The original 2 door Range Rover is now highly sought after and at the time they managed to combine superb comparative performance with relative simplicity. So although thirsty they were durable and comfortable. But depreciation on everything since has just increased as complexity and unreliability increased. I would not buy one. And today it's now very difficult to consider any new vehicle. They are all increasingly terrible.
Seen a 2-door LHD for €3000 in Girona; no rust (it lives in Spain), top notch bodywork. Only prob is that it is a 2.4 VM diesel (I've already blown one of them up in Belgium on way back from ski trip to Austria, long long time ago). But I'm definitely tempted to give the VM engine another crack - t'will only be my Sunday car after all.

P.S. I would take the first one back any day, although the fact a good one is worth a new one these days might be something to do with it, as it certainly hasn't got the toys of the new one. I have 2016 l405 now as my daily, just over 100k miles now and no real problems that aren't usual wear and tear and I always address and check everything, as I' quite handy being able to do most things myself. Worse thing was a leak on windscreen caused my amp to fault and that how I discovered it. I stripped out the passenger side myself and fortunately dried out my amp and connectors and got away with not needing a new one. Got a new windscreen under insurance as it was chipped unrepairable Chinese shite anyway, insisting on OEM and fitted by autoglass. Guess the first owner, as its a one owner car got the windscreen done, who knows where and they sold him a cheapo one or he didnlt insist, as Autoglass said it was a terrible fitment and no surprise it was leaking. Anyone complaining about issues with a Range Rover after100k miles, where they don't get it inspected, check full LR approved service history or specialist (who are actually better if renowned and been around a while) and address any issues as they happen or get non approved garages to fanny about with their cars, is having a fricken laugh, as is doing that with any car.
I would and actually I’d like on one the channel to out next to my RR I think thats a really good question. Engine wise I’d have the 4.4 every time, but space… maybe a Disco 4! I did own a Disco 3 for 3 years when it was new.
Wouldn’t touch a Disco 3 or 4 as the engine will eventually go no matter how much preventative maintenance you do to one, had a 3 and a 4 and crank went on both, oil and filter changed every 5k miles and still went. Joke of an engine in the Disco and also the terrain response in the RR make it better off road.
@@darrenmeddings7484 interesting; what sort of mileage were they? I’ve had five D4s and RR Sports with that engine and never had a problem with it. The only problem I had with the vehicles was the air suspension on the older ones, and dealing with the Land Rover dealerships 🤬
L320 is the same generation but the Range Rover Sport. I think at this period in time, it as based on the same platform as the Discovery rather than a Range Rover. So it has the Discovery engines too.
I have an aging L320 diesel 3.6 V8, 57 plate with 135K miles and a L405 66 plate. I use the L405 for business but still love the L320, better seat position and lovely chunky switches, none of the fancy touch screen stuff for heating etc. Totally recomended ..

No, The Toyota Land Cruiser Amazon is THE greatest car ever made. I know a farm contractor in Ireland who bought one new in 2003, the 4.2L diesel and he's still using it and it's got nearly 700,000 miles on it and he can't replace it. He pulls combine headers around with it and has pulled tractors from field's in it.
@kadiocalc they will have to improve their 'Build quality' ( they are ok for the 1st 4/5 years, then bits start falling off) ,and the security is a joke. It's not just the cars. The attitude of the drivers 🙄, " I'm in a Range Rover, move out of my way" 🤷♂️🤦♂️.
No doubt they are brilliant cars, but I suspect you would have a different opinion if every time you got in it there was an engine management light on showing a fault of one sort or another. This is one reason they are cheap, they are the most unreliable car on the road and this is a great shame as it is lovely to drive, some of the faults (air suspension) have been consistent since the very first models.. if only they would put more effort into solving this sort of recurring fault it would make all the difference.
Thanks for watching and commenting. I've had a Discovery 3 that the timing chain went after 3 years. But other than that all my Land Rovers have been reliable. I do a fair amount of miles too. They have general wear and tear. But I service on time and change worn parts as needed. If you do that, I found them to be great. But you're right, a Land Cruiser would potentially be more reliable. But some how, Land Rover products affects your soul... a Toyota just doesn't!
@@gerryr1893 I do like the L405. Nothing against it. I just think the L405 was the turning point more toward luxury and less function. I like the L322 as it’s the last hurrah to old school motoring before we headed for luxury and screens.

