I had someone offer $1 on a book that was listed at $10 with free shipping. I countered with $7. They countered with $1.25. I declined and blocked them. You are right, hard lowballers will be nothing but trouble either with returns and/or bad feedback.
I go in with the thought that everybody wants to think that they are getting a steal of a deal. I price my stuff 20-40 percent higher than my “lowest price” just so I can haggle with these people. Sometimes I get the full ask! I heard somewhere that offering lower than 20 percent off is considered rude. I concur!!!
Coincidentally, I had a bit of a breaking point with lowballers two days ago. It's a constant hassle, but this one caught me at the right/wrong time and I sorta let her have it. She hit me with $5 on a $25 item... I find this kind of insulting. I responded with a 19.95 counter and said - "5? Is that a joke? 5? I'm gong to choose to believe that was a joke. Haha, very funny!"...... and she accepted my counter... dunno what happened but I'm totally expecting a negative feedback LOL
You are simply my favorite on RUclips. Your dry, witty and intellectual jokes are my absolute favorite. Your exaggerated circumstance stories are THE BEST! Thank you!
Yeah I've discovered that when someone puts an offer on your item on ebay the algorithm makes your item more visible to others. Many times I've gotten lowball offers and then sold the item in the next day or two for full asking price, so low ballers do have value in that they can get your item seen by more people ;)
You're right. Best thing you can do is to let them wait and make them nervous. Other thing i sometimes do is saying "sorry I'm already thinking about a better offer than yours".
For the alg my friend. Feel better and lowballers are the reason I make more money because I price my items higher that way when people think they are lowballing they are actually a lot closer to where I want to be.
I do the same, but not by much. Low priced items I price up $5, mid range up $10, and expensive items I mark up $20. Even then I'm not much above the rest, and my items are higher quality than the lowest prices.
I'm using a new pair of headphones today for the first time and you're the first video I clicked on. I thought, DAY-YUM, I have been missing out all this time! And then you explained about your voice. 🤣

I was wondering if you ever would share your eBay store link info so I could see your store? Peter Larsen a fellow seller on eBay just started using your system for high sell through rate, it’s been great so far, thanks for your great videos, turned on many people to your work
My favorite type of lowballers are the ones who either a). cuss you out when you don't accept their offer, or b.) turn around and immediately try to sell the item for higher than my asking price AFTER I break down and accept their lowball (usually, a lot of harassment took place on their part). I've been selling eBay for a at least 5 years now, and I've had both.
You're probably my favorite reseller. Your buying style is just like mine and I've learned a lot from your BOLOs. I'm only in my second month as a reseller; I started out selling everything, had a terrible experience with a huge mistake on an antique sewing machine . Paid $25 for it, accepted an offer for $100 with free ship, after fees+shipping netted $37 and lady decided she wanted to return it. I offer free returns, and return shipping was $66, so I just told her to keep it, refunded her, and cut my losses. Hard lesson learned. Now I just do clothes and I ALWAYS charge shipping. I'm averaging 5 sales a day already and my quality of items have improved drastically with help from resellers like you. The quality is night and day now. Keep up the awesome work. I'm a faithful watcher and subscriber. You're literally helping to change my life!
My favorite story is "I'm a struggling student with a little bit of money." Then I see that they have been on eBay since 2010. I have seen this more than 10 times. What are they studying for brain surgeon?
I get a lot of the “fixed income” song and dance in my niche. It may actually be sincere in most cases. Nonetheless, I’m thinking, “Wow, that’s cool you’re getting some guaranteed money each month. I’m pretty much crossing my fingers every week that I don’t have to go out and find a traditional job.” I don’t fall for that rap, even if I think it’s 💯 true. I need people to pay up.
Man I love seeing when you've uploaded a new video. Your content is always useful and your sense of humor is great. Hope you feel better soon brother. Take care and looking forward to the next one.
I heard the algorithm likes offers so the more back and forth offers, the more ebay shows your listing to other people. And all of a sudden you get a full price sell! It happens! Hope you feel better Mr Reynolds 😂
Yep, agreed. I have my kid as my photographer. She also get all my notifications. I always tell her to watch. The more offers, the more chance it’s gonna sell for full asking price. And it happens.
