I love my L322 4.2 SC. I bought it (very) used from a 'specialty' dealer with a list of issues they didn't fix. With the help of the LR community, some intelligence, and decent mechanical skills I fixed them all and for very little money. It is a handsome car, rides beautifully, passes anything I need to pass safely and quickly and always gets me home. It is definitely the the best 4x4 by far, and to my eyes, the best looking.
I love my L322 4.2 SC as well. Only issue I cannot get solved is a leaking current. Every 2 days standing still it wont start. How to find the leak? Btw, no battery control light is burning so I guess it is not the alternator? Any help welcome
What community did you look to? Looking at a 2011 RR supercharged 117k miles. And want to maintenance myself but haven’t found the hardcover book or reliable site.
Best time ever in my L322 was a deeply flooded road with an abandoned Mercedes and Maserati in the middle of it. Water half way up their doors. Raised my suspension and powered through, creating a lovely tsunami all over them.
I have a 2008 Supercharged bought new with about 140k miles now. My experience has a similar ring. Best moments are getting up early for deep powder skiing - when the Cayenne's, GLC's, X5's (pick your foo-foo SUV) can't get out of the parking lot because of deep snow. Raise the suspension, put it in snow & ice mode and crawl out to catch first tracks. 😎😎
I love my 19 year old L322. Reliable as anything else on the road and has never let me down yet. Only problem ive had was the air suspension pump playing up, wouldn't come out of normal ride height, plugged in a code reader, cleared the code and it was back to normal. Excellent all round vehicle. Its even been off-roading.
Having owned P38's and L322's over the years as my wife has a Freelander 2. I have suffered a more "sensible" car for the last 2 years as I thought we couldn't justify 2 4 x 4's. Suffering withdrawal symptoms I suggested we looked at a 2011 L322 TDV8 Vogue SE. What an absolute dream car! It has done 100,000 miles has automatic side steps cream leather interior and is in Galway Green metallic.I was hooked once again.I should have remembered that feeling as you climb into the drivers seat. Remembering, and ignoring just a few issues with my other Range Rovers , the worse being battery drain issues on 3 of them I have now had it for a month and still am as excited as the day I got it. Having enjoyed all your videos I have had the gearbox flush done and intend keeping this as my forever car. There's just no car that puts a smile on your face every time you drive it.
Make sure to service the gearbox very EARLY (fluid and filter), say yearly or at least every 50K miles. It costs only about 300 quid, for this will save you the 3000K quid you'll pay to fix a broken gearbox. To keep the L322 within reasonable costs, service it, service it, service it. Do the regular services BEFORE they are due. It will save you money and trouble in the long run. Clean and maintain the interior and exterior plastics with a good product like 303 Protector. Clean and maintain the leather seats and surfaces with a good leather cleaner and conditioner. It will preserve it, maintain your pleasure in driving it and, again, preserve its resale to boot. All cars will need repairs eventually. Cars that have a good reputation are often car models that their owners love and therefore they maintain them properly. This is no different. Set aside a budget for repairs. They will happen and you'll pat yourself on the back for having done it. See the previous comment.
I absolutely love my L322 2010 3.6 V8. Has the same facelift as yours. I have had a few 4x4 vehicles including a brand new X5 but my L322 is the only one that still makes me smile every time I get in it and drive. I also agree it's a beautiful looking vehicle. Looking forward to the next vid.
I have two L322s both 2007 versions. I first bought my wife a 2007 L322 Rover with the 4.4L gas engine. I loved the ride and the look. Then bought my son his first 2007 L322 4.2L SC. Again, even more powerful with the 400 HP Supercharged engine. And finally bought myself a 2007 L322 4.2L SC. This is the best used full size SUV for a wonderful daily driving experience. I do all my own work which makes this very affordable. That said, its been a wonderfully reliable car and I will keep these til the end. Wonderful on the highway, in the dirt, and on the beach, its the best 4 wheel drive vehicle without any modifications. So, I totally agree with your video, it is truly a wonderful vehicle.
I’ve owed my L322 for 20 years , bought new and now has 216 k on the clock , I have renewed the original gear box at 86k and it’s still going strong . I change the gear box oil every year and possibly that’s the secret . I also drive it to Spain every year for the summer and never an issue . My wife has a Range Rover sport but we go everywhere in mine as I can leave it anywhere and not worry . I can honestly say I will never sell it , I am so attached to it. Maintenance isn’t really an issue I service it every 6 months , 1 small service and then a full service. The new Range Rovers don’t excite me at all . I also own an Aston Martin so I have the best of both worlds . If I could only ever own 1 car then I would choose my L322 all day long
I have 2 of them 4.4 bmw L322 & 4.2 supercharged L322 interior is superb and drive position is also superb ! I have also a cabriolet Mercedes .., so a good alternative in summer time
Well said. I love my 2012 Autobiography with a passion. White/basketball. Everything about it is right, from the front fascia to the bumper, to the fender, to the side panels and all through out. The rear upgraded bumper especially is just something to behold along with the Chrome exhaust tips and the trim molding is just art. It is so proportionate, the hatch window is nice and wide unlike the next Gen where everything Is trimmed down and tucked in weird. I live with both models 2012, 2015 and you can start noticing how paper thin it feels, that weighted feel and the Bulkiness is gone and out the window. I love the L322 and dont forget the Mirrors, square not oval, and last but not least headlight and taillights. I did forget the beautiful seats, center console, dash vents, and the elegant Steering wheel with a proper Land Rover Badge in the middle, not Range Rover with a fake metal backing. I must add the non Delayed throttle response and the way it Wofts around is just natural as it should be. Everything changed as far as tuning goes when they shaved it down 900 pounds in 2013, it was just not the same. Bring back the old style gear shifter please and real buttons. Long Live the L322.
honestly change it once a year and your gearbox will double its lifespan, 86k i didn’t change the oil as I didn’t know you had to , second gear box done 168k miles before it gave way with yearly oil changes
I had a TD6 for 5yrs & loved it. Sadly thanks to illness I managed to destroy it but it protected me. Apart from bruised ribs from the seat belt I was unharmed. I long for another L322 but I'm not sure if it will ever happen. 👍
Hi Sam, another great informative and well spoken video from you. Since I was a wee boy and before I could drive (I'm 57 now BTW) I've always loved ranges. I remember the first time I saw a mark 1 and new one day I would have to own one. Fast forward to last year when my dreams finally came true and I finally bought my 2011 4.4 tdv8 in Santorini Black with cream leather and piano black dash. I was in love right away and literally driving on cloud nine. Best and most luxurious car I have ever owned. Then after only three months of having her some Barsteward for want of a ruder word stole my dream car never to be seen again. This put me off getting another one as I read they are one of the most stolen cars in the UK. I tried an Audi Q7, hated it, a Merc ml350, a VW Tourag, all very vanilla. After watching your videos I realised I'm wasting my time and will have to get another Range but this time I'll definitely be installing a better anti theft device. Just have to talk nice to her indoors and put the petted lip on. All the best pal.
I was having this conversation yesterday! We came to the conclusion the ultimate 3 land rovers were Freelander 2, Disco 4 and the mighty L322. Just seems like the best era of land rover. The 322 has always had a string group of utilitarian users, from farmers to towing where as the 405 never seemed to get that - not sure why - perhaps the 322 was just the perfect design, good looking but chunky where as the 405 was a bit soft looking? I'm loving mine and can forgive the maintenance on the old beast because of all the points you mentioned. I'm hoping the turbos don't needs doing but even then there are plenty of how to guides and it's a well known and documented problem. Planning in buying a set of Grabber at3 for it soon :)
Morning Sam. Great video and all your comments are spot on. We’re on our ninth Range Rover, my wife has a 4.4 L405 and I have a 4.2 supercharged L322. My wife’s roughly does double my mpg, but I prefer mine. I think it still has the better driving position, and feels like a proper Range Rover😉
100% agree with all comments I have had a 2 door I have had a 4 door classic and now I have an L322 with the straihgt 6 I can hand on heart say they have not cost me any more than my wifes car over the years !! The straight 6 is a little thirsty and once you sort the bloody ignition key issue you are well away !!!! You have made me think about swaping for the 4.4 T.D. I just hate all the negativity that follow these cars Just like my T.V.R. Most folk that knock them have never even owned one ... And those that have had one have bought a pile of crap to save a few bucks.. Any and I mean Any car thats cheap is cheap for a reason its knackered !! The trick here is to buy well and spend as much as you can affod and look at the history look at whose selling it all the usual common sense stuff you will then not go wrong with one of these !! My 2 door cost me 3K in 1975 not that cheap but still have it and it still is ok my 4 door cost me 4K 1991 still have it still runs but rust is the issue My L322 cost me 6k 2014 still got it still using it tottal reapir bills not including servies which I do myself because they are not hard to work on £247.88.Insurance on the L322 £180.00 fully comp I am old so that might be the reason ??? I have not even had to change the tyres because if you buy well the tyres could be new as in my case.. So in a nut shell a great car to have A great car to own you will love them if you get a good one get a lemon and may your God go with you No more to say really !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I totally agree with you. I've got a 2012 tdv8, with a mileage now of around 260k km. And it is by far the best car I've ever had. It's not 100% problem free, but nearly. My cars before this was a BMW X6 and a 740iL as well as a Porsche Cayenne GTS. Only the Cayenne could match my L322 in reliability. My BMW's spent far more time at the garage for repairs.
When I decided to buy another range rover. I looked at the l405 and the sport. I also looked at the lr3 & 4 but found a gorgeous 2007 L322 and fell in love with it instantly. I've spent... wait for it. 20k on it. Changed the interior for black. Refurbished the turbos. New alternator and belt. New glow plugs. Full service. New mass air flow meters. New starter motor, new oil and water pump. New gaskets. Refurbished injectors, new manifold covers. New heavy duty battery. Air conditioning re gased, new air compressor. New bags and shocks. Diffs serviced. Upgraded leds all round inside and out. New heater motors both front seats. Range Rover heavy duty rubber mats front back and boot. New interior piano black trim all round. Gearbox service. Derusted arches and underneath and wax oiled too. New door cards front and back. New parcel shelf. New bosh wipers and arms front and back. New washer motors. New front screen. Bonnet bare metal respray. Upper and lower tailgates sprayed. Black badges inside and out front and back. Black gloss range rover lettering front and back. Ebc anti corrosion discs. New ebc pads. New height sensors. New abs seniors. Full stainless steel exhaust. New sport back pips. New hubs, New upper and lower control arms front and back. All new bushes. New hand brake shoes and components. New propshafts. The list goes on. Basically I've got a new vehicle lol. It's soft smooth. Runs like a dream. Last 2 most passed with no advisories. It's such a joy to drive and I know there's not much to go wrong with it for quite a while and if it does ill just get that fixed too. BTW it's a 3.6 tdv8 with almost 200k but runs like it's new

