dark Bowser reminds me of that Bowser's Dark Story mod for Paper Mario. A rom hack that never got to be finished because the owner left it in the hands of his group, but they abandoned it. The YT channel for it also no longer exist.
Oh that would've so cool to see. It's a shame it never came to be
"One of the hardest Paper Mario ROM Hacks ever made"
....
"Master Quest" looks from a distance, staring menacingly.
Jokes asides, I do agree Dark Star is the best, and probably can be harder if you add on all of the challenge modes. But dang, Master Quest will always live down in infamy as one of the most brutal Paper Mario experiences one can experience.
Goombario's tattles have new dialogue for bosses that tell new things the mod added to the fights.
Yeah he gives incredibly valuable information in this mod
This was and is the best paper Mario you can’t change my mind
It really does stand the test of time. I always enjoy playing the game
ttyd
If you enjoy pain, that is
the wack part bout DSE is that bob-uke in chapter 1's legit the best enemy to farm for star points til the max chapter 1 level, and that deff takes awhile.
and then the bosses,
while most are basically ripped from master quest, the Dark Bosses+Anti-Squad Rival arc(from chapter 5 onwards),
Dark Temple arc, and Light temple boss rush are some pretty unique things, including the custom super mario rpg music ost for those temples.
the curse badges that increase enemy stats+star points relative to the combination of those 3 badges+Mario's current level are the most rewarding thing, I'm thankful there's actually videos about some of the bosses and minibosses using the curses for max star point gains.
I can also confirm that the toad town sewers 3 dark koopas, namely the first 2 since they don't have a spiky gloomba, with all curses equipped and a power quake is a guaranteed 2 free levels.
the last one w/spiky gloomba needs super+ultra curse(green hp bar) and to inflict dizzy. this's the only place where the free levels are guaranteed.
the pit of 100 trials boss is deff by far the most unique boss in the entire game, the best part being that boss's rebattleable
(I went through the pit twice to confirm it could be rebattled, and to my surprise they were!).
makes me wish it had the TTYD Doopliss track the dev was unable to implement, yet Bowser's theme, "Angry Bowser/Bowser's Rage", fits really well for it.
Recoil throw's deff the best badge in the game
while mega-bounce deff needs savestates til you get just the right amount of bounces, but its really fun save-stating that to see how far you can go with it.
the hardest part bout the game, next to giga-bowser(the longest-fight in the game), is deff the light boss rush, that Beestroyer's one of the hardest parts since it requires a perfect enough mega-bounce.
I also really liked the Dark items, the Dark Star Cake's one of the best ones in combination with normal Star Cake.
even the normal Dark Shroom has some very nice uses.
the Dark Badges are deff my favorite in the game, they're very uniquely powerful and I really like them.
Buzzatrice's deff one of the best partners in the game due to her hustle spell, its satisfying learning the sound cue of when to hold A to always reach max hustle spell gauge without the insane recoil damage.
its about 1-1 1/2 seconds after she starts, you'll actually be able to learn it pretty quickly after listening to the beginning sound effect.
from a difficulty standpoint DSE really is essentially Master Quest but with a lot more freedom and especially, Darkness.
but that freedom's what I actually really appreciate about it, being able to solve a lot of battles in some very unique ways,
thus the game's deff easier than master quest to some extent, esp at endgame with all them broken badges+The Dark badges.
I appreciated the unique lore in DSE too via the dev notes.
it really makes me wonder how it all could've looked according to the dev's vision from prologue/ch. 1 onwards if they had the ability to make it.
Green gets up instantly. Yellow is electrified. Black has extra defense. Red can attack twice in a row when he's not in the tower and has fire immunity.
I wish the base game boss was dynamic like this.
I love how when the yellow one lies down, he looks like he's dead from electricution lol
With basic enemies, I struggle with the bosses even after beating it, lol.
Dark Star Edition relies on hard but fair due to how Bosses do things have some sort of order while Master Quest is hard for hards sake.
Dang, I can't believe I've never seen or played this mod. I've seen Master Quest, but not this one. Sounds like the perfect one for me
Paper Mario 64: TTYD’s Hardest difficulty is virtually impossible… so I’d love to see you try that next 😁
It's in the works
I don't know why your Dark Star videos appeared in my recommended, but I'm glad they did. I played this mod a couple years ago. For some reason, I decided it would be a good idea to take both the Greed Stone and the Badge Stone for my first playthrough. It was really difficult, but I had a lot of fun trying to complete every challenge with them.
Any advice for doing either challenge or both? I think I want to play through one challenge and then the other but not sure which would be more fun. Or even how to go about it yet.
@@noahfranck3562 Not really. This was a couple years ago, so my memories are a bit hazy. Taking both means you will permanently be capped at 5 HP, but you can equip 20 badges, regardless of cost. The HP Pluses turn into FP Pluses, so you’ll have plenty of FP to work with. You’re always in Danger, so the corresponding badges will always be active. Shroom Cakes are amazing, giving you a full heal every turn.
