This is an incredible trilogy. I grew up on these, and it's just so, so good. I'm really happy they definitely didn't make more movies that tainted these at all because these three movies are definitely the only three Indiana Jones movies ever made ever.
I’m sooooo sad! The casual movie goer turned buff is such a great concept and you guys nailed it. I am so bummed the show stops here. I would love to see Matty's reaction Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and the Daiper Full of Dissentary. Maybe on Constellation or maybe some one offs. @samd2013 To quote Steven Spielburg "The movie has a compromised on amount of ____ in it." It is not underrated, did you forget Shia vine swinging with the monkeys, the jeep ride over the blind cliff face to be saved by random tree, "part time" line delivery etc etc. It was the last movie that did together for a reason.

I'm honestly shocked that the consensus ISN'T that Elsa gave Donovan the wrong chalice on purpose. I was always under the impression she intended to betray him and save Indy, especially the shot of her after giving Donovan the chalice. She ALMOST had a redemption but fumbled it at the last-minute by greed.
Yeah I went back and rewatched the scene and it's blatantly obvious in the lead-up. He says "I'm not an historian, I have no idea" and she very clearly has a look of *oh really? mwa-haha* She then picks up the nearest cup and hands it to him smirking, all-but trying not to laugh at him. There's even a look between her an indy where he clearly knows what she's done, and she shakes her head telling him to not intervene. After he dies she even says "It would not be made out of gold"
I thought that too when I was a kid that she had a change of heart when she saw Harry's dad get shot. Can't confirm my thoughts though, been a while since I watched last
I’m not going to lie, I got so happy hearing that you guys might do a special episode if/when you guys watch Crystal Skull and Dial of Destiny, I’ll be here for that for sure!
This is my favorite Indy movie. I bet I've watched it at least 200 times. When I was around 10 years old I watched it every day for several months. I'd come home from school and start it and just let it play in the background. I don't know exactly why but this one just clicks with me.
Hearing Matty talk about the formative years of movies being the 80s makes me smile. It goes back way longer. I would love love love for him to see The Cabinet od Doctor Caligari, Metropolis, M, or any Hitchcock (Rope, North by Northwest may be the best for him with regards to narrative structure) or Kubrick. If by chance you check these out, that would be rad
I believe that Elsa did kill Donovan as after he dies she says "it could not have been made of gold," referring to the grail. I'm sure Indy knew that so she didn't really help him, but I think she wanted Donovan out of the way so she could claim the grail.
I saw this in the theatre back in 89 as an 11 year old. Was my introduction to Indiana Jones and then went on to watch the other films right afterwards. I feel like Raiders is the most iconic of the original movies, but I find Last Crusade the most rewatchable.
I remember when I got to my rewatch of “crystal skull” my entire watch party agreed, say what you will about that movie at least Indie had a beautiful ending. To which I smugly proclaimed “thank goodness there won’t be another film that ruins this beautiful ending!” We would then watch “dial of destiny” a week later. Give crystal skull a go Matty, for the final few minutes at least.
Fantastic video! But guys watch the Grail scene again. The movie telegraphs that Elsa knew she was handing the wrong cup to Donavin. Of course she's only doing this for her own gain, but she does "assist" Indy at a critical moment. But yeah, ultimately she doesn't learn the true lesson of the film, and pays the price.
Connery turned down the Morpheus role in The Matrix and Gandalf in LotR. He took the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen because he (and his agent, presumably) was tired of missing out on massively successful genre franchises. Then he retired.
You’re probably not going to hate on the newer Indy movies as much, simply because you’re a newer (or more newly activated) fan. There was a 20-year wait for Crystal Skull and a 15-year wait for Dial of Destiny, and both of them had that original trilogy to live up to. Embracing the serial nature of Indy is helpful, as even though Dial is chronologically the final Indy story, and Last Crusade is a near-perfect cap to the OG film legacy, Indiana Jones was intended as a pastiche on weekly/monthly serialized adventures with this rogue archaeologist. It wasn’t meant to be a short and sweet trilogy, more like a comic book.
I was wondering if maybe on Duke you can add movie recap as a bonus!!! Or a every now and again thing I know it can be hard but I would love to keep recommending movies and possibly get the Duke audience in on it!!
Raiders is better. It's amazing from beginning to end. Crusade is great. But after the prologue, there's a 40 minute gap of standard storytelling. Once Indy's dad shows up, the movie finally finds its identity and it's amazing. If the first half of the movie had been as great as the second half, it would be a contender for best in the series. But since it wasn't, Raiders wins
For what it’s worth even though I’m not the biggest fan of Dial of Destiny, I don’t think it’s as bad as the sequel trilogy. I’ll always be a Crystal Skull apologist/defender though lol

Crystal Skull is so underrated! It’s the last Indy film with Lucas and Spielberg

I love Raiders and Last Crusade but Last Crusade is my favorite out of all of them.