When I get an offer that is way low, I counter. But offers of half the price I just say no and don’t bother to counter. Also, sometimes I get sellers trying to low ball on something I know they are going to resell.
I’ve been getting lowball offers on bundles of old things (that I relisted) so all I do is counter to what I think would still be a good deal for them and it’s worked so far. Quite happy that the relisting is paying off. I also try to keep a very low cogs in case it comes to that and bc I’m barely six months into it so I have some bad listings from my beginnings. I’ve also accepted lowballs from really polite people. Lol
Sorry about your sickness. I'll say a prayer for your healing. Thanks for posting this video. You say out loud what we Seller's think of lowballers but never say because we want to make sales. Your brazen personality is bringing Sellers together, which will make us stronger moving forward with bottom feeders of the resell world.
This is a master class. Thank you! I’ve seen a pattern among buyers who are very needy with questions pre-purchase having a much higher return rate or incidence of post-purchase problems. Have you ever blocked a potential buyer before purchase based on a sense of them being so overly needy or particular you can feel the trouble coming?
I have! I blocked them. Then they found my item on another platform. I had to take my item down completely for a few weeks because I didn't want the hassle. They were insane and it all started with several needy messages and sob stories.
I’m dealing with this on marketplace right now. I’m selling a motorcycle in great condition and people are offering me everything from cars with head, gaskets and alternators blown and chicken coops. This is preposterous. Even on the ad, I explicitly put no trades or silly lowball offers. They still try and don’t get me started on the fake check scams.
I had a Gibson J-45 up for sale a few years ago, the original price (new) was $2500, I had it up for sale used at $1250, a guy got mad at me for not accepting his low ball offer of "$300 cash" my price went closer to what the price was new for that person.
Matt, your strategies are similar to mine. I actually have a 20% window for wiggle room when I list items with "best offer." If I don't list with the best offer option, then I list with the price I want...no negotiations. I was glad to hear you say that its OK to block a low baller. I have sold to a couple low ballers before and they always leave neutral or negative feedback which pisses me off. But I also block the ridiculously low, low ballers. Mostly I don't even respond to ridiculous offers, I just let them expire. But, I always do my homework BEFORE I list an item, so I know what the market is on that item and IF I'm willing to negotiate. And I agree as well, that the sob stories are bullshit 99% of the time. They just don't work with me...I'm too damn old for that crap.
Not related to this particular content but a general “thank you” for your down to earth, real content. Sold a pair of Robert Graham jeans today. Picked them up because I looked up the sell through rate. Cha-Ching👍🏻
Take emotion out is great advice. It is not personal just business. My favorite is when the low baller tries to tell me why the item is flawed, bad, not worth my price. I always wonder if you think the item is so substandard why do they want it. Just a negotiation tactic I find annoying.
I usually don't take lowball offers personally. I always counter with my lowest acceptable price and include a note something like "This is the least I will accept for this item at this time. Thanks for your offer." So many times people will still counteroffer. I had a guy recently who declined my lowest offer twice on a very cool vintage 1940s tie I had just listed and was underpriced to begin with. After twice explaining that it was my lowest price only for him to counteroffer a lower price, I blocked him and raised the price on the item (underpriced items seem to attract lowballers for some reason). It was kind of funny, really. He kept emailing me saying "I'll take your offer now." I just stopped responding to him. His last email was "Hellooo?" I just don't have time to play the game some people want to play.
I have a guy who keeps low balling me on a pot lid that I am offering free shipping on. Low ball after low ball and him telling me he can get the same lid from the manufacturer. I told him numerous times its not worth it to me to ship at his price. His inability to understand also tells me he will probably complain once he gets the lid.