Totally agree. It’s perfect There are cars more comfortable, there are ones more spacious, more practical, more “sporty”, more capable off road. But there’s sure non - that can do so much of the above as good as the RR does packed in a single package!
I’m completely agree. Had exactly the same Model and spec as the one in your video and let It go for the newer shape RR and regretted it immediately. What I want is a capable and tough 4x4 that can take me anywhere, and is fit for purpose but can also be cleaned up and used for a luxury drive and my the L322 did exactly that. The newer models feel soulless to me and without real Purpose. There are built as an executive machine made for the passenger experience, not the driver. I’d have another L322 tomorrow, a true RR in my eyes.
Watched the video & can’t disagree, superb motor. But Sam & reading through the comments thus far, nobody has mentioned the one to look for is the AJV8 4.4. This was the ROW engine (rest of the world) engine for years & was sold by the bucket loaf overseas. Difficult to find in the UK but worth rooting out. Introduced after the BMW V8 & sold in the UK from late ‘05 to early ‘07 plate you get 300bhp, 6 ZF gearbox & 23mpg on a run. I did it for 18mths. No turbos, no egrs etc etc. Oh & if it’s registered pre 23/6/06 - cheaper road tax. Winner 👍
I've had a classic range rover which was my first Range Rover and I loved it, I am Defender guy at heart but have had a P38 (used the engine and gearbox in a Defender) so didn't drive the P38 far. A few years ago I had an L322 and loved it and did many miles in it touring Scotland. Went back to a Defender and now that's paid off when I needed a 4wd to transport my parents around it was a simple choice to buy another L322 this one a 3.6 tdv8( that Harry's garage rekons is the sweet spot in L322s) and again I am loving the comfort on and off road and its winter performance. I totally agree with you when you say new Land Rovers are often maligned by traditional owners but always gain respect eventually it's something I have often stated.

