You can use dumb bells to hit the rear head of your traps as well. Although the biceps are initiated, you are able to use more trap focus. I sit while doing them. So sit with DBs, angle your elbows back slightly and squeeze back, making your shoulder blades touch. I have never used the one in the video before, but will try it next time I work my traps. I also like to super set the top head and back head of the traps in the same wo.

i started doing this at the apartment gym because they only have 50 lb dumbbells and i need to get more weight on the shrugs now. Now i can get up to 200 pounds instead of 100 with the dumbbells. No barbells only smith machine and that does not work well.
Don't you feel like you're leaning though when you use too much weight on the cables?

The upper fibers of the traps.
mainly upper, but also a bit of the mid traps, since you're also pulling back and not just straight up like you would with free weights. The higher you set the cable height, the more you're going to shift the emphasis towards your lower traps. Straight up with free weights works upper traps, whereas the opposite motion (scapular pull up) which you can do on a pull up bar works the lower traps. The scapular pull up just involves hanging on a bar and shrugging without moving your arms
I do this same exercise except I straighten my shoulders leaning very little like he does in this video and shrug up whole holding your shoulders straight and back just a little and you will be sore the next day,you can really put some pounds on it too..

You supposed to shrug straight up and straight down. Twisting and rotation do nothing for shrugs. Do it with dumbbells and do it directly up and down while the weights are hanging by your sides.