I have a tough time, more on posh than any other platform. Not all of us buy our inventory from the bins and pay 50 cents. If I have an item at $50 and you offer me $8, I don’t even bother. I’m already insulted and feel it’s rude, especially from another reseller. It’s really a pick and choose area. I got one who gave me a whole dissertation of how she was on disability, was strapped for funds, really feeling the impact of the pandemic but wanted my Timberland brand new boots for $20…REALLY? If life is that bad, go buy food not new boots. Ugh
I hate to haggle. I only recently started accepting offers at all and just refuse any unreasonable offer. If I think an offer is reasonable, I'll just accept because, as you said, I don't want to lose the customer and my time is worth more than the few dollars I might make.
because of lowballers I always list my stuff high giving myself plenty of room to negotiate. So say I have a pair of jeans worth $35, I'll list them at $45. If someone comes along and asks for the value price of $35, boom sold. If someone offers me $25, I know have wiggle room in my own price to come down giving them the illusion they're getting a good deal when in reality I'm just working down towards what I initially wanted to sell them for. I've learned this the hard way unfortunately. Ridiculous lowball offers I just straight up decline w/out bothering to negotiate. Sometimes I do take it personally though - which I shouldn't - but I do. I've had people try and tell me what something is worth, which I know what it's really worth - and they'll act like an authority on the item. I had one guy tell me some items I was selling in a lot for around $100 were basically worthless because they were missing one small piece. A week later I sold all 3 for $80. I messaged the guy back and told him what I sold them for. Petty, and I don't do that anymore, but lowballers and people who criticize your price are obnoxious and annoying.
Thankyou so much for this. I have wanted to know more about lowballers since I’m a new reseller it had been a thing I didn’t really know what to do. Now you have helped me immensely. Appreciated. So glad I found your channel. And hope you feel better soon. Keep up the good work.
Love the Ron Perlman voice, but hope you get better soon! I took the first offer of $75 plus shipping for 3 packs of 1986 Hanes white tee shirts, down from $27.95 a pack plus shipping, because I paid $2 a pack at a huge estate sale. It was my second sale since I started back up again, and I was extremely pleased. Only one issue so far I had to decline. Bothered me for a couple of days, but no more. Thank you so much for your information, it's very helpful!
Matt you got that super bass voice going. I started the video like 🤔💭, then you explained. Thanks for all the solid content brother. Appreciate you making content even when you’re not feeling 💯. Stay safe and healthy man!
I was testing out a new pair of cheap wireless headphones and clicked on his video and for the first minute before he said he was sick, I thought the headphones were bunk! 😂
I usually don’t acknowledge lowballers. Especially those that say ohh Walmart sells it for waay cheaper your listing is terrible. I’m like I could careless, go buy it there then
I recently learned that counter offering someone could help trigger the algorithm and initiate other sales, even if that one doesn’t end in a sale. I’m not sure how accurate that is, but, at least it’s activity on the account, which I believe does trigger the algorithm. So I welcome the lowballers now, instead of getting annoyed by them. I try to keep countering if I have the time, instead of declining. Great video though! I enjoy all your content 👍
I watch you because you really give awesome advice and I’m grateful for you. I also watch you because you are so funny. You say the funniest things. Blessings to you and your family.
I put no low ballers on things I tried to sell anywhere from $125 or higher. They do push you, and I do know how the market works. Thanks for the advice. To Low Ballers, I do include “ I wasn’t Born Yesterday “. I’m not sure that’s a good thing or bad? That just to inform them that I’m not here to waste my time.
Listening to this and reading the comments reminds me why I do not sell on eBay. I sell on Poshmark and FB marketplace and rarely have any issues. I price 30% high to send and accept offers. Sometimes I have full price sales. I NEVER decline. I always counter offer.
I hope you are feeling better! I'm so glad I'm not the only one who heads off a potential bad egg by blocking. I agree if they are trouble during the negotiation, they probably are not going to be a great buyer. Thank you for all of your great content!
Omg. You’re hysterical 😂😂😂😂 Cracking up listening to your thoughts on LOWBALLERS. Sorry you’re not feeling well and happy to hear your COVID negative , but I gotta tell ya, I’m digging the Burt Reynolds in you 😂😂😂 Feel better soon Matt🙃
One of the “problems” illustrated by your example, £75 for the £150 - in that instance with the two year backstory the lowballer gets what they want with a silly offer - so in their mind offering 50% has worked before so they will use it often and not feel guilty - ah well
I was told to haggle no matter the price. After 18 months of following that, I have never converted a real low baller to a decent price. So, what I've started doing is ignoring the low balls. If they continue to aggravate me, then I just block them. What REALLY ticks me off, is when I do give a great deal, then they don't pay!!!!! Blocked for sure in that case. In general, clothes can take forever to sell for any particular piece of clothing. I've had items that have been listed for 2 years sell for full price. I do accept lower offers depending on my mood. If I'm having a slow week, then I might let it go. I have a minimum price for most items. I won't get off the couch for less than $10! :P Great video!
