I love hearing the truth from a real master. Smoking' Joe is one of those guys that's earned his stripes. No BS, no prima donna attitude, just the real deal.
I've spent about 3 hours on RUclips tonight trying to understand stall and I was ready to give up and stick a 5 speed in. Then I watched this The best video for stall explanation on RUclips. Subscribed 🙌🏼
Smokin Joe is awesome. He really knows alot and is great we get learn alittle of what he knows. I learned so much about automatic transmissions with the video you did with him rebuilding your trans. I hope there's more videos with him in the future.
I bought a stock torque converter 4.3 V6 for my Chevy van $75 with core Exchange without cords $150 me my self I don't a high stall torque converter it's always good to put in additional external oil cooler on your vehicle helps keep the oil cooler because rubber seals dry out with heat so if you want your transmission to last longer put on an exterior additional transmission oil cooler on your vehicle the man this video is right I'm a retired transmission mechanic another session you have to get all correct information before you can put in the right High stall torque converter in a car otherwise she will tear up your transmission the man this video is very knowledgeable about torque converters a friend had a Buick with a 6 cylinder motor in it and he wanted a high-performance High stall torque converter it would not run right I told him to put the stock torque converter back in and the vehicle ran fine apparently put in too high of stall torque converter in his vehicle always go to an expert that knows about high performance when doing high performance modifications on your vehicle
Holy crap! You just read my mind or something? I've recentlybeen looking into choosing a lockup torque converter for a future project and then I see this in my sub box!
I would like to see examples of right and wrong converters on the same car. Unf.. it would take a decent amount of effort.. changing it out and having the parts.
Funny you said that 1st. Put a 3500 in my brothers 1st hot rod. He thought the car would stall to 3500 like it's on a brake and then take off. Had to explain the same thing. I told him a loose sloppy converter is like having a clutch that's starting to slip and go out. Or shoving the clutch pedal in just enough to start slipping. In a N/A sb 3400# car you would probably have to bolt it to the ground to get 3500 w/o a brake. Now back to T/C dump valve studies for my car.
What are your thoughts on the Circle-D converter as a go-to for general ripping around town with a 500hp v8? That's what sloppy always goes to when he turbos an LS.
Currently have a 2003 Chevy single cab 6.2 engine making about 580 hp stage 4 cam raise compression butterfly Pistons /RPM built transmission 28in tall tire 456 gears currently weighing about 4,000 My shop is saying to order of 5000 stall going to be mostly track little bit of Street truck what is your suggestion
7:00 As the owner of a Cummins diesel that has a Ram pickup wrapped around it, I wince everytime I hear someone say "Cummings". It's hard to believe now in 2021 that there are still people, people in the automotive business, think there is a "G" in Cummins.
got a question for u ..i got a 1990 k5 blazer 700r trans 2000 to 2400 torque converter in it and im thinking about buying this race motor it has 12.5 to 1 sbc 355 030 over with elgin e-1090p solid flat tappet cam with scorpion 1.6 rockers for total lift of 573 intake 594 exhust can i use the torque converter i have on this engine,,..i no i got alot of things to change because it is a tbi fuel injection
I have a 94 gmc c1500 with stock 350 engine , gear ratio is 425 , 4L60e transmission , 4” suspension lift and 35”x20” tires and rims , what converter do you recommend , I’m not trying to race but I’m trying to have a smooth ride when I tow or load the truck , please help ?
94 chevy impala ss comp cam dur .50 210 int 220 exh .. .500 .510 lift .. 3.73 rear .. 20 inch rims.... what stall do you recommend... I have a 2100 now..
I use to have bad ass engines built when I was a kid and never changed the factory converter or rear gears. What a disappointment.... Just finished a 383 stroker for a street car Nova put a Hughes 2500 and posi 3.42. Just right for a mild show/street car.
So an 1800 stall speed means the converter stops slipping at 1800rpm? So if i have a 454 idling at 500rpm, then giving gass and reving it to 1300rpm to accelerate, the converter will not lock up untill my engine reaches a speed where the cruise rpm is 1800?
Do you know anything about upgrading the torque converter in the new CVT transmissions. Seems like there is going to be a big market for rebuilding CVT transmissions.