I own two L322’s an original 2001 which I bought new and 21 years later still own and drive daily. It has travelled from Arctic Circle to Africa and never yet let me down,the other is a 2010 fully loaded model with all the pretty bits on it so the wife likes that. Both are excellent cars,my original car has been featured several times in various Land Rover mags and adverts.
Sam! I have an 08 L322 with the 4.4 NA engine. I live in Arizona. As far as I know, no L322 were sold in the US with a diesel. I think the only years we’re 2016-2019. When LR decided to turn the L322 back to Jaguar powered and Jaguar/Ford electronics, it took 2006-2007 to complete that, so the 2008 is the first year of being fully Intergrated into Jaguar and Ford. 2008 is also the first year they moved the ignition switch from the console to the dashboard and they had the five position terrain selector. 2008 is a great year. The series following the L322 has a glass roof, which I do not like. I like the L322 sun roof. Also the series following the L322 has a much sharper angle on the bottom of the rear fenders, maybe give more clearance off roading. One thing they can improve on is having larger sun visors. I am glad I have a L322.
I love mine, too! Had an '08 3.6TDV8 before and I can say the 4.4 is definitely the better of the two. It can cruise at 100mph all day here on the German Autobahn :)
Awesome review and 90% spot on. Only thing I would say your out on is the MPG. If your basing it on the trip the reality is very different. The standard dash mpg I found is out by about 4-6mpg. However an average of 29mpg over 10k for me so can’t grumble for such a comfy armchair
Agree. In the trip software it’s programmed to display 7% over it’s calculated mpg for starters. Low 30’s mpg is achievable at a 70mph motorway cruise if you work it out the proper way by back to back fill to the brim vs odometer miles. An amazing achievement for 4.4 V8. Glad I spent the premium for the 4.4 over the 3.6 in so many ways. Such a shame I’ll not be able to run mine for too long as the ULEZ, tax and insurance are pretty crippling for a central london owner even if the rest of the running costs are ‘ reasonable’
Had my Range Rover l322 4.4 v8 petrol for around 3 months now. I have owned so many cars over the last 20 years but this car although not perfect is just the best car i have owned. I use mine for work and family and it works perfectly for both. Parts are easy to find and are relatively cheap. Look after it and it will look after you. Workhorse
Hi from Australia, had a L322 hse for three years. Second owner, first owner had it from new for sixteen years full documentation. Only replaced tailgate lock and air suspension compressor, the rest was regular servicing and one set of Pirelli Scorpions. Did a 5500 kilometre trip to central Australia, fantastic long range driving ability and comfort. Where the L405 went wrong is it became a much bigger vehicle (200 mm wider) and lost the handiness of the L322. Also increased electronic complexity. The bmw TD6 engine was a pretty good unit with good drivability and not too demanding in maintenance. The appearance of early L322s with the grey grille and dark vents behind the front wheels gave a better look. Another miss on the L405 when they were no longer actual vents. Would go back to owning one if the opportunity presented itself. The current owner is enjoying it and still being maintained by the same specialist for close to twenty years. Can’t say a bad word about the L322. Cheers.
Great video, totally agree with everything you said. I had a l322 3litre for 4 hrs and loved it. Have now had a 4.4 for 2 years, a totally different animal, can’t praise it enough, an absolute joy to drive.😂
A few months ago I bought a 05 l322 vouge for £1500 in not bad condition I fixed the air suspension and other things that previous owners had failed to fix it didn't have a tow bar, but last week a mate of mine gave me a tow bar and lots of bits from one he was scrapping. I even got the sat nav and Bluetooth working I love it now.
We love our 2010 5.0 SC and it is the best driving Land Rover I've driven. I've had P38, LR3, LR4, old D90, old D110 and new 110. It has its niggles and doing timing chain tensioners is a royal pain, but overall, it is a fantastic truck. With good tires, it is is capable offroad and a beast in the snow.
Agree with most points, but not driven a 4.4 so can't comment on that. My 3.6 is at 310bhp and 700nm torque, so fairly similar, just lacking the 8speed box. I've had some right pillocks commenting on my videos, because I call it a Range Rover and have compared it to other Land Rovers. As if we don't know who makes Range Rovers.