I was listening to this video while I was getting ready and all I could picture is Michael Keaton explaining explaining lowball offers 😆🤩 (not meant to be a dig at all 😉)
This is off topic but can you make a video about where to source besides thrift stores near you? I can’t find ALMOST any of the brands you list! I think it’s because I’m in rural Georgia near Tennessee so no one lets go of their activewear or jackets. I can find a few things but man! I have been looking at ALL the thrift stores near me and I just can’t find those things that have a high sell through rate!
Love seeing when you have a new video to watch. Hoping you post more often like you used to because I love seeing your hauls and your sales! You're the one reseller who most closely reflects what I do and focuses on clothing. Keep up the great work!
@@ThriftALife no worries! Appreciate the reply. I mainly was curious to see how you titled your listings, and even more than that how you staged your photos for pants/jeans. I always find it kind of awkward to find a good way to present jeans well in photos. I've tried it a couple of different ways and I never seem completely satisfied with the outcome. Thanks!
Thank you so much for sharing your reselling knowledge! You crack me up !! I love your dry humor. I started on Poshmark during the Pandemic since I got furloughed. Trying to make it full time so I can have more time for my son.
I was convinced you were lip synching with somebody else doing the talking until you said you were sick, WTF that's a dramatic voice transformation. hope you're feeling better! also lol @ needing a men's 3XL shirt for their 3rd-time-dying mother's crossing of the river styx lmaaaaaao #accurate.
I honestly suck at negotiating generally,, (as a buyer and a seller). I usually set an auto decline amount that’s just a note to myself to “remember you’re not comfortable going below this” and avoid most low ballers. In Australia buyers only have 3 offer chances on eBay - I know it varies in other countries - which limits negotiation chances (thankfully for me). Thanks for the tips 👍 hope yr feeling better
Thanks for the info. I usually get, "My dog/cat/gerbil/sasquatch has (insert disease here) and I have thousands of dollars of vet bills." Hope you feel better soon!
Have you considered taking your older items to a consignment shop just to move them out. Of course everything must be re-ironed and on hangers. Sometimes they will let you recommend the price, at least try and get your investment money back.
The Albino & Preto brand is a Jiu Jitsu brand that has blossomed into a boutique brand and collabs with many artists, designers, etc. The chances of finding this in a thrift store or garage sale is slim to none. Most of this brand is resold on Facebook groups and face to face amongst friends. The items that are sold on eBay are bought the day of drops on their site and intended to be profited from. Kinda like sneakers, but not quite as crazy.....yet.
Good advise, I myself do not take it personally...I usually give a percentage off as a counter offer, with a personal note, they usually respond my way...now if I get a 10.00 offer for a 50.00 item...I just ignore them...wondering...do you think I should do that...thanks for your response
I get a lot of overpriced offers on eBay from scammers asking me to text them. Obviously I never accept the offer or text the number. it's annoying asf though.
I accepted a decent offer from a buyer. Still awaiting payment, because they want me to bundle another similar item, for less than I'll take for it. I made them an offer for the second item at the same % off and free shipping for that Item. It' feels like they are holding the original item hostage, lol.
Great tips. I try not to react personally but I find if you meet an extreme lowballer's offer they're not the least bit grateful. I had one bought some camera gear (parts/repair) for $20 and left me negative feedback because the idiot didn't read the listing.
this helped me calm down with a low baller who didn't really give me an insulting offer but they completely lied about their reason for doing so, claiming the item can be bought new for X amount, when I know damn well they havne't been made in 20 years and all units on the market are reman and I also know my market well enough to know I'm one of the cheapest rebuilders out there. I wanted to tell the guy to f off but I think I will just block. No point in trying to do business with people acting in bad faith. I've accepted lower offers when the person seems genuine and straight up says they only have X amount of money. But LOL if you think you know my market more than I do.
Had a higher price for something that is currently not even in production anymore and is in demand if someone really wants the item. I was charging more because of this. Dude sent me pictures saying he had “multiple sources” of the thing being cheaper new. And I told him good luck finding one. Blocked him.
