    1:16:22 In case anyone is curious (and because it gives me an excuse to actually use all the useless horror game info I know), Monster Party was originally going to be a game called Parody World: Monster Party where the sendups and homages to classic horror movies and characters were much more explicit (ie. The pitcher plant being a normal flytrap with a mic and amp that says "Feed me Seymore!", the Pumpkin headed dude being a hunter from Planet of the Apes, and a ton of others). It was changed late in development because of the legal risks, but a complete rom of the OG version fully translated is online if you want to look. Played it myself and it plays identical, just makes way more sense.
    Glad I finally get to use this useless info somewhere.

      Yup, Monster Party is infamous for being pretty bizarre and going through a strange development cycle. Here are a few more Fun Facts:
      -If you're an OG, you probably remember learning about Monster Party from a site called Syd Lexia. The author noted that, while the liquid on the final game's title screen is just green slime, there's a prerelease promo image where it's a pool of blood. Given what we know from the prototype ROM (see below), it looks like the color was changed to meet Nintendo of America's censorship rules. That doesn't explain why a short but extremely gruesome body horror scene in the ending was kept, though.
      -Syd also argued that the sudden shift in atmosphere as you pass the cactus was deliberate, not to catch players off guard, but to trick the higher-ups at Bandai and Nintendo. His theory was that the companies' overworked supervisors would have only cleared the game's benign first level before giving it a stamp of approval, assuming the rest of the game was like that. I disagree with that personally, but regardless, the cactus scene is a cool and iconic part of the Monster Party experience.
      -For some reason, they shelved the Japanese version just before release, and it only came out in the US. Someone found a prototype Famicom copy, and it ended up being sold between private collectors for a while. Thankfully, someone dumped the ROM and released it publicly in 2014. It's functionally complete, but a bit glitchier and less polished than the released NES version, and it still has the more blatant horror references. It also has the bloody title screen from Syd Lexia's old promo shot.
      -As noted, a lot of the parodic aspects were made more subtle in the US version. The popular belief is that they toned it down because the American legal system was (and to a lesser extent, still is) more stringent than the Japanese system when it comes to the line between parody/satire/pastiche and plagiarism/copyright infringement.
      --The pitcher plant boss was originally a Venus flytrap, and its boss room came complete with a set of overhead stage lights and an amp on its right. You could jump on top of the amp for a better shot at the boss, and in fact, _you still can in the NES version._ The platform is still there, but the graphics for the amp and stage lights were overwritten by black tiles, so there's just an unexplained invisible floor that you won't find about unless you happen to run past the boss and jump.
      --The pumpkin-headed bedsheet ghost boss was originally an ape that rode a horse and (I think) threw spears at you. Its Japanese intro dialogue translates to "Seize him! I will give you the honor of becoming my slave!" An obvious Planet of the Apes reference, and in the prototype, there's even a cartoonish depiction of the ruined Statue of Liberty in the background of the boss room. Like Not-Audrey II's stage equipment, the developers removed the Statue's remains by replacing the graphics with black tiles, so technically they still exist in the NES version as distinct assets. This time it had no effect on the gameplay, but even before the release of the prototype gave it context, astute ROM-hackers had already discovered this patch of visually identical but programmatically unique background tiles.

    1:24:00 In case anyone's curious why names in NES credits are so weird (including stuff like the first two Zelda games, the Castlevania series etc and not only this funny Eversion-progenitor kusoge), a lot of companies employed a "you must use funny nicknames when crediting yourself" policy to prevent competitors from stealing their developers. (If you've been following the industry discourse, Konami's HR department still seems to believe it's the 1980s...)

    I remember playing Chiller on an arcade machine in the batting cages back in 1989. The crossbow peripheral it used was the same exact one in the much more light-hearted game aptly named "Crossbow" which was like Lemmings where you had to shoot everything threatening the NPCs rather than build things for them. It was so horrifyingly violent, I stopped playing while the game was still in progress because I felt sick and like I was doing something wrong.

    Ultraseven keeps kaiju in capsules that he's able to throw out for battle, and when they become too weak to continue he even calls them back into the capsule with a similar laser-like effect. yo, sweet home is actually lit as shit! sadly, it would take a while to properly get through, and in true NES fashion, it's not exactly straightforward. if anything, please look up the tie in movie because it's so hilariously goddamn awful. I can't help but point and shout "we can get out!" whenever I see the moon through a window because of how awful the acting was in that disasterpiece.
    It's also probably for the best that you didn't play too much of sweet home on stream as well given that instead of being a silly scare game, it's a genuinely morose game with a fairly serious tone. there are frequent and vivid depictions of gore and body horror! sidestepping potential spoilers, people scream to you as they're burnt alive, the two male party members are bisected at the waist should their health hit 0 (and their corpses remain should you want to use their bodies for storage), and one character straight up gets his flesh vaporized from his bones while you helplessly watch. it is impressively horrifying and fucked up for an NES game and I love it a shitload. booti pls don't play, is arrrrpeegee and would require much more time and focus than you could spare it.