Bob-uke is op lmao...they dont want you having that badge easy xD also,G ninjakoopa has half the time being knocked down as the others + immunity to quake type damage i believe
Yeah it was annoying that he got up after every turn so I had to focus him in the beginning. I somehow didn't see the immunity to the POW block. Interesting stuff
@@BertBro Yeah..I do have both MQ and DSE downloaded but have yet to play...i do like all the changes and editions since i grew up on and completed the OG paper mario so many times
@@Crystals10000 I normally do a playthrough of OG Paper Mario every year and I wanted to change it up this year and the mods are so worth it. Definitely boot them up and play them you won't be disappointed
@@BertBro ik i wont,i have watched them before its more of a matter of time to do it.
Finally someones done a full narrated series of this. Im way too much of a casual to try this normally, hell, I havent even played PM64, Ive only played TTYD, but Paper Mario has a very high skill cieling, and its fascinating to see players push the game to its limits.
Imagine if it did like undertale hard mode and changed the regular encounter battle theme and each enemy's appearance was replaced with a stronger-looking variant
That would be dope
Two things about the curse badges:
1. It's actually possible to cheese certain fights due to enemy mechanics, such as being able to permanently flip koopas by repeatedly jumping on them, or bob-ombs (other than the bob-uke) instantly exploding from fire and bomb attacks. If you find a fight that exclusively contains these cheeseable enemies, you can equip all 3 curse badges for the 9x hp/attack and star points/coins multiplier, then just kill all bob-ombs with a fire flower and keep koopas flipped with mario (and goombario if there's 2). You'll get a ton of coins and enemies even giving so much as 2 star points normally will give 18 with all the curse badges. This can even lead to getting 80-100 star points per battle when fighting the dark koopas protecting the chapter 3 blue pipe when you can access it after getting the super boots.
2. For some reason, the curse badges affect certain damage outputs. If you use spin smash or bombette after super ranking her and getting the same effect on body slam, the 1 damage dealt to behind enemies from the knockback gets multiplied by the curse, so ultra curse makes it deal 2 damage, mega curse makes it deal 3 damage, combine both for 6 damage, and equipping all 3 curse badges makes it deal 9 damage. Again, you can use this in the battles fighting dark koopas protecting chapter 3's blue pipe (at least the two battles consisting entirely of grounded dark koopas), equip mario with quake hammer to keep all the koopas flipped and use bombette to use body slam to hit the front koopa for a bit of damage and the one (or two) behind it for 9 if you have all 3 equipped. There's also a move badge you can get in the post-game area that gets affected by the curse multiplier when self-damaging you, normally it's a borderline op badge without the curses, but isn't at all worth using if trying to use the curse badges because you'll take more self-damage.
I never knew about the spin smash/ body slam thing. Incredibly useful information my dude I appreciate it!!
Paper Mario modder here! The reason the curse badges increase damage inflicted by spin smash is due to the damage it deals being treated internally as if the attack originated from an enemy rather than mario. The curse badges are implemented so that they just apply their modifier in the damage calculation since that is way less time consuming to implement than manually adding a multiplier to each individual enemy attack.
Will you play PM Master Quest too?
I mean, for hard modes, there’s also Master quest
Would you recommend playing this instead of randomizer for difficulty?
What are the names of new enemies from this chapter?
Indeed this was difficult!
This or TTYD 64 which is better?
0:00-
I mean, it's not one of my *favorites* per say, but I am a bit bummed out about Megaman X Dive offline not having any sort of harder difficulty option.
It's a mod of a mod
pro mode. Master mode
If you ever find a way to make chubby guys go viral on OF let me know
The chubs will find a way to profit I know it lol
"one of the Hardest romhacks"
....
Master Quest: hold my beer
Master quest is for me harder but I hate that it's mostly only enemy spamming and 500 attack enemies
Even on discord everyone disagrees with me, but for me masterquest was harder than this mod.
I haven't played Master quest yet but I was told it's not necessarily harder than dark star, it's more about when the difficulty really increases. I watched some people play Master quest and I kinda agree with you that it's harder just based off of what I've seen.
@@BertBro the post POSTgame stuff of this hack is almost impossible if you dont have perfect strats for every fight. The "light chambers" i swear are so hard, i dont believe the discord ppl that say they beat it lol
@Kaitri yeah the light chambers took me forever to do and I couldn't complete it without save stating in between battles.
Light boss rush is wild lol..i feel like people think MQ is harder because it ramps up in a different way and has alot more fights that test your ability to guard/have solid strats@@BertBro
@@BertBro oh youve already finished the entire hack? Nice :D
Bro please fix your mic.
He sounds fine...
@@Crystals10000
He just needs a compressor and a little bit of EQ on the high end. It’s not the microphone just the settings, you can get use to it though, I’ve heard worse.
@@ClassicBentobox fair enough,it doesn't bother me personally