Great video; I totally share your thoughts on the L322. I actually own a 2002 3.0 TD6 (the year that the L322 first appeared.) I keep it in Latvia and every year I drive 1200 miles to Austria (where it spends the winter) and the same back again. I bought it in 2011 with 143k on the clock and have added 45k since then so it’s just under 200k now. In that time I’ve changed the gearbox, turbo, injector, front air suspension (both sides,) handbrake assembly, discs all round, wiper motor, fuel pump and various other bits. A lot of that work was concentrated in the early years of my ownership, i.e. paying for the previous owners’ neglect, so for the last few years the repairs and replacement of parts has tailed off considerably (my friends tell me it’s no longer really a 2002 car!) Right now it runs beautifully, the BMW TD6 runs as sweetly as ever and yes, it is a perfectly adequate unit for this car if you’re not an aggressive driver looking to overtake everything in your path. I measured the mpg on one of those 1200 mile trips and it came out as an average of almost exactly 30mpg overall. I totally agree with your conclusion, and the other similar comments, that this car will reward its owner for regular thorough servicing and preventative maintenance. I have an additional tip which may not have been converted by others… every year without fail, I have it thoroughly and professionally rust proofed with the KROWN anti rust treatment (they inject the oily waxy substance into every nook and cranny, even the cavity inside the doors and it continues seeping deeper after treatment, neutralising any existing rust and preventing new rust. Also, every Spring after its spell in Austria, I take it to the same place to have it thoroughly cleaned underneath to remove any salt deposits. It really does pay dividends, the mechanics at the dealership in Riga, and even at the MOT testing station, often comment that it is in remarkable condition for its year. I absolutely love this car, every winter I swap the “all season” tyres for proper winter tyres and it takes snowy icy steep mountain roads effortlessly, I still carry chains but never need them. There’s a clip of mine on my channel, ready for one of our treks across snowy Europe.
I do agree with you Sam. I came to my L322 after a TD5 110 (which for my money was the best Defender!) and for largely the reasons you give in your video. Top work, keep the videos coming!
4.4 tdv8 and the 8speed ZF is the one to go for, 100%. Might be more expensive as it's the latest years 2011-2012 only, but well worth the extra penny, if you want to have a modern car. Anything older than 2010 is probably too much compromise.
Saw the title of the video and had to watch it! You are SPOT ON! The L332 is the best Range Rover. After this Land Rover went too luxurious for me. Can you imagine taking an L405 or L460 off road? They look much more at home cruising in a city or parked at a golf club. I also do not think they will age as well as the L332. Every point you have made has validity. im on my 10th land rover now , ive had 3 freelanders, a disco 1, 3 x disco 2, disco 3,a 4.6 p38 and now late 06 L322 4.4 v8 petrol and agree with all you've said
not for Discovery 3 owners. If u r looking for running horse along with Camping and touring. LR 3 is best. However RR L322 may be a option only if the seats are fully foldable as D3. Great video mate.

True! My lr322 is kind of "Peak Range Rover". Shure, it has some draw backs - the airsuspension, or the need of fix bit of rust at the upper tailgate, or the heating of the steering wheel has stopped working.... but even than, it's the best car i've ever owned. Even with over 230k km on the clock. Just this winter, with snow and ice on the roads, i've rescued a lorry, whitch came of the road and landed in a ditch. with absolut no issue at all. LowRange on, bit of gas - and problem solved.
I’ve got 2 RR’s A 4.4TDV8 SE ( Remapped, with the unmentionable mapped out) and a 405. IF….. JLR had made the 322, a fully aluminium vehicle…. Then why would they ever have needed to change it?? It would have been absolute perfection. The BEST, and NICEST Rangie ever made!
I love my l405 sdv8 autobiography great car. I maintain my vehicles myself and I can say that I have had no problems with this vehicle, and I have traveled 50,000 kilometers with it. It currently has 120,000 km on the clock.

I have a td6 on 04 I get about 450 miles to a tank for the size and luxury I think its amazing took it green lining today road tyres was awesome it looks good in town or country all the best donny
Thanks, great video. Simple and relevant narrative, enjoyed it. I have an L320 Sport and love that. Though I have little envy for the V8 variants, the 8speed gearbox is the same as what I had in my 2011 Jaguar XF 12 years ago and I loved that.
I have a 2003 range Rover HSE and I love it I wouldn't change it for nothing the dealership wants to me to trade it in for a new one but I know the new ones are trash
Land Rover never offered diesel engines in the states but I still don't care for diesel engines not reliable. Love my Discovery 3 SE 4.4 V8 awesome engine especially with a K&N drop in air filter and a Super Sprint catback exhaust it really brought the V8 to life.
200k miles on mine on the original unopened engine & turbos says otherwise! The V8 petrols are nice but really don't make a whole lot of sense in the UK or Europe because of fuel costs.

@@SamsMotors Yes I agree Sam, still hard to beat as this has all the bells and whistles that many others are only starting to come out with now. Apart from an EGR problem that I had sorted, combined with regular servicing has cost me very little to own, getting towards 130km now. The main problem I see is they are a little hard on batteries. If you keep a healthy battery in it you avoid many of the gremlins and such. Cheers Glenn.
Bought a P38 4.0 new. Great car. Consequently bought a L322 4.4 vogue petrol new. Shite. Regretted it for most of its life, should have kept the P38. L322 was over-complicated, under-reliable. Yes, more "refined" and maybe more capable, super motorway & tow car, but the reputation for unreliability is well deserved - maybe later versions had more improvements, but the gearbox oil feeds, the air suspension bags and pumps, the brakes - never-ending nightmare. Maybe I got a friday afternoon special!
The L322 certainly improved as time went on, as the P38 definitely did too. Both had a somewhat dreadful reputation for build quality early on in their lives but by the end had been mostly ironed out. Take mine for example - over 200k miles and I wouldn't hesitate to take it to the other end of the country tomorrow.
Yep, love mine! The 4.4TDV8 is the one to go for. Although it will become even more expensive to drive as the CAZs keep popping up around the country sadly
Great video but you missed the naturally aspirated Jaguar derived 4.4 V8 petrol engine that came between the BMW 4.4 and the Jaguar 4.2 SC for a short period. They are quite rare!
Sold my l322 due to rust, as a mechanic/welder I was shocked how bad the quality of metal and plastics was used on them. My choise, p38, the only LR that DOES NOT RUST.
The classic is still the best looking, but as an overall package the l322 is the best, i'm actually putting a 3.6tdv8 from a l322 in my range rover classic best of both worlds! living near Galway also might see you around. i bet the 1850kg classic with the 3.6 would easily beat your 4.4 in a race lol
Respectfully disagree. The others are good designs in their own right. The Classic was of course an iconic design - but the P38 and L322 designs are both aging well and will definitely become future classics.
Hey Sam, glad the move went well!! Hope you settle in Ireland. We just moved as well and found long items fitted better in our skoda superb over the RR, but for total space RR wins. Great video, right behind you. Loving mine, and the power a bit too much!! Did you get ur AC compressor sorted in the end? Got mine last November, no more steamed up windows. Got it booked in for coolant flush, thermostat and water pump and power steering fluid change in March as preventative maintenance. Flew threw MOT in December with no advisories. Tempted to do the trip to Russia this summer after Wales and Cornwall in the spring. See how she runs on a long trip👍 love the light bar mod, quite tempted. 😊👍
Totally agree have a earlier l320 not easy on wallet, but you only live once. Wish I had bought this one years ago had defenders, freelancers what a waste of time, some more expense than range rover I now have seen the light Trevor
Yep, with you! All those who hate on Land Rover have either never owned one (most common) or they owned a poorly maintained one. I have a ‘11 Supercharged and smile everytime I walk up to it! Daily driver and 125k miles. Love the content thanks for posting!
I love my L322 4.2 SC. I bought it (very) used from a 'specialty' dealer with a list of issues they didn't fix. With the help of the LR community, some intelligence, and decent mechanical skills I fixed them all and for very little money. It is a handsome car, rides beautifully, passes anything I need to pass safely and quickly and always gets me home. It is definitely the the best 4x4 by far, and to my eyes, the best looking.