I work on Nissan's and most of the time the torque converter will lock up as low as 18-20mph. So not much need for the converter to work, the CVT is making the range change. Also performance and CVT...with Nissan do not go very well together. From my experience.
To me and I don't understand this that well and it even though was explained well, doesn't make sense to have something higher than the motor turns. I can understand it won't be one to one without it slipping and causing hear. How many average cars turn that fast or far
Is that why I've noticed Monster torque converters made for Diesel have an extremely low stall, even for 700R4? As long as a low stall isn't going to hurt my acceleration with a twin turbo setup, I'm fine with using a Diesel rated torque converter to swap in my 700R4, 6 lug is designed to hold up better than the stock 3 lug anyway. Are there any good online calculators to pick the right stall speed converter that's perfect for the setup?
On a diesel u have to watch on how low of stall you go with it will effect turbo spool up. If you tow with it I would go 200-400rpm lower than stock. If ur not towing I would go with a stock stall. Look a goerend for a converter
fuck me now i had to know too. i think its those plastic tools they use to allign a clutch into a gearbox with the splines on them. "clutch allignment tool" or w/e
Ya they are clutch alignment tools for different engines. The clutch has splines (you can see the splines on those tools) and in the engine there is a piolet bearing that the tip of the tool goes into. You tighten up the pressure plate and remove the tool and the clutch is aligned
The rods hanging on the wall are Clutch Alignment Tools. They are used to center the clutch plate when you bolt on the pressure plate to the flywheel at the back of the engine. The center of the clutch plate is splined and the front nose of the tool is smaller and round to fit into the pilot bearing that sits in the center of the engine flywheel. These are used only when putting together clutches and manual transmissions.
Stock fluid couldn't handle it, even the converter and line pressures generated could blow something. Most dragsters use a full manual valve body and trans brake to keep driveline stress down, and still manage good launch times off the line. Hell, even the Demon uses an automatic.
I am a retired transmission mechanic one of the most important things is to keep the transmission fluid cooler if you're doing racing or even if you're driving on the street put a big external oil cooler on vehicle this will keep the transmission cooler and your transmission will last a lot longer it is a torque converter that generates most of the heat in your transmission Shady your transmission as recommended by the manufacturer is best for passenger cars also doubt a sub shops are doing the flush system I don't recommend that especially when you have an old vehicle and the transmission has not been changed for a very long time for example we have a vehicle with a hundred fifty thousand miles or more and a person goes down to the mechanic shop and they want to watch the transmission this is not a good idea because the transmission is old the clutches are old trust me on this don't have the garage do a total flush on an old car I recommend change the oil as recommended by the dealership and a filter on your vehicle but do not do a chemical flush on your vehicle you can I do your coolant lines from your radiator and there is an intake line a output line you put new transmission oil in this way would you do a regular scheduled transmission fluid change are your vehicle with a filter if a vehicle has a lot of mileage on it it doesn't look like it's been changed very dirty or burnt fluid drain the oil pan put a new filter on it and fill it back up with fluid maintenance is the key to keeping your vehicle running for many years have a nice day sir
Mad respect to Mr. Joe. Smoking down hard on his cigar with a band aid on his hand and a naked lady on the wall. Godspeed sir.
nice poster in background
*two naked ladies 😉
Old School , I bet he has stories.
I love hearing the truth from a real master. Smoking' Joe is one of those guys that's earned his stripes. No BS, no prima donna attitude, just the real deal.
Homie smoking a cigar while explaining so ima listen
Exactly
Cool interview, I would enjoy more go-fast interviews like this on the channel.
I can’t help but stare just over joes left shoulder while he’s talking. Like my eyes are just drawn there for some reason.
there's some good "rear end ratio" over there :))

