Suck or Drip?!!? A Fat American Answers the Range Rover L405 Oil Change Question
2016 L405 Td6 - Do you use the drain plug below, or the suction pipe in the engine bay?
I have long been a believer in crawling under the truck and dropping the skid plate to get a "full drain" - I didn't want all that nasty oil left behind by the suction fitting mixing with my beautiful clean oil. Follow along as I use the suction fitting, THEN drop the skid plate to see how much used oil is left in the sump.
I also added an Auxiliary 'Earth' strap from the lug under the 'bonnet' down to a mounting bracket on the starter. The bottom of the truck looks great - other than... I unfortunately spotted a slow oil leak - dop a comment on where you think that is coming from.
As always - I will back...

A common problem withe the early/mid Ranger Rover L322's was a steering column locking module that registered a signal from the stalk to the key barrel, allowing it to turn. I tried the wire bypass (blue wire to dome light). It certainly unlocked the key…but the car wouldn’t start. Once I disconnected the wire, the car would then start after pulling fuse 18 everytime. I noticed your video was clipped so I couldn’t tell if you were actually able to start the car after connecting the blue wire to the dome light.

      (I can't reply with a picture... but) My drive has a break in it - which I love for servicing my vehicles. It slopes down pretty good then breaks and flattens out some leading into my garage. I put the single set of ramps on the flatter spot and the other set of tires on the slope - this creates kind of a natural 'pit' for me to work in. With this set-up and the Rovers set to off-road height - I get probably 30" or more to the door sill. Enough for my fat @ss to get under the truck. It is fairly level - but for this 'experiment' I wanted it more level. Normally I only care that it is close... Thanks again for watching and commenting! - JDW

    I've been sucking for years with my MB CDI, I don't miss the mess. I also have a 2016 td6, but an RRS. T6 Rotella is great stuff, I used it for over 100k in my TDI, but it's not the best choice for a low ash, particulate filter rig. I too am looking to go to a 5w-40. But Rotella is API CH-4, that is different from C4.

      @@FatAmericansGuide API CH-4 is for diesel engines "without advanced after-treatment emissions systems". I have not found any 5w-40 ACEA rated c1 or c4, the low ash ratings. So for those that want to leave the 'Dumb-ass', will need to go to mid-ash examples like c2, c3 etc. I'm running C1 rated Rowe oil (dumbass). I did get my oil tested from the td6, very low fuel content. Every time I look into alternative oils, I waste hours researching it. So it's ACEA C1 (STJLR.03.5005 spec) for now)

      So far - So Good with the diesel! I did have a bit of a mess with the DEF/DPF System when I first got it and that was a $2,500 bill!?!? I think the diagnosis was incorrect - now that I am more knowledgeable - but since then it has been flawless. Love the fuel economy. Just did an oil change and serviced front diff last night (Aug 25, 2024). Rear Dif, Xfer Box and Transmission service in the coming week. I bought it at 97K Miles and it is on 110K now. Trying to decide if I am going to do the front Timing Belt myself when it hits 115K... Ever since the VW mess with the diesels, we don't really get that many. Find a good Indy that knows diesels in case you need back-up. My wife had a 5.0 SC V8 in her 2011 L320 - I really did not mess with it, but that thing got HORRIBLE mileage. The Turbo has enough kick for me and the fuel economy is just icing on the cake! Thanks for watching! - JDW

    I have an 08 L322 SC which I certainly enjoy driving. I think the L322 has a more distinctive shape. The only thing that does not impress me is the HVAC system. It is not really a climate control system as you cannot set a specific temperature. The numbers on the dials are just relative, 24 being warmer than 22 but not exactly 24 degrees. Then there is that horizontal wheel to further confuse things...

    I appreciate the "agricultural" roots of the L322, as you say it is so unashamedly a *Range Rover*. Later models are excellent automobiles, but every generations seems less and less "Range Rover" if that makes sense. So it seems to me the first three generations of Range Rover are the ones that live up to the image and idea of the original. Ended up replacing the intake seals and the rocker cover gaskets - big job, but 'while I was in there' also did spark plugs and injectors. The TPMS is on the fritz - but I used the GAP to disable it. how do we 'measure' or know the remaining def level without a gap tool and if the service menu is inaccurate? Last month it suddenly ran low and give me 250miles warning even though the service menu said ~4k DEF left....

    • @FatAmericansGuide
      @FatAmericansGuide 3 месяца назад

      I don't have a great answer on that. I will see what I can find. I'm not saying that the sensors are completely wrong, I just think they throw red herring errors. Rather than saying DEF low... It says Quality error. If you look in the service menu and it has 7500 miles on DEF, I think you are fine. I will fill mine when I get home and report the mileage back. 'They' say to not overfill the DEF, but I have not had a problem with it overfilled. I say fill it to the brim!

    • @FatAmericansGuide
      @FatAmericansGuide 3 месяца назад

      Re-read that on the laptop (I don't do well on the phone). That is quite a discrepancy - you may have a different issue. I think that my service menu saying (right now) 6997 miles to Empty DEF is correct - or close to it. GAP IID says Overfilled - remove 3L and test again. When I was getting the DEF Quality issue the Service menu and the warning miles were counting down together. I just think that the DEF Quality Issue 250miles is the incorrect message. It could possibly be a message to scare you into taking it to the dealer... Friend of mine, his 2016 makes a bong he doesn't recognize and it is booked to the Indy - it's nice to have rich friends... I would recommend filling it until it bubbles out the top of the fill neck. That may take some doing - they appear to get airlocked quite a bit. I don't know if the fill level is detected ultrasonically or if it is a physical float sensor. If it is ultrasonic and you had an air bubble - it could have been reading the liquid level on top of the air bubble, whereas the nozzle wasn't getting head pressure... complete guess. Sorry I don't have a better answer.

      @@FatAmericansGuide yes thanks for your reply. i have been to dealer and shops lots of times the past 2 years due to the quality countdown. the dealer said it was not really a 'quality' thing, which we all know. dealer said it is either too low or the computer sending the def is wrong (too fast or too slow, while too fast can create problems more). later last year, i stopped going to dealer (they told me their diesel mechanic left or maybe they dont want to deal with this anymore, IN forwayne) and i started to go to a shop much closer to me. eg, last week shop said the countdown last time was due to 'completely empty def tank'. it was a easy and relatively cheap fix. so i wonder how i can measure it using my hand as i dont trust service menu 100% now lol .. i read from forum before, like you said, the sensor is ultrasonic can measure bubbles, so now i will keep adding 0.5gal every 2 weeks.. also the engine light keeps popping on, i need to check it and i think its the stupid EGR flow low again.... i will try to reset it but if not working, i dont care as long as theres no countdown....are you in IN too?

      Atlanta GA. My advice would be to get a couple of the screw on bottles and take your time. On the second bottle I removed it about 2 or 3 times, let it settle and then it took more. From what you spent at the dealer, I think a GAP IID would be a good investment. I want to say $575 for 1VIN. In theory you should get 500 miles per liter. If you're going through double that, you may have a bad nozzle. Have you tried cleaning it? 30 min job on Ramps. Also a lot of great info on fullfatrr.com and Facebook groups.
