- DETAILING 101 - Iron & Tar Removers - Everything You Need To Know. Chemical decontamination of the paint is important in order to remove bonded contaminants before using a clay bar. A clay bar alone can’t remove all forms of bonded contamination. In this video, I explain how the process works and why we do these steps.

Metal fallout can be seen on light colored paint: orange looking rust spots. Those metal particles (iron or ferrous material) adhere to the surface and begin to oxidize and rust.
Also known as fallout removers, iron removers help remove iron particles from the painted surfaces. The iron particles come from brake dust, railroad tracks and industrial fallout. If left unattended, they car cause corrosion pitting, scratches and swirls.
Tar removers quickly remove tar, traffic film, asphalt, bug guts, tire marks, adhesives, road grime, grease, and more.
Iron & tar removers, paired with clay bars, ensure the best possible decontamination and leave the surface feel smooth-as-glass.

" Organisation is the key to success " - Cicero - In Ancient Rome ..... I simply Love the LINKS to the English Speaking world.......and to products ... It is a FULL SERVICE here....Super! ..... I would NOT have got into detailing so quickly without Pan being so organised and giving so much detail. Does he know he is becoming a well-loved cult figure in England. I even mentioned this You Tube channel to my neighbour the other day.. who came to me for some scuffs on a van he rented he did not do that looked like they were covered up previously coming back from London to the Cotswolds. I was chuffed to bits he asked........ I had a few things to operate on in my arsenal of car products and some common sense from watching the videos to have a go ! " Pan the Organiser " is a phrase with some meaning and trust in the UK" . What a journey this entire series is!
Hi Pan. Can you make a video about the most productive way to detail a used or CPO car/ your not too old neglected car? Up to say 6 years old. Something that has never been significantly detailed. I would like to self detail and maintain my 2019 CPO Toyota Corolla Hatchback XSE 6speed manual.
Pan I know you hear this a lot.. But I legit really enjoy your videos!! Watching your knowledge dumps is just as soothing as detailing cars for me :)
Thanks Robert! I always appreciate the support and positive feedback, as producing these videos really takes a lot of time and effort. 👍🏻
@@PanTheOrganizer your efforts are tremendously appreciated! Love the videos, Pan.
Wow, had time on a rainy day to watch many of you vids. I just spent $280 (US) on all kind s of products. Can't wait for a nice day to get me and my 3 sons cars detailed. They are excited at my new passion. (almost retied) Keep'em coming. You have a lot of valuable info I love. You don't just show us, you explain in detail how the products work. two thumbs up...
I totally understand you! Even after 25 years of detailing, I still get excited everytime UPS/FedEX pulls up with a delivery and I get to open the box, test new products, and enjoy the detailing process. :)
And thank you for taking the time to always give me such great feedback. It really motivates me to continue releasing great videos for you all.
Thank you so much for all the technical information in this video. Detailers need to have some understanding of the chemistry of our products and how it works so that we can make informed decisions in each situation. You've taken 101 to the next level and I'm looking forward to the next video.
Thanks Amber! I appreciate the feedback. :)
I dare say PtO has taken it to Level 202.
He enjoys helping other ppl. Thats real difficult to find, nowadays :/
Ive been watching and thinking about his helpful videos, and definitely, the content is much more valuable than a 101.
Another awesome tutorial.
Not only what to do, and what to use, but also why you are doing it in the first place. How it works. What NOT to do.
Knowledge is power!
Thanks Kevin! :)
Thank you Pan for sharing your knowledge and wisdom in all things detailing related. I think the fact that you have the science 🧪 background to explain the chemicals, combined with your real world experience makes your videos the best on RUclips.

Let’s go! Have been only claying my poor baby past 3-4 years. Completely skipped this chemical step. You have a whole series going so I’ll definitely be back. I usually don’t waste my time deep diving these types of channels but you’re super concise. It’s refreshing but sad to learn that I’ve been smearing iron, fallout and film over my Pearl white coat. My carbon fiber has lost 50% of its coat assuredly. Perhaps your last step will brush up on paint/coat surface repair. I’m loading up on equipment so hit me with all you got. I’m going all in now

😵💫 Wow Pan, I am a little stunned but I get it. Very good information and delivery. There are so many channels that claim they are the best. Thank you again Pan for removing the smoke of confusion and explaining the recommended sequence and process for the iron and tar removal! Is it a good idea to wash the painted surfaces with soap again after rinsing off the iron and tar remover before paint correction or is the rinse enough?

