the best part about action 52 is its cartridge, which has extended memory (which explains the large amount of shit and actual music samples like the YEAAA WOW thing), so that means that they could've legitimately made a gigantic, amazing game (for NES standards) with all that memory. Instead, they made this.

The cartridge was designed to hold 60 games, and the games were developed 12 hours a day over 3 months by 4 college students.
They really didn't know enough about game design or had enough time to make every game an actually good one.

Well for 1) the expanded cartridge probably cost a lot more to produce than a standard NES cart, so you still need to charge more and "50 games in 1 cart" is a much more persuasive sell than "trust us it's really really cool", especially when 2) the SNES hit the market the same year, so even a game significantly more advanced than anything a normal NES cart could do would still be totally outclassed by anything on the SNES. The install base was obviously still there, but it's never going to impress anyone if it's dropping in the middle of the SNES launch marketing campaign.

It's an actual miracle that they made 52 video games and not even one of them is fun. Statistically, at least one of them should be fun, even if only a little. That they made 52 terrible games is genuinely impressive.
Iirc they scammed young devs into sending making game demos. They didnt get paid and also had very limited time.

A number of amateur developers took it upon themselves to begin an initiative entitled 'Action 52 Owns'. In this, they attempted to take individual selections of Action 52 and make them into good games. FrankieSmileShow's take on Non Human is one of the most awesome things to grace mandkind. Yes. Mandkind.
It was a great project that sadly never got properly finished. I followed it for a few years and and then it just kinda died..

This game is very symbolic of those game devs on Steam Greenlight, "Digital Homicide", that Jim Sterling had to deal with. They want to make 50 or so shit games before they'd allocate that same amount of time to something that might not be complete shit.
Shane McZane The main difference is that while DigiHom's crappiness was a result of sheer laziness, Action 52's shit factor was born from a creator with delusions of grandeur exepecting his rather green 4-man dev team to make 52 games in just 3 months. Look up the concept to console vid on it. It's an interesting story.

Two Fun Facts : 1- the Cheetamen is called Action Gamemaster in the menu because in the original concept of the last game you would have to combat against the bosses of the precedent 51 games, to get a "Game 52" throphy. Then this idea was rejected, but it was too late to change the name; so they introduced a guy named Action Gamemaster to justify the title.
2- Bubblegum Rosie is based on the girlfriend of one of the developers, a blonde girl who loved bubblegums.

I actually have an idea about why the fall damage occurs before hitting the ground. I think they might've programmed it so that you die when you fall a certain distance rather than hitting the ground after a certain distance. Or something, I don't know anything about video game programming.
I think you're probably exactly right, the real question is who in the name of fuck thought fall damage in a platformer was a good idea.
I actually made it through a few levels in Billy Bob and believe it or not but the game changes into Cheetahmen at the third or fourth level

Shino Hunter Well, they aren't shoveling out shovelware so much as they are committing terrible business practices, like the shitty system they're trying to impose on RUclipsrs. The only really terrible game I can think of in recent years is Yoshi's New Island, and that was contracted to a third party (I thought) and it was only really just a terribly mediocre game with awful, repetitive music on top of it all.

I read an interview from a Dev that the owner of Active Enterprises isn't exactly a scam artist.
He had the business know-how as a businessman, and he saw his kid and friends playing bootleg Nintendo cartridges. So he thought: let's make a multi-game Nintendo cartridge, the kids will love that!
The problem is he didn't know how videogames worked, were made, etc. so he hired only a few new developers to make a crapload of games for a multi-cart, and they all turned out to be the terrible Action 52.
However I think releasing that cart to stores can be considered scammy, but not the original intent.
I think one of the devs of Action 52 is still making games as a hobby! Though I couldn't find where their games are published.

The creator of this game was so delusional he convinced himself that Action 52 was going to be so massively successful that it would have sequels on every game console, a TV show, action figures, and more. He said he wanted a robot cheetah advertising the Cheetah Men game or some shit, too.

Don't forget his ridiculous console idea, which would've been this monstrous handheld console called the Action Gamemaster. It would play Genesis, NES, SNES, and CD-Rom games, alongside it's own game library that would've included Cheetahmen III. It would've had a lot of other shit, too, most bafflingly a cigarette lighter for vehicles.

Thankfully if the stories are right, not many parents stuck to that mentality long, since alot of complaints got out the games were super buggy and many didn't even play, especially for the price demanded.

The one game that makes you wanna channel the AVGN.
It's a brilliant example why you should never try to copy Chinese black market underworld bootleg games for mainstream consumption, even if they are amazing for having tons of games on them in the first place.