I love my L322 4.2 SC as well. Only issue I cannot get solved is a leaking current. Every 2 days standing still it wont start. How to find the leak? Btw, no battery control light is burning so I guess it is not the alternator? Any help welcome
What community did you look to? Looking at a 2011 RR supercharged 117k miles. And want to maintenance myself but haven’t found the hardcover book or reliable site.

Best time ever in my L322 was a deeply flooded road with an abandoned Mercedes and Maserati in the middle of it. Water half way up their doors. Raised my suspension and powered through, creating a lovely tsunami all over them.

I have a 2008 Supercharged bought new with about 140k miles now.
My experience has a similar ring. Best moments are getting up early for deep powder skiing - when the Cayenne's, GLC's, X5's (pick your foo-foo SUV) can't get out of the parking lot because of deep snow. Raise the suspension, put it in snow & ice mode and crawl out to catch first tracks. 😎😎
I love my 19 year old L322. Reliable as anything else on the road and has never let me down yet. Only problem ive had was the air suspension pump playing up, wouldn't come out of normal ride height, plugged in a code reader, cleared the code and it was back to normal. Excellent all round vehicle. Its even been off-roading.
Having owned P38's and L322's over the years as my wife has a Freelander 2. I have suffered a more "sensible" car for the last 2 years as I thought we couldn't justify 2 4 x 4's. Suffering withdrawal symptoms I suggested we looked at a 2011 L322 TDV8 Vogue SE. What an absolute dream car! It has done 100,000 miles has automatic side steps cream leather interior and is in Galway Green metallic.I was hooked once again.I should have remembered that feeling as you climb into the drivers seat. Remembering, and ignoring just a few issues with my other Range Rovers , the worse being battery drain issues on 3 of them I have now had it for a month and still am as excited as the day I got it. Having enjoyed all your videos I have had the gearbox flush done and intend keeping this as my forever car. There's just no car that puts a smile on your face every time you drive it.

Make sure to service the gearbox very EARLY (fluid and filter), say yearly or at least every 50K miles. It costs only about 300 quid, for this will save you the 3000K quid you'll pay to fix a broken gearbox. To keep the L322 within reasonable costs, service it, service it, service it. Do the regular services BEFORE they are due. It will save you money and trouble in the long run. Clean and maintain the interior and exterior plastics with a good product like 303 Protector. Clean and maintain the leather seats and surfaces with a good leather cleaner and conditioner. It will preserve it, maintain your pleasure in driving it and, again, preserve its resale to boot. All cars will need repairs eventually. Cars that have a good reputation are often car models that their owners love and therefore they maintain them properly. This is no different. Set aside a budget for repairs. They will happen and you'll pat yourself on the back for having done it. See the previous comment.

I absolutely love my L322 2010 3.6 V8. Has the same facelift as yours. I have had a few 4x4 vehicles including a brand new X5 but my L322 is the only one that still makes me smile every time I get in it and drive. I also agree it's a beautiful looking vehicle. Looking forward to the next vid.
I have two L322s both 2007 versions. I first bought my wife a 2007 L322 Rover with the 4.4L gas engine. I loved the ride and the look. Then bought my son his first 2007 L322 4.2L SC. Again, even more powerful with the 400 HP Supercharged engine. And finally bought myself a 2007 L322 4.2L SC. This is the best used full size SUV for a wonderful daily driving experience. I do all my own work which makes this very affordable. That said, its been a wonderfully reliable car and I will keep these til the end. Wonderful on the highway, in the dirt, and on the beach, its the best 4 wheel drive vehicle without any modifications. So, I totally agree with your video, it is truly a wonderful vehicle.
I’ve owed my L322 for 20 years , bought new and now has 216 k on the clock , I have renewed the original gear box at 86k and it’s still going strong . I change the gear box oil every year and possibly that’s the secret . I also drive it to Spain every year for the summer and never an issue . My wife has a Range Rover sport but we go everywhere in mine as I can leave it anywhere and not worry . I can honestly say I will never sell it , I am so attached to it. Maintenance isn’t really an issue I service it every 6 months , 1 small service and then a full service. The new Range Rovers don’t excite me at all . I also own an Aston Martin so I have the best of both worlds . If I could only ever own 1 car then I would choose my L322 all day long