Great video Pan thanks for explaining the difference between wheel cleaning iron full out removers compared to body work iron full out removers. This has been a question I’ve wanted answered for a long time.
Unfortunately I don’t have the answer to that as that would mean knowing the industry secrets for the formula and I don’t think many brands would share that hehe. But who knows, perhaps a chemist will answer one day.
It’s like you have a PhD in car detailing. I’m enjoying this 101 playlist! Building my knowledge and saving up to do these 5 steps in like 8 months since I just purchased a new car for the first time in my life, the bank to hit there lol.

The best smelling iron remover i've ever purchased was Adams. Theirs smells incredible.
It’s also not as strong as most of the top tier iron removers however in my tests. It most likely has a smaller concentration of the active ingredients.

Just scoured Pan The Organiser for the one area I am not fully sure on at the moment and that is which decontamination products...The final gap for me is decontamination products and quality prep residue removal....... and I KNEW.. just I KNEW that there would be no gaps in the World of Pan.. and HERE it is!!! : )) I actually have to buy a three-tier trlly now in my garage area for my products to wheel out ! Always learning here ... what a joy! learning and then trying out the new products when they arrive! Converted by Pan in less than a year ..... : )) Just love the detail in these programmes..... I can now wash my car to mellow monks chanting rather than some weekend warrior-heavy psychedelic rock .....as I am relaxed and in the know in what I am doing........... next on my list ...... the Rag Company Gautlet drying towel! Few more years of practice with the towel and style and method and the right tools and chemicals for the job in hand at the stage the vehicle is in...... I am just going to get better !
All thanks to Pan! Some may say information overload but the thing with Pan is it all LINKS into the holistic whole .. and every programme there are some gem tips!
By far my favourite detailing channel. Pan will hit a million subscribers soon enough! He's the best place in town! : ))
" Quality is an event "! - Aristotle. Everyone loves a well-cared-for and polished car and appreciated your efforts out on the way here.....young and old alike ... I got into a conversation with one of the few " Spitfire pilot in WW2 " when I was in my late twenties in his buggy.. He was very old when I was cleaning my first BMW and first black car .. He stopped or a chat...... Actually got into some great conversations with the decent folk doing my cars over the years ....outside ..... and some friendly smiles ... used to put in so much effort with elbow grease and now.... one can do it so much better and so much smarter........... loving the journey on here........ : )) Arete' - Ancient Greek word of the day.. the pursuit of excellence for its own sake and Eudaimonia a kind of ongoing flourishing sense of joy from action .... Pan brings out both.... to the people........ this makes him the King of Detailers and man of the people at the same time! : )) it is about the JOY of every man or woman or any being to get the joy from detailing their cars and we all progress in getting better............ nowhere does this come out better than with Pan the Organiser........ : )) Much appreciated : )) Added a new dimension of a hobby to my life. I am thank full. : ))
Do you happen to have a video about WHEEL ACID, and types of rims and what goes well with each? Thank you always, I feel like I’m in school every time I watch your videos. Amazing explanation and always genuine energy! 🙏
Perfect Pan. Exactly where I am in need of the information. I have purchased The Chemical Guys Complete Clay Bar Kit, and used it for 85% of my white car. (roof and hood left to do). Wish I had been able to find an Iron remover :( Oh well that is on the order list now.
Fantastic 101! I have to up my decon during winter due to snowplow blade scraper fallout.
Fantastic advice! I didn’t realize that all this contamination can mask the hydrophobic properties of my ceramic coated vehicles. Before this video, I was really bummed out because I spent hours prepping and applying the ceramic coatings, only to see the hydrophobic properties fade away over time. I’m so glad that I get to try these decontamination steps again so I can have the chance to see really good water beading and sheeting again! I’ll be doing these steps soon, and can’t wait to see the results!
That also depends if you applied the coating correctly and did all the proper prep and maintenance afterwards.
Yes, I followed all of your steps for prep and maintenance. Just haven’t done chemical decontamination for a few months since application.
Hey Pan, your channel is like Detailing University, and you are the professor
😁👍🏻
I like to agitate tar remover and iron remover with a soft microfiber towel before I rinse it off. Such an approach delivers far better results than just spraying the product on the paint and then rinsing off.
Yes that's good especially if you have heavy contamination. On light to moderate levels, spraying and rinsing usually does the trick, especially given the fact you're moving to the clay stage afterwards.
@@PanTheOrganizer Thanks for the motivation and your detailed tutorials! Stay safe.
Keep your paint tight. Looking forward to spring to test out the turtle wax decon