I've spent about 3 hours on RUclips tonight trying to understand stall and I was ready to give up and stick a 5 speed in. Then I watched this
The best video for stall explanation on RUclips. Subscribed 🙌🏼
It’s a real shop, look at the pictures in the background
If he could explain the Dodge 48re I'd watch it. This dude is the man! Love both his videos
What is your 48RE in?
Hearing him speak reminds me of the NY/NJ/Chicago guys I’ve know over the last 30 yrs
Smokin Joe is awesome. He really knows alot and is great we get learn alittle of what he knows. I learned so much about automatic transmissions with the video you did with him rebuilding your trans. I hope there's more videos with him in the future.
Joe sounds like he knows what he’s doing. My kind of guy!
Joe is the man for build and performance. If you don’t know... ask Joe!
I love watching this guy....what a character.
“580cubicin on alcohol” think buddy’s on alcohol to.... I like it
Well explained. Yes the heat buildup can ne quite intense if someone is cruising around at 40mph with a 4500rpm stall.
You can tell he’s passionate about what he does, he was palming that converter like a nice ..... Calendar in the background 😉

could watch smokin Joe all day !!!! very interesting guy
i just put a 5000 stall in my stock 302 its awesome !
Joe knows alot about smoke'n!
im so glad that i build the transmission before i work on the engine.
Holy crap! You just read my mind or something? I've recentlybeen looking into choosing a lockup torque converter for a future project and then I see this in my sub box!
Joe is a great guy I hope we see more of him
This guy is friggin awesome. Would be a cool guy to work for. Thanks Joe!
I love the way this guy talks...👍👍👍
I would like to see examples of right and wrong converters on the same car. Unf.. it would take a decent amount of effort.. changing it out and having the parts.
Watch cleatus McFarland's videos racing the red corvette Ruby lately.
This guy is a genius.
Great Video Brother, as good information I have ever seen explained, thanks for the help.
Wow all this greatness in the niagara region 👍
Good feedback about the torque converter!

Buckeye Presision in Coshocton does amazing converters.
The guy is a really Master...😮
thats one sweet ass poster in the back ground!! this is my kinda garage!!
Love your shop Joe! Thats a mighty fine poster of a$$ on your back wall! : )
Dudes a legend
my auto trans professor was just like him... i guess that real pro's and people that know what they do look and sound alike even around the world....
This guy is good.
Learn something new everyday! Thanks bro! KEEP ON KEEPING ON!!!
Great vid …please help wake up my aod Foxbody ,car is stock 5.0 except 373 gears what size of converter will wake this car up thanks 🙏
Your awesome for that explanation !!!! Thank you !!!!! I thought the same thing !!! 😂
Currently have a 2003 Chevy single cab

