One movie that I’d really like you guys to watch would be Place Beyond the Pines. It’s a Ryan gosling movie. It really changed the way I view storytelling and writing. Very unique and impactful. Departed is amazing.
Place beyond the pines is an often overlooked movie, saw it in theaters at release and remember nobody talking about the film. Glad to see people have since discovered it .
Matty too held up on there being a 3rd one. We are rating the second one rn. I dont like that every question asked to him was "idk cuz i havnt seen the third one". Matty, in the future i would try to get out of your own head and focus on the movie at hand for what it is
What does it matter, at least on a first watch, how impactful it is on the trilogy? Just enjoy, or don't, the film in front of you. I've never heard someone say "hmm, not sure how I feel about Empire until I've seen ROTJ"
People did complain about Empire at the time because, much like this film, the story felt incomplete and it was clearly setting up for a followup sequel.
I’m so glad you liked this one! I was afraid you might not because of its cliffhanger ending. Pirates 2 is sometimes my favorite of the original pirates trilogy (I sometimes jump between 1 and 2 as my favorite). I absolutely love At Worlds End also, but 2 barely edges out the third one for me because of the Dead Man’s Chest ending. That completely blew me away when I saw it in theaters back in the day. Pirates 2 and 3 were made at the same time which is why the films feel like a part 1 and part 2 to a big story, compared to the self contained nature of the first film. I love revisiting this trilogy often (I don’t think 4 is awful or as bad as many make it out to be, but i don’t like it as much as the main trilogy. 5 I don’t really like). Can’t wait to hear the review on the departed next week!
It's funny the little details Matty missed, barbossa said in his one line what he's after "what's become of my ship" and jack did kinda redeem himself, he came back to save the crew in the end of dead man's chest
What you said about games 2 vs movies 2's. Games feel like a more of an improvements where movies feel like a story unfinished even when it's a great story.
I might be a sucker for movie 2s, but there’s a ton of them that I think are as good as the first; Pirates 2, LOTR 2, The Dark Knight, Empire, Insidious 2, Saw 2, etc.
Small correction. Dead Man’s Chest grossed 1.07 Billion at the world wide box office, not 1.7 Billion. Still massively succesful, and it was the third film in history to gross over a billion world wide (with Titanic and LOTR:Return of the King being the other two)
I liked it, but you can tell this was not the original plan when making the first film. So much of the conflict and drama between the main leads started feeling so contrived and unnecessarily drawn out over the course of these 2 sequels to the point where I felt totally exhausted of them. I walked out of the theater after Pirates 3 so burned out that I've had zero motivation to watch any other sequel in the franchise, and I still haven't. Curse of the Black Pearl is still easily the best in the series for me.
Pirates 1 was a story that had a beginning/middle/end and wrapped up its story nicely but at the same time it lent itself well for sequels, mainly in telling a cool story and introducing cool characters in a unique world. Kindof in the same way that Raiders of the lost ark did. But I do remember right when Black Pearl coming out wondering about Bootstrap Bill though because of the whole curse thing. With Pirates 2/3 being written and filmed as a 2-parter story, it’s bound that by not having the “complete” story in either of those films could put people off. However I think that both 2 and 3 have their own sub beginning/middle/end arcs in a grander story with a much bigger beginning/middle/end.
Curious to know if Lock saw that No Country For Old Men is getting a Criterion Collection release in December. Super hype for this. Can't wait to hear Mattys reaction to Departed
I personally think this is the weakest one of the trilogy. It definitely has its moments, but it starts to really embrace the stupidity and nonsensical plot elements. 3 is much more enjoyable, but nothing touches the first.
I love the whole trilogy, I think each film embraces a different tone. Sometimes I’m in the mood for one tone over the other. For Pirates 2, I love darker aspect and the “sea monster-y” tone of it. Also kraken music lol.
Can I just offer a recommendation that when you do these just talk about the film from start to finish. Then you can address scenes throughout the movie. It just feels a bit all over the place.

With Matty enjoying the Pirates movies I think we can safely say he’ll enjoy Indiana Jones (as long as he appreciates and understands the Pulp)

Matty, you deserve wayyy more views on these videos. Great work!

How many people did you actually ask that question at the time in between those movies? If you had asked, who knows.
@@gregorygeorge8695 Jesus Drax 🤦♂
I NEED the Kill Bill Vol. 2 episode, I’m reliving seeing these movies through the first time through Matty 🤣
Showing clips from the films during conversation would be really cool

My favorite of the original trilogy honestly

Love the idea of making videos on series once you are done watching a trilogy or so. I think that’s fantastic.