Don't take it personally: Some of the best advice for anyone is business. I don't dislike the haggling. I dislike the argument over sizes when I photo the item with measuring tape visible.
You are so not alone. I think Ebay needs to have greater consequences for buyers who do this. There is a setting preference where you can block sellers who have done this “x” times in “x” many months. I just changed my settings to block if they have not paid 2 times or more in the past 12 months. Fingers crossed it helps!
Lowballing MIGHT have been believed negotiation skill once upon a time. I completely ignore and block lowballers on Facebook marketplace because I can’t possibly consider them serious buyers. The way I see it is, if they don’t want the item bad enough to make a serious offer, then they don’t want the item bad enough and they’re probably not going to show up anyway, so I ignore and block them.
I don't care about sad sob stories - if the offer is reasonable and it looks like the item isn't going to move any time soon, out the door it goes. Isn't that the guiding principle? Sounds about what you're saying. One thing I always do that spares me a lot of grief, because lowballers can frequently be problematic: I check "feedback left for others". More than two negatives - automatic block. Many times I've declined an offer, buyer comes back and pays full price. They want the item and just thought it wouldn't hurt to try to get it for a little less. No harm in that. Get well soon.
In your example of a shirt that is marked at $25, what is the average price for the shirt across all BIN comp solds for that shirt? Have you marked it up somewhat, so that you can negotiate down, or where is it in relationship to what you realistically expect to get? Feel better soon.
Some of it might be cultural. I remember going to Mexico and the price they’ll take is half sometimes. In my culture-North Africa-we insulted if there’s no haggling. So the offer button when I’m bidding triggers me. I always lower it 10% because I assume the seller has that built in. So even when the seller comes down a quarter, I’m good with it. Now I see both sides of it.
Luckily for me I have worked in sales for over 20 years so haggling was the easy part.Sorry your sick man . Again thanks for the inspiration to get me to do RUclips recorded my 7th video starting to get in the groove.
I like when I watch an item and a seller offers me like 10-15% off. I'll usually take the offer. I appreciate the effort and usually if I'm watching an item it's already a good deal so 🤷♂️
Good advice. I always enjoy your videos. "What is the Lowest price you would take for the Carhartt hat your wearing? LOL. I am kidding....Just a little humor...
LMAO that you are most vulnerable to a message from a buyer who uses proper grammar and punctuation. We all have a soft spot. 😂❤️
I had someone offer $1 on a book that was listed at $10 with free shipping. I countered with $7. They countered with $1.25. I declined and blocked them. You are right, hard lowballers will be nothing but trouble either with returns and/or bad feedback.

I liked your normal voice, but this one is dangerously smooth. I hope you feel better soon
My new strategy for dealing with offers that are too low is to just wait. So many times I’ll get a full price offer before the lower one expires.
Yeah I've discovered that when someone puts an offer on your item on ebay the algorithm makes your item more visible to others. Many times I've gotten lowball offers and then sold the item in the next day or two for full asking price, so low ballers do have value in that they can get your item seen by more people ;)

Hey Matt, just found your channel from "Dixon Pickins" video. Coming to show some love. Love the videos already, thanks.
You crack me up with your deadpan approach and your sarcasm! Keep the videos coming!
This video had the best thumbnail of any I've seen in weeks.
Manly man voice - love it 🥰
Hope you feel better soon! (BUT also hoping you record a few more videos in the meantime. 😉)
Mr. Tom Petty :)
Thankyou so much for this. I have wanted to know more about lowballers since I’m a new reseller it had been a thing I didn’t really know what to do. Now you have helped me immensely. Appreciated. So glad I found your channel. And hope you feel better soon. Keep up the good work.
They even low balled his voice 😔
I love this video so much! Very helpful, thank you for sharing these tips. I appreciate you.
Good to see you back. Hope you feel better! Also lowballers are very annoying.
I went through my blocked buyer list recently and I noticed most of them are no longer on ebay.
Thank you for the insightful content as always. I hope you're feeling better very soon and getting lots of rest.
Omg. You’re hysterical 😂😂😂😂
Cracking up listening to your thoughts on LOWBALLERS.