    • @That_One_Xatu

      Sweet Home would 100% be a game Vinny would play.... IF it were remade. In fact, I think it really should be remade so more people play it; really, I think it just needs quality of life improvements and 16bit graphics. ... But it would have to be by fans since (unless things have changed with the licensing) I read an article like 5 years ago saying Sweet Home the game and the movie have been stuck in legal limbo since the directors of the two hated each other due to creative differences or something. I forget, but iirc the basic idea is that the article was about the reason Resident Evil didn't stay the Sweet Home remake it began development as is because it was impossible for them to get the IP.

    • @warbossgegguz679
      @warbossgegguz679 2 года назад +1

      Most licensed games made by JP devs have a way higher bar for quality, even when it comes to them doing Western IPs like Capcom and Konami's licensed games. Sweet Home is a cool and obviously super important game... but it's REALLY clunky even for an NES/FC RPG. The party system is cool though, and obviously it + Alone in the Dark gave us RE.
      As far as the movie goes, I like it in the same way I like Housu and other schlock horror movies. Is fun. The acting may be more of a cultural barrier though, since JP acting being about as subtle as a brick to the head is intentional thanks to Kabuki informing their style of dramatic acting. Same reason why people think subs sound fine but dubs sound over the top... because the Japanese is also over the top, it's just harder to know that if you don't know the language.

    • @warbossgegguz679
      @warbossgegguz679 2 года назад +2

      @@That_One_Xatu I mean, tbh I like the movie, but it was definitely not worth reupping the license both because by then the movie was almost 6 years old + it let them have creative freedom. Also, it's a fun movie but it's not like high quality cinema, lol. It's a trashy JP horror movie a la House, Grudge, Ring, etc. Junji Ito it is not, lol.

      given that binyort played that zelda ii game maker port, it might not actually be a waste of time (well, a waste of time for everyone but the 50 people who are still enthusiastic about this game) to try that myself for sweet home 🤔 I could stand to take a break from my current works in progress, but given how dogshit off-the-rails passionate I feel about game development, that may something to bring to the table for spooptober 2025 or something. well, won't know if I don't try!

    I wanted to comment on the CD thing. I used to work down the street from a convention center and one day there was a comic book convention at it so I went after work. As I was waiting to cross the street I saw these three guys hurrassing people about thier CD's to the point of running out into traffic. When I was allowed to walk I gave a huge birth, walking deep across the street to avoid them but one ran up to me telling me to take his CD, that it was important to him to get his music out there, etc. I just waved him away saying thank you but no. He kept going and going. It was clear it was rap and I was honest and said dude, I'm sure your great but I hate rap. If you force me to take your CD I will throw it in that trash can right over there. It would be better to give it to someone who will enjoy it. This did not stop him at all. I had never heard of this scam but It was obvious what was happening. Especially after I told him I'd throw it out and he's still shoving the CD towards me telling me he's a local artist that needs exposure. You want your CD exposed to the trash can? I said I was local too and not interested. He didn't stop until I finally got to the convention doors. I'm sure if I even touched that CD I'd be yelled at and hurrased and probably attacked. I'm sure i looked like a mark because I was a white dude in a full suit but I'm not stupid.

    The Werewolf game isn't bad at the beginning,
    it is one of those games you need to know all the basics
    even hidden moves ones, and know power-ups rules too,
    like the human form got a projectile attack you can keep using,
    it's a charge attack move and does double damage then the punch.
    But further through the game it does becomes BS.
    alot of these games are not "casual" friendly games

I might have had a few others, but yeah, that's the one's I usually tried to play.

    Man, New York City doesn't seem safe with people forcing CDs onto you and then charging you $40 for them or people intentionally bumping into you and doing that scam that Eric Andre did with the porcelain laptop (but not as a joke). I don't know how Joel was able to avoid all that stuff although even Joel overtipped a taxi driver because tipping isn't a thing in Sweden? Like bad things happen everywhere don't get me wrong, but Vinny's bad stories of New York City makes me not want to go to big cities in the very country I live in with seemingly the only advantage of the big cities being more activities/stores outside of your home to spend money on such as all the unique/quirky/expensive restaurants such as ones where you drink ass juice.

    Fester's Quest manual basically says "This game is no fun without a rapid fire controller". Once you get one of those, it's actually good. You still have to deal with gun and whip downgrades, but a lot of the enemies are definitely easier to deal with. Personally, I'd rather see a hack that cuts all enemy HP to 1/5 so it's playable without rapid controller, though the splitting ooze may still be problematic. Even with rapid fire that thing can totally just get out of control.