Well said. I love my 2012 Autobiography with a passion. White/basketball. Everything about it is right, from the front fascia to the bumper, to the fender, to the side panels and all through out. The rear upgraded bumper especially is just something to behold along with the Chrome exhaust tips and the trim molding is just art. It is so proportionate, the hatch window is nice and wide unlike the next Gen where everything Is trimmed down and tucked in weird. I live with both models 2012, 2015 and you can start noticing how paper thin it feels, that weighted feel and the Bulkiness is gone and out the window. I love the L322 and dont forget the Mirrors, square not oval, and last but not least headlight and taillights. I did forget the beautiful seats, center console, dash vents, and the elegant Steering wheel with a proper Land Rover Badge in the middle, not Range Rover with a fake metal backing. I must add the non Delayed throttle response and the way it Wofts around is just natural as it should be. Everything changed as far as tuning goes when they shaved it down 900 pounds in 2013, it was just not the same. Bring back the old style gear shifter please and real buttons. Long Live the L322.

honestly change it once a year and your gearbox will double its lifespan, 86k i didn’t change the oil as I didn’t know you had to , second gear box done 168k miles before it gave way with yearly oil changes
I had a TD6 for 5yrs & loved it. Sadly thanks to illness I managed to destroy it but it protected me. Apart from bruised ribs from the seat belt I was unharmed. I long for another L322 but I'm not sure if it will ever happen. 👍
Hi Sam, another great informative and well spoken video from you. Since I was a wee boy and before I could drive (I'm 57 now BTW) I've always loved ranges. I remember the first time I saw a mark 1 and new one day I would have to own one. Fast forward to last year when my dreams finally came true and I finally bought my 2011 4.4 tdv8 in Santorini Black with cream leather and piano black dash. I was in love right away and literally driving on cloud nine. Best and most luxurious car I have ever owned. Then after only three months of having her some Barsteward for want of a ruder word stole my dream car never to be seen again. This put me off getting another one as I read they are one of the most stolen cars in the UK. I tried an Audi Q7, hated it, a Merc ml350, a VW Tourag, all very vanilla. After watching your videos I realised I'm wasting my time and will have to get another Range but this time I'll definitely be installing a better anti theft device. Just have to talk nice to her indoors and put the petted lip on. All the best pal.

I was having this conversation yesterday! We came to the conclusion the ultimate 3 land rovers were Freelander 2, Disco 4 and the mighty L322. Just seems like the best era of land rover.
The 322 has always had a string group of utilitarian users, from farmers to towing where as the 405 never seemed to get that - not sure why - perhaps the 322 was just the perfect design, good looking but chunky where as the 405 was a bit soft looking?
I'm loving mine and can forgive the maintenance on the old beast because of all the points you mentioned. I'm hoping the turbos don't needs doing but even then there are plenty of how to guides and it's a well known and documented problem.
Planning in buying a set of Grabber at3 for it soon :)

Morning Sam. Great video and all your comments are spot on. We’re on our ninth Range Rover, my wife has a 4.4 L405 and I have a 4.2 supercharged L322. My wife’s roughly does double my mpg, but I prefer mine. I think it still has the better driving position, and feels like a proper Range Rover😉
100% agree with all comments I have had a 2 door I have had a 4 door classic and now I have an L322 with the straihgt 6 I can hand on heart say they have not cost me any more than

I totally agree with you. I've got a 2012 tdv8, with a mileage now of around 260k km. And it is by far the best car I've ever had. It's not 100% problem free, but nearly. My cars before this was a BMW X6 and a 740iL as well as a Porsche Cayenne GTS. Only the Cayenne could match my L322 in reliability. My BMW's spent far more time at the garage for repairs.

Bonnet bare metal respray. Upper and lower tailgates sprayed. Black badges inside and out front and back. Black gloss range rover lettering front and back. Ebc anti corrosion discs. New ebc pads. Watched the video & can’t disagree, superb motor. But Sam & reading through the comments thus far, nobody has mentioned the one to look for is the AJV8 4.4. This was the ROW engine (rest of the world) engine for years & was sold by the bucket loaf overseas. Difficult to find in the UK but worth rooting out. Introduced after the BMW V8 & sold in the UK from late ‘05 to early ‘07 plate you get 300bhp, 6 ZF gearbox & 23mpg on a run. I did it for 18mths. No turbos, no egrs etc etc. Oh & if it’s registered pre 23/6/06 - cheaper road tax. Winner 👍

I've had a classic range rover which was my first Range Rover and I loved it, I am Defender guy at heart but have had a P38 (used the engine and gearbox in a Defender) so didn't drive the P38 far. A few years ago I had an L322 and loved it and did many miles in it touring Scotland. Went back to a Defender and now that's paid off when I needed a 4wd to transport my parents around it was a simple choice to buy another L322 this one a 3.6 tdv8( that Harry's garage rekons is the sweet spot in L322s) and again I am loving the comfort on and off road and its winter performance. I totally agree with you when you say new Land Rovers are often maligned by traditional owners but always gain respect eventually it's something I have often stated.

I own two L322’s an original 2001 which I bought new and 21 years later still own and drive daily. It has travelled from Arctic Circle to Africa and never yet let me down,the other is a 2010 fully loaded model with all the pretty bits on it so the wife likes that. Both are excellent cars,my original car has been featured several times in various Land Rover mags and adverts.

Sam! I have an 08 L322 with the 4.4 NA engine. I live in Arizona. As far as I know, no L322 were sold in the US with a diesel. I think the only years we’re 2016-2019.
When LR decided to turn the L322 back to Jaguar powered and Jaguar/Ford electronics, it took 2006-2007 to complete that, so the 2008 is the first year of being fully Intergrated into Jaguar and Ford. 2008 is also the first year they moved the ignition switch from the console to the dashboard and they had the five position terrain selector. 2008 is a great year.
The series following the L322 has a glass roof, which I do not like. I like the L322 sun roof. Also the series following the L322 has a much sharper angle on the bottom of the rear fenders, maybe give more clearance off roading.
One thing they can improve on is having larger sun visors. I am glad I have a L322.
Completely agree with you, I'm on my 4th V8 diesel (4.4). I have avoided the newer 405 as it just isn't as chunky as the L322

I love mine, too! Had an '08 3.6TDV8 before and I can say the 4.4 is definitely the better of the two. It can cruise at 100mph all day here on the German Autobahn :)
56 year old here. I have 2 x TDV8 3.6, and they are fantastic cars.
Mine hit 365k ( km) still going strong. God willing. 2009 had a very small import qty I believe a few thousand. which makes the 09 a rare bird indeed.