These 101 videos are incredibly helpful to a complete beginner like me. You’re an excellent teacher Pan. Thanks for all you do!
Thanks for the feedback Joe! I appreciate as always!
Love it. Down into THE FINE DETAILS!

I mix P&S Brakebuster and Iron Buster in a pump sprayer to clean wheels.... the best of both products!
I never tried that combo. So the chemistry is compatible enough for both to work in the same sprayer? Do you still get color changing from the reaction with iron particles?
Thanks Pan -- best smelling iron remover i have used is AM Iron 👍
Thanks Iain!
Gotta say, the Mothers Bug and Tar remover is the bomb especially if your prepping to coat your car, even PPF which holds onto some of that grime just rinses off with ease.
Another great video Pan TYVM, very clear and simple rules that make our lives so much easier when we treat our beasts to the TLC they deserve. Looking forward to the next instalment mate.
I was interesting to hear that all Iron Removers can also be used to get the iron build up off the wheels as well as all over the car so TY. Keep Safe Keep Strong My Dear Friend
Thanks!
Great video and series Pan. Always pick up something new and just forgot. Keep them coming. Till the next one.👍🏻
Thanks Wayne!
Good show Pan!! Always interesting to follow you and perfecting our own process. I was always doing iron decon first and using tar decon in second locally on the paint where needed only. Good idea to start with a tar remover and follow with the iron remover process. Can't wait to see you're suggestions for the mechanical decon. Keep up the good work. You are very interesting to follow. Well done! Frank
Thanks Frank! Next video in the series coming soon so stay tuned!
Thanks for the deep dive on these two kinds of products!
Glad it was helpful!
Was very interested in this video as I have a white car. It was well done, and well explained. Thanks for taking the time, I'm looking forward to the claying video! Appreciate it Pan!! Cheers!
Thanks Zed!
Great theoretical refresher episode.!!
Nice & simple presentation as always you do.
Thanks a lot dear Pan.
Thanks Ajith!
Great Vid TY for presenting in a super simplified way, looking forward to next
Glad you liked it! More to come!
thanks pan, well informed and very well explained how they work, I am a pro detailer and still refur to your Chanel, my go to iron remover is dragons blood, keep up the good work 👍👍👍
Thanks Steve!
Opt ferrex I think smells the worst and is a bit pricey but works very well 👍 Thankyou for taking the time to spread the wealth of knowledge to fellow detailers.
Thanks!
Love this idea. A step by step booklet for you to get. I still recall watching Paul Dalton on an episode of 5th gear in 2012 where he goes through a 10 step process to detail a Maserati MC12
Thank you for the feedback! And yes I remember that video! Paul was one of the inspirations on RUclips years before I even started my channel. Too bad that he doesn't really produce content anymore. He's been out of the RUclips scene for years now. He had the potential to become as big or bigger than me, or Larry from AMMO !!
@@PanTheOrganizer I had a 2012 Mercedes 250 C class coupe in black. And when I had that car I went on RUclips searching for a video on how to correctly wax & wash the car. But that video was like an open door for me to find all of you guys from Pan to Ammo to Forensic to Topaz.
You're the best man. Thanks for sharing your superb 👍 knowledge.
My pleasure! Thanks Rudy! How did you discover my channel by the way?