Sorry you’re not feeling well and happy to hear your COVID negative , but I gotta tell ya, I’m digging the Burt Reynolds in you 😂😂😂
Feel better soon Matt🙃
What?? You respond positively to a friendly, respectful offer? That's just CRAZY. 😂 Feel better!
I hope you feel better, Matt!
Literally thought there was a voice filter on this video even after you explained lmao thanks tho great content
Love seeing when you have a new video to watch. Hoping you post more often like you used to because I love seeing your hauls and your sales! You're the one reseller who most closely reflects what I do and focuses on clothing. Keep up the great work!
Also, do you have a link to your eBay store somewhere??
Thank you, Captain Picard. I keep my ebay store private, sorry to disappoint.
Feel better soon!
I appreciate the fishing analogies.
Feel better friend! :) Great video, love the carp analogy - so true!
Hope you feel better soon!
Have you considered taking your older items to a consignment shop just to move them out. Of course everything must be re-ironed and on hangers. Sometimes they will let you recommend the price, at least try and get your investment money back.
Hope you feel better soon. Great lesson today my friend.
Hope you feel better soon! Thanks for all the videos. I enjoy your no nonsense approach/advice.
I found two albino preto compression shirts in a pile of discarded free clothing. Anything can happen.
@@ThriftALife what size, and do you still have them? Bubbles is always glad to contribute.
Good advise, I myself do not take it personally...I usually give a percentage off as a counter offer, with a personal note, they usually respond my way...now if I get a 10.00 offer for a 50.00 item...I just ignore them...wondering...do you think I should do that...thanks for your response
The voice, the eyes, the beanie and oh yeah the content. It's all good....😎
I get a lot of overpriced offers on eBay from scammers asking me to text them. Obviously I never accept the offer or text the number. it's annoying asf though.
Feel better!
😂"their mother that died and resurrected and is going to die again"! That was hilarious.😂
I accepted a decent offer from a buyer. Still awaiting payment, because they want me to bundle another similar item, for less than I'll take for it. I made them an offer for the second item at the same % off and free shipping for that Item. It' feels like they are holding the original item hostage, lol.
What ended up happening
@@ThriftALife I cancled (buyer asked) :), then blocked the buyer.
How you feel better soon.Thank you for different selling perspectives 😁
Don't take it personally: Some of the best advice for anyone is business. I don't dislike the haggling. I dislike the argument over sizes when I photo the item with measuring tape visible.
The problem I’m having lately is people sending me offers , I accept , and then they don’t pay! It’s happening often ! Wth
You are so not alone. I think Ebay needs to have greater consequences for buyers who do this. There is a setting preference where you can block sellers who have done this “x” times in “x” many months. I just changed my settings to block if they have not paid 2 times or more in the past 12 months. Fingers crossed it helps!
@@porterlockwood2032 good to know I didn’t know this was an option thank you
I decline period if you lowball me I decline no negotiation
Someone offered me 1 dollar on a 80 dollar item he got blocked 🚫
Lowballing MIGHT have been believed negotiation skill once upon a time. I completely ignore and block lowballers on Facebook marketplace because I can’t possibly consider them serious buyers. The way I see it is, if they don’t want the item bad enough to make a serious offer, then they don’t want the item bad enough and they’re probably not going to show up anyway, so I ignore and block them.
I don't care about sad sob stories - if the offer is reasonable and it looks like the item isn't going to move any time soon,
out the door it goes. Isn't that the guiding principle? Sounds about what you're saying. One thing I always do that spares me a lot
of grief, because lowballers can frequently be problematic: I check "feedback left for others". More than two negatives - automatic block.
Many times I've declined an offer, buyer comes back and pays full price. They want the item and just thought it wouldn't hurt to try to
get it for a little less.
“No! I don’t negotiate with terrorists” 😂😂😂😂😂
Luckily for me I have worked in sales for over 20 years so haggling was the easy part.Sorry your sick man . Again thanks for the inspiration to get me to do RUclips recorded my
7th video starting to get in the groove.
My favorite is when I list stuff for 22.00 and get offers of 20.00…. Like really..? Lol
Same!
I’m a hard baller to a low baller! And they will come back. If they don’t then no! I’m lowball blocker, too! 💕
Ohhhlala...you sound great...talk Matt talk :-)....ah yeah- also great content...you never dissapoint!
Hope you feel bette Ron!!