Awesome review and 90% spot on. Only thing I would say your out on is the MPG. If your basing it on the trip the reality is very different. The standard dash mpg I found is out by about 4-6mpg. However an average of 29mpg over 10k for me so can’t grumble for such a comfy armchair
Agree. In the trip software it’s programmed to display 7% over it’s calculated mpg for starters. Low 30’s mpg is achievable at a 70mph motorway cruise if you work it out the proper way by back to back fill to the brim vs odometer miles. An amazing achievement for 4.4 V8. Glad I spent the premium for the 4.4 over the 3.6 in so many ways. Such a shame I’ll not be able to run mine for too long as the ULEZ, tax and insurance are pretty crippling for a central london owner even if the rest of the running costs are ‘ reasonable’
Had my Range Rover l322 4.4 v8 petrol for around 3 months now. I have owned so many cars over the last 20 years but this car although not perfect is just the best car i have owned. I use mine for work and family and it works perfectly for both. Parts are easy to find and are relatively cheap. Look after it and it will look after you. Workhorse
Hi from Australia, had a L322 hse for three years. Second owner, first owner had it from new for sixteen years full documentation. Only replaced tailgate lock and air suspension compressor, the rest was regular servicing and one set of Pirelli Scorpions. Did a 5500 kilometre trip to central Australia, fantastic long range driving ability and comfort. Where the L405 went wrong is it became a much bigger vehicle (200 mm wider) and lost the handiness of the L322. Also increased electronic complexity. The bmw TD6 engine was a pretty good unit with good drivability and not too demanding in maintenance. The appearance of early L322s with the grey grille and dark vents behind the front wheels gave a better look. Another miss on the L405 when they were no longer actual vents. Would go back to owning one if the opportunity presented itself. The current owner is enjoying it and still being maintained by the same specialist for close to twenty years. Can’t say a bad word about the L322. Cheers.
Great video, totally agree with everything you said. I had a l322 3litre for 4 hrs and loved it. Have now had a 4.4 for 2 years, a totally different animal, can’t praise it enough, an absolute joy to drive.😂

A few months ago I bought a 05 l322 vouge for £1500 in not bad condition I fixed the air suspension and other things that previous owners had failed to fix it didn't have a tow bar, but last week a mate of mine gave me a tow bar and lots of bits from one he was scrapping. I even got the sat nav and Bluetooth working I love it now.
So much car for the money. Enjoy it!
We love our 2010 5.0 SC and it is the best driving Land Rover I've driven. I've had P38, LR3, LR4, old D90, old D110 and new 110. It has its niggles and doing timing chain tensioners is a royal pain, but overall, it is a fantastic truck. With good tires, it is is capable offroad and a beast in the snow.

Agree with most points, but not driven a 4.4 so can't comment on that. My 3.6 is at 310bhp and 700nm torque, so fairly similar, just lacking the 8speed box. I've had some right pillocks commenting on my videos, because I call it a Range Rover and have compared it to other Land Rovers. As if we don't know who makes Range Rovers.

Great video; I totally share your thoughts on the L322. I actually own a 2002 3.0 TD6 (the year that the L322 first appeared.) I keep it in Latvia and every year I drive 1200 miles to Austria (where it spends the winter) and the same back again. I bought it in 2011 with 143k on the clock and have added 45k since then so it’s just under 200k now. In that time I’ve changed the gearbox, turbo, injector, front air suspension (both sides,) handbrake assembly, discs all round, wiper motor, fuel pump and various other bits. A lot of that work was concentrated in the early years of my ownership, i.e. paying for the previous owners’ neglect, so for the last few years the repairs and replacement of parts has tailed off considerably (my friends tell me it’s no longer really a 2002 car!) Right now it runs beautifully, the BMW TD6 runs as sweetly as ever and yes, it is a perfectly adequate unit for this car if you’re not an aggressive driver looking to overtake everything in your path. I measured the mpg on one of those 1200 mile trips and it came out as an average of almost exactly 30mpg overall. I totally agree with your conclusion, and the other similar comments, that this car will reward its owner for regular thorough servicing and preventative maintenance. I have an additional tip which may not have been converted by others… every year without fail, I have it thoroughly and professionally rust proofed with the KROWN anti rust treatment (they inject the oily waxy substance into every nook and cranny, even the cavity inside the doors and it continues seeping deeper after treatment, neutralising any existing rust and preventing new rust. Also, every Spring after its spell in Austria, I take it to the same place to have it thoroughly cleaned underneath to remove any salt deposits. It really does pay dividends, the mechanics at the dealership in Riga, and even at the MOT testing station, often comment that it is in remarkable condition for its year. I absolutely love this car, every winter I swap the “all season” tyres for proper winter tyres and it takes snowy icy steep mountain roads effortlessly, I still carry chains but never need them. There’s a clip of mine on my channel, ready for one of our treks across snowy Europe.

4.4 tdv8 and the 8speed ZF is the one to go for, 100%. Might be more expensive as it's the latest years 2011-2012 only, but well worth the extra penny, if you want to have a modern car. Anything older than 2010 is probably too much compromise.
Saw the title of the video and had to watch it! You are SPOT ON! The L332 is the best Range Rover. After this Land Rover went too luxurious for me. Can you imagine taking an L405 or L460 off road? They look much more at home cruising in a city or parked at a golf club. I also do not think they will age as well as the L332. Every point you have made has validity. im on my 10th land rover now , ive had 3 freelanders, a disco 1, 3 x disco 2, disco 3,a 4.6 p38 and now late 06 L322 4.4 v8 petrol and agree with all you've said
not for Discovery 3 owners. If u r looking for running horse along with Camping and touring. LR 3 is best. However RR L322 may be a option only if the seats are fully foldable as D3. Great video mate.

