- Take Paper Mario 64, buff old and new enemies to absurd levels, then rebalance Mario's overpowered strategies, and you've got one of the most difficult hacks of all time: Paper Mario Master Quest. A lot of people requested I give this a shot, especially after completing Pro Mode. We completed a 100% playthrough of Master Quest on my Twitch livestream in October 2019, so here's the first half of the highlights!
After Clover released the Star Rod modding tools along with Paper Mario Pro Mode, mod developers began working on their own games. For a time, Clover was absent from the scene, and a small community worked to expand and create a much harder version of Pro Mode, adding to some of Clover's assets and ideas. Considering the name "Pro Mode," there was a push to make the game extremely difficult. Mistiming a crucial block is certain death. This is the story behind Master Quest, which is still being updated. Emperor_Thamz, Rainchus, Brotenko, JaThePlayer, Purseit, and TwoPieRadian have put a lot of work into it!
Master Quest was made specifically with the best Paper Mario players in mind. It's so ridiculous, that its own developers prefer playing an easier version of the hack in development: Master Quest Junior. This variation will be released alongside the final build of Master Quest, and will have all of the same additions, fights, and mechanics as Master Quest. But enemy attack power, health, and defense is scaled back to... acceptable levels. Master Quest Jr. will still be harder than the original Paper Mario, just not as pain-inducing as Master Quest itself.
It is worth mentioning that Clover has returned to the scene and is actively working on Paper Mario: Pro Mode 2, not to be confused with Master Quest.

I love what they added in and your strategy for the Anti-Guy mob was nuts! every time that I watch one of your videos I learn something new about this game, I didn’t know the Bob-ombs had a special trip animation for a lucky miss and I didn’t know that Fuzzipede heals in the base game. I can’t wait to see how absolutely bonkers part two is.

Just want to say thank you to Stryder and everyone who showed up to his streams for supporting development of Master Quest!
4 years later but I wanted to say how much I've enjoyed the Jr. version so far. I played a lot of PM64 as a kid and while I'm not an expert (obviously, since I didn't opt for the non-jr. version) I still found the game far less engaging without self-imposed challenges, and even then a lot of the encounters put me on autopilot. I've only played through chapter 1 but I've really enjoyed the balance changes the team brought, and it's great feeling engaged with this classic again.
Though I would kind of liked a patch without the script changes -- not because I dislike the new dialogue, I actually like it, but just to satisfy the purists that like the innocent tone of the original. I wouldn't personally use it (especially not on a first run) as I find the new changes amusing and I'm engaged just looking for them but PM64 has a childlike tone distinct from its sequels, and some might prefer it. Overall love it so far.

I just want to say, thank you for all the content on Paper Mario. I've actually never played the game before, but I love learning about how they work. There's something satisfying about knowing the mechanics of a game that you once viewed as a child with pure awe and wonder. Thought it was like magic!
The only game I really understand on a similar level so far would be Mortis Ghost's OFF, but that's mainly because I began experimenting with RPG Maker 2003 and then understanding how it works as I make a game.
Either way, thank you again, looking forward to Part 2!
Sad we never got to see Stryder do vids on Black Pit, Dark Star or TTYD64, but i do love coming back to these videos, some of the best paper mario content out there

I never knew monstar did damage in the normal game because I had the badge that gives you a defense point.

That actually make sense because star is made of rock and stuff so those star kids in a single disguise would actually sting you really hard.
3:10 that is a reference to Dennis Hooper’s role of bowser in the Super Mario Bros Movie. And it makes sense why they would reference it here because the boss doesn’t look at all like bowser, and bowser in the movie doesn’t look like bowser in the video games.

"Too easy" was the main complaint I had against Paper Mario, which I found brilliant otherwise, so I'm interested in this hack.

Actually, I just remembered something interesting that you can do with Sushie. Whenever you're riding with her, if you try going under when transitioning between rooms, the sound will carry over. Not sure if it's a well-known thing, but I certainly enjoy doing it.
Dude! I first found that out button mashing the dive button when I was small and I paused in place caught off guard completely because I never heard the whole clip, and was so used to hearing the amount that plays regularly. I do that every time I'm in the jungle with sushi now :]

I coincidentally just finished watch the last Twitch VOD for Master Quest and I'm so glad I watched the whole thing. Master Quest has great moments the whole way through, it's absolutely ridiculous.
