I love movies and games but I’ve always been more a movie person so this has been a really fun series to watch. There’s literally hundreds of films I’d be curious to hear his reaction on. With October right around the corner I hope they do more straight up horror movies for a while
Matty's rant is great. I completely agree. A lot of people feel like they need their opinions consistently validated which to me, strikes me as a strange insecurity. It should be okay for people to have different opinions.
Tarantino is my all time favorite film maker and I loved hearing Matty's original thoughts on inglorious basterds. I think it's a masterpiece, but hearing why Matty didn't like it gave me something new to think about with it.
The evolution of Matty's take has been great to witness. Preference is absolutely fine, and he is now understanding the art much much better. Absolutely love this series 👏
Locke… You gotta have matty watch die hard 2 at Christmas, because it is ALSO a Christmas movie :-) And for his comedy comment, how he needs to expand… Spaceballs, Blazing Saddles, and for Halloween coming up… Young Frankenstein
It’s a wonderful life is a fantastic movie, such a good choice for favorite movie. It’s a holiday classic for a reason. Would be interested to hear a review of it someday
Hey no worries about difference of opinions, that’s exactly why I’m watching this series because I want to hear your opinion and not forcing yourself to like something because the audience does. You’ve reviewed 20 movies so far that are all over the place in terms of tone, genre, execution, and style etc. and everyone has their own preferences and tastes; everybody who has seen all these movies would absolutely rank them differently from each other with wildly hot takes in each one. That’s why talking about movies is so fun, it’s fun discussing why we liked and didn’t like in the movies we watch. For the record I agree with your take on Aliens, I do enjoy the film but I think it pales in comparison to the first film. I actually have a hot take that Alien 3 is a better movie than Aliens, a lot of alien fans hate that movie for some reason and I’m always defending it lol. I will say that Die Hard is one of my favorite movies though, but I can understand your reasons for not enjoying it that much lol.
I watched the Matrix for the first time like 2ish years ago. It was so amazing and I was so excited to watch the second one. Unfortunately, I absolutely hated it and never watched the 3rd one. Interested to see what Matty thinks, since we’re roughly the same age and both were deprived of so many classics lol
Matrix 1 is a stone cold classic, easily one of the best movies ever made. The sequels get progressively worse with each one. Matrix 4 did the impossible and was somehow even worse than 3. I’d watch matrix 3 any day over 4 lol.
The movies I’m most excited for Matty to see because I think he’ll adore them are: Kill Bill 1+2, Oppenheimer, Dune 1+2, Django Unchained, Casablanca, The Martian.
Pirates 2 and 3 were filmed at the same time which is why those 2 films connect so well to each other. Those movies almost feel like a one giant movie with an intermission in the middle (and I mean that as a compliment, I love these movies).
I really can't wait for him to see more comedy movies Planes Trains and Automobiles would be hopefully amazing as well as Spaceballs and maybe something with Richard Pryor maybe
@@alwayzzootedgaming4334 my least favorite of his is Death Proof. Jackie Brown is alright, not a bad movie but i rarely watch this one. Hateful 8 is next for me, again not a bad movie but I don’t go back to this one as often as his others. His other 6 films I have watched and rewatched countless times.
I never understand why ppl get bent over others opinions.. The world would be awful if everyone had the same opinion. Also, PLEASE COVER THE PIRATES MOVIES!!!
pretty solid list though im not familiar with the order your watching movies in. surprises me lord of the rings wasn't in your wheelhouse, specifically the first one anyways. for me i put that around matrix. very immersive for me. great world building and character interactions with the worlds.
Shouldnt of even looked at the old list. Seemed like it got over confusing and was in real time sorta influencing as it goes. But i do get that comparing these can be kinda hard
Lock, please don’t let Matty watch The Irishman before Casino. Casino is master class along with Goodfellas, but Irishman is so hit or miss, it might turn off Matty to the idea of another 3 hour Scorsese movie. Casino first!
@@samd2013 I was referring to the part in the video where Locke calls out Irishmen for being fucking ridiculous for casting DeNiro and Peshi at age 76 and 79 respectively. Wolf of Wall Street is great, but my personal favorite Scorsese movie is the Color of Money or maybe The Departed.
@@yaboiflats6986 problem for me is I feel like the franchise barely starts then. Like I don't like the sequels, and I feel the first one is over rated on rewatch. Its exposition overload until the last 20 mins. It doesn't leave anything to the viewers imagination. Its like if a video had tutorials all the way until the last level (the lobby fight).
At the end of the day it’s still an opinion, but I feel like using subversion (or the lack there of) as a measuring stick is a very slippery slope. One that will sometimes (and already has) leave you wanting when everyone else is satisfied. Some movies in the way they are designed need subversion and massive twists in order to work and be compelling. However a lot of great movies are designed to not need those to be entertaining/worthwhile. Waiting on the twist when it isn’t coming is definitely going to make you feel strange and unfulfilled. That in turn moves your opinion down of a story that was never trying to subvert in the first place- which it shouldn’t be penalized for. Just a thought that I feel would help bring more enjoyment of some titles on this list and others I know are coming down the line. Still love this series and seeing fresh eyes on classics!