My shop is saying to order of 5000 stall going to be mostly track little bit of Street truck what is your suggestion
Hey can you set up a torque converter for NOS , what is the difference just curious , just a higher lock up
Hell yeah! Just like the bottom end. Street drive it better have a cooler.
What converter did your friend with Chevelle with 700r4 use.Thats the exact thing i am running
So where do you have these custom built at? Are you a Vigilante fan?
I've heard people say chose a converter 700 rpm below your peak torque. Is that a good general reference?
7:00 As the owner of a Cummins diesel that has a Ram pickup wrapped around it, I wince everytime I hear someone say "Cummings". It's hard to believe now in 2021 that there are still people, people in the automotive business, think there is a "G" in Cummins.
Thank you for this video. It was very informative. You have a new subscriber.
A guy with a Wurth Swimsuit calendar hanging in his shop has got to be OK. 😎
Can a torque converter give better acceleration than a conventional clutch transmission?
More Smokin' Joe!!!
So I have a th400 reverse pattern manual, do I need a lockup or no
Well my truck stall converter sucks it won’t lockup till after I get gapped from stop light to stop light. 750 HP diesel
got a question for u ..i got a 1990 k5 blazer 700r trans 2000 to 2400 torque converter in it and im thinking about buying this race motor it has 12.5 to 1 sbc 355 030 over with elgin e-1090p solid flat tappet cam with scorpion 1.6 rockers for total lift of 573 intake 594 exhust can i use the torque converter i have on this engine,,..i no i got alot of things to change because it is a tbi fuel injection
So what stall would I need for a 350 chevy ,525 solid lift cam turbo 400 488 gears (demolition derby) heads are i52 world products 🤔
I have a 94 gmc c1500 with stock 350 engine , gear ratio is 425 , 4L60e transmission , 4” suspension lift and 35”x20” tires and rims , what converter do you recommend , I’m not trying to race but I’m trying to have a smooth ride when I tow or load the truck , please help ?
this man can really "dumb" it down for us simple folk
Excellent description ..............
Smokin Joe 👍🏻 Truth
94 chevy impala ss comp cam dur .50 210 int 220 exh .. .500 .510 lift .. 3.73 rear .. 20 inch rims.... what stall do you recommend... I have a 2100 now..
Have a compound turbo duramax with 373 rear 33in tires prob 750hp 5sp fully built allison. If I tow and play whats a good stall speed
Good info guys!!
I use to have bad ass engines built when I was a kid and never changed the factory converter or rear gears. What a disappointment.... Just finished a 383 stroker for a street car Nova put a Hughes 2500 and posi 3.42. Just right for a mild show/street car.
Does Smokin Joe have a channel & website ?
Can I pull hole shots with my 140hp V6 using a loser convertor? I don't want to change rear gear b/c I drive 75MPH and don't need higher RPM.
Wow... Nice video!!
Good video deboss
A man of knowledge great thanks
So an 1800 stall speed means the converter stops slipping at 1800rpm? So if i have a 454 idling at 500rpm, then giving gass and reving it to 1300rpm to accelerate, the converter will not lock up untill my engine reaches a speed where the cruise rpm is 1800?
And do you sell converters ?
Do you know anything about upgrading the torque converter in the new CVT transmissions. Seems like there is going to be a big market for rebuilding CVT transmissions.
I work on Nissan's and most of the time the torque converter will lock up as low as 18-20mph. So not much need for the converter to work, the CVT is making the range change. Also performance and CVT...with Nissan do not go very well together. From my experience.
Great video
Thank u for your time very beneficial .
love your work ...keep up the gooood work :)

Very informative. Much appreciated!
So where do i send mine?
Came for the info, stayed for the poster
Is there any way to convert the a518 behind my cummins with non locking converter to a locking one without doing the full 47rh swap?
Love the videos!
A very clever man.
Da Bears!
What chart is he using to figure the converter size.
I love this guy :) :p
Great explanation. I totally agree.
I wish this man was my dad :(
Is that why I've noticed Monster torque converters made for Diesel have an extremely low stall, even for 700R4? Are there any good online calculators to pick the right stall speed converter that's perfect for the setup?
Who's running a 700r4 behind a diesel? Do not run a low stall diesel converter on a gas motor you will be disappointed.
On a diesel u have to watch on how low of stall you go with it will effect turbo spool up. If you tow with it I would go 200-400rpm lower than stock. If ur not towing I would go with a stock stall. Look a goerend for a converter
I like to think of them like a variator in a moped.
Slips and engine revs increasing until it throws out (variation point)
So will too low of a stall hurt top end power/speed?
No, it's just you want to get to your top end faster and by doing so you have a higher stall
I learned something
Haha ! Great video and good explain 😉
What are those lil gray things hanging on the wall? To the right of the phone
fuck me now i had to know too.

Yep. Didn't have one while putting my Subaru engine back in and had a hell of a time getting it all lined up. Definitely handy.
Fuckin love this guy!!
Great video. Still like the good ol manual trans
You definitely look like Tim Allen😁
I'd love to know how long fluid lasts with all these drag racers spooling their turbos against the converter for what seems like an eternity.
Stock fluid couldn't handle it, even the converter and line pressures generated could blow something. Most dragsters use a full manual valve body and trans brake to keep driveline stress down, and still manage good launch times off the line. Hell, even the Demon uses an automatic.

Electronic lockup... or better yet a stick..
does anyone else think he sounds like uncle buck?