@@ChrisEdworthy 🤣🤣🤣I’ll be honest pal Range Rovers are brilliant to drive when everything works. But that very rarely happens and it’s such a shame. You’d be happier in a Land Cruiser Amazon. You must hate yourself owning a Range Rover and a Rolls. Serious wallet surgery needed on both those cars. Old Bentleys are in that hat too. I’ve driven a 1995 Continental S 1 of 37 cars made. Very cool but I saw the bill needed to put it right and it was more than the deposit for most houses 🤣🤣🤣
Your another person who likes to burn money 😂😂😂😂😂. Please don’t use bulletproof and JLR in the same sentence 😂. Leave that to Honda 👍 Road tax, mpg, service costs, when it goes wrong, all things that make this car the worst car on the road !!!
Eh no, the L405 is I've had them all and multiple versions of each since the classic shape but I do like the L322 in terms of value for money if you buy a 100k plus one that has been looked after you shouldn't lose too much and if your keeping it then if you get 5 years out of it, you are righting it off in value terms anyway, unless it is a mint rare edition. The TD6 version of L322 I had was underpowered. The 3.6TDV8 was ok but I had to chip it. 4.4TDV8 is the best of them. I had the supercharged as well but quickly got fed up with that and didn't see that point of eating fuel in a car that wasn't that fast, albeit smoother than the diesel. The SC wasn't fast or handled well certainly compared to other cars I had at the time. Anything half fast like a Golf GTi chipped could whip it, so don't really see the point of big SUVs souped up like that and people are off their nut paying mad money for a Lambo Urus for example , which is basically my old RS6 in Lambo drag but slower! Anyway it's not what the RR's are for, its about the toys and comfort and sheer comfy driving experience v me going around in one of my modified cars, I've had many form 911 Turbo S's to GTR's to RS to M to AMG to Fezza...I was that petrol head. They however are all about the occasion, the sound, the handling and speed experience and not something you drive daily, albeit you could but wouldn't do your back or fillings much good. I used a few of mine on track days etc but not the Fezza's they were too valuable to be tracking any longer :-) Two completely different perspectives but people that buy SVR's trying to get that form them and these body kits like Urban and Overfinch I used to do are all just a total waste of money and a con on an already massively depreciating car if you buy it new like I stupidly did a few of them. I wouldn't bother my a5rse. Autobiography model at least 4 years old and looked after FSH, one or few owners with all the toys is all you ever need! I suppose these days it makes sense to go for the P4??e models as even more power than SDV8, less polluting, less tax and better MPG by far. So I am considering 2018 model onwards one of them if I change to get the 2018 upgrades but would need to drive it for a few days to see if I'd like the little 2l ingenium matched with batteries that are only plug in charge. MHEV diesel/petrol version may be best option?