Just watched aliens. And yeah, agree with matty, its kinda meh. It was just a bunch of people making bad decision after bad decision. And the ending with the dude knowing about the aliens and trying to sneak them through customs for money seemed obvious. Maybe if the characterd didnt act so brain dead i woulda liked it more
I wonder if you watch "Robocop" if you'd enjoy the balance of sci-fi, action, and social commentary. On the surface it can appear to be a popcorn "turn your brain off" action movie, but it really has some layers to it.
Sunshine (2007) is also one of my favorites, it’s unfortunately a very overlooked movie. Danny Boyle and Alex Garland are both at their best in my opinion when Garland writes and Boyle directs. Sunshine has some of my favorite music in any movie, John Murphy has written some good stuff.
While I will agree that there are a lot of people that just straight up get mad when you do or don't like something that they do or don't like, and they need to get over it, but I will say that there are a percentage of people who, still shouldn't let you like what you like and vice versa, but also aren't coming from a place of hate I think these people may be think that there's something that you missed or something that you didn't quite get or something. And while that's still could be misguided I think they just want to make sure that you're not missing an angle or something. But I totally agree in this day and age it's like people have been conditioned to not be able to comprehend somebody having a different opinion than them
When I first saw ‘Blade runner’ I didn’t get the hype. Someone who heard my opinion said that I didn’t understand it and I need to watch it again. So I did, and… well, I understood it more and liked it a bit more, but still didn’t reveread it as much as others. I told this story to show that sometimes the people you talk about are right (And BTY, when I watched at theaters ‘Blade runner 2049’ I liked it a lot, and finally understood why people love this franchise so much)
I think it's going to be very interesting to see how he views these legendary action movies such as Aliens as he sees more and more movies. A lot of the so-called movie snobs and critics love these action movies for the thrills and tension they can provide, and are able to stand right next to great character piece dramas from the likes of Scorsese and Francis Ford Coppola. These are the kind of people who often criticize weak action movies for their lack of substance, yet find these to be close to masterpieces. There's a reason there's a different reception between a fantastic action movie like aliens and a terrible one like transformers The last Knight. Both are big budget action movies that aren't necessarily shooting for insane twists, or powerful character arcs, even though I would say aliens does have one, yet managed to stay relevant 40 years after the fact when so many other action movies haven't. And I'm not just saying this because aliens is one of my top four favorite movies of all time, and I'm still salty lol. Also for some of these movies that you didn't appreciate as much, I would definitely recommend looking into why some of these people consider them so great, after filming the reviews. Not to change your opinion, but instead to get a better appreciation and understanding for what makes them classics. It can really help to deepen your appreciation for film in a way that you might not have been able to just with your own thoughts.
Your rant about the Alien and Aliens thing really hit me because ive recently just watched the Star Wars OG trilogy and Prequels for the first time and my god the OG Trilogy to me is just so average and kinda boring with maybe the exception of Empire? My favourite of the Star Wars movies so far is Episode 3 and as much as I hated Episodes 1 and 2. They at least attempt to add some depth and flair to the world with its politics and stuff (even if a lot of it doesnt make sense under scrutiny). Like yeah. I get that the OG trilogy was 70s and 80s... They are great for the time but they dont hold up and I dont think any of the Star Wars films are particularly great? I wouldnt put any of them above a C in a movie tier list imo. Feel free to crucify me lol
I don’t think it will, I’m predicting he’ll like Kill Bill more than the other Tarantino films but I don’t think it’s going to crack his top 10. Excited to see what he thinks of both volumes though
It's hard to watch these videos and abstain from recommending a whole bunch of films at once. Clearly there's a long way ahead, even in terms of Hollywood classics. My one suggestion is to go more international in the future. France, Germany, Japan, Russia/USSR and other cultures have a lot to offer.
It's funny cause Matty is proving the aliens fans right by saying that people who've never seen the alien franchise will love the romulus film since they won't know a majority of it is just a bunch of aliens films mashed into one lol Also expecting aliens to just be alien again is pretty shortsighted since the whole reason why the first film works is due to now "knowing" what the creature is. So to just do that again in a sequel would be pointless and lame since you know the creature already so the more creature building in the sequel is smart. Also just say you dont get the political satire and messaging of saidovies since it's quite obvious your a little green on such things lol.
The more I watch Interstellar, the more mediocre I find it. It’s just a bargain bin 2001: A Spade Odyssey. How in God’s name do you claim to love sci-fi and not have 2001 on your list. Lol
Wow I didn't expect Matty to put Inglorious Bastards at #1 but tge mad lad did it