Thanks Pan, I really needed this video simple but a fountain of knowledge, great stuff👌
Glad you enjoyed it!
I LOVE this idea! Looking forward to this series!
More to come so stay tuned!
Very well... Explained 🙏👍from India.
Thanks Mahesh! How did you discover my channel?
Love this Pan. You always have the know how and explain it so well. I am trying to keep up with this during the winter months as I can not detail here in Ottawa over the winter months.
You are so welcome!
Pan it's like you read my mind, thank you!
My pleasure!
Thanks!!
Very helpful I learn more
I'am detailer myself...
Great to hear! How did you discover my channel by the way?

I love the ph neutral product. Used ironx
Great video, as always. Thanks Pan!
Thank you!
this is very informative. So we can use the iron remover as maintenance cleaner for ceramic coated cars
Yes once every 3 to 4 months it’s good to use an iton remover on a ceramic coated car to remove brake dust contamination. Or more often depending on your level of iron contamination.
Pan thanks for the video!!!
Thanks Konstantino!
I’m sorry I must have missed it… when you apply the iron remover to the car… the car needs to be wet correct..,, mr. Pan…. I appreciate your help and videos because they are top notch
You can apply it on wet or dry paint. Applying on wet paint is quicker as you don’t need to dry the paint before applying.
@@PanTheOrganizer thank you sir
Great video Pan ,brilliantly and clearly explained 🖒
Thanks Bill!
I’ve always wanted to know the difference between tar and iron removers
👍🏻
Another in depth and informative video on a couple of items I knew nothing about.
Thanks Pan for updating me on Tar removal and Iron X. There is another couple more bottles going to be on my garage detailing shelf! Awesome!! Going to need to sell my kidney to buy all these new products!!!
😂👍🏻
Sweet video and I really enjoyed the chemistry aspect. I should have paid more attention in college to chemistry. I use Ethos wheel cleaner once a month as I am struggling to find the sweet spot on using soap versus wheel cleaner on coated wheels. Thank you for the video.
Glad it was helpful!
Great stuff! Key point you emphasized - don't use in the sun and don't let the product dry - bad results for sure. I went back through a few times, but I couldn't catch the oxidation enhancer/accelerant. I wanted to map out the reaction (too much organic chemistry as a student). Thioglycol-something was what I caught.
Thanks Brian!
Thanks for another informative video. Ive never done an iron decon on any car so im very anxious to see how it turns out. Never done it on our personal vehicle
You can do it!
Another question: got adams iron remover, after that, then clay bar, and polish, do I need to do the ipa prep or can I put a wax on w/o the prep
You’re the man Pan 👍🏽👍🏽
Thanks Oscar!
Great video! I agree with the concept of decontaminating the car paint, but I disagree with the order in which you recommend we perform this task. I recommend removing the iron fallout first followed by the tar removal. I reversed this order once, but I found this process to be less effective, causing me to use more products and consequently more time consuming, so I reverted back to removing iron fallout first followed by the tar removal. Also, the only time a sponge becomes useful when detailing a car is when your removing tar from the car paint…shows how much regard I have for sponges.
To each their own. I'm ok with what ever works for you. But you'll find that on most big detailing channels, with detailers having decades of experience, it's tar removers first and then iron removers. You want to remove those chunks of tar first, as they could be hiding iron particles underneath.
And tar removers shouldn't be systematically used. Only if you see tar deposits, or sometimes used to cut down traffic film on coated cars if you see hydrophobics being masked. APC pre-treatment works well too, and so do some alkaline pre-wash snow foams (CarPro Lift, Bilt Hamber Auto-Foam, etc).
And iron removers those are more ok to use regularly, like every 3-4 months or as needed based on brake dust contamination.
In the end, as long as you understand the concepts and are performing paint decontamination when needed, you are ahead of 99% of people. :).
Love it million times THANKS 🙏
Outstanding! Very glad to have found your channel. Thank you…
Thanks !! How did you discover my channel by the way?