So although thirsty they were durable and comfortable. But depreciation on everything since has just increased as complexity and unreliability increased. I would not buy one. And today it's now very difficult to consider any new vehicle. They are all increasingly terrible.
Thanks for watching Hugh, and commenting. Much appreciated
Seen a 2-door LHD for €3000 in Girona;
no rust (it lives in Spain),
top notch bodywork.
Only prob is that it is a 2.4 VM diesel
(I've already blown one of them up in Belgium on way back from ski trip to Austria,
long long time ago).
But I'm definitely tempted to give the VM engine another crack
- t'will only be my Sunday car after all.
And yes dear readers, I bought the 2-door with the VM engine
- wish me luck 😂😂.
I had the tailgate problem and I can’t remember the fix , let me know please.
It sorted itself out. Although I have greased the lach as it was moving too well. All good now. Thanks for watching until the end...much appreciated!
Adaptive cruise isn't needed until you have one that has it. Shame the bluetooth does play music.
2012 4.4 tdv8 on 125k now.
Oil changes every 8k miles yes please.
I use a Bluetooth dongle into the iPod connector. Works a great calls and music all Bluetooth! Have a look at this link, I'm not an affiliate, its just what I bought! www.amazon.co.uk/Airdual-Interface-Adaptor-Connector-Including/dp/B07RMHVJ6P/ref=asc_df_B07RMHVJ6P/?tag=googshopuk-21&linkCode=df0&hvadid=696285193871&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=4793606091717007158&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=1006871&hvtargid=pla-2281435179018&psc=1&mcid=f21012e7ca6d35ec8a20636f9461189e&hvocijid=4793606091717007158-B07RMHVJ6P-&hvexpln=74&gad_source=1
I change the oil every 5k, it’s not expensive and avoids unnecessary wear.
@@brianellis1257 Good bit of advice! Thanks for watching I hope you subscribe!
I would go for a Disco 4 over this RR for the extra space and seats.
BTW you can turn off keyless entry in all Range/Land Rovers
Thats handy to know for a lot of people. Thanks!
Westminster best spec . Great video .
Spend £10 k purchasing one, then another £10 in preventive maintenance🤣
😂 All part of the fun! Congrats on getting one though!
@@ChrisEdworthy absolutely, couldn’t agree more 😎😎👍
What about the l320? Is it as good as
L320 is the same generation but the Range Rover Sport.
Disco 3 owner here. Only 5 speed and the 2.7l but can't believe my dumb luck on how good these things are. Happy for the uneducated masses to keep bitching about them to keep em cheap lest i want another one 😊
I owned a Disco 3 for 3 years. It was great until the timing chain snapped. At just over 60k miles. Thanks for watching. Keep driving Land Rovers!
How does a video of the l332 exist without highpeakautos commenting?
😂 I’m clearly not that privileged! Thanks for watching!
I have just returned to southern spain in my 4.2 sc for the 5th time from bordon hants to here 2.5 tanks of pet.
That’s not too bad. A comfortable ride too!
Obviously there was a crossing from Portsmouth to Caen but with cruise control no pun intended I averaged 24/25mph
Id go for a lexus rx of that era for that money
safer financial choice in my opinion
Bulletproof too. I’m not sure it would have the same effect on the soul!! Thanks for watching!
@@ChrisEdworthy oh yeah , they can be boring but always consistent .
a little bit of inward pressure will solve the mildly embarrassing tail gate opening demo, some practice required.
Thanks for the tip. Much appreciated. Thanks for watching until the end too!!
Be nice if u can get insurance,even if u can,Tesco will at £2600another company quoted £2500 that's for a 2013 model crazy
2013? Is that an L405? My policy for my Range Rover and Rolls is much less than that!
Yes I get that. That's a car I want to own. Might be coming to the channel if it goes well. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Yes mine appears to be
Same as mine then!! Thanks for watching!
I prefer the dial to a `stick` you're not forever resting your hand on it unnecessarily.
That's true, and there's armrests so no need for that
No... i just don't understand the British 'Fascination' with JLR.
It's not just in Britain! It's all over. JLR following in the State is huge.
One day you might, if not hardees.
Driving position ..
Great video and a true Rangey failure. 😂😂
Turn off camera, shut top lid, leave camera off, re-open both boot lids with ease!
Pretty much, that's what happened! 😂 the next day it was fine.
Ulez and insurance costs stops me buying one
Could you go for a petrol version? Would that comply with ulez?
Yes, we have an Autobiography 4.4 petrol which is ULEZ compliant unlike our TD6.
Upgrade your mic when you can
Already done! I hope it's better in my next video release later this week. Thanks for watching and the feedback!
my 1 ear enjoyed the video
Thanks for watching, much appreciated.
They were nice but look very dated now compared with the super cool L405
For me, that's the appeal. L405 onwards are more luxury and less functional.
Prefer my l405 different animal altogether l322 old knackers now
@@gerryr1893 I do like the L405. Nothing against it. I just think the L405 was the turning point more toward luxury and less function. I like the L322 as it’s the last hurrah to old school motoring before we headed for luxury and screens.
They can be moneypits. You need a big wallet for keeping these things moving.
Thanks for the comment, fortunately mine has been good so far.
I've owned probably 20 off these best one ever mate is 06 jag 4.4 rest are shit tbh
@@wayneoriordan6749 Was that the petrol V8?
That's good as I've just picked up an 06 jag 4.4V8 vogue se 😊

@@MrSharpe95 Wow that’s pretty cheap. A lot of car for the money. Keep me posted with how it goes.
No. It's not.
What do you think is?
Officially the most unreliable motor vehicle in the world bar none (Jeep is a close run second)
But I still love them!! Thanks for watching Phil!
@@ChrisEdworthy I’m like that with 911s 🏎️
No it’s nowhere near it. Dacia levels of quality control these things were piles of shite from day 1
If you don't like my Range Rover, what about my Rolls? ruclips.net/video/ZQsYUvQjboM/видео.html
Leave that to Honda 👍
Road tax, mpg, service costs, when it goes wrong, all things that make this car the worst car on the road !!!
I do like a car or 2... emotional takes over from logic!! Thanks for watching.
Worst most unreliable car I,ve ever had , not a patch on a Land Cruiser, I hate them with a passion
😂 I do love a Land Cruiser, I’ve always wanted the 4.5l V8.
"Best car ever made" ? You must be having having a laugh!
😂 what do you think it is then?
I used a few of mine on track days etc but not the Fezza's they were too valuable to be tracking any longer :-)
Two completely different perspectives but people that buy SVR's trying to get that form them and these body kits like Urban and Overfinch I used to do are all just a total waste of money and a con on an already massively depreciating car if you buy it new like I stupidly did a few of them.
Great insight thanks for sharing. I think we agree the 4.4 V8 Diesel is the best engine in either the L322 or L405. Thanks for watching
Agree with you I have a 2019 l405 different league to the l322