True! My lr322 is kind of "Peak Range Rover". Shure, it has some draw backs - the airsuspension, or the need of fix bit of rust at the upper tailgate, or the heating of the steering wheel has stopped working.... but even than, it's the best car i've ever owned. Even with over 230k km on the clock.
Just this winter, with snow and ice on the roads, i've rescued a lorry, whitch came of the road and landed in a ditch. with absolut no issue at all. LowRange on, bit of gas - and problem solved.

IF….. JLR had made the 322, a fully aluminium vehicle…. Then why would they ever have needed to change it?? It would have been absolute perfection.

I love my l405 sdv8 autobiography great car. I maintain my vehicles myself and I can say that I have had no problems with this vehicle, and I have traveled 50,000 kilometers with it. It currently has 120,000 km on the clock.
I have a 405 autobiography which I love with the V8 engine, my Son has the 322 with the BMW engine and agree with what you had Abu he 322. Great video and have enjoyed them all. Thanks and look forward to your new project continuing👍👍👍👍👍👍

Agree with all of these points - had a P38 then 2 L322s, and it was absolutely joyous to own. Never had a really major cost with any of them.

I have a td6 on 04 I get about 450 miles to a tank for the size and luxury I think its amazing took it green lining today road tyres was awesome it looks good in town or country all the best donny
Thanks, great video. Simple and relevant narrative, enjoyed it. I have an L320 Sport and love that. Though I have little envy for the V8 variants, the 8speed gearbox is the same as what I had in my 2011 Jaguar XF 12 years ago and I loved that.

I have a 2003 range Rover HSE and I love it I wouldn't change it for nothing the dealership wants to me to trade it in for a new one but I know the new ones are trash
Land Rover never offered diesel engines in the states but I still don't care for diesel engines not reliable. Love my Discovery 3 SE 4.4 V8 awesome engine especially with a K&N drop in air filter and a Super Sprint catback exhaust it really brought the V8 to life.
200k miles on mine on the original unopened engine & turbos says otherwise! The V8 petrols are nice but really don't make a whole lot of sense in the UK or Europe because of fuel costs.

Thanks Sam I agree totally with your reasoning, I love my 3.6 TDV8 L322 Autobiography purchased with 65k on the clock 6 years ago. I must admit they are a little more costly to buy here in AUS. Mine would have been 200k new here in 2010. Paid 65k. Aud. Still I love it.
Even at that higher price they're still pretty hard to beat!

@@SamsMotors Yes I agree Sam, still hard to beat as this has all the bells and whistles that many others are only starting to come out with now. Apart from an EGR problem that I had sorted, combined with regular servicing has cost me very little to own, getting towards 130km now. The main problem I see is they are a little hard on batteries. If you keep a healthy battery in it you avoid many of the gremlins and such.

Bought a P38 4.0 new. Great car. Consequently bought a L322 4.4 vogue petrol new. Shite. Regretted it for most of its life, should have kept the P38. L322 was over-complicated, under-reliable. Yes, more "refined" and maybe more capable, super motorway & tow car, but the reputation for unreliability is well deserved - maybe later versions had more improvements, but the gearbox oil feeds, the air suspension bags and pumps, the brakes - never-ending nightmare. Maybe I got a friday afternoon special!
The L322 certainly improved as time went on, as the P38 definitely did too. Both had a somewhat dreadful reputation for build quality early on in their lives but by the end had been mostly ironed out.
Take mine for example - over 200k miles and I wouldn't hesitate to take it to the other end of the country tomorrow.
Yep, love mine! The 4.4TDV8 is the one to go for. Although it will become even more expensive to drive as the CAZs keep popping up around the country sadly

Great video but you missed the naturally aspirated Jaguar derived 4.4 V8 petrol engine that came between the BMW 4.4 and the Jaguar 4.2 SC for a short period. They are quite rare!

Sold my l322 due to rust, as a mechanic/welder I was shocked how bad the quality of metal and plastics was used on them. My choise, p38, the only LR that DOES NOT RUST.
That's definitely a good reason haha, I really need to paint the sills and subframes on my L322 with something to protect it.
The classic is still the best looking, but as an overall package the l322 is the best, i'm actually putting a 3.6tdv8 from a l322 in my range rover classic best of both worlds! living near Galway also might see you around. i bet the 1850kg classic with the 3.6 would easily beat your 4.4 in a race lol

I think the range rover p38 vogue 2000-2002 version are the best range Rovers ever made
The Range Rover classic was the design icon and the later incarnation’s only look good where they borrow from the classic.
Respectfully disagree. The others are good designs in their own right. The Classic was of course an iconic design - but the P38 and L322 designs are both aging well and will definitely become future classics.

Hey Sam, glad the move went well!! Hope you settle in Ireland. We just moved as well and found long items fitted better in our skoda superb over the RR, but for total space RR wins. Great video, right behind you. Loving mine, and the power a bit too much!! Did you get ur AC compressor sorted in the end? Got mine last November, no more steamed up windows. Got it booked in for coolant flush, thermostat and water pump and power steering fluid change in March as preventative maintenance. Flew threw MOT in December with no advisories. Tempted to do the trip to Russia this summer after Wales and Cornwall in the spring. See how she runs on a long trip👍 love the light bar mod, quite tempted. 😊👍

Love my 2006 L322, my Classic 1987 comes close. I have little love for my ex-P38, a comfortable but problematic car.
Totally agree have a earlier l320 not easy on wallet, but you only live once. Wish I had bought this one years ago had defenders, freelancers what a waste of time, some more expense than range rover I now have seen the light
