A Fat American's Ultimate L322 vs L405 Comparison Vid - Who did it better?!?!

  • This is a video I have been wanting to do since I bought the L405 in August of 2023. A compare and contrast of the now classic early L322 and the New(ish) kid on the block, The L405 Range Rovers. As with all Range Rover anorak's, I have had a love/hate relationship with my L322 for over a decade. Bringing the L405 into the fleet has brought some of the same issues as well as new challenges (mostly surrounding the diesel engine).
Follow along as I compare these iconic motors on things like styling, features, and overall driving experience. I hope you like the video and will consider dropping a few comments, a like and possibly subscribing.

Having had 95 vogue, 2003 vogue 2012 vogue and 2013 vogue se I can say they are all incremental improvements the 2012 l322 tdv8 is a lovely car but the l405 tdv8 feels so much lighter and the hydraulic sway bars make it significantly better in twisty roads. The meridian sound system in the l405 is the best of the lot. A lot of the experience depends on the spec/trim level.
The 4.4 tdv8 in the l405 230kw and 750nm still manages 6-7L100 on the freeway.

Chris, there's a lot of Metric numbers in there that I will decode later... I'm wondering if my shocks need replacing. To me, the L405 has a lot more body roll. My son's 2016 L494 has a better or slightly stiffer ride.

Does your l405 have the dynamic response hydraulic sway bars (ace type system the discovery 2 had)?
My 2012 l322 just had adaptive dampers and was more floaty unless you used sport mode to stiffen it a little, however the dynamic response wins every time in my opinion.

Great relaxing video. I’ve got exactly the same spec L322. Bit of a guzzler but love how it wafts down the road. I’m currently weighing up an L405 PHEV as I think that would be a great car for road trips (I live in Europe). keep the vids coming; enjoy your channel.

Adzy - thanks for the kind words! Col Reb will be with me until one of us pulls a biden... I am hoping my youngest's Jeep sells so I can get him a big boy car and get Reb back home. To me the Diesel is the best of all worlds - great fuel economy and great range. It cost me as much as a new Subaru and gets about the same fuel economy - in a MUUUCH nicer package... Thanks for watching and especially for dropping a comment - JDW

@@FatAmericansGuide they are fabulous vehicles. I also have a Land Cruiser (smaller one like the Lexus GX you get over there) and funnily enough the LC and RR compliment each other. really well. Love the Toyota for its dependability and great engineering - it’s our go-to trip car. But the RR always conjures up a sense of occasion. They’re just nice places to be in.

I have an 08 L322 SC which I certainly enjoy driving. I think the L322 has a more distinctive shape. The only thing that does not impress me is the HVAC system. It is not really a climate control system as you cannot set a specific temperature. The numbers on the dials are just relative, 24 being warmer than 22 but not exactly 24 degrees. Then there is that horizontal wheel to further confuse things...

It was 16 years ago! To be honest... I go from all the way cold (60ish) to about 72ish to all the way hot... I come from the old slider bar with the red and blue triangles... Cars in the 80's didn't even pretend to set a temp - it was just Hot medium or cold... I have never tested the L405 for an actual temp. I go from 59 to 65ish to 72ish to HOT. Thanks for watching! If you like the stuff - subscribe - more L405 content coming soon. I am coming up on a 110k mile service. - JDW

Well I owned a 1990 Nissan 300ZX twin turbo when I lived in Ontario in the 90s. When I was in Florida in October I had the temperature set to 20C and the AC was on. Driving north I got to Tennessee at night and the car automatically switched to heating to maintain 20C. That is real climate control. My brother has that car and everything still works.

I appreciate the "agricultural" roots of the L322, as you say it is so unashamedly a *Range Rover*. Later models are excellent automobiles, but every generations seems less and less "Range Rover" if that makes sense. So it seems to me the first three generations of Range Rover are the ones that live up to the image and idea of the original. Things change I suppose, and perhaps the current new Land Rover Defender is supposed to be a sort of spiritual successor to both the old Defender and the old Range Rover, idk. But there you go.

If we could get the 4.4 diesel in a 2012 L322 in the States - I think that would be the true Ultimate Driving machine... Love the boxy-ness of the L322, but I have to say that since my son has had the L322 in Nashville and all I drive is the L405... it is really growing on me. I'm getting old and soft... In theory my camera does 4K - here is what it says... 4K-Ultra HD 60FPS 24MP. I am wondering if it is something I am doing in my free video editor(OpenShot) I choose the 'profile of FHD 1080p 59.94fps 1920X1080 59.94 16:9 SAR 1:1 - whatever all that means... it has a 4K UHD 'profile' but it already take 2 hours+ to convert to a RUclips movie... Any suggestions?

@@barrytemple808 git'im Barry! Allow me an allegory if you will... Police Dogs are awesome at what they do - no one denies that. As a "Man's Best Friend" - well they kind of suck. You want to try to snuggle up with a Belgian Malinois? I hope your carotid/femoral artery(s) are sheathed... They are so overtrained on the 'mission' that they have no personality... A Toyota is similar. They are Uber Reliable(not sure what the Japanese for uber is...) but they have had the personality beat out of them... as Bane said - “...you YotaBos think darkness is your ally? You merely adopted the dark. We Land Rover Owners were born in it, molded by it. We didn't see the light until we were already men, by then it was nothing to us but blinding!” Every drive - be it the Pan-American Highway, The Silk Road, or a simple trip to Dunwoody Liquors - is an ADVENTURE. You can't match that in a YotaBo... I'm hoping to do an Oil Change video in about 1K miles to connect with the YotaBos - @amrathhussain7411 Check back Often!
